“I feel betrayed.

“Some people, I feel, don’t want me here. Not just this year, but last year too.”

Ronaldo also touched on his relationship with Ten Hag, adding: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.

“If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.”

He also spoke on Ralf Ragnick’s time at the club, who was appointed interim manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure last season.

The Austrian has had significant success as a director of football but had not managed a team for 10 years before taking over at United in November last year, with Ronaldo commenting: “If you’re not even a coach, how are you going to be the boss of Manchester United? I’d never even heard of him.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------

On Wayne Rooney:

“I don’t know why he criticises me so badly... probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at high level.”

Then he chuckles and adds: “I’m not going to say that I’m looking better than him. Which is true..”

-------------------------------------------------------------------

When his three-month-old daughter was hospitalised in July, and he could not return on time for pre-season training because he wanted to stay with her.

Ronaldo says senior executives at Old Trafford even doubted him when he explained why he couldn’t return, which made him feel “hurt” and “bad”.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

He was heading to United’s great rivals Manchester City when a personal appeal from his great mentor and father figure, Sir Alex Ferguson, drove him back to where he started.

“I followed my heart,” he says simply, tapping his chest. “He (Sir Alex) said to me, ‘It’s impossible for you to come to Manchester City’, and I said, ‘OK, Boss’.”

“The progress was zero,” he sighs. “Since Sir Alex left, I saw no evolution in the club. Nothing had changed.”

“I think the fans should know the truth,” he says. “I want the best for the club. This is why I come to Manchester United.

“But you have some things inside that don’t help (us) reach the top level as City, Liverpool and even now Arsenal . . . a club with this dimension should be top of the tree in my opinion and they are not unfortunately.”

He says: “As Picasso said, you have to destroy it to rebuild it (the artist’s exact quote was: ‘Every act of creation is first an act of destruction.’) and if they start with me, for me, it’s not a problem.

"I love Manchester United, I love the fans, they’re always on my side. But if they want to do it different… they have to change many, many things.”

As for what Sir Alex thinks of the current situation, Ronaldo says: “He knows better than anybody that the club is not on the path they deserve to be.

"He knows. Everyone knows. The people who don’t see that… it’s because they don’t want to see; they are blind.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Whatever happens, he made it clear to me that his heart will always be with the club and especially its fans.

He says: “They are the most important things in football. You play for them.

“They are always on my side. I feel that every time when I go out, when I walk in the streets, the fans come up to me and they appreciate what I do for football.

“The fans for me are everything. This is why I give this interview, because I think it’s the right time to speak my mind.”

You are not the same player you were at your prime, Cristiano. Man Utd made you in to a global superstar for which you should be thankful. Nothing wrong if the they think you are past your best so want to get rid off you.

This clown has the audacity to talk smack about Rooney. Wayne is a far bigger Man United legend than Penaldo. Man United fans have goldfish memories. They forget that he used Man United as a stepping stone to get a move to Real Madrid. He never loved Man United. He has only ever loved himself. I can't stand him. I always appreciated him as a player but always disliked his personality.

I have never been a fan of football, and don’t even know the A, B, C of it.

For football fans, leaving aside his ego, how good of a player he has been?

He was a brilliant player. At his best, he was a tricky winger who used to go past players for fun. But over the last 5-6 years, as he has got older, he has become a penalty box striker and offers very little other than goals. He isn’t a top level footballer anymore. But at his best, which I say was from 2006-15, definitely one of the goats.

Ok, thanks.

If anyone can feel aggrieved by Ronaldo’s treatment at United it is actually Edinson Cavani. Suddenly he was left on the bench and the club still wouldn’t release him for the World Cup qualifiers v Argentina and Brazil.

Cavani really was betrayed. Whereas Ronaldo doesn’t like the fact that he isn’t mobile enough to start in an ETH team.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he feels "betrayed" by Manchester United for trying to force him out of the club and says he has "no respect" for boss Erik ten Hag because he "doesn't show respect for me".

In an interview with Piers Morgan for TalkTV released by The Sun on Sunday night, Ronaldo also claimed there has been "zero progress" at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in the summer of 2013.

When asked if United's hierarchy were trying to force him out of the club, Ronaldo said: "Yes. Not only the coach, but the other two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed."

When quizzed again if senior club executives were trying to oust him, the 37-year-old replied: "Honestly, I don't know. I don't care. People should hear the truth. Yes, I feel betrayed. Some people don't want me here not only this year, but last year too.

"I don't know what's going on. Since Sir Alex Ferguson left I have seen not evolution in the club. The progress was zero.

"For example, an interesting point is how a club like Manchester United sacked Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer), they bring in a sporting director Ralf Rangnick which is something nobody understands. This guy is not even a coach! A big club like Manchester United bringing in a sporting director surprised not only me but all the world.

Ronaldo’s big flashpoints this season

July 31: Manchester United 1-1 Rayo Vallecano: Ronaldo leaves Old Trafford mid-way through United’s pre-season friendly along with other members of the squad. Ten Hag described it as “not acceptable”.
October 2: Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United – Ronaldo was left on the bench despite United being 4-0 down at half-time. Ten Hag said he did not bring the 37-year-old on out of “respect” for Ronaldo’s career.
October 19: Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham – Ronaldo refuses to come onto the pitch as a substitute and storms down the tunnel before full-time.
October 22: Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United – Ronaldo is suspended by United for disciplinary reasons in the aftermath of the Tottenham match.
November 10: Manchester United 4-2 Aston Villa – After returning for two Premier League games after his suspension, Ronaldo is declared ill by Ten Hag and is not included in the matchday squad for their Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa.
November 13: Fulham 1-2 Manchester United – Ronaldo is still missing from the United matchday squad and later that evening, his shock interview criticising the club is released.

"Nothing changes. Not only the jacuzzi, the pool, even the gym. Even some points of technology, the kitchen, the chefs - who I appreciate, lovely people! They stop in time which surprised me a lot.

"I thought I would see different things, technology, infrastructure. Unfortunately, we see many things I'm used to seeing when I'm 21, 22, 23. It surprised me a lot."

Ronaldo also said of Ten Hag: "I don't have respect for him because he doesn't show respect for me. If you don't have respect for me, I'm never gonna have respect for you."

Ronaldo, who re-joined United in August 2021 and finished as their top scorer in all competitions last season with 24 goals, asked to leave the club in the summer.

"I think the fans should know the truth," the Portugal international added. "I want the best for the club. This is why I come to Manchester United.

"But you have some things inside that don't help [us] reach the top level as City, Liverpool and even now Arsenal...a club with this dimension should be top of the tree in my opinion and they are not unfortunately.

"As Picasso said, you have to destroy it to rebuild it (the artist's exact quote was: 'Every act of creation is first an act of destruction') and if they start with me, for me, it's not a problem.

"I love Manchester United, I love the fans, they're always on my side. But if they want to do it different… they have to change many, many things."

Ronaldo was also critical of former United team-mate Wayne Rooney after the Englishman said he is in danger of becoming an "unwanted distraction" at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo said of Rooney: "I don't know why he criticises me so badly...probably because he finished his career and I'm still playing at a high level.

"I'm not going to say that I'm looking better than him. Which is true..."

Ronaldo, who recently captained United in their 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa, also revealed how former boss Ferguson persuaded him to return to the club last summer.

"I followed my heart," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said. "He [Sir Alex] said to me, 'It's impossible for you to come to Manchester City', and I said, 'OK, boss'."

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson presents Ronaldo with an award before the 0-0 draw against Newcastle last month
Asked what Ferguson thinks of United's current situation, Ronaldo added: "He knows better than anybody that the club is not on the path they deserve to be.

"He knows. Everyone knows. The people who don't see that… it's because they don't want to see; they are blind."

Ten Hag and Man Utd players 'extremely disappointed'

Sky Sports News understands Ten Hag and the Manchester United players are extremely disappointed with the manner and timing of Ronaldo's interview.

The club only found out about the interview as they were preparing to fly back from London on Sunday evening following their 2-1 win over Fulham and they do not understand why he has said what he has said.

They are hugely disappointed that he would disrespect the club, his manager and team-mates in this way and United are likely to consider all their options now regarding the player.

Ronaldo was told on Thursday that he would not be in the starting XI against Fulham but he would have been in the squad. He told the club he was ill.

No one at United has ever criticised or disrespected Ronaldo - even when he refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham.

Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established.

Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans.

The guy is asking for too much money for whatever football he has at this level unfortunately

Ronaldo would be an ideal player for any CL team at £200k a week max

There is zero chance Cristiano Ronaldo will play for Manchester United again, according to Old Trafford legend Teddy Sheringham.

Ronaldo said he felt ‘disrespected’ and ‘betrayed’ by the club in a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan for TalkTV.

It has been a tense season for the 37-year-old at Old Trafford that started with him wanting to leave and has seen him refuse to come on despite being instructed by manager Erik ten Hag.

Now Ronaldo has put his side of the story across before the Portugal superstar flies to Qatar for the World Cup, and it’s likely to have signalled the end of his time at United.

Sheringham, who played 153 times for the Red Devils, says there is no coming back from this.

He told talkSPORT Breakfast: “If I’m hearing it right that he doesn’t respect the manager and has been disrespected. No chance he will play for Manchester United again, not after this.

“It sounds like there is going to be more that Piers Morgan will come out with. You cannot attack your football club and expect everything to be hunky dory when you come back from the World Cup.”

Sheringham also questioned Ronaldo’s behaviour this season and believes others at the club will have lost respect for him due to his actions.

The former striker added: “Obviously Cristiano has his own ways of thinking, but when you join a football club, the football people want you to produce your best football moments. That’s all it is really.

“I’d be very surprised if he was trying to be forced out. Disrespected… I don’t know. If you are still performing at the highest level, people respect you.

“If you are doing things in and around the football club that you shouldn’t be, like walking off down the tunnel when you should be part of the team, that’s when people lose the respect for you.

“I think it works hand in hand.”

Ronaldo has just one Premier League goal this season in ten total appearances, with just four of them being starts.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is an undisputed legend of the game, but Sheringham feels he is past his best now.

He said: “You’ve got to realise yourself that you’re not 29 any more, he’s past his best and you’ve got to understand you are going to be used sparingly when you get to that age.

“You cannot play every game. He wants to be the main man. He’s fit and looks great, but it comes to all of us at some stage that you become past your best.

“If he was to realise that and let Ten Hag use him in the manner he feels fit, and he respects that and he obviously says he doesn’t respect Ten Hag, and there’s the problem straight away.

“That’s the main issue the way I see it. If you don’t have respect for the manager then it doesn’t matter what else you do.”

ronaldo is arguably the greatest, and definitely one of the two best players of his generation. no one forced united to sign him, and despite his gargantuan ego he has performed most teams he's played for. its not like united did not know what they were getting when they resigned him.

im not a serious football fan, but having been around a lot of football fans, esp British, the majority of the casuals are pretty insufferable, hero worship and abuse players in equal measure, act like playing for a specific club actually means anything (it doesn't anymore), and then celebrate what is in a nutshell a business operation.

fwiw club football has had the soul sucked out of it, football players are mercenaries and invariably the richest clubs dominate. the fact that people are still emotionally invested in teams (sometimes not even from the area they live or have lived in) is beyond perplexing to me.

He is seriously undermining Ten Hags good work, and after this story, his utd career is over.

Look at this shameless guy Ronaldo having a go at Rooney. Wazza was and will always be a bigger club legend at Man United than Ronaldo ever will be.

The guy is asking for too much money for whatever football he has at this level unfortunately

Ronaldo would be an ideal player for any CL team at £200k a week max

The guy is stinking the place out in Europa League against opposition that are more Europa Conference League level. He isn't a Champions League player anymore. He is done at the highest level.

His selfish and obnoxious personality has always been a problem.

He is the vainest man imaginable, and extremely self-centred. Remember when he tried to engineer a move away from Real Madrid by saying “I am sad”?

He is extremely talented and a very hard trainer. But consider how Portugal as a national team is so much less than the sum of its parts thanks to him.

Ronaldo has always been vain. The guy is out posting pictures of his abs on social media. He is a narcissist.

Cavani was really good in his first season at United, scoring nearly 20 goals. Ronaldo comes and not only does Cavani have to give up his number 7 shirt, he also had to sit on the bench.

Even during his first spell at United, Ronaldo was saying something along the lines of how "he is being treated like a slave" as he was trying to force a move to Real Madrid. He has never loved Man United. He has always loved himself and his brand.

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo says the club's owners, the Glazer family, "don't care about the club" on the sporting side.

Ronaldo made headlines after telling Talk TV he felt "betrayed" by the club - and another section of that interview was released on Monday night.

"Manchester are a marketing club - they get money from the marketing," he said.

"It will be hard for Manchester to be top of the game in the next two or three years."

What next for Ronaldo?

The 37-year-old Portugal forward, who has only scored one Premier League goal this season, said: "The owners of the club, the Glazers, they don't care about the club, professional sport."

Ronaldo added that he has never met the Glazers, who took over the club in 2005.

United's only public response to the Ronaldo interview was issued earlier on Monday, when the club said: "Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo. The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established.

"Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans."

Fans have staged a number of protests against the Glazers' running of the club, who last won a trophy with the Europa League in 2017.

"The fans are always right," said Portugal captain Ronaldo. "They should know the truth. The players want the best for the club. I want the best for the club. This is why I came to Manchester United, this is why I love this club.

"You have some things inside the club which don't help Manchester reach the top level like City, Liverpool and even now Arsenal.

"It's complicated. It's difficult. It's hard."

On the Sunday section of the interview, Ronaldo was asked if he was angry that he had been criticised by former United team-mate Wayne Rooney - who now manages DC United.

Ronaldo said: "Probably, because he finished his career in his thirties. So, I'm still playing at a high level. I'm not going to say that I'm looking better than him, which is true, but..."

In Monday's segment, he turned his attention to another old United colleague - Gary Neville.

He recently blanked the former England right-back, who was working as a Sky Sports pundit.

"It's hard to listen to that kind of criticism and negativity about people who play with you. For example, Gary Neville, as well. They are not my friends," said Ronaldo.

"It's easy to criticise. I don't know if you have a job in television that they must criticise to be more famous, I really don't understand.

"I think they take advantage of [my profile] because they are not stupid. It's hard when you see people who were in the dressing room with you criticising that way."

What happened before now?

In the previously released section of the interview, Ronaldo - who earns £500,000 a week - claims the club are trying to force him out and he does not respect manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo scored 118 goals for United between 2003 and 2009 and his return in the summer of 2021 was celebrated by the club fanbase - although he seems to have alienated a large section of them with this interview, which will be shown in full this week.

He is currently with the Portugal squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Manchester United players are disappointed with the way Cristiano Ronaldo has behaved, but they want to focus on football and not get involved in off-the-pitch issues.

Ronaldo's bombshell interview with TalkTV, published by The Sun on Sunday evening, saw the 37-year-old criticise the club and manager Erik ten Hag, who the player says he has "no respect" for.

On Monday evening more footage from the interview was released, with Ronaldo claiming members of the United hierarchy doubted him when he said he could not attend pre-season because his daughter was ill in hospital.

Ronaldo has now joined up with the Portugal squad ahead of the World Cup and was given a frosty reception by his United team-mate Bruno Fernandes following the interview.

Meanwhile, United's lawyers will keep studying comments Ronaldo has made as and when they are released and all options will be considered.

The forward said he feels "betrayed" by Manchester United for trying to force him out of the club, with Ronaldo claiming United have made "zero progress" since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

United responded to the interview on Monday with the following statement: "Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans."

Senior figures at the club are holding talks about how to deal with the player.

The club only found out about the interview as they were preparing to fly back from London on Sunday evening following their 2-1 win over Fulham and they do not understand why he has said what he has said.

Ronaldo was told on Thursday that he would not be in the starting XI against Fulham but he would have been in the squad. He told the club he was ill.

Wow, he is really that good?

Ronaldo is far superior to Kohli.

He is considered by many as the GOAT of footballers. Kohli isnt even in the top 10 of greatest cricketers imo.

On topic.

Its a shame much of the media are attacking him for criticising but are not hearing what he actually said, which was spot on.

Utd have treated this man like a joke and he should be able to leave.

<I>Cristiano Ronaldo took part in an interview where he criticised Man Utd and manager Erik ten Hag; club will consider legal advice before responding to 37-year-old's claims; Sky Sports News understands Ten Hag and United players are extremely disappointed with manner and timing of interview</I>

"The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established.

When asked if United's hierarchy were trying to force him out of the club, Ronaldo said: "Yes. Not only the coach, but the other two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed."

When quizzed again if senior club executives were trying to oust him, he replied: "Honestly, I don't know.

Portugal midfielder Joao Mario has revealed Ronaldo has been unaffected by the recent media about him and says he is always happy when he joins up with his country for international duty.

"Ronaldo is always happy when he's with the national team. I saw him yesterday and he's quite fine, as always. As he's said before, he feels it's always a pleasure to be here.

"He's totally focused on the national team and for sure he's going to be a big help for us in this World Cup. The timing? The headlines are always about him so it's the same as always for us.

"I don't see a problem about the timing."

No player can criticise his club manager publicly and expect to play under him again. Then the manager has to go or the player has to go. In this instance, it's Ronaldo that has to go.

Having said that, most Man Utd fans would have applauded him for saying what he said if he had not criticised his manager Erik Ten Haag. By and large (based on what's come out), most of what he said is completely correct. Including his comments about ETH.

BUT, he should NOT have criticised his manager publicly in the way he did.
. That was a step too far.

I think a lot of the criticisms about the club and the ownership are probably valid, but you don’t go after your boss in public, and Ronaldo has misread using ETH as a target because the United fans are very supportive of ETH and can see that he is the man to take the club in the right direction after however many years of underperformance and disaster.

If you are Ronaldo, that’s exactly what you should do.

I don’t think he is the first, Stone Cold Steve Austin didn’t get along with Vince either did he :yk3

Ronaldo is doing the club a favour with the public criticism, maybe they will do something about it now. He isn’t the first to say these things and wont be the last.

United fans need to get off their high horse, they’ve achieved very little post Fergie days.

This was disgusting from the United higher ups, don’t see anyone criticising this

Ronaldo was fine last season. Played brilliantly, carried the team on his shoulders. Things changed when United failed to make the UCL in spite of all his best efforts.

He is all about personal records. He was desperate to spend the last few years of career in the UCL because he wants to protect his top scorer record from Messi.

He offered himself to nearly every UCL club, no one wanted to buy him because he carries too much baggage and it is not worth it considering his age.

That damaged his ego big time and also soured his relations with United. You can’t try to force yourself out of the club and then demand respect when you don’t get your way.

Furthermore, unlike Ole, Ten Haag is not a puppet of the United establishment (the old boys club of Fergie, Neville, Keane, Ole etc.) and he will do whatever he thinks is the right thing for the club.

He will not get swayed by the comments of the old boys club in the media or Fergie giving him a call.

He is a young manager who likes working with youth and demands a lot of intensity from his players.

Ronaldo at 37 does not have the energy and commitment to play the type of football Ten Haag expects.

Ronaldo is used to clubs and managers bending over backwards to appease his ego. That is not happening this season and he doesn’t know how to cope with it.

His criticism of the club is legit. There is no doubt United has been run like a circus over the last decade, but we need to realize that Ronaldo is only concerned with the way he has been treated personally and it is largely his own undoing.

He should not have acted the way he did last summer and he should be more respectful if he doesn’t fit into the plans of the new manager.

Ronaldo was fine last season. Played brilliantly, carried the team on his shoulders. Things changed when United failed to make the UCL in spite of all his best efforts.

He wasn’t brilliant last season. He scored goals but as an overall footballer, he is dead. In modern football, strikers have to do more than just score. A perfect example of a modern day striker is Gabriel Jesus or Roberto Firmino, players who score goals but also can do other aspects such as holding up the ball, linking the play and pressing. In matches that Ronaldo doesn’t score, you are playing with ten men.

And what good did Ronaldo’s goals do for Man United? The season before last, United finished second without Ronaldo. With his goals, we finished sixth. People keep saying that Ronaldo carried us. Yeah, he carried us to the Europa League.

He offered himself to nearly every UCL club, no one wanted to buy him because he carries too much baggage and it is not worth it considering his age.

This season, he is stinking up the place in Europa league against opposition that are more Europa Conference league level. He is done as a top level footballer. He has been for some time, truth be told. No top CL club will want him, expect for Chelsea, maybe, because their new owner isn’t the brightest chap.

His criticism of the club is legit. There is no doubt United has been run like a circus over the last decade, but we need to realize that Ronaldo is only concerned with the way he has been treated personally and it is largely his own undoing.

His criticism of the Glazers may be legit, but he knew what the glazers were all about before he came back. The glazers were also the owners during Ronaldo’s first spell at the club. He knew exactly what type of owners they are, yet, he was happy to come back and take a half a million a week from them in salary.

Where was this criticism last season when he was playing regularly? It’s obvious that Ronaldo has thrown his toys out of the pram and the criticism of the Glazers is just to influence gullible fans to be on his side, because he knows that all the United fans share anti Glazers sentiments. Ronaldo isn’t stupid.

Also, it is funny that he talks about the glazers being all about commercial and marketing. We can say the same thing about Ronaldo. The reason why he is still playing at the highest level is because of the CR7 brand, because ability wise, he should be playing in the MLS.

He should not have acted the way he did last summer and he should be more respectful if he doesn’t fit into the plans of the new manager.

He has been the main man at every team he has played for the last 17-18 years. Now, he isn’t the main man at Man United anymore and he can’t handle it. This is what happens when one has an inflated ego. He needs to humble himself and accept the fact that Father Time catches up to everyone.

People will always hate him because he has a massive ego, but that was also his strength. You don't look like him at 37 without hard work and discipline, but even with all his efforts he's not a CL player any more. Also, he could have gone out gracefully by just playing his part as a squad player at Man U. You can't dictate which games you play when you are closer to 40 than 30.

Watched the first part of the interview tonight.

Some parts he came across as arrogant but other parts he was spot on.

Man Utd is a different club to what it was when he was there originally and it's clear he still wants Utd to do well.

However there will be no way back for him at Man Utd after this interview.

I feel after the tragedy he experienced, he also has mental health issues and the lack of support from the club has clearly impacted him

Parts about the decline of Utd are correct, but for me the majority of ego stroking was painful to watch. 2 men in complete denial further deluding each other.

They can't fathom the idea that anyone could possibly have a valid criticism of this guy. The only reason they could think of is that these rich, successful, decorated footballers like Neville and Rooney must be jealous of his looks and Instagram followers. I would laugh but I felt 2nd hand embarrassment instead.

Did Piers put to him any of the actual points that these jealous ex-teammates were making? Did he ask about Ronaldo refusing to be substituted on? Did he ask about Ronaldo leaving before the match finished twice? Do they discuss about whether a 37 year-old Ronaldo can play in a high-intensity pressing side?

Instead, they speculate on whether it's his good looks or massive charisma that makes him the most followed human on Instagram.

Ronaldo admits he was about to join Man City had it not been for the intervention of Sir Alex, and in his mind that shows his love and loyalty for United? He had to be metaphorically slapped across the face to just about prevent him from joining one of their biggest rivals :)))

As Ronaldo's buddy Rio said, that same beloved Sir Alex sold his best players, the likes of Beckham, Keane, van Nistelrooy, Stam because they thought they were bigger than the club, and Ronaldo will be sold for the same reason.

Ferdinand, who was one of Ronaldo's biggest defenders, spot on here:

Ferdinand told Vibe with Five: “The book has been closed. He’s snookered the club and put them into a position where there’s no way back.

“Whether anyone at the club wanted to keep Cristiano, they can’t now after what he said.

“If the interview was two minutes long, not an hour or two, and he said the comment ‘I don’t respect the manager’, regardless of anything else, that is going to be the reason why he goes.

“I played with players like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Jaap Stam [before I was there], all players the manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] booted out the football club because he said they thought they were players that were bigger than the club at the time for different reasons. All of them reasons by the way were nothing like what we have seen from Cristiano.

“Us, everyone in the media, fans knew this moment was coming.”

Ferdinand added: “You can’t sit here and defend that from Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Deep down and I know it for a fact, this has all been manufactured for one thing - and that’s for him to leave the club.

“I don’t feel there’s any way back, I don’t feel the club will take him back and I don’t think that he wants to come back. This is all manufactured for that reason.

“Up to this interview I would defend him, and say the club have a big responsibility to communicate better.

“How are the club going to allow Ronaldo to come back and undermine their current manager? They can’t.”

He said he was close to joining Man City, yet gullible Man United fans thinks that he loves the club. Lol. Ronaldo loves only himself.

And it isn't surprising that Piers Morgan conducted this interview. He is one of the most insufferable human being alive.

I agree with you regards Morgan but Ronaldo is still the best finisher , most intelligent and game changer in Utd squad , not to mention the greatest player to play for Utd . If he signed for city he’d be scoring on par with Halland. He’s not there to press , run like a fool in an average team . Your team isn’t good enough to make use of his ability . Your club is being ruined by the owners , Utd fans should respect Ronaldo for caring enough , clearly more than them . Only a crazy person or Man Utd loyalist would rather sign for Utd then city .

Cristiano Ronaldo says he was close to joining Manchester City before following his "heart" by re-joining Manchester United.

The Portugal forward made headlines earlier this week after telling Talk TV he felt "betrayed" by the club.

The first part of the full interview was released on Wednesday in which he gave more detail on his version of events at Old Trafford.

"Honestly, it was close," he said of potentially joining City.

Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford from Juventus in August 2021 - 11 years after he left the club to join Real Madrid.

At the time it was reported he was wanted by City boss Pep Guardiola and, although Ronaldo confirmed the interest, he said he decided to sign for United after speaking with his old manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 37-year-old added: "As you know, my history in Manchester United, your heart, you're feeling the way that you did before, makes the difference. And of course, Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I spoke with him. He said to me, 'it's impossible for you to come to Manchester City'. And I say 'OK, boss'."

'Young players don't care'

Ronaldo, who will miss Portugal's friendly with Nigeria on Thursday because of a stomach bug, criticised the attitude and professionalism of young footballers during the interview, accusing them of "not respecting" their older and more experienced team-mates.

"Their hunger [is different]," he added. "I think they have things more easily, everything's easy, they don't suffer - and they don't care.

"I don't mean only a few in Manchester United, but all the teams in all leagues in the world, the youngers are not the same of my generation.

"But you cannot blame them, because it's part of the life and the new generation, the new technologies that distract them."

Cristiano Ronaldo and Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot, right, was singled out by Cristiano Ronaldo as a player he admires
Ronaldo singled out his United and Portugal team-mate Diogo Dalot, 23, as one of the few young players he could praise.

Ronaldo also said Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro are other players he admires at the club.

'In Manchester United I can mention Dalot," he said. "He's young, but very professional but I don't doubt that he's going to have longevity in football because he's young, he's smart, intelligent and he's very professional. Probably Martinez, Casemiro is in his 30s, but I will say Dalot.'

'I'd never heard of Rangnick'

Just over two months after Ronaldo returned to United, his former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked as manager and replaced by Ralf Rangnick, who was named interim coach until the end of the season.

The German had been coach of RB Leipzig, Schalke and several others clubs in his native country and credited with influencing managers like Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel with his football philosophy.

But Ronaldo said he was surprised by the appointment.

"This guy is not even a coach," he added. "A big club like Manchester United bringing a sport directive surprised not only me but all the world."

Asked if he had heard of Rangnick, Ronaldo added: "No, of course not. Nobody, the people who I spoke to knew.

"I respect [him], all the coaches in my career I had to call them the boss, but deep inside me I never saw him as the boss because I saw some points that I never agreed."

Ronaldo also criticised Manchester United legends Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville after both had recently questioned his behaviour.

Rooney said last week Ronaldo risked becoming an unwanted distraction at the club following his refusal to come on as substitute in the home defeat by Tottenham last month.

And the Portuguese said of Rooney: "I don't know why he criticises me so bad, I don't know if he's jealous of me.

"I really don't understand people like that or if they want to be on the front cover of the news or they want a new job or whatever.

"Probably [it's jealousy] because he finished his career with 30s. I'm still playing a high level."

On Neville, he added: "They are not my friends, they are colleagues. We are not having dinner together for example.

"But it's part of my journey. They keep criticising me every time, so I continue my trip and I have to catch up with the people who like me."

Two different issues. He deserves admiration for his dedication to looking after himself, not many players can perform like he has in his late 30's. Many have lost their way even in their late 20's so let's give credit where it's due.

But on the other side, it's not a one man game any more, he has to respect his team mates, and this is where I think he is rightly criticised. Man U are not the best team any more, but they are fighting for a CL spot, and he should have put the team above his own needs. I think some people are just having a go at him because they can't abide his oversized ego. But that doesn't mean some of what he says isn't valid, especially the club disregard of the loss of his son.

Gary Neville has said Manchester United "know they have to terminate" Cristiano Ronaldo's contract.

In an interview with TalkTV, the Portugal forward said he had no respect for manager Erik ten Tag and felt "betrayed" by the club.

Ronaldo also criticised on the club's owners and his former United team-mates Neville and Wayne Rooney.

Supporters have been critical of the striker, with some believing he is ruining his legacy at Old Trafford.

"He wouldn't have done this interview if he wanted a way back. He knew it would bring the headlines it has and be the end of his Manchester United career," Neville told Sky Sports.

"I'm wondering what Manchester United are doing because the reality of it is they know they have to terminate Cristiano's contract or they basically open up a precedent so any player can criticise them in the future.

"I agree with some of the things Cristiano has said, and many Manchester United fans will agree with many things Cristiano has said, but the reality is if you're an employee within a business and say those things your employment has to terminate, and Manchester United have to do that in the next few days."

Neville argued the club are also partially responsible for the way the relationship with Ronaldo has deteriorated.

"They could have come together a couple of weeks ago and navigated a pathway through what could have potentially been choppy seas to the shore but it's not happened. They've both basically backed themselves into a corner," he added.

"Exits don't have to happen this way if both sides are proactive and mature."

Mr Egomanic is done as top level footballer. He has been for many years. He is just a goal scorer now and not a complete modern day striker. The only reason he is effective is if you build a team around him. Juventus did that and they went from a team that won Serie A every year to a team that is now a complete joke.

We did the same last season and played to his strengths, and he scored his goals but we finished sixth and had our worst ever season in the premier league. The season before the Underwear Model re-signed for us, we finished second.

I have been a Man United fan since early 2000s, and the Glazers have been the owners since 2005, so most of my time supporting Man United, the Glazers have been the owners. So I know just how bad they are. And guess what? So does Mr Narcissist, but yet he came back after Man City rejected him, and was happy to take half a million of the Glazer's money in weekly salary.

Where was this criticism of the Glazers last year? It's obvious that Mr Has-been's ego can't handle the fact that he isn't playing regularly and as a result, he has thrown his toys out of the pram. If he was playing regularly, he wouldn't have done this interview.

Ronaldo only cares about one thing. That is himself and his brand. This is a guy who has got upset after his team mate scored a goal because he didn't score the goal himself. That is the sort of selfish individual he is. But you put up with him, when he is great and playing at his peak. But when he is finished, you get rid and that is exactly what Man United should have done with him in the summer.

He should be a model. I don't care about his looks or his abs.

And I don't deny that some of the things that he has said in his interview, especially regarding the state of the club and the way it is fun isn't true. But he is not doing it out of love for the club, despite what he may say. He is only doing it because he isn't playing regularly anymore and his massive ego can't handle it. He is putting his own self interest above what is best for the team. We play better football when Ronaldo isn't playing up top to slow down everything.

Such a manchild! He could have addressed these issues in private. He just wants to be the centre if attention.

This. He always craved attention like the egotistical narcissist that he is. And for many years, he was getting that attention on the pitch. But now that he isn't playing regularly and when he does play occasionally, he is rubbish, he needs to get his attention off the pitch. He is such a egomaniac. i can't stand him. I am glad that unlike most Man United fans, I have never really sucked up to Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Man Utd forward says he turned down £305m Saudi Arabia move

Cristiano Ronaldo says he turned down a £305m deal to join a Saudi Arabian club in the summer - a move that would have seen him become the highest-paid footballer in the world.

In an interview with TalkTV, Ronaldo said he chose to stay at Manchester United because he was "happy here".

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Al-Hilal had offered the Portugal forward a two-year deal.

"It's true, yes it's true," said Ronaldo when asked about the rumours.

"But what the press keep saying, the garbage that nobody wants me, which is completely wrong.

"And I was happy here to be honest, I was motivated to do a great season here. But they [the media] continue to repeat that nobody wants Cristiano. How do they not want a player who scored 32 goals last year, with a national team?"

On turning down the money, Ronaldo told host Piers Morgan: "It's hard, it's hard. But in the same way, I thought that I was very happy here; that I still capable to score goals.

"I still believe that I can score many, many goals and help the team because I still believe that I'm still good and capable to help the national team - even Manchester United. But if you don't feel around you that the energy's on your side, it's difficult.

"Of course, the criticism is going to exist all the time, 'ah he's 37, he's not the same'. But I want to see if some guys of my age can maintain the level that I show. Yes, in this moment, I feel very, very good. I believe that I'm going to do an amazing World Cup and I'm prepared, physically and mentally."

Ronaldo has made headlines this week following his interview with Morgan, in which he said he felt "betrayed" by United, had "no respect" for manager Erik ten Hag and is being forced out of the club.

In the section broadcast on Thursday, Ronaldo went into more detail about his "betrayal", admitting he did not regret refusing to come on as a substitute for the final few minutes in a win against Tottenham at Old Trafford, as he felt Ten Hag had "provoked" him.

His former team-mate at Old Trafford, Gary Neville, says United "know they have to terminate" Ronaldo's contract following the interview, but the striker has no plans to stop playing.

"I want to play two years more, three years more," said Ronaldo. "So two or three years maximum. I want to finish with 40. I think 40 will be a good age.

"But I don't know, I don't know the future. Sometimes you plan one thing for your life and as I told many times, the life is dynamic. And you never know what's going to happen."

'There can really only be one outcome' - analysis

Well, now everyone knows the full extent of Cristiano Ronaldo's explosive interview, Manchester United have to decide what they do about it.

External legal opinion has already been expressed that Ronaldo is in breach of contract by conducting an interview like this. He didn't tell the club he was doing it and whilst the second half offered some contrition for his behaviour, it merely added fuel to the fire he lit under his relationship with his manager, Erik ten Hag.

The idea Ronaldo's relationship with Ten Hag can be repaired and trust established is fanciful. And the reception he would get from the fans he professes to still have close to his heart, if he returned to play in front of them before the end of the year, would be somewhat frosty.

United are still to make an official statement beyond saying they need to get to the bottom of what Ronaldo has done. They have, however, privately let it be known they feel the club is moving under the right direction under Ten Hag and they retain pride in the staff Ronaldo publicly ridiculed.

There can really only be one outcome, something that seemed certain to happen when Ronaldo stormed out of Old Trafford during that fateful Tottenham game. Many were surprised he returned to the club after that. It may be some time before he is back again.

Manchester United has this morning initiated appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview.

We will not be making further comment until this process reaches its conclusion

I am hearing reports that the egomaniac is expected to be sacked. Hopefully the sooner the better.

The majority of football fans (mostly Man U) and pundits actually agree with most of the things CR7 has said, moreover enjoy these sort of explosive interviews as the interview not only removes doubt but provides insight. No different to a biography post retirement.

For those who say he shouldn’t have expressed his views this way, please do grow up - you love this, we all do, it adds to the drama, so save the high moral ground here!

Old Trafford top brass have made it clear to Ronaldo’s advisers they do not want him at the club beyond the World Cup.

Ronaldo staged a 90 minute sit-down interview with TalkTV’s Piers Morgan in which he savaged the Old Trafford club, manager Erik ten Hag and the Glazer family owners.

Their relationship now looks irreparable, with clips of the interview emerging hours after United secured a morale-boosting 2-1 Premier League win over Fulham last weekend.

The full interview was aired on Tuesday and Wednesday as a further series of startling revelations were made.

United released a statement on Friday confirming they were ready to take action against one of their greatest ever players.

It read: “Manchester United has this morning initiated appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview.

“We will not be making further comment until this process reaches its conclusion.”

Speaking as the statement was released, Piers Morgan told talkSPORT: “I think it’s highly unlikely Ronaldo will go back to Man United – they’re heading for a divorce.”

And it now seems United want to get rid of Ronaldo as soon as they can, as they look into ripping up his contract.

United fans are some of the most hypocritical and mentally inept fans ever, they wanted someone to talk about the things happening at the club and now that person has, they turn on them and advocate sacking arguably the best ever to do it. This infatuation with Hag will not last long, their fans are going on like he has won the EPL and Champions League for them.

It’s easy to criticise CR7’s on field performance to when he has barely played and had to deal with personal tragedy, it really is very easy to call someone past it in these circumstances.

Great players require management not mistreatment, there is so much for CR7 to offer the club but this is how it will end.

Ronaldo accused United of betraying him and trying to force him out of the club in an interview with TalkTV broadcaster Piers Morgan.

United have not put a time frame on the process but it is thought they want Ronaldo's exit done "cleanly and quickly" and in as dignified a way as possible, Sky Sports News reports.

In the 90-minute interview, Ronaldo said he has no respect for manager Erik ten Hag.

He told Morgan: "I don't have respect for him because he doesn't show respect for me. If you don't have respect for me, I'm never gonna have respect for you."

The 37-year-old also said he felt "provoked" by the United manager.

Cristiano Ronaldo risks tarnishing his illustrious legacy with a sour end after Manchester United interview

The Portugal captain, widely considered to be one of the greatest players of all time, also said the Glazer family, who have owned United since 2005, do not have the club's best interests at heart.

"The Glazers, they don't care about the club. I mean, professional sport, as you know, Manchester is a marketing club," he said.

He alleged two senior figures at Old Trafford treated him with suspicion when he said his daughter Bella was sick with bronchitis, three months after her twin brother died.

"I spoke with the director and the president of Man United and they kind of didn't believe that something was going wrong, which made me feel bad," Ronaldo said.

"I am never, ever going to change the health of my family for a football. Never. Now or 10 years behind or forward and it is something that really hurt me because they doubt my words."

Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, also claimed there has been "zero progress" at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Since he rejoined the club last summer, the forward has had a turbulent time and has struggled to get playing time this season.

He was left on the substitute's bench despite his side being 4-0 down against Manchester City, and in a match against Tottenham he refused to come onto the pitch as a substitute and stormed down the tunnel before full-time.

Frosty reception for Ronaldo

Since the interview, a video from the dressing room of the Portuguese national side appears to show a frosty reception for Ronaldo when the players met before the World Cup.

Ronaldo's Man Utd teammate Bruno Fernandes does not initially move to shake hands or embrace him as he walks into the dressing room and opts instead to briefly touch his arm.

Ronaldo initially offers his hand, which Fernandes quickly shakes while making fleeting eye contact.

Fernandes then says a few short words before turning away, leaving the striker unsmiling.

There is a video of Piers Morgan being interviewed by TalkSport post CR7 interview.

Watch it. The hosts make no complaints on why CR7 exposed all and let his feelings known, but more so in the way the interview was conducted (non provoking questions), and who will be the next person Piers will interview.

Manchester United are exploring ways to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract at the club following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

"Sorry, I am not that kind of player," says Cristiano Ronaldo at one point during his interview with Piers Morgan. He says it with pride and his admirers will point to it as evidence of his elite mentality. But it cuts to the crux of his inability to adapt to his new reality.

They say that most players are the first to know when their time is up. Ronaldo, as has so often been the case throughout his extraordinary career, is not most players. His curse is that the mentality that drove him to the top of his sport is the same mentality that is making his descent much uglier than it needs to be.

If anyone expected this explosive but ultimately excruciating interview to include revelations about Erik ten Hag's shocking treatment of a 37-year-old man in the workplace then they would surely have been disappointed as they waited in vain for evidence.

The coach charged with setting Manchester United on a new path did not degrade or bully Ronaldo. He named him as captain in what may now prove to be his final appearance for the club. Ten Hag's crime was to have, on occasion, not picked Ronaldo in his team.

That is the incendiary act that led him to refuse to come off the bench against Tottenham. Ronaldo has apologised to his team-mates for that. Sort of. "I apologised, but in the same way, I am not regretting the decision to not come on." Sorry, not sorry.

"The coach didn't have respect for me," he adds.

Ronaldo was not fully fit at the start of the season. Even he seems to accept that he could not stroll into the side then. He played in the 4-0 beating at Brentford, was left out of the next four that United won, only to return for the home defeat to Real Sociedad.

The Tottenham game for which he was benched preceded two games inside a week that Ronaldo had started. Ninety minutes in the narrow win over Omonia Nicosia at Old Trafford. Seventy-two more minutes in the stadium in the stalemate with Newcastle United.

It is worth remembering because this is not the story of a player who had been frozen out approaching his 38th birthday. His most recent appearance, that awful 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa, was his ninth start in 13 games. Ten Hag might have played him too much.

None of which is to say Ronaldo is of no use to Manchester United. His goal against Everton showed what he can still do. He can contribute. That explains why Ten Hag has tried to accommodate him. The player has been indulged more than he appears to accept.

"I do not want to be cocky and say that I am the same as when I was 20. Of course, not," says Ronaldo. He goes on to suggest that retirement at the age of 40 is the plan. It is the closest he comes to an acknowledgement that time is an opponent he cannot beat.

"But I adapt and I am smart to know my strength, what I am good at. And I am still playing at a high level. I score goals and I will continue to score goals - if my mind is clear and happy and if the people surrounding me, they are helping me to be a successful player."

He is right in that it is still possible to construct a team around Ronaldo that maximises his output. Maybe Manchester United are not doing that. The problem is that as his abilities decline and the end nears, there is less reason than ever for Ten Hag to do so.

Ronaldo now looks to his time at Real Madrid as the benchmark for how he would like to be treated, but does not appear to have made the connection that he was treated that way because he was at his peak. That would not have gone on indefinitely.

He was named as a substitute eight times during his nine seasons in La Liga - as many times as Ten Hag has asked him to perform that duty already at Manchester United. During Ronaldo's last five La Liga seasons as a Real Madrid player, he was not on the bench once.

No wonder this is all so alien to him. "Do not tell me that the top players, the guys who want everything, the key players, will play three minutes," he says of the request for him to come on late in the game during that defeat of Tottenham. "Come on, this is unacceptable."

Perhaps he is right. United supporters have seen Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes accept their place back within the ranks but Ronaldo is different. Maybe it is for the best that Eric Cantona never had to adjust. He was the main man from his first day there until his last.

That tends to be the way of it with the true greats. Pele went to the States. Johan Cruyff stormed to Feyenoord when he sensed Ajax were not bending to his will. Diego Maradona consumed clubs. Lionel Messi's move to Paris Saint-Germain is not without its tensions.

There is no real precedent for this in the Premier League, no clue what it might look like when an all-time icon of the game is asked to accept a diminished role before he is ready. Maybe this unedifying spectacle is precisely what such a situation looks like.

For United, it means more awkward headlines at a time when they might have hoped the worst was behind them. Alejandro Garnacho's big moment swallowed up. The spotlight instead put back on the years of failure that have led them to this mess.

Ronaldo has a point when questioning Ralf Rangnick's appointment and his claim that United no longer lead the way in infrastructure is undeniable even as they begin to correct that failing. Supporters will welcome that perceived criticism of the owners.

But as he whines, unchallenged by the sycophantic Morgan, the sense is of a man able to diagnose every problem but one.

Maybe there was another world in which Ronaldo might have embraced his role in changing the culture, becoming a beacon of the better times while striving to restore them. Maybe Ten Hag could have counted on his senior player to set those standards.

But that would have required more than just unchecked ambition and drive, it would have demanded some humility and self-awareness. The message that Ronaldo has sent to his manager and the rest of the world is clear. Sorry, I am not that kind of player.

Maybe that's because you don't live in Manchester, I see you are based in London. Local fans rarely turn on former heroes in a hurry.

If you support Ronaldo over Man United, then you aren't a Man United fan. No player is bigger than the club, certainly not someone who used Man United as a stepping stone to go to Real Madrid.

By the time a fifth question on Cristiano Ronaldo had been put to Bernardo Silva, it was clear the Manchester City midfielder’s patience was beginning to wear thin and he had said all he was going to say on the matter.

Bernardo had done his best to insist the Ronaldo circus was not going to overshadow Portugal’s preparations for the World Cup, and their opening match against Ghana on Thursday, that there was “no strange atmosphere” between the striker and his Manchester United team-mate Bruno Fernandes and that he didn’t see a “big issue” here.

But the unfortunate reality is that the Selecao have been caught in the crosshairs of their captain’s personal war with United, and the *****ing of a planetary sized ego, and the repercussions are a very public sideshow Fernando Santos and his squad would gladly do without.

United, for their part, do not want the soap opera to become any more of a distraction than it needs to be as they seek a quick and clean solution to the mess, even if they have appointed lawyers and all roads will lead to him being kicked out of the club in one form or another.

Yet you only needed to witness the rather frenetic scenes on Saturday afternoon, when hundreds of media from around the world descended on the Al Shahaniya Sports Club where Portugal are training, to appreciate this is not a situation where people are going to look the other way.

This was Ronaldo’s first public appearance since his incendiary interview with Piers Morgan aired and he effectively turned Old Trafford defector. And it was telling that there were almost as many reporters, photographers and cameramen locked outside the training ground, along with a posse of young Ronaldo supporters, as the 200 or so bodies who swamped the stands adjacent to the pitch where United’s renegade centre-forward was training.

It is a 30-kilometre car ride from downtown Doha to sleepy Al Shananiya, past the huge fortress housing Qatar’s Amiri Guard and the nearby camel racing track, and it seems certain to become a well trodden path at this tournament.

With another five days before Portugal face Ghana, their communications team have warned that even journalists who have requests to attend media events going forward risk being turned away on the door such is the interest in Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has been carrying on like nothing has happened, plugging his many sponsors on social media from Live Score and Binance to Therabody and zujuGP and revelling in his new Madame Tussauds’ waxwork in New York’s Times Square.

Despite his lack of goals and playing minutes and poor form for United and the fact he missed Portugal’s 4-0 friendly win over Nigeria on Thursday with a stomach complaint, the five-time World Player of the Year is expected to start against Ghana and looked untroubled in training. The interesting one, though, will be Uruguay.

Santos and his staff may still rate Ronaldo as the best they have in the box but that is not the case outside it and, given the way Uruguay play, it is thought some consideration may be given to dropping the captain for that match depending on how things go against Ghana.

Bernardo brushed off a question when asked if it would be Ronaldo plus another 10 against the Ghanaians and said Portugal were a “very strong generation” who “know how to respond” in those instances when their captain is not there.

Wayne Rooney has suggested his 37-year-old former United team-mate is struggling to accept the fact he is no longer the force he was although those close to Ronaldo say the events of recent weeks and months have only made him more determined to star in Qatar.

Indeed, should he succeed in rolling back the years, he would not be the first superstar to come into the World Cup on the back of a troubled season and thrive.

From the Brazilian Ronaldo in 2002 and Francesco Totti with Italy four years later to Spain’s Andres Iniesta in 2010, Bastian Schweinsteiger, of Germany, in 2014 and France’s Paul Pogba in Russia four years ago, the past five tournaments have been littered with tales of players who overcame an array of problems to inspire their countries to glory.

Can Ronaldo do likewise with Portugal? Whatever materialises, the spotlight seems certain to remain intense.

Cristiano Ronaldo believes his TV interview in which the Manchester United forward said he had been betrayed by the club and was being forced out had not been a distraction in the Portugal changing room at the World Cup.

"In my life, the best timing is always my timing," Ronaldo told a news conference earlier today.

"I don't have to think about what other people think. I speak when I want. The players know me really well for many years and know the type of person I am.

"It’s an ambitious group that is hungry and focused. So I'm sure it (the interview) won’t shake the changing room’s concentration and focus."

After missing Thursday's friendly against Nigeria in Lisbon due to a stomach problem, Ronaldo has been training as usual with team mates since arriving in Qatar on Friday and he said he feels in shape.

"I’m feeling great, I’m recovered and I’m training well and ready to start the World Cup in the best way possible," Ronaldo said.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he will "speak when he wants" and his row with Manchester United will not "shake" his Portugal team at the World Cup.

United are exploring their legal options as they look to end Ronaldo's time at the club following his critical interview with TalkTV.

Ronaldo, 37, said he felt "betrayed by the club" and stated he had "no respect" for manager Erik ten Hag.

"In my life, the best timing is always my timing," Ronaldo said on Monday.

Making a surprise appearance at a news conference, the Portugal captain said: "I don't have to think about what other people think. I speak when I want. The players know me really well for many years and know the type of person I am.

"It's an ambitious group that is hungry and focused. So I'm sure it [the interview] won't shake the changing room's concentration and focus."

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo will lead Portugal into their opening Group H game against Ghana on Thursday.

He has just over seven months remaining on his £500,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford but United could terminate the forward's contract, which would leave him free to sign for another club when the transfer window opens in January.

He has not played because of an unspecified illness since he captained United in their 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa on 6 November, but he says he feels in shape for what will be his fifth World Cup.

"I'm feeling great, I'm recovered and I'm training well and ready to start the World Cup in the best way possible," said Ronaldo.

"I feel that this Portugal squad has amazing potential. I think we can win for sure, but we need to focus on the next game. So, it's focusing in Ghana, get a win and go from there.

"We will see in the end who the best team is, but I believe Portugal is the best team in this World Cup. But we need to show it on the pitch."

Has burned all of his bridges now I think.

Not sure which club can afford Cronaldo’s wages after United release him.

Cristiano Ronaldo statement:

“Following talks with Manchester United, we’ve mutually agreed to end our contract.

I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change.

It feels like the right time to seek a new challenge.

I wish Man Utd all the best”.

There's a small chance that Portugal go on to win the WC, he retires from all forms of football.

Good riddance. He is finished as a top level player and soon his arrogant self will realise that. I am just glad that we got the arrogant manchild out of the club. Now we can focus on bringing a striker in January.

He should humble himself, take a massive pay cut, go back to Sporting Lisbon and end his career there. But, he is too arrogant to accept that he is done as a top level footballer.

Former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been banned for two domestic matches for knocking a phone out of an Everton fan's hand.

The 37-year-old appeared to hit the phone as he went down to the tunnel after defeat at Goodison Park in April.

Ronaldo, who left United by mutual consent on Tuesday after criticising manager Erik ten Hag, was also fined £50,000 by the Football Association.

The suspension will not affect his World Cup involvement.

He is set to captain Portugal in their opening Group H game against Ghana on Thursday.

Ronaldo will serve the two-game ban at domestic level with any new club - in England or abroad - although it does not apply at continental club level, such as the Champions League.

An independent FA hearing found him guilty of improper and violent conduct.

He was cautioned by police in August and apologised to the young fan immediately after the incident.

Ronaldo admitted the improper conduct charge but not violent conduct, the FA said.

The end of his second spell at Old Trafford followed a controversial interview in which he criticised United and said he had "no respect" for Ten Hag.

‘Don’t use my name to attack Cristiano’ – Bruno Fernandes denies digging out Cristiano Ronaldo following ‘we used to be individuals’ comments after Manchester United’s heroic victory over rivals Man City

Fernandes spoke to the media after the match and attracted attention when saying: “[We] used to be individuals, now we are a team. You can see a proper team that works for each other.”

Some suggested that the Portuguese stars comments were a dig at his international teammate Ronaldo who left the club by mutual consent last year following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Writing on his Instagram story, Fernandes said: “I know that is difficult to see Manchester United doing well, [but I] don’t have anything to [say] about us on the news apart [from] good things!

“Don’t use my name to attack Cristiano.

“Cristiano was part of our team for half the season and as I said in many interviews, everyone since Liverpool is being amazing and acting like a proper team and you can see the results. We carry on!'”
