Did the Pakistan Cricket Board, media, and fan obsession over strike rates cost us at the T20 World Cup?

Instead of strengthening the Pakistan batting line-up with batsmen who could score runs and stick around for at least a few overs the focus was on players who batted at 150+ strike rates. Inspired by the butler, miller, and warner's of the world we went searching for our very own but ended up picking players who could hit the odd six in local leagues. The PCB was intent on teaching the players how to hit sixes when perhaps the focus should have been on running between the wickets, finding gaps, managing game awareness, and general fitness (A haphazardly organized training camp right before the WC does not count).

We ended up fielding players who could barely hold a bat on the international stage and froze under the first sign of pressure, embarrassing the nation when we should have had two wins in two games to start the campaign. Hoping to take the additional step and win the WC compared to the last few T20 world cups, we took several steps back and did not even make it past round 1. Somewhere in our search for the ideal batsmen who scored runs with intent, we ended up picking 3-4 deadweight batsmen which cost us each game. In search of a diamond, we lost the gold - Instead of playing knockouts with a chance to win the WC we should be playing the qualifiers for the next WC (if not for our prior ranking).

We can change the captain (which we should have done a while ago and stuck with it), we can play all rounders for more balance (who should bat at 7 and 8 and not higher), but should our top priority not be to find a couple of batsmen who can hold a bat on the international stage and not crumble against the slightest pressure?

Strike-rate is important, but coming into this tournament we should have had a re-think about having rubbish like Azam and Shadab in the middle order consistently.

Selectors should send an SOS for lack of middle order batsmen.

We've had no middle order in white ball since 2007. Pretty ridiculous that in 17 years we haven't solved this issue.

When did we go searching for a butler or Warner or Miller?

Our openers are hilarious? And chacha is a crapola finisher, his sr is no different then babar or rizwam despite batting low at no 7?

We have never searched for these players or tried to develop em.

If you're talking about saim, Fair enough but Warner and Butler function well with other hitman at the crease. Even if saim is failing, and one day he succeeds, It doesn't help that rizwan will be at the other end to ruin the progress made.

You’re right! The PCB miscalculated big time. They thought the pitches in the US and the Caribbean would be like those in the PSL and IPL, where even players like Shadab and Azam could hit like Gayle. However, it turned out to be quite the opposite. The pitches in this World Cup have been quite difficult to bat on, requiring proper batsmen to score runs. Had Pakistan selected proper batsmen, the result might have been different.

What obsession over strike rate? The PCB selected a bunch of players with lacklustre striker rates. If anything they picked the perfect players based on your criteria i.e. tuk tuks who love taking singles and play for averages.

Dallas is a high scoring ground. Only New york was difficult to bat on. In Dallas Canada posted 190 odd. USA hunted down. Pakistan only scored 159 on the same ground. Hence it was within the reach of USA. But for some panicking USA should have won comfortably without going into super over.

Pakistani batters must improve their strike rates in T20 cricket if they want to win games consistently against the top sides. This is the fact and I hope Gary can help our batters to improve their striking ability.
