David Lloyd: ‘Alarm bells should be ringing’ over the IPL’s impact on international cricket

Alarm bells for IPl and its EcB who continuously come up with absurd formats like the Hundred now

He can begin by giving back the money he has taken for commentating in IPL seasons over the past few years.

Totally agree with Bumble

If IPL keeps dictating international duties it will be the end of International cricket with tamasha cricket taking over.

Sad times

Cricket as a sport is at a crossroads.

I think that post-2030 that the 50 over format could be wound down and it will be Tests & T20s going forward.

Playing for your national team should be the priority. The boards invest a lot of money on young cricketers to develop them into international level players. The players owe a lot to the cricket boards so should always choose national sides if required to do so.

Speaking of players unavailable due to IPL, is Aus. white ball captain available for the Aus-Pak series?

He has signed up with KKR in IPL for $200,000/yr.

Not really sure of the relevance of this given the hundred has practically no impact on international cricket.

Alarm bells have been ringing for a long time. Nobody is interested in hearing them.

At the end of the day, no matter how much we discuss the impact of IPL on world cricket, fact is its the players who want to play IPL and maximize their earnings. And sadly there is nothing you can do about it because international cricket simply is not as lucrative. The Indians have tried to counter players having to choose IPL over international duty by essentially assigning a separate window to the IPL in the FTP, and that's really the best anyone can hope for.

Players from England and Australia are rich enough to prioritize test cricket over T20 cricket because they literally have the most lucrative central contracts in world cricket, along with the Indians. But don't expect South Africans, West Indians, New Zealanders etc. to do the same.

My guess is that he will join KKR after the series which will be over by the end of the month.

The IPL starts next weekend. The T20 match is on Apr 5th. So if Finch will miss at least 10 days which could be minimum of 3 KKR games.

Three out of what, 18 games? Don't think that's anything worth sweating over when you have a squad loaded with overseas talent.

there will always be a market for, and time for the top 7 or 8 nations to play 3 or 4 test series a year. get rid of the other bilateral internationals and let the players make money in the random leagues.

im pretty sure the majority of cricketers like playing tests.

Looking ahead long term, I see IPL occupying 1/4th of a calendar year. So it is up to the ICC on how well they utilize the rest of the available time (9 months).

If they do a good job of it, then tests/international cricket will survive and perhaps even thrive. But considering ICC's track record, that is a big ask.

The country whose cricket has been damaged the most is actually India.

They have their best ever bowling attack, but in the last four years have lost Test series to:

England 1-4
South Africa 1-2
South Africa 1-2
New Zealand 0-2
New Zealand 0-1 on neutral territory.

Viv Richards never lost a Test series as skipper.
Imran Khan lost 1 Test series in his final 6 years as skipper.

India just lose and lose and lose and lose, and don't seem to care because the BCCI's IPL revenue is huge.

It's bizarre. England lost to Iceland at Euro 2016 and it turned everything upside down, with international football finally prioritised so they came 4th two years later at the World Cup and 2nd three years after that at Euro 2020 in 2021.

But in India, endless defeats don't seem to matter if the revenue is good.

Their players were also quite clearly burnt out from playing the IPL at last year's T20 WC.

And the way I see it they might continue being burnt out. Especially guys like Rohit who are playing every format + months long IPL at the age of 34.

I see some selective stats in this thread to support their argument on how IPL is damaging India's test cricket. But, we have also seen how Indian test team has performed well and stayed at the top or near the top of the rankings for a few years now. I believe the IPL has helped these players to be confident and develop a winning attitude.

Its a decision of the NZ and SA players and their boards.

Till the early 90s world cricket would stop as the county season began in England. Cricketers flocked there as the pay was good in an era when cricket didn't have much money. No one complained then.

English players are free to miss the IPL. Bumble may recommend that to the ECB.

Whats funny is thst pakistanis are complaining, when they have no stake in the game. Next is a BD guy whose country has may be 1 or 2 representatives.

The only feasible solution of this is to shelve T20I cricket.

Test cricket has its elusive set of fans and they have made sure that T20s don't hurt Tests but the format that has been hurt the most is ODI cricket. There have been very few ODI matches that has happened after 2019 WC. The ODI format has been diminished by the influence of T20Is.

Bumble is spot on.

So, will Bumble recommend to the ECB that no Eng player be allowed to play IPL? Will he be explaining to the players about the greatness of Test/International cricket and the "evilness" of IPL? How the players should prioritize tests and ignore IPL no matter what they get paid?

After all the alarm bells are ringing and needs to be stopped. He should play some part in stopping it.

By the way, will he be returning the $$$ he earned from the IPL since it is "evil"? As a matter of principle.
