Cricket at Southeast Asia Games 2017

Malaysia should win this, easily. The only real team that might give competition would be Singapore.

The rest are pretty, no offense intended, awful to say the least.

How is the Standard and popularity of Cricket in Malaysia ? The Malaysian team seems to be full of Indians, but no Malays or Chinese.

I'm surprised the teams have indigenous players instead of being the usual South Asians.

Malays and Chinese hardly play cricket, they're more into Badminton and Football. Although Malaysia, locally constitutes of three races (Malays, Chinese and Indians [Tamil/South Indians]), only the Indians are somewhat, and I use the term loosely here, interested in the sport.

The infrastructure is decentish, I mean there are a few locations (grounds) that are at best club quality but to become a a side like Afg or even Ireland for that matter, they are a long long way from it. Plus the most difficult thing is to buy cricket equipment here. When I used to live in KL there were only like 2 shops in the entire city that had proper cricket gear and much of it was on the expensive side. The weather doesn't help either as it gets wet quite a bit in the country (in general).

The quality of cricket however is very good. This is because a lot of Pakistan ex first class cricketers (people we have not even heard of) and I have literally met them, come here and are either doing their own business or working as an expat and as a side gig they coach clubs and interact with local cricketers who might aspire to pursue the sport.

There are a few Pakistani clubs as well (performance wise they're the best) that are operating here but since most of the players in these clubs are expats it is impossible for them to break into the national team due to preference of locals in national teams (Its not just with cricket, this is Malaysia policy with regards to every walk of life). They only make exceptions for a select few (a) You're massively good at what you do (b) They do not have any locals as a replacement.

Thanks for the details. Malaysia just smashed Myanmar by ten Wickets today.

ahmedwaqas92, the Malaysian team seems to be dominated by Malays instead of Indians.

That's because as I said earlier, in every walk of life preference is given in this order

1) Malays
2) Chinese
3) Indians

This is not some taboo subject, their country policy officially selects and offers opportunities according to race. I personally know brilliant Indian players who can make this Malay team 10x stronger not being given the opportunity because at the end of the day preference, as I've pointed out, is given in the above order.

Okay, so they are the Bumipetra/Malay quota players.
And I thought they are the best players in the Country : faceplam:
