Donald Trump and his wife Melania have tested positive for coronavirus.

In a tweet, the president said: "Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"

Mr Trump earlier said he and the first lady were self-isolating after Hope Hicks, one of his top aide's, tested positive.

To get out of the debates and gain sympathy.

US President Donald Trump has said he and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for coronavirus and are now in quarantine.

The president, aged 74 and therefore in a high-risk group, announced the news in a tweet. "We will get through this together," he wrote.

It comes after one of his closest aides tested positive for coronavirus.

Hope Hicks, the 31-year-old adviser to the president, was the closest aide to Mr Trump to test positive so far.

She travelled with him on Air Force One to the first presidential TV debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden in Ohio on Tuesday. Some of Mr Trump's family members who attended the debate were seen not wearing masks.

Mr Trump has mostly spurned mask-wearing and has often been pictured not socially distanced with aides or others during official engagements.

Mr Trump's physician Sean Conley released a statement, saying the president and the first lady "are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence".

"Rest assured I expect the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments," the statement said.

Earlier on Thursday, Mr Trump said he and his wife, who is 50, were going into quarantine after Ms Hicks's positive test.

He tweeted: "Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible!

"The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!"

It is not clear how Mr Trump's positive test will affect arrangements for the second presidential debate, which is scheduled for 15 October in Miami, Florida.

'An earth-shaking development'
A week after Donald Trump told Americans not to worry about Covid-19 because "it affects virtually nobody" except the elderly and those with heart conditions, the president himself has tested positive for the virus.

It is difficult to overstate exactly how earth-shaking a development this is, just 32 days before the US elections.

The president will have to quarantine for treatment. Campaign rallies are off. The next presidential debate, in two weeks, is in question.

The recurring message from the president, that the nation is "rounding the turn" in its handling of the virus, has been undermined by his own illness.

Just two days ago, during the first debate, Trump belittled Democratic opponent Joe Biden for frequently wearing masks and not having campaign rallies that matched his own in size.

Now, the White House and the campaign will have to answer why the president took such a seemingly cavalier attitude toward protecting himself - and how many others in the White House and the higher echelons of the US government may have been exposed.

During times of national turmoil, the American public tends to rally in support of the president. It may not be enough to insulate him from the questions that follow, however.

What about Hope Hicks?
According to Bloomberg News, Ms Hicks is experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, and was quarantined on Air Force One on the trip back from Minnesota.

A White House official quoted by The Hill political news outlet said that contact tracing had been carried out "and the appropriate notifications and recommendations have been made".

During a phone call with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday night, Mr Trump said he and Mrs Trump "spend a lot of time with Hope".

Ms Hicks was a campaign spokeswoman during Mr Trump's candidacy before becoming communications director in his White House.

She stepped down in March 2018 to become chief communications officer at Rupert Murdoch's Fox, before returning to the White House in February.

Have there been other cases at the White House?
In May, Vice-President Mike Pence's press secretary Katie Miller tested positive and later recovered.

That same month, a member of the US Navy who was serving as one of Mr Trump's personal valets tested positive.

But the White House said at the time that neither the president nor vice-president were affected.

National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien, a number of Secret Service agents, a Marine One pilot and a White House cafeteria worker have also tested positive.

The coronavirus has infected more than 7.2 million Americans, killing more than 200,000 of them.

The White House tests aides and anyone else who comes into contact with the president daily.

Pence: We join millions praying for their recovery

Here's a tweet Vice-President Mike Pence sent following the confirmation that President Trump and First Lady Melania had tested positive for Covid-19:

Quote Message: Karen and I send our love and prayers to our dear friends President [Trump] and [First Lady] Melania Trump. We join millions across America praying for their full and swift recovery. God bless you President Trump & our wonderful First Lady Melania.

President and first lady both well, official doctor says

The White House official doctor Sean Conley has released a statement on the president and first lady's positive results.

"This evening I received confirmation that both President Trump and First Lady Melanie have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus," he said, referring to the scientific name for the virus that causes Covid-19.

"The President and the First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.

"The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country's greatest medical professionals and institutions. Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments."

What does the president's overall health tell us?

President Trump is at higher risk of serious complications from COVID-19 because of his age and physical condition.

The US leader is 74 and, according to the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this makes him five times more likely to need hospital treatment than someone aged 18 to 29.

The 65 to 74 age range is also 90 times more likely to die.

Health records for the president released earlier this year show he is 6ft 3ins and weighs 17st 6lbs. This gives him a Body Mass Index of 30.5 meaning he is categorised as obese.

He practically won his presidency because of the debates and rallies..

It was a large factor in building his base, yes.

But floating voters who took a punt on him because they didn’t like Clinton have been put off by his unPresidential antics. This could be his final attempt to win their sympathy.

I agree with Robert and will continue to do so until he’s on a ventilator which case I’ll accept he’s seriously ill.

By the way he lost the popular vote in 2016 and we’ll see if those that took a punt on him will still back him.

Wow!

Trump was quite careless about the virus. Not surprised that he got it.

Since he is an old man, I wonder what this virus will do to him. We have to wait and see.

Is it just a coincidence that the world's two most influential leaders have both now contracted Covid? As someone who naturally gravitates towards conspiracy theories ( must be in the genes) I find that somewhat suspicious. Is it some sort of PR stunt?

Not sure about Trump but Boris was on a ventilator in the ICU.

Putin doesn’t have COVID. Nor Merkel. Nor Xi Jinping.

Convenient timing.

Expect him to come out and say he has “the best immune system ever, I didn’t even notice it.”

What risk does Covid-19 pose to Trump's health?

Donald Trump has clear risk factors - including his age, weight and being male - that all raise the chances of a severe coronavirus infection. He is 74 and has a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30, which is the clinical definition of obesity.

Age is a clear and strong link to developing a severe infection, leading to hospital treatment and in some cases death.

"But most people who get an infection also get better," Dr Bharat Pankhania, from the University of Exeter medical school, told the BBC.

An early analysis of more than 100 studies, taking in data from around the world, showed the risk for children and young adults was tiny. But at age 75, it is estimated that one-in-25 people who catch coronavirus die.

A similar pattern has been seen by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It says eight-out-of-10 Covid deaths in the country have been in the over-65s. And people in Trump's age group are five times more likely to need hospital care and 90 times more likely to die than somebody in their 20s.

UK PM Johnson's battle with COVID-19 may be a warning for Trump

LONDON (Reuters) - When Boris Johnson caught COVID-19 in March, the overweight British prime minister tried to work through the illness “in denial” - but ended up wearing an oxygen mask in an intensive care unit and was ultimately out of action for almost a month.

He later said he had fought for his life as the state prepared for the unthinkable: the possible death in office of a prime minister.

Johnson’s experience of trying to stay in charge while struggling with the disease may offer clues about the potential dangers ahead for U.S. President Donald Trump, now that he has tested positive.

After being accused of initially failing to appreciate the gravity of coronavirus crisis for Britain, Johnson, then 55, felt mild symptoms on March 26 while answering questions in the House of Commons chamber.

A few hours later, he received a positive test result, and the next day he made a video statement in which he said he was self-isolating, but would continue to work and lead Britain’s coronavirus response.

But during the next nine days, as he worked in isolation in an apartment above his official Downing Street residence and office, his condition deteriorated, with persistent symptoms including a high temperature.

Later, he said he had been in denial and continued to work despite feeling groggy and “pretty rough”, until doctors told him firmly to go to hospital.

Being a national leader has offered little protection against the new coronavirus.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro spent weeks in quarantine after testing positive in July 7, and said he had taken antibiotics for an infection that left him feeling weak.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez needed hospital treatment, and former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi developed double pneumonia and spent 10 days in hospital, being treated with the antiviral drug Remdesivir.

The 84-year-old was allowed home on Sept. 14 saying he had survived “the most dangerous challenge” of his life, and has made no public appearances since.

“THE BAD MOMENT”

Johnson’s sudden deterioration after continuing to work may hold a warning for the 74-year-old Trump, now in full campaigning mode for the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 3.

Johnson was admitted to St Thomas’ Hospital in the evening of April 5. The next day he was moved to intensive care, where he received oxygen support but was not put on a ventilator.

“The bad moment came when it was 50-50 whether they were going to have to put a tube down my windpipe,” Johnson said later.

“The doctors had all sorts of arrangements for what to do if things went badly wrong ... The bloody indicators kept going in the wrong direction.”

He later said he owed those doctors his life.

While Johnson was ill, his duties were assumed by Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.

“They had a strategy to deal with a ‘death of Stalin’-type scenario,” Johnson later said. “It was a tough old moment, I won’t deny it.”

Johnson left hospital on April 12, but continued his recuperation at his official country residence northwest of London, and did not return to work until April 27 - a month after announcing that he had tested positive.

When Johnson’s fiancée Carrie Symonds gave birth to their son two days later, he was given a middle name of Nicholas partly in tribute to two of the intensive care doctors who had treated the prime minister.

Since then, Johnson has repeatedly dismissed concerns about his recovery, and said the virus has convinced him to slim down from his previous, portly 17st 6lb (244 lb, 112 kg).

As recently as Tuesday, he told a reporter: “I’m fitter than I was before, it may irritate you to know ... I’m fit as a butcher’s dog, thanks basically to losing weight.”

Spot on. Trump Covid play is akin to Boris' stint - sympathy and power vote. The looney left believe Trump is faking it so he can pull out out with a credible excuse, only there are 2 more debates, well past the week.

Trump is playing the game. Kudos to him. 'Get well soon' and all all that malarky.

He practically won his presidency because of the debates and rallies..

Trump's recent rally in Florida proves the strength of Trump's gravity. The place was rammed with supporters, and Trump was spot on in the 1st debate, Democrats let alone Biden couldn't even dream of mustering such a crowd.

By the same token, anyone supporting Trump is a racist, bigot, and supporter of white supremacy, but we all know that isn't true, some genuinely hoped to see change and hoped he will be the President of the US but all they got a reality TV star who is a street wh ore for ratings.

What about the rest of it, by the same token, anyone supporting Trump, supports bigotry, racism, and white superamcy, do you?

LOL, so you are getting it slowly.

So anyone who does not agree with a blind Trump supporter or pretending to be blind, is a "looney liberal fascist", seems that both you and Trump, intentionally or pretending to not understand the word "fascist'.

But, according to you, implying the same measure on Trump's supporter is just wrong.

remember, 'the nice people" comment, Let me guess you either wished he did not say it or you probably defended with, " He did not mean to say it"

So, I ask again, by the same token, anyone supporting Trump, supports bigotry, racism, and white supremacy, do you? and if you do not then how do you separate yourself every time when you drop on the feet to praise the Supremer Emperor who support and promote bigotry, racism, and white supremacy for personal gains?

My answer is the same, anyone who disagrees with the liberal view is deemed racist by the looney left.

And so what of Trump. You act as if his traits are new in American politics. How naive.

There is sod all you can do about the rising right. Squat.

:)

Never said that but none of us are actively either ignoring the question or trying to defend their bigoted Supreme Emporer, you are.

Rising right? the racist system is helping it to rise, if popular vote counted, as in true democracy then you will be in minority trying to fail to defend your Supreme Emperor.

The US isn't like India, where the majority is voting for their Supreme Emperor.

So what if I defend 'bigotry' in your view? What are you going to do about it? Sweet FA.

Trump is the reason you lefties have an opposition voice. You owe your existence to him for your daily plights. Hail to your King.

I do not know much about American politics but for the outside world, Trump seems to be a far better option then Biden. Hope he recovers soon.

A dicey situation for him, He is in at least three of the highest risk groups due to his age, obesity, and low income.

He wont be a loss to the planet if he kicks the bucket but his death would cause more restrictions, so hope he survives.

I don't think so as Biden said he tested negative jsut now

I think Trump is lying, looking for sympathy as poll numbers are going down.

Dont think it will happen but if Trump dies, will this mean the election is suspended or will his running mate take his place? Imagine he dies, the Republicans will surely win again and possibly by a good margin.

Even if he’s sick then Pence takes over in the running...
not sure what’s scarier

US President Donald Trump has mild symptoms of Covid-19 after he and his wife Melania tested positive for the coronavirus, the White House says.

Mr Trump's chief of staff said the president was "on the job" and "in good spirits", adding that he expected him to make a quick recovery.

The news comes just over a month before presidential elections, where he will face Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

Mr Biden himself and his wife Jill tested negative on Friday.

"I hope this serves as a reminder," he tweeted after the result. "Wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands."

The pair stood on stage together just days ago for a presidential debate.

Mr Biden's staff said he would travel to Michigan on Friday as planned for several campaign events. He and his wife have wished the presidential couple a speedy recovery.

Is Pence even human, looks like some Robot.

Pence would prob have a better chance than Trump as many Republicans dont like Trump and may change their vote this time.

Donald Trump's positive test result for coronavirus has immediately prompted speculation around his chances of suffering severe illness from the disease.

Based on his age and the results of his most recent physical tests, the 74-year-old president is considered to be at higher risk of serious complications from a virus that has now killed more than 200,000 people across the US.

According to statistics published by the US government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people in the 65 to 74 age bracket are five times more likely to need hospital treatment than an 18 to 29-year-old - and 90 times more likely to die.

Kinda want him to pull through just so Pence doesn't get in charge in the event that Biden loses (can't stand Biden either, but he's the lesser of two evils...just about).

Pence was advocating for teaching intelligent design in science class, and said that science would soon point to intelligent design being true... That is not who you want as a leader. There's already a right-wing Christian problem in the US, and Pence will make it worse.

Latest is President Trump has taken a significant dose of an experimental treatment for COVID-19 that hasn’t yet been approved by the Food & Drug Administration.

Does anyone know what this treatment is?

So many people getting happy because of his positive covid result
First of all have some human decency for god sake this is pathetic and so low
second him losing the election or (his life) can open door for other people who will be more "involved" in world affairs

If Trump come back to power than it'll be bad for the world not the US because he is not into war and he is happy with letting things be the way it is, he laissez faire with his diplomacy and this creates a problem of "power vacuum"

He is letting go of south china sea, Asia to China, Russia can practically do whatever they want

Know this is great for US isolation served US well (because no expenses but the resources and power is still there and direct threat from other nations sounds like a great thing)

But this isolation policy wouldn't be good for the world because everyone will try to fill the space US left/leaving leading to choas and imbalanced world

Example of this would be Chicago was relatively peaceful with one big gangster but than the cops arrested him it left a power vacuum and the city's murder rate sky rocketed leading to chaos

So for US and if we are looking to get out of the worlds affair than Trump should be the number 1 choice cause his second term would transform US diplomacy for decades

But the world can't afford to lose US and if his foreign policy is continued unabated than no one can stop China and Russia and there'll major wars that can happen due to this power vacuum

So Trump reelection victory is not good for the world

This is real. He and his people are infected. I don’t think you can make this up. This is going to be a disaster for his campaign.

A feverish US President Donald Trump has been flown to hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.

The White House said the president was "fatigued but in good spirits" and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Mr Trump received an experimental drug cocktail injection at the White House after he and First Lady Melania Trump both tested positive for Covid-19.

It is a potential setback as he trails Democratic challenger Joe Biden a month before the presidential election.

How did the president look on Friday?
Wearing a mask and suit, Mr Trump walked out across the White House lawn on Friday afternoon to his helicopter, Marine One, for the short flight to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the Washington DC suburbs.

He waved and gave a thumbs-up to reporters but said nothing before boarding the aircraft.

In a video posted to Twitter, Mr Trump said: "I think I'm doing very well. But we're going to make sure that things work out. The first lady is doing very well. So thank you very much."

Donald Trump arrives at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center
The president's children, Ivanka and Eric, retweeted his post, praising him as a "warrior". Ms Trump added: "I love you dad."

Mr Trump was admitted to the presidential suite at Walter Reed, which is where US presidents usually have their annual check-up.

Shortly before midnight, he tweeted again: "Going welI, I think! Thank you to all. LOVE!!!"

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement: "President Trump remains in good spirits, has mild symptoms, and has been working throughout the day.

"Out of an abundance of caution, and at the recommendation of his physician and medical experts, the president will be working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed for the next few days.

"President Trump appreciates the outpouring of support for both he and the first lady."

Mr Trump's symptoms include a low-grade fever, according to the BBC's US partner CBS News.

White House communications director Alyssa Farah said the president had not transferred his powers to Vice-President Mike Pence.

"The president is in charge," she said.

But he pulled out of a video conference call with vulnerable seniors scheduled for Friday, leaving Mr Pence to chair the meeting.

Under the US constitution, if Mr Trump did become too ill to carry out his duties, he could hand over his powers to the vice-president temporarily.

That means Mr Pence - who tested negative for Covid-19 on Friday - would become acting president until Mr Trump was fit again and could resume work

Bill Stepien, Donald Trump's campaign manager, has become the latest official close to the president to test positive for Covid-19.

Stepien received his results on Friday evening and is experiencing “mild flu-like symptoms", Politico reports.

He will now reportedly work from home.

Trump being treated with remdesivir, physician says

The presidential physician has said Donald Trump is not in need of supplemental oxygen and is being treated with remdesivir.

Sean Conley said the president is doing "very well" in a memorandum.

Remdesivir is an anti-viral medicine that has been used against Ebola.

Seven Republican senators sat in a row at last Saturday's White House event to announce Amy Coney Barrett as President Trump's Supreme Court nominee.

Two of them have so far tested positive for Covid-19.

Senator Mike Lee of Utah (at the far end of the row, in the blue tie) was not wearing a mask. In a video shared on social media he can be seen hugging other guests after the ceremony.

A few seats down, in the middle of the photo wearing the grey mask, is North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis. He also revealed on Friday that he had contracted the virus.

It is unknown when they caught it. Both men said they were feeling well and showing no symptoms.

Kellyanne Conway, a former adviser to President Trump, has tested positive. She was sitting directly behind Melania Trump, who also tested positive.

The only other senator to provide the results of a new test by Friday evening was Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, sitting second from the left.

She did not wear a mask on this occasion - and she also travelled with Trump as one of his guests at this week's presidential debate. But she says her test came back negative.

It takes five days on average from the moment a person is infected for symptoms to start showing, but it can be much longer.

People in the New York neighbourhood where Donald Trump grew up know only too well that COVID-19 doesn't discriminate.

In six months more than 33,000 people have died with the virus in New York and more than 6,000 in the borough of Queens - the city's worst-hit area.

Elmhurst Hospital in Queens was at the epicentre of New York's outbreak. The scenes were described by staff as apocalyptic. It was so overwhelmed with patients that refrigerated lorries were brought in to store the dead.

Perhaps little surprise there was a sense of frustration from hospital staff to news the president has tested positive.

"He's acting like he's immune, like he's a superhero. He's a normal regular person," said healthcare worker Angel Candelario. "America's supposed to consider itself a superpower. Right now, it doesn't look like it."

This has all come at a deeply testing and tense time for America, and just a month from the presidential election. The country has lost more people than anywhere else in the world to COVID-19 - more than 207,000 lives, accounting for more than 20% of global deaths.

You don't need to go far in Queens to meet someone who has lost a loved one to COVID-19 - and many lost patience with the president's handling of the crisis months ago.

"It's very scary. He should have found a safer way and used his mask," said hospital worker Audrey Murphy. "If the president has COVID, it gives a bad outlook for everybody else.

"I lost a lot of people that I work with and friends and family. And I just think it should have been handled in a better way."

The president politicised face masks early on in the pandemic, only endorsing them four months into the crisis. Even then he has only personally been seen in public two or three time wearing a mask - instead, he opts for daily testing and has often referred to himself as the most tested person in America. But testing doesn't protect from the virus.

Now, Mr Trump's diagnosis undermines his positive spin on the pandemic and a core message of his election campaign that America is through the worst of the pandemic.

What will be telling is how his positive test is received by swathes of Americans who believe the threat of coronavirus is being exaggerated to hamper his re-election.

Len Swanson first met Sky News at an anti-masking rally in Texas. He calls himself the face of the resistance to coronavirus measures and is unconcerned by the president's illness.

"Yes your prime minister got sick but he's not Donald Trump," Mr Swanson told Sky News.

"Donald Trump has kept himself in better health conditions than your prime minister did. We're not concerned with our president. I know he's got the same attitude and resolve as I do.

"He is right now conducting meetings. He's on Zoom meetings. He's on the telephone now. He's not sitting in bed. He's being the president... It's a hoax. It's a virus, yes, but it has been politicised as a weapon to strike fear in order to try to derail the Trump government."

The reality is we don't know what Mr Trump is doing right now. This is a narrative some of his supporters want to believe - that coronavirus is a hoax and that the commander in chief is still actively at the helm running the country from quarantine. In the coming weeks the reality could be very different if the president's health deteriorates.

This is a crucial moment in the election cycle - and one of the most testing years in American history. The president's health has now thrown the country into yet more uncertainty.
