Granted England were thrashed 4-0 in 5 test series in 2016, nonetheless some people would claim them to among the better test nations in the world.

Did they deserve to play 5 tests in 2021?

5 test matches are way too many, it takes lot of toll on body. BCCI should’ve never agreed to 5 test matches to begin with. 4 test matches are ideal along with 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is.

I prefer and wish for India to play series of 5 tests with ENG and AUS, 4 tests with SA and NZ regardless of results. These are usually high quality games.

Series with 5 tests is quickly becoming thing of the past now. Other than Ashes I dont see that happening anymore.

No team deserves to play 5 tests in India. At the same time, India don't deserve to play 5 tests in England.

I think the series was going to be a 5 test match series but they wanted to get ODIs and T20s in, also due to the pandemic they cut a test.

Only Ashes should have five Tests. It's an overkill for any other teams even if it's Ind Vs Aus of England.

Great job BCCI. I hope you never schedule a 5-match series in the future.

I'm all for 5 Test matches in a series. Cut down on cartoon T20 matches instead.

We're playing like 5 T20s on the same ground. What a joke.

Bit rich coming from an IPL fan. Playing 2 IPL's within 6-7 months is not an overkill but playing a 5 match test series instead of 4 is? Lol :inti

Who said they downgraded? It was always meant to be 4 tests in India. On the tour to England in August, we will play 5 tests as there are no LOIs.

Good job BCCI.
They downgraded and added additional LOI's to compensate the cancelled LOI series IND vs ENG.

I actually enjoy T20 internationals a year so before the World T20. As teams play their strongest team. The T20s when a World T20 is far away aren't as enjoyable and can feel a bit pointless.

I think 4 tests are fine, given there will be only 2 venues for tests. I am happy that one of the will be D/N. But I am not a fan of 5 T20s. 3 would have been sufficient. Either that or cutdown on the ODIs, with the T20 world cup in a few months.

India doesn't deserve to waste time playing an additional test match against a team they are very, very likely to beat. It's a waste of the players' time, and a waste of money to schedule the 5th match.

Last time, India destroyed England in both the batting and bowling departments, meaning that they were by far the better team. Most of the team has remained the same since, and I see no reason to doubt the fact that India is a far superior team in home conditions than England if they were to tour India.

Players need maximum time to prepare for the T20 World Cup, which is clearly the priority in the year 2021. The BCCI knows this, and they are very clear in their planning as to what they want to invest in and what they do not need in the present time. Also, it would be in their best interests to make sure that all the players are well rested before such a tournament. The IPL happens right after this series, and it is a big priority as it will condition everyone for an environment which can almost equally reciprocate the feeling of a T20 World Cup.

To conclude, the decision is of no surprise. It makes perfect sense as to why they would do it, and at the end of the day, the BCCI knows the team's needs far greater than any outside spectator.

^ You are overestimating India and undermining the poms. They are a very good test side and can easily beat India in couple of tests. Last tour was different...it was in 2016 when Kohli was in beastly form and at the summit of his career. This time I fully expect England to give a tougher fight to an ageing Indian team.

I am missing 6 Test series ...:) Last played probably 1994 Ashes & 1995 Wisden Trophy.

Well logistics demanded that tests be reduced. It would be extremely difficult to organise 3 tests at the same venue. On top of that woty tge upcoming T20WC India needs T20Is to get the national team into the groove.

Ofcourse i would have wanted the 5 tests, but such is the scenario.

Incorrect. Look at the FTP. Both series were scheduled to be 5 test match series.

Agreed. Unless India are playing tests alone and play county practice before the series then it's no use playing 5 games like the ashes.

The only series I would want to see with 5 tests is AUS-ENG and IND-PAK.

There has to be some history there to make it entertaining.

India would have won the series in England if it weren't for the tosses. Yes tosses. Yes tosses matter in Sena. Yes record says so. Yes India also weren't full strength

There you go my dear Pakistanis. not you rajdeep.

If Englind lose tosses in India it's over. Hell even in England it's over vs India.
However even if they win tosses it's over in India. India is ageing but the youngsters coming up will deal with England's bowling comfortably in Asia.

Have a very good feeling that we will make Archer and wood quit mid way through the series due to sheer exhaustion.

You're in luck. Current world test championship about to make a record for the longest running tournament lasting about 3 years.

1997 Ashes, or it can be argued the 1997-98 Wisden Trophy in the Caribbean (where they had to add an extra test after the first was abandoned)
