Death of malls in America

Malls are depressing, glad they are being closed, street markets are way better and more entertaining.

Here in Canada too, big box stores are closing down one by one (Kmart, Zellers, Sears, Toy r us).

A few reasons for it, one being stores like Walmart ate up their business by offering better prices and marginally better service. There were also some poor business decisions, branding/marketing mistakes. Then came the final nail in the coffin with online shopping like Amazon.

Always enjoted visiting the shopping malls in Florida when I have gone to USA.

Clean, spacious and full of great bargains.

more than anything its Amazon and other online retailers killing their business. Walmart itself is feeling the heat from Amazon .

Haven't been inside a mall in 2 years I think. There's nothing fun about going to the mall, just a huge waste of time. IMO malls should have more green space / in door park or something to do besides just getting ripped off then they would probably attract more young people.

I remember in Brampton companies had started to open shops as separate places around the market area.

I never disliked the mall, it was a good place to stroll around. Yes, it as a time waste though. But it was an adventure.

In Pakistan however, i have hated the mall culture, as its just a club for the elites. Overpriced items, plus to enter a mall in Islamabad you need to fulfill a criteria, not everyone is welcomed there.

Males going alone are charged 300 or 500( dont remember).

Lol wut? They charge y'all to enter a mall? This ain't no amusement park lmao.

I always prefer to buy clothes at malls. The variety is great and and you can always stop at a restaurant or do something else in between.

It is also good for killing time, especially if you go shopping with the missus and leave her to her business while you do something else.

They are also a necessity in hot countries. For example, it is unthinkable to not have malls in the UAE. People will get baked if they have to shop in an outdoor environment especially in the summers.

Of course there is always the option of online shopping, but many people, including myself, are not comfortable buying clothes and footwear without trying them on first, even if you know your exact size of a specific brand.

they actually do.

malls save up alot of space. In crowded cities, they do have a future

Future in terms of growth. Their market share will only go down and I can already see some empty ghost malls even in Mumbai and Delhi.

I can't stand malls, but then I don't really enjoy shopping anyway. I much prefer strolling outdoors in city centre streets, more atmosphere and fresh air make it a much more enjoyable experience where the shopping is not necessarily the focal point of an outing. But you do make a good point about malls being a godsend in hot countries, air conditioning would make it a lot easier. Here in Britain it's only in winter I would actually use a mall to get out of the rain or wind.
