Pakistan Cricket Board today announced details of Australia’s first tour of Pakistan since 1998, which will take place in March and April 2022, and comprise three Tests, three ODIs and one T20I.

The Tests will take place in Karachi (3-7 March), Rawalpindi (12-16 March) and Lahore (21-25 March), while Lahore will be the venue for the four white-ball matches to be played from 29 March to 5 April.

The Tests will be played as part of the ICC World Test Championship, while the ODIs will be connected to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League – a 13-team event from which the seven highest-placed sides and the hosts, India, will qualify directly for the event proper in 2023.

PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja, who played eight Tests and 18 ODIs against Australia: “I am delighted to welcome Australia to Pakistan. From a personal point of view, it pleases me no end that we’ll be engaged in a three-Test match series, connoisseurs delight.

“Australia are one of the high-performing sides and them playing in our backyard for the first time after a gap of 24 years will be a special treat for the fans.

“Likewise, it will be a great opportunity for the Australia cricketers to not only play at our iconic venues but also feel and enjoy the respect, love and hospitality that this great country offers, something which most of their previous generation of cricketers missed out by playing offshore.”

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Nick Hockley: “Cricket Australia is excited about the prospect of touring Pakistan next year for what will be a highly anticipated series in a country so incredibly passionate about the game and their national team.

“Pakistan is a formidable opposition with an exceptionally talented team, as evidenced by their dynamic performances in the current ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE.

“We thank the PCB for their considerable efforts in planning for the tour and look forward to continuing to work closely over the coming months to finalise the necessary operations, logistics, security and Covid-19 protocols.

“The safety and welfare of our players and staff remains our number one priority, and we will continue to work with the PCB and relevant agencies to ensure that appropriate and sufficient arrangements are put in place for the tour.”

As part of the reconnoitering process, Cricket Australia’s delegation will visit Pakistan to meet with PCB officials as well as provincial and federal authorities to discuss and finalise matters relating to team operations, logistics, security and Covid-19 protocols.

Australia last toured Pakistan in 1998-99 when Mark Taylor led them to a 1-0 series victory – their first since Richie Benaud’s side defeated Fazal Mahmood’s team by 2-0 in the 1959-60 series. Between the two series, Pakistan hosted Australia in 1964-65 (drew 0-0), 1979-80 (won 1-0), 1982-83 (won 3-0), 1988-89 (won 1-0) and 1994-95 (won 1-0).

Pakistan staged the last four series with Australia offshore – 2002-2003 (Colombo and Sharjah, Pakistan lost 3-0), 2010 (drew 1-1 in England), 2014-15 (won 2-0 in the UAE) and 2018-19 (won 1-0 in the UAE).

Schedule:

3-7 Mar – 1st Test, Karachi
12-16 Mar – 2nd Test, Rawalpindi
21-25 Mar – 3rd Test, Lahore
29 Mar – 1st ODI, Lahore
31 Mar – 2nd ODI, Lahore
2 Apr – 3rd ODI, Lahore
5 Apr – only T20I, Lahore

Here we go again :(

I don’t want to go through this mental abuse again

Yeah, good luck with that one.

Australia keeps pulling out of tours of Bangladesh, so the chances of going to a country like Pakistan don't really fill me with confidence.

3 Tests, 3 ODIs and a T20 across Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi? Australia?

I'll believe it when I see it.

Good to see this and I hope it goes through.

So tests and ODIs part of WTC and WSL respectively right?

Good news to Pakistan fans.
Even if they pull out ( which they wont ) , this is a very encouraging sign for Pakistan.

I already told in the previous threads that the cheapest and most workable solution for Pakistan cricket is to beat India this world cup.

Great going good luck for the tour. If they host it well, i would be happy if India tours Pakistan.
That will be too cool 😎

Well played Cricket Australia, well played. Their attempt at buttering us up ahead of the SF is visible for everyone to see.

The players need to go into the game thinking that Aus will cancel the tour, it’s only way we can beat them.

Are you so naive to think Australia and Pakistan started this negotiations after the semis were decided lol

I don't think being filled with pessimism is necessarily wise in this case. While it was a bad blow, I don't think the NZ and English pulling out was AS bad of a blow as some fans believe it to be. I don't think it has undone a decade's worth of hard work. It may have delayed it a little longer but it has not undone it.

Pakistan felt some aftershocks of the American withdrawal of Afghanistan and the NZ tour just lined up at the worst possible time. And I say this as someone who was actually supporting New Zealand's decision to leave. However, since then, good signs have come out. The NZC has itself said that it is considering a tour next year. Now, I know this is not much but it is good signs because after having pulled out, there was no need for them to consider a future tour, especially one as imminent as next year.

Shall we start taking bets on when they pull out?

I reckon 3 weeks and 4 days before their scheduled arrival.

Let's all have guesses - whoever is closest gets a lifetime of free biryani from the rest of us.

I hope upcoming west indies tour will give more confidence to Australia. Step by step we need to focus on west indies tour first.

After NZ last minute pull-out ,no one can believe this tour happen or not untill first Bowl bowled.

I hope the tour happens. Pakistan is as safe as can be now.

If Australia do go ahead and play the matches it will mean everything but I will wait this happens because we know anything can happen before the first ball is bowled.

I have a feeling that just before the match starts there will be a minor incident in some distant part of Pakistan and then Australian team will leave the country or refuse to travel. But of course Pakistan govt would have gone through considerable expenditure in planning and logistics for the tour.

It needn't even be in Pakistan.

Any of the Stans will do.

Just like LITERALLY everyone else, I have no expectations of this happening. Tour will be cancelled at the last hour.

What are the legal clauses in place in case of an Australian last minute cancellation?

Ramiz Raja was talking a big game, what has he done to ensure we are fully compensated?

May be on the provision Pakistan will let Australia to go T20 World Cup final.

Our neighbours are already working on a plan. The chance of this going ahead is lower than 0.

Lockdown the entire country for 2 months before the tour and deploy tons of security to ensure not even the smallest incident happens in any corner of the country to ensure that they don't run away.

Agree dates
Announce tour
Compliment Pakistan cricket and the nation

Then don't show up

Hope that's not what happens again.

Wonderful news, full tour by Australia , looks like good old days are coming back , after a very long and painful wait .

Great job Ramiz.

Don't like negative comments by some , I'm sure they are born pessimists.

My hope was on NZ and Eng and they both let us down. The Aussies are not even worth taking seriously.

I've got a feeling this tour will happen.

It's a great itinerary- good balance of Test & ODI, some of the classic Pakistan venues.

I actually think there's a high chance this goes ahead. Be surprised if it doesn't this time, whereas I never felt the past ones would happen.

The chances of this happening are less than me going to play PK in the less WC

Australia has not been touring pakistan for 24 years yet the blame goes to neighbours, talk about obsession. Even india has toured pakistan few times in that period.

Anyway as a cricket fan, I am looking forward to this series just like the previous nz and england tours.

What's good is that PSL is right before this tour. That should be a good platform to "show" all is well in Pakistan (as well as WI tour before PSL). If a month long PSL goes without a hitch, then no excuses for Aussies.

Inshallah this goes ahead. After all the uproar over NZ and England I can’t see Australia agreeing to tour and then canceling.

It will be great to see this tour in Pakistan. On one side, simply the announcement that Aus is agreeing to have a full and normal tour seems very encouraging to me. Another side, Aus has not toured Pakistan for 20-25 years. Eng, India etc were touring Pakistan in the 2000s, but not Aus. I will have to actually see Aus playing against Pakistan in Pakistan.

I don't have any confidence in this tour happening at all. Until the matches actually start and I see both teams literally on the ground playing, I won't have any faith in this going through.

Even when other international teams were having a full tour of Pakistan, Aus was not touring. If international teams having full tours was not convincing enough for Aus then PSL is not going to cut it. I don't think PSL will be such a big factor, to be honest.

The decision will be independent of PSL.

Tour's going ahead, near impossible for Australia to pull out from here.

I say that because once can sometimes be forgotten, Australia have first hand seen the backlash from NZ cancellation, if Pak get played like that again Australia's going to become a joke.

Yeah I'm gonna believe this when I'm actually physically in the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium watching the test match.

Not in living memory have I seen the Australian cricket team in Pakistan. I can’t wait for this tour to happen.

I will believe it when it happens. After the NZ fiasco I just don't believe anything. In Pak a visiting team can decide to return home in the middle of the match.

I can honestly understand why Pakistan fans are pessimistic since been unfairly burned so many times on aborted tours. I get it.

I just feel like this one is going to happen. Whatever Afghanistans issues, they are more stable and we are no longer at war with your neighbours. Pakistan has slowly and steadily increased its own security overall. The stadiums are getting done. The PSL has (mostly) come home. Momentum is building.

If this tour goes ahead and it has good chances of going ahead, rest all teams will follow.

Only problem is that the situation around pakistan is very fluid.

Pak fans seeing it as lollipop is understandable.
However I think this tour will happen successfully. We may see less number of matches but Aus will tour Pak.

IPL is in March, as is this tour. CA might allow their stars to pull out of tour to earn $$.
Ipl usually starts from April
Last ipl started from 9th april
And this tour will end before that
And playing tests with main team is important
Who cares about White ball cricket these days

I was lucky enough to watch Warne & co all those years ago now I’ll fly over with my kids to watch an odi in Lahore 🤞🏼

The tour will go ahead as planned.

That's surprising coming from you actually (not saying this in a bad way, usually you're a realist). How do you feel the security situation is in Pakistan currently? I don't really follow news much, but do you believe it is stable (enough to host Aussies successfully).

People are being excessively paranoid. They need to overcome the trauma and the PTSD caused by New Zealand. What happened was a one-off incident and not the norm.

You can expect New Zealand to tour pretty soon as well.

The security situation in Pakistan is very good. Pakistan is fully capable of hosting a tournament let alone a bilateral series.

However, the big challenge for Pakistan is that it has no credibility and no one has any faith in what we say.

Even a small, fake threat is enough to spook a team and they will not buy into Pakistan’s reassurances.

Pakistani fans and PCB need to accept the fact that teams will always assume the worst when it comes to Pakistan and not give us benefit of doubt.

Frankly speaking, we don’t deserve it either after what happened to Sri Lanka. Some mistakes are too big to forget and forgive.

Nevertheless, if there are no threats, there is no reason to assume that Australia or any other team will not tour.

Yep, good to hear and it makes sense.

They will have to tour because at a baseline level,. Pakistan has improved security (like how on travel advisories their risk level is equivalent to India/Bangladesh) and when security expoerts see the situation there is no excuses to worm out of Pakistan.

But yeah, there will always be a fear factor.

Personally, I think it's pretty likely Aus will tour but admittedly I'm a little.shaken by the NZ fiasco.

Ricky Ponting has backed David Warner and Marcus Harris to take on the new ball on upcoming subcontinental tours and urged Australia to resist the urge to tinker with their opening combination.

Warner, despite being dismissed by Stuart Broad for the 13th time on the opening day one of the SCG Test, is the current series' leading run scorer and recently suggested he may even look to play on as long as the return Ashes campaign in 2023.

The 35-year-old this summer has found an opening partner growing in assurance in Harris, who followed his Test-high 76 on a challenging MCG surface last week with another promising knock of 38 on another seaming pitch in Sydney.

Neither innings was the maiden Test ton Harris desperately craves and although Ponting believes the left-hander must get a bigger stride forward in when defending, the former Australia captain suggests there are the makings of a promising opening partnership.

It is an important endorsement given the man preferred as Warner's opening partner last summer, the luckless Will Pucovski, is set to make a low-key return in Victorian Premier Cricket this weekend.

The Aussies are set to face Pakistan on a three-Test tour beginning in March, while there is a scheduled Test series in Sri Lanka expected to be played later in the year before a looming Indian tour in 2023.

"If Warner and Harris are firmly entrenched in the team, then they're the openers for that (Pakistan) tour," Ponting told cricket.com.au.

"One thing that I know about very good international cricket teams is that very few that don't have good opening batters and very few good teams don't have good opening bowlers.

"If you can get those two combinations right and you can lock them in for long periods of time, then that's when you have some success.

"With Harris looking the part and starting to look a little bit more confident, hopefully he gets a really good long run at it now.

"It will actually be good for his development to play some cricket in those types of conditions as well."

While Pakistan may not be as spin-friendly as some expect (five of the top seven wicket takers in the six Tests played there in recent years have been pacemen), Australia will undoubtedly face more slow bowling there than they have since their last Asian tour two-and-a-half years ago.

And if their most recent tour to Sri Lanka in 2016 was anything to go by, when Australia lost 3-0 to a Rangana Herath-led home team, they will be in for a trial by spin when they tour there later this year.

When Australia last visited Asia for Tests – a 2018 series in the UAE against Pakistan, their first since sandpaper-gate – they deployed Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch as openers, neither of whom performed the role regularly at first-class level.

The ploy, based off the theory that runs on flat, low subcontinent pitches are easiest to score when the ball is new and hard, actually proved successful from a short sample; Finch and Khawaja put on 142 and 87 in the series opener before Khawaja injured his knee in the second Test.

But Ponting all but ruled a line through Australia trying a similar ploy for their first overseas Test tours anywhere since the 2019 Ashes.

"If it is easier to score, then those guys are going to score easier anyway, right?" he said. "Davey is going to score quicker, and potentially Marcus is going to score quicker as well.

"They were talking about that (in 2018) because they were trying to cash in with runs against the new ball, because they knew it was going get harder against the spin when the ball got older."

Warner and Harris have now passed fifty from their two most recent stands, starts England would kill for having lost a wicket before their score has reached double digits in all but one of their innings so far this series.

They are also starts Warner and Harris themselves would have happily taken against England in 2019 when they averaged 9.50 and 9.66 respectively.

"I just think (this current) opening combination that's still quite embryonic and hasn't had a lot of success together yet," said Ponting.

"They've just put back-to-back 50-plus partnerships together in the last couple of games, which is some good signs for them, considering in England last time they averaged about seven-and-a-half as an opening pair

"We always talk about how important that dynamic is between openers … so I certainly wouldn't be tinkering with it."

That may mean Australia must find another spot in their top order for Pucovski or take him as a reserve, should the prodigious right-hander show he has recovered from his latest concussion.

The 23-year-old will turn out for his Melbourne Cricket Club against Kingston in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs on Saturday, ahead of a possible return to Sheffield Shield ranks when the competition resumes next month.

"All he can do is get back into playing some good competitive cricket again, whatever that might be," said Ponting. "Get back into the groove of batting, get back into the groove of scoring runs and making make sure that he's available for that for selection for that (Pakistan) tour.

"If he does get some cricket under his belt, you'd like to think that he would that he would get picked on that tour if they think he's if they think he's physically ready.

"Because I think the sooner we can get him back in and around the group, the better it's going to be for him."

"You can just see he's a little bit reluctant to get a good stride forward.

"He ends up moving his front foot again after he's played his forward defensive shot.

"That's something that he'll work on. I'm sure that's something that will actually come the more confidence he gets, and the more confidence he gets in his in his defensive game.

"That will come but he did look good today, I thought a big innings was there for the taking for him."

Australia have outperformed Pakistan in every department. Better openers, better all rounders, better tailenders with the bat.
And in the bowling department they have better quick bowlers and better spinner too.
