I read an old Imran Khan autobiography from 1992 right after we won the WC and to my surprise beyond Wasim and Waqar, he goes out of his way to praise Aqib Javed for having a sharp cricketing brain, being a complete team man.
It puzzles me as to how he under achieved in his overall career. Sure with Wasim and Waqar it was hard for him to have a consistent place in the side.
But i do believe the exit of Imran Khan hurt his career later on. When Ik was captain he would give the same kind of confidence and backing to Aqib as he would to Wasim and Waqar, he would attack with him to take wickets. IK would make sure Aqib played in his team all the time.
Not sure what happened after IK's exit but Aqib never had a settled place in the squad after wards, successive captains never used him as a strike bowler. Plus in the Qayyum report, it was mentioned that Akram deliberately kept Aqib out of the team as captain.
