Crowds in South Africa not as sporting as they used to be?

Maybe its the weather or maybe its the shock of seeing Pakistan actually bat - but crowd in Cape Town not too appreciative of shots by Pakistan - I do seem to recall more energy in the past but maybe its shock

Not sure what the experience has been on other tours?

Or maybe not much happening so little short on energy - thoughts?

Don’t know what you expect them to be doing? Jumping up and down. They have been applauding shots besides we need to focus on our batting and not worry whether the opposition supporters are cheering us on or not!

yeah maybe we should lodge a complain with the local police! their unsporting boorish behavior has obviously made our batsmen forget how to bat.

I am comparing them to those in England and Australia.

And not sure where I said that we are batting better? Some serious comprehension issues for some.

Honestly, it’s very similar to when a Pakistani batsman hits a boundary in India against India.

In Odis and T20s, South African fans do appreciate shots played by the opposition in the past.

I wonder how much crowd is there in this test.

Also, in other sports like ice Hockey, i have seen that fans dont really cheer for the away teams goal. Its only in cricket that i have seen this by England fans who cheer for opposition aswelll

Why should fans of the opposing team be applauding your boundaries or wickets in the first place? Do people cheer when someone scores a goal against their team?

Think you have forgotten what cricket is all about

Yes, I agree. South Africa has changed now in last couple of years.

A country we remembered for playing completely fair cricket, producing matches of highest quality and keeping the game at the most respectable level, no whining at all. Giving their best, accepting win as much as defeat, appreciating top quality performances and not going horses for courses for any kind of stuff.

It is not the same anymore, they whine for pitches, they whine for Pakistan's susceptibility with the bat and the crowds ain't the same as well.

The era of gentleman's game is long gone. The sport has changed with time and there's nothing wrong with it. With more professionalism, cricket has imbibed features of other sports where you play to win at any cost and crowds have evolved too as such.

True. I was surprised at a lack of applause for Pakistani shots. But when I saw this thread, my doubts were confirmed.

Think we're expecting too much from this bunch. Look at the pitches they provided. Do they want to kill our batsmen?

Sorry to say but this is a very Indian thing. We have seen this in matches in India a lot, less elsewhere

Cricket is the only place where this whole praise the opposition nonsense happens, you don't see any home fan ever cheering or praising away team in football or in most sports for that matter, sport is supposed to be tribal in nature.

They’re probably angry at their team’s embarrassing performance in Sri Lanka and taking it out here.

India, Bangladesh, UAE, Sri Lanka and now South Africa.
Not just Indian thing anymore.

Cricket is a competitive sport first and foremost. Cheering for your cousin when he hits a six against you in the park is fine, but it doesn't make sense at the international level.

First it was commentary, then the pitches and now the crowd? No one is immune to criticism or complaints. Maybe South Africa shouldn't play fast bowlers in their owncconditions either. Seriously the levels of insecurity are being taken too far.

I somehow feel that crowds don’t recognize any of the Pakistan batsmen as big names as they seem to be new in the circuit. Had it been old blokes like Inzi, Anwar or Yousuf crowd would have acknowledged.

i always thought SA & NZ were the two fairest teams in the world - with their supporters imbibing their team culture too. However my opinion about SA crowd changed when they started that disgusting sledging against Warner’s wife in the last series- however big a tool Warner was, they should not have made her a scapegoat to get back at Warner. That is not cricket!

It is as if South African ex players were polite in their behavior.
I still remember how gentle clive rice, hudson, cronje (not the fixing issue, that is a different thing), kirsten were when BCCI helped them back into the international arena.
I also remember the 1997 tour when donald, pollock etc were dishing out expletives against each boundary that was scored against them - especially dravid, ganguly even azhar had to take that.

But the crowds in 1997 were sporting due to the great Nelson Mandela being in person and the father figure of the country at that time.

I think politics, international affairs, other sports' influence crowd behavior a lot - cricket being played in a few countries gets the affect much faster than football I think, in that aspect.

The likes of duck master Imam and Azhar the short ball king aren't meriting any standing ovations from the crowds.

Some of them cheered for Kohli last time. they cheer only for recognised faces I guess

You are clearly missing the point of this thread.Where does the opposition team`s overall performance come into this ?
The poster is simply inquiring about a contrast he felt in the attitudes of the SA crowds of old vs now so please lets just restrict the discussion to that aspect.

My God. What a sensitive and self conscious bunch you guys are. A score of 250 and you start expecting standing ovations and stunned admiration from the crowd. The minnow mentality has finally started kicking in.

Ya well,as you so wisely observed this is cricket, not football.
Each sport has its own traditions and spirit which gives it its unique beauty. So as far as cricket is concerned this "nonsense" is a very cricketing thing ,gives it bit of an air of chivalry and decency...basically you get the idea.

Chivalry, you expect chivalry from fans when players cheat, fix matches, routinely behave in absolutely crass and uncouth manner and abuse fellow players, basically you are living in the past, welcome to 2019 you are the last one to arrive.

I have never understood the obsession of cricket fans with sporting crowds. Why do you want the opposition fans to appreciate you, and why should they?

I found cricket crowds always boring hopefully in future they can turn into crowds like other sports and give hell to opposition players.

As time progresses, culture changes.

It isn't an English culture dominated entity anymore. So it isn't surprise that the inner instincts, that were held back in the name of sporting nature, are wearing out. But it is better to show raw emotions than faking one.

Ofc that is also taken against the spirit of the game and the beauty of cricket lies in this gentlemanly behavior. In some cases its best to uphold traditions.

You are bowling on same.pitches as well but their batsmen's are scoring..so don't know what to say..

Those swimming pools on the sidelines always look lit.

Last tour some guy did a prank on his girlfriend as well and they showed it on camera.

South Africans and Aussies always have a good time at cricket games.
