What's new

Dockrell to make a debut this summer?

All of their spinning options seem very average, but I'm sure one of those from the list above will feature in the tests ahead sooner rather than later.

I wonder how they manage to average in the low-20s in county cricket? Are their batsmen that bad, or are the spinners just cleaning up the tail or something like that?

Where is Monty?

Got dropped by Essex for poor discipline about a month back.

England should try and develop someone new. Not Ali though because he's a batsman who bowls a bit.

No Irish contracted players can be picked by the ECB until after the WC at the earliest. Some gentlemans agreement or something

He isnt good enough for England though IMO. He's great potential but he's very predictable at times.

If he does go to England then I'll probably just give up on this sport. Not fair to lose your best players all the while the ICC does nothing. If Morgan/Rankin were back with us then honestly we'd be as good as WI IMO

Should be Monty or Tredwell, both have troubled this very Indian batting lineup in Indian conditions they can only do a better job in the conditions they're accustomed to. Forget the county form, should be horses for courses selection.

I would give Kerrigan another chance - but only under another captain. Cook has already shown he isn't willing to show faith in his spinners.

Dockrell looks more a limited overs man to me.

Some grounds take spin - notably the Oval (Batty), Cardiff (Cosker), Northampton (no one currently but previously Swann and Panesar) and Old Trafford.

The last two tests of this series are at Old Trafford and The Oval then. Hope Jadeja and a corresponding English spinner can spice things up, much different to the yawnfest we're watching at the moment.

Treadmill has lost his place in the Kent side to Adam Riley, and has been loaned out to Sussex, much to the dismay of the Sussex fans I know. He is not a Test-class bowler in any case.

Much as I was his biggest fan, Monty's international career is over unless he can sort his life out.

England doesn't want to give Ireland test status because they will never get good players. Dockrell must stay with Ireland. And Ireland should have got test status by now

Also, Eoin Morgan & Rankin should be allowed back to play for Ireland

Morgan will never go back to Ireland in a million years. He's one of the best LOI batsman around and depressingly good for a minnow like Ireland. Absurd suggestion.

Good. I dont want to see him near a green jersey again considering some of his comments last September.

Also the standard of team has nothing to do with it. By your logic all good Associate players should jump ship at the first chance they get

If they desire to play for a much better and bigger team, they should and once they do and have success, why would they want to go back?

What did Morgan say?

Said its a shame Stirling has to wait to play for England and pretty much did nothing but act condescending to the country of his birth. He said this while in Ireland for the England ODI. Dont want him near the side again and good riddance I say. Wilson is just as good a player and arguably in better form too.

I will be honest here. I kinda feel for Ireland when there good players get taken by England. It kinda feels like stealing and it does not help a team like Ireland grow. You are basically destroying a team that could be added to world cricket as a test nation. England have plenty of options in there domestic. They should just grow there own cricketers for once.

Dockrell..? That slow bowler who bowls slower than old time yuvi...? Poor ireland....!!

I totally agree. I was over in Malahide last year when England narrowly beat Ireland in a 50 over game only due to being rescued by an Eoin Morgan ton with Boyd Rankin returning the best England bowling figures! A very hollow victory indeed. Downright embarrassing in fact if the truth be told.

I've been over there a couple of times for ODIs. I've seen and met first hand some of the enthusiastic and knowledgeable fan base, and I was hugely impressed by how well organised everything was, especially the game at Malahide, which was watched by over 10,000.

I'm all for players from associate countries getting the chance to play Test cricket, but I think in the case of Irish players, that chance should now be with Ireland sooner rather than later.

Considering Ireland performance against Dutch I don't think they are ready to play Test Cricket but they will get a shot

good to know if such agreement has been made. Its just soo anoying to see many Irish players go and play for England after which they can't live up to there performance and end up being discarded and wait for their time period to complete before they could play for Ireland again.

George Dockrell : The new Steven Smith?

He started his career as a left-arm slow bowler who would bat at no 10 or 11 and his bowling was really neat and impressed a lot of people. At one point, he was even seen as a replacement for Graeme Swann for England but now his bowling has severely deteriorated but his batting has been top-notch. He has been averaging 106 in List A cricket ever since the Irish domestic competition got FC status.

Surely the new Steven Smith he is?

Probably more like a new Daniel Vettori.

Many cases of bowlers developing their batting later on in their career, but to become a S Smith, a top tier bat in world rankings, is very difficult.

Doubt that we will see another like S Smith soon with that transformation and awkward batting style.

Maybe he can be a good batsmen. But not every failed spinner turned good batter is going to be as good as Steve Smith or be dubbed the new Steve Smith.
