Cricketers who underachieved

He underachieved, was booted out by Cook & his gang for that Ashes loss in 2015. Played crucial roles in England winning Ashes in 2005 & 2010-11 in Australia, also played a part in beating India in India in 2012-13 series. Could have easily been part of ODI side until 2019 World Cup.
We all know why he was booted out. It had nothing to do with cricket.

Looking at this thread, it seems like alot of people missed the point.

If you got down to it, you could probably make the case for any player to be an underachiever.

Flintoff, KP, VVS, AB, Warner etc. are still players who had substantial careers and if you asked fans about them today, they would still remember them.

I think people should list the names of players they thought possessed alot of talent, but for some reason, their careers did not pan out the way they should have.

The names that come to my mind here are guys like:

Jesse Ryder, Vinod Kambli, Mohammed Asif, Mark Ramprakash, Shaun Tait, Umar Akmal, Asim Kamal...

Someone who scored 7K+ test runs is not really an underachiever no matter how you choose to look at it.

One for me that under achieved and it wasn’t his fault at all.

Kyle Abbott
What a bowler he was.

It was between him or Steyn instead of him playing alongside Steyn. So he had to be dropped. Poor guy went kolpak route

That's a good shout. Could have been South Africa's version of Hazlewood. He is still doing well in county cricket. I actually thought Rilee Rossouw was highly talented too and was really starting to come into his own as a batsman when he took the Kolpak deal, along with Abbott.

Though I wouldn't say they were entirely blameless. When you believe you are that good, not even the quota system can deter you. There are quite a few white South African players who have proven this. It's all about what you value in life. And I guess in their case financial stability was more important than a shot at greatness. Can't hold it against them but they shouldn't paint themselves as victims.

Simon Jones

Great talent. His spell of reverse-swing at Old Trafford is still the stuff of legends. Sadly he was too injury-prone..

Moeen Ali ... He had ability; however, did not value his wicket

Often got out playing stupid shots (Afridi-esque)
