"As a player, it's always difficult to make the transition. Throughout the years of playing and leading this franchise, we have demonstrated that PZ isn't just about cricket. It's a family. From the 2nd season, I've been the captain. We had our successes, we played 3 finals and won in 2017.

"The last two years I've played while not being fully fit. This year, I feel the best and I am all fit and ready to go but if there's one thing that has made PZ what it is today, is my message as the VC then, and then captain, I asked players to do what's best for the team. As a leader, I have demonstrated that.

"This season, my preparation and form hasn't really been where I want it to be, to be able to perform for my team in the best way possible. I communicated with Mohammad Akram. Javed doesn't really get involved in the cricketing aspect. We have a good relationship, I respect him and love him as a person.

"2 days ago, someone asked me who is my best coach on Instagram. I said Ottis Gibson, and then Mohammad Akram. So I have a lot of respect for him and I value his opinion. So we came to this decision, doing what's best for the team.

"What greater example, if I'm asking my players to do what's best for team - I think the best sermon is one that's lived, not the one that is preached.

"I still have the option to select myself (laughing) but I think for this tournament, the way my game is, looking at the young players, I think it's time for me to lead the team in a different role.

"I got great love for this franchise, the players respect me and it's a great opportunity for me to lead from the outside with my skills. I know I'll have the full support of the coaching staff and players and coach Akram.

"It may be my last game on the field for Zalmi but I have cherished all the moments. Seeing the tournament here in Pakistan is a blessing.

"I've never really coached, but over the years, playing in so many different franchises, especially in the T20 format, it's about more man management than anything else. You get players for 6 weeks and there isn't much you can do in terms of the technical aspects.

"In terms of having a plan together, discussing the brand of cricket and having the personnel to execute it - I've been doing that on the field. It's just transferring that into the coaching role.

"Is it an easy decision? I still have a passion to play. I'll also be captaining the St. Lucia franchise. I haven't retired, I'm still playing. It gives me 5 months to get myself ready. Throughout my career, my strongest asset has been my mind. We all have families, and sometimes you disagree within your own family.

"I'm not saying that me and coach didn't go back and forth. I'm saying I'm making the best decision for the team, which is something I've always preached. No matter who you are, the team comes first. My mannerisms and the way I play have shown I am a team player, no matter how tough the decision is. Nothing but love and respect for the franchise, players and coaching staff.

"I've always said that cricket which is my passion brought me here. What I've experienced as an Islander - we got so many of them in the Caribbean. When people visit our island, as beautiful as it is, they always say the people make the island. To me, that is the sweetest thing I have experienced. The love of the people have made Pakistan what it is. Because of the way they've embraced us when we took the step in 2017, this is why we see the entire tournament here playing in front of full crowds. Every sportsman loves playing cricket in front of a full house."

WOW. What happens to Mohammad Akram? Hard to believe they sacked him in a live press con...

Nevermind, just saw Saj's tweet - I guess he's promoted to Director Cricket Operations ala Aqib Javed -- alls well that ends well

More like promotion than sacking. Good that Sammy wont be able to play. Pollard and Brathwaite, both are way more important.

I assume Sammy wants to play atleast 1 game in Peshawar next year, wouldve been weird if that didnt happen after all this.

Good job done. One thing I would have liked to see is a young captain, hopefully in future seasons.

Need to get rid of useless Mohammad Akram. Waste of money!!!

I am surprised and happy to see how well and how professionally this matter got handled by PZ.

I am not a big PZ fan, but credit must be given where it deserves.

Press Release / Darren Sammy appointed Peshawar Zalmi head coach for next two years / Wahab Riaz captain for season five

Muhammad Akram will play his role as director Cricket and bowling coach of Peshawar Zalmi.

Daren Sammy's services to Peshawar Zalmi and Pakistan Cricket will be remembered, the decision was made in the interest of the team and with the advice and consent of the Sammy, Mohammad Akram Director Cricket Peshawar Zalmi.

I still want to play for Zalmi, but the team comes above all. For Peshawar Zalmi I will deliver my passion by playing the role of the head coach, Daren Sammy.

Darren Sammy once again proved himself as the leader that he is, Javed Afridi.

Peshawar Zalmi has appointed Wahab Riaz as the team captain for the season five, replacing Daren Sammy. At a press conference with Daren Sammy at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Peshawar Zalmi Director Cricket Mohammad Akram said that in consultation with Daren Sammy and the team management, it was decided that Wahab Riaz appointed captain of Peshawar Zalmi in HBL PSL Season Five. While Daren Sammy will be the head coach of Peshawar Zalmi for the next two years from today. Mohammad Akram made it clear that Darren Sammy is a contract player/mentor for Peshawar Zalmi, According to the rules, if Sammy and the team management decided, Sammy will be available as a player too in the current PSL season. Mohammad Akram said the person behind making West Indies a two-time world champion, Darren Sammy’s services to Peshawar Zalmi and Pakistan cricket will be remembered.

Darren Sammy said that as captain he always supported the view that no one else was above the team. What he wanted to do for Peshawar Zalmi as a player, couldn’t happen because of his form and fitness. After that, it was jointly decided that Wahab Riaz would be the captain of Peshawar Zalmi in his place. Darren Sammy said he would work to make Zalmi the best team as head coach, for which he has the full support of Chairman Peshawar Zalmi Javed Afridi, Director Cricket Mohammad Akram, and the entire team.

Javed Afridi, Chairman of Peshawar Zalmi said that Zalmi Peshawar is not just a team but a family. Mohammed Akram and Darren Sammy together with the players made Zalmi one body and a team. The current decision is a reflection of the fact that Darren Sammy, Mohammad Akram and every member of Team Zalmi think more for the team than the personal interest.

It should be noted that Mohammad Akram as Peshawar Zalmi is the Director of Cricket and Bowling Coach while Darren Sammy will be the head coach / player.

Everyone gets called useless on Pakpassion at some point, even the guy that has coached his team to a championship win and multiple playoff appearances.

Riaz is a good captain , should have lead Pakistan ODI team 2-3 years ago instead of Azhar or Sarfaraz , not now . Could be an option to lead Pakistan team in T20 WC .

Well put.

Mohammad Akram was a pretty good bowling coach for Pak until his last few months and has done great job with PZ and and has handled both Hasan and Wahab pretty well. Also his handling of Haider Ali in this season was remarkable.

Babar has just been appointed captain, you want 35 years old Wahab to replace him out of the blue?

Basic criteria for captain atleast in modern day cricket which many fans forget is to have a captain who is makes team on merit. Wahab struggled to be a regular part of Pak team on many occasions that is why he was never a captaincy candidate, he does have few good qualities but in cricket you cant ignore cricketing stature in the team when appointing a captain as if a person cant make team on merit its gonna create problems for team and management sooner or later.

Does Darren Sammy have any qualifications? He doesn't seem like a coach type for me. Would be better in a mentor role.

This stinks of Javed Afridi of giving his friend a job.

Pretty much. Quetta also have Razzaq on their team, who noone knows what he actually does.

Like Pop handing Duncan the reigns except that Sammy has been useless for two years time.

My issue with Sammy being coach isn't his lack of experience. As far as a I know he doesn't have qualifications for Loughborough or any others.

This is clearly Javed Afridi helping Sammy out. Giving him a free pass at a job due to his Sammy loyalty to PZ.

Keeping him sweet.

No longer good enough to play, so they give him a role and Mohammad Akram is the fall guy who steps aside to take on a different role.

No batsmen are in form this PSL so not sure sammy is wise to put his boots up
but him and afridi have come to a agreement where his still the chiefs number one
Suprised to see Amla not get a bigger push which tells you this might be his last season

Amla is part of the management in the role of batting consultant/mentor so I am not sure this effects him and thus his renewal or not in future seasons in this role is not related to the recent developments in my opinion.

They've both been heavily involved in press work this week so Amla is much more than just a batting coach

Clearly Zalmi's way to get rid of Sammy in a way none will be able to critisize them and Sammy won't feel betrayed.

Things could change for Sammy once he gets the Pakistani nationality. He then wouldn't be a burden and won't stand in the way of Braithwaite or Pollard.

Other than Babar, no one else deserved a permanent place in Pak team in any format . Pakistan need Babar the batsman more than Babar the captain. If Captaincy effected his batting , that would be not a good thing.

Babar can be made captain after T20 WC but making him captain now, showed Misbah's lack of vision.

Daren Sammy will return as captain of the St. Lucia Zouks for the 2020 season.

Sammy has just finished a coaching stint in Pakistan and he will be back in his playing shirt this season. Hewill be captaining his home franchise once again! He has been part of the St. Lucia Zouks franchise since the inception of CPL in 2013.

Coach Andy Flower weighed in on Sammy's appointment saying: “I can’t wait to work closely with Daren and for the island of St. Lucia. I worked with Daren five years ago when he captained the Peshawar team in the Pakistan Super League and we thoroughly enjoyed our time together. I know how passionate he is about his island and it's cricket and we will do everything within our power to bring fun, entertainment, and success to St. Lucia.”

Sammy is excited to be retained by the Zouks and to be captaining this year. He said: “The franchise is dear to my heart and this year I am honored to lead the franchise one more time. Playing at home with passionate fans and the calibre of players I anticipate will be retained, I expect to bring silverware to St. Lucia. St. Lucia Zouks is well on its way in securing its team of players and looks forward to a successful year of cricket in St. Lucia.”

The CPL is scheduled to take place between 19 August and 26 September but the tournament organisers are currently watching the current situation with COVID-19 closely and are liaising with medical advisors and governments.

Still good enough for the St zouks team
Like Mahendra Singh dhoni he could still walk into most t20 teams

Darren Sammy speaking to media outlet

“I am not sure [when West Indies will visit Pakistan next], I have not checked the calendar. But I think we were about to a year before last year. I think now the teams are coming. I remember us taking a small step in the PSL two and getting to the finals in Lahore. I think that was a small step in the right direction"

“Now Hashim Amla and I were having a conversation and I think Javed asks what the difference is between now and five years ago. I think the major difference coming to Pakistan now, four years ago players would be calling me and go ‘Darren, I am going over there [Pakistan], do you think we should go?’ When West Indies was coming the captain had to call me and go, ‘Man should I go on this tour?’. Now players asking where they can play golf and questions like can we go to dinner in these or these places. The quote-unquote threat of security, that is slowly diminishing from people’s minds and I think that is what we want"

“When I made my debut for the West Indies in the Champions Trophy, I remember Pakistan playing West Indies at the Rose Bowl in Hampshire and they were opening with Mohammad Sami, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar. I saw Shoaib Akhtar bowling a bouncer to Brian Lara and hit him in the head. Brian Lara fell back probably almost unconscious. I was sitting and I was 19 years old next to Dwayne Bravo. I literally questioned whether I wanted to play cricket again. Shoaib Akhtar did that to me"

“I met him four days ago in Islamabad and I gave him that story. He said ‘Brian clipped him for four on the first ball’ and I guess that was his response. It was a joy to watch the Rawalpindi Express coming down with his hair flying. Shoaib Akhtar with his pace. In the current day, even though I am not playing I would pad up easily against any bowler and try to hit them out of the park"

People may think he has forced PZ into making him their head coach, but this man has played a big big role in bringing cricket back to Pakistan. He genuinely loves Pak cricket as well.

Darren Sammy is a legend in PSL this shows where PSL stands, it's a mediocre league with mediocre players apart from a few exceptions.

Darren Sammy said in his message that he is happy once again to be associated with Peshawar Zalmi,: Peshawar Zalmi is my family and excited for PSL eight, Darren Sammy said that as captain for Peshawar Zalmi, Winning the trophy of SL2 is one of the happy memories, there is full hope that the team will perform well in Pakistan Super League season eight as well. Darren Sammy, a two-time World T20 winner for West Indies, is considered the greatest captain in the T20 format.

Daren Sammy appointed head coach of Peshawar Zalmi for Pakistan Super League season eight

"Welcome back Daren Sammy to the Peshawar Zalmi family" Javed Afridi, Chairman Peshawar Zalmi.

Very Happy & excited again to be associated with Peshawar Zalmi, Peshawar Zalmi is my family and excited for PSL eight, Daren Sammy

Darren Sammy was unavailable last season due to his commitment. Peshawar Zalmi chairman Javed Afridi wrote in a Twitter message that he welcomes Darren Sammy once again to the Peshawar Zalmi family. Javed Afridi said that as a former captain and head coach, Darren Sammy has always been the most important part of Peshawar Zalmi. Along with this, Daren Sammy's role in the restoration of international cricket in Pakistan is also unforgettable, especially in the final of PSL 2, the enthusiasm with which Darren Sammy came to Pakistan and played the final will always be memorable.

Guess this will be the end of his association with PZ?

Yeah, you are right Sammy. Winning the trophy is the only thing that matters in the end and Peshawar failed yet again to win one.

--------------------------------------

Daren Sammy speaking during a presser after losing the Eliminator-2 against Islamabad United in PSL 9:

“To be honest, right now, being consistent doesn’t mean anything to me without a trophy. I think that’s what we aim for every year. Having participated in nine playoffs and won just one trophy is not enough. Islamabad, Multan, and Lahore each won two trophies, surpassing us. We have been in the finals four times. This year again, we had two opportunities, but we could not advance.”
