Recently, someone close to me needed blood for her surgery. The blood was arranged but it cost alot of money.

My question is, when a person donates his blood to the blood banks, he does it for free and doesnt get a penny, when that blood is bought, the hospital charges a hefty amount per bag. Thus, do hospitals make financial profits from blood donations?

This is their reasoning.

The cost charged to a patient is not for the unit of blood but to cover the process of collecting, processing and testing the blood to ensure that we supply safe blood to the patient.

BUT, a few private hospitals have been known to overcharge and that's a real scam on their part. It's not a widespread issue but certain hospitals really are pathetic.
