Trump fires lead official on economic data as tariffs cause market drop
US President Donald Trump said he would fire the head of the agency charged with publishing some of America's most closely watched economic data, after a weaker-than-expected jobs report stoked further alarm about his tariff policies.
In a post on social media, Trump accused - without evidence - the commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, of manipulating jobs figures for political reasons.
The decision shocked Wall Street and raised alarm about White House interference in economic data.
In her response, McEntarfer called her time as commissioner "the honour of my life", while describing the agency's work as "vital and important".
It came as global stock markets shuddered after Trump moved forward with plans to sharply raise tariffs on goods around the world. Many forecasters are predicting Trump's tariffs will hurt the economy.
In the US, the three major indexes dropped, with the S&P closing 1.6% lower, following earlier sell-offs in Europe and Asia.
Ryan Sweet, chief US economist at Oxford Economics, said the decision to fire the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was concerning, noting that high-quality economic data is essential to businesses and not easily replicated with private sources.
"Clearly, this is a step in a very bad direction," he said. "If there are any questions around the integrity of the data ... it's going to create a lot of problems."
But new data this week and a string of updates from companies on tariff costs have made those forecasts harder to ignore.
On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that employers in the US added just 73,000 jobs in July. It also dramatically revised estimates of job growth in May and June, reporting 250,000 fewer jobs created than previously thought.
Trump cited the revisions as he announced his decision to fire Ms McEntarfer.
"We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY," he wrote on social media.
The head of the Labor Department, which oversees the BLS, wrote on social media that the agency's deputy commissioner William Wiatrowski would step into the role during the search for a replacement.
The Labor Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The BLS revises jobs numbers every month as new data comes in, typically adding or subtracting ten of thousands of positions.
Though this month's changes were significantly larger than usual, analysts said the updates were consistent with other data showing slowdown.
Some speculated that they could reflect a hit to small businesses, which are typically slower to respond to surveys and are especially vulnerable to tariffs.
"Revisions are normal," Mr Sweet said. "They're trying to get this right."
Ms McEntarfer had worked for the government for more than 20 years before being nominated to lead the BLS in 2023. She was later confirmed near unanimously by the US Senate.
Michael Strain, director of economic policy studies at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute, defended Ms Entarfer, saying she had conducted herself with "great integrity".
"It is imperative that decisionmakers understand that government statistics are unbiased and of the highest quality. By casting doubt on that, the President is damaging the United States," he wrote on social media.
Jed Kolko, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, said the firing raised serious alarm.
"For six months, I've said that threats to economic data have been more collateral damage than intentional harm. No longer. Firing the head of the BLS is five-alarm intentional harm to the integrity of US economic data and the entire statistical system," he wrote on social media.
Trump defended the decision and said her departure was needed to ensure there were "people that we can trust" in these posts.
"Why should anybody trust numbers?" the president told reporters when leaving the White House on Friday.
"I believe the numbers were phony, just like they were before the election, and there were other times - so you know what I did? I fired her, and you know what I did? The right thing."
Tariffs hit global markets
The fight over data comes as Trump remakes trade policy, hitting goods from countries around the world with new tariffs ranging from 10% to 50%.
When Trump put forward similar plans in April, shares in the US tumbled more than 10% in a week as concerns spread to the dollar and bond markets.
The stock market recovered after he suspended some of the most drastic measures, leaving in place a less punishing, more expected 10% levy. In recent weeks, indexes in the US have been trading around all-time highs.
The latest measures are less extreme than what Trump first put forward in April, but they will still push the average tariff rate to roughly 17%, up from less than 2.5% at the start of the year.
"The reality is Trump got emboldened by the fact that markets came right back," Michael Gayed, a portfolio manager for The Free Markets ETF, told the BBC's Opening Bell. "Now he's going to try his luck again."
Shares in the US opened lower on Friday morning, with losses accelerating over the course of the afternoon. The S&P 500 closed down 1.6%, while the Dow dropped 1.2% and the Nasdaq fell 2.2%.
France's CAC 40 closed down 2.9%, while German's DAX fell 2.6%. In the UK, the FTSE fell 0.7%.
Earlier, the leading index in South Korea fell 3.8%, the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong dropped 1% and Japan's Nikkei fell 0.6%.
In the aftermath of the jobs report, Trump also launched another attack at Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell, who he said is moving too slowly to lower borrowing costs.
Powell leads the 12-person committee that sets the central bank's interest rate policy, which influences interest rates for loans across the economy.
On Friday, one of the voting members of that committee, Adriana Kugler, whose term was due to end in January, said she would resign, giving Trump an opportunity to install someone new.

Export-dependent economies in South East Asia were among the hardest-hit by the new tariffs.

Higher tariffs on Mexico were paused for another 90 days as negotiations continue to strike a trade deal.

Major chipmakers that have made significant investments in the US appear to have dodged the new tariff. Government officials in Taiwan and South Korea have said in separate statements that TSMC, SK Hynix, and Samsung would be exempt from the new levy.

President Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to overturn a lower court decision that found many of his sweeping tariffs were illegal.
In a petition filed late on Wednesday, the administration asked the justices to quickly intervene to rule that the president has the power to impose such import taxes on foreign nations.
A divided US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit last week ruled 7-4 that the tariffs Trump brought in through an emergency economic powers act did not fall within the president's mandate and that setting levies was "a core Congressional power".
The case could upend Trump's economic and foreign policy agenda and force the US to refund billions in tariffs.
Trump had justified the tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which gives the president the power to act against "unusual and extraordinary" threats.
In April, Trump declared an economic emergency, arguing that a trade imbalance had undermined domestic manufacturing and was harmful to national security.
While the appellate court ruled against the president, it postponed its decision from taking effect, allowing the Trump administration time to file an appeal.
"The stakes in this case could not be higher," Solicitor General John Sauer said in Wednesday night's filing.
He wrote that the lower court's "erroneous decision has disrupted highly impactful, sensitive, ongoing diplomatic trade negotiations, and cast a pall of legal uncertainty over the President's efforts to protect our country by preventing an unprecedented economic and foreign policy crisis".
Lawyers representing small businesses challenging the tariffs said they were confident they would win the case.
"These unlawful tariffs are inflicting serious harm on small businesses and jeopardising their survival," said Jeffrey Schwab of Liberty Justice Center. "We hope for a prompt resolution of this case for our clients."
If the Supreme Court justices deny the review, the ruling could take effect on 14 October.
In May, the New York-based Court of International Trade declared the tariffs were unlawful. That decision was also put on hold during the appeal process.
The rulings came in response to lawsuits filed by small businesses and a coalition of US states opposing the tariffs.
In April, Trump signed executive orders imposing a baseline 10% tariff as well as "reciprocal" tariffs intended to correct trade imbalances on more than 90 countries.

Lawyers representing small businesses challenging the tariffs said they were confident they would win the case.
"These unlawful tariffs are inflicting serious harm on small businesses and jeopardising their survival," said Jeffrey Schwab of Liberty Justice Center. "We hope for a prompt resolution of this case for our clients."
If the Supreme Court justices deny the review, the ruling could take effect on 14 October.
In May, the New York-based Court of International Trade declared the tariffs were unlawful. That decision was also put on hold during the appeal process.
The rulings came in response to lawsuits filed by small businesses and a coalition of US states opposing the tariffs.
In April, Trump signed executive orders imposing a baseline 10% tariff as well as "reciprocal" tariffs intended to correct trade imbalances on more than 90 countries.
In addition to those tariffs, the appellate court ruling also strikes down levies on Canada, Mexico and China, which Trump argues are necessary to stop the importation of drugs.
The decision does not apply to some other US duties, like those imposed on steel and aluminium, which were brought in under a different presidential authority.

"Many of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies either already have some production in the US or have announced plans to build production in the near future," he said.
The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations has called for "urgent discussions" to make sure Trump's plans for new tariffs do not cause any harm to patients in the EU or the US.
European officials have said pharmaceutical exports are shielded from tariffs higher than 15%, under terms of a framework agreed between the US and the EU earlier this year.
The UK exported more than $6bn (£4.5bn) worth of pharmaceutical products to the US last year, according to the United Nations.

'Total turmoil' as Trump tariffs slam home-goods industry, consumers
Even as the costs associated with buying and maintaining homes remains out of reach for many Americans, new tariffs on housing goods manufacturers will likely make it harder to remodel and decorate, with dire consequences for much of the home goods industry, not to mention the broader economy.
The tariffs, announced on Truth Social on Sept. 25 by President Trump, include a 30% levy on upholstered furniture, and 50% on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities.
“People haven't been able to trade over or up in housing for so many reasons,” said Maggie Kulyk, founder and CEO of Chicory Wealth, a wealth advisory firm. “Wages have not kept pace with the inflation of the housing market. Then interest rates rose. So you've got people who are quite literally stuck in place. And now they want kitchen cabinets. Well, they’re going to pay more and they might not get them for a long time.”
What does “paying more” mean? Remodeling experts interviewed by USA TODAY in April, after the first round of tariffs were rolled out, estimated that the cost of renovating a home could rise as much as 25%. An additional 50% levy on cabinets and vanities could jack up that estimate.
A summary from This Old House suggests that lower-end, prefabricated bathroom vanities can be had for as little as $100 to $2,600, while custom-built versions may cost as much as $2,800. Installation may be hundreds or even thousands more – but, as Kulyk points out, many immigrant communities that may traditionally have supplied the labor for such installations are being targeted for deportations.
Data from home-services company Angi, meanwhile, shows that homeowners can expect to spend, on average, $6,317 on cabinets, although projects may cost as little as $1,978 and as much as $11,044.
American producers of kitchen cabinets may be one of the few players happy with the new tariffs. Two industry groups, the American Kitchen Cabinet Alliance and the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, have advocated for tariffs “of at least 100%,” they say, “to stop the flood of foreign imports.”
That kitchen renovation is going to become a lot more expensive if new tariffs on cabinets go into effect.
The two groups, in materials posted online, write that over 250,000 American jobs are at stake as countries including Mexico, Vietnam, and Malaysia bring cheaper products from China into the U.S.
How strong is the economy?
While reshoring American manufacturing and protecting domestic jobs may be the goal, some observers are concerned that these policy steps are being taken at the expense of moderate-income Americans, many of whom are struggling to keep up.
Official economic data currently shows that the American economy is strong and has remained resilient in the face of the White House’s shock-and-awe tariff policies. Economic output, or GDP, rose 3.8% in the second quarter of 2025, the Commerce Department said on Sept. 25, driven by a healthy 2.5% increase in consumer spending.
But Kulyk is struck by recent reporting that shows that it’s higher-end shoppers propping up consumer spending. Recent research from the Boston Fed bears out a February analysis from Moody’s Analytics that found that the top 10% of earners – households making about $250,000 a year or more – account for one-half of all spending.
For everyone else, however, things are getting more challenging. Average credit scores are declining for many Americans, and many are struggling to repay student loans.
“We're living in a very dangerous situation, both politically and macroeconomically,” Kulyk said in an interview. “I do think that when the rubber hits the road and some of the folks who are only making $200,000 a year realize they thought they had a seat at the table, but now they're on the menu, then we're going to see significantly more social unrest, potentially.”
Tariffs cause 'total turmoil' in industry
In the home goods industry, meanwhile, tariffs are causing “total turmoil,” according to Barbara Karpf, founder and president of DecoratorsBest, one of the premier online suppliers of products like textiles and wallpaper traditionally only available to tradespeople.
“A lot of companies are just discontinuing or closing out a lot of their product,” Karpf said in an interview. “They’re selling less product and the companies abroad are stuck with products in production, and some things are in transit, and are going to sit in warehouses.”
Even if some companies are open to the idea of reshoring manufacturing, there’s no way to start production in a matter of months, let alone by Oct. 1. Some of Karpf’s contacts have researched the possibility, only to learn that the machinery they would need is now prohibitively expensive thanks to earlier tariffs. Some are discontinuing various product lines, and others are cutting workers or closing altogether.
DecoratorsBest is doing well, Karpf said, but she’s had to table plans to hire more workers and other investments.
“I don’t disagree with some of the reciprocal tariffs or wanting to bring money back into the government. I respect that the president is taking a new stance. I understand some of it,” she said. “But the randomness of it and the lack of notice, this is not a way to do business. You can’t grow or flourish, you just pray that you wake up and there’s not another tariff tweet.”

In an earlier post on Friday, he hit back at Beijing's move this week to tighten its rules for exports of rare earths, accusing China of "becoming very hostile" and trying to hold the world "captive".
He threatened to pull out of a meeting with China's President Xi Jinping. He later said he had not cancelled it, but that he did not know "that we're going to have it".
"I'm going to be there regardless," he told reporters at the White House.
Financial markets dropped in the wake of Trump's remarks, with the S&P 500 closing down 2.7%, its steepest fall since April.
China dominates production of rare earths and certain other key materials, which are key components in cars, smartphones and many other items.
The last time Beijing tightened export controls - after Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods early this year - there was an outcry from many US firms reliant on the materials. Carmaker Ford even had to temporarily pause production.
In addition to tightening rules for rare earth exports, China has opened a monopoly investigation into the US tech firm Qualcomm that could stall its acquisition of another chipmaker.
Although Qualcomm is based in the US, a significant portion of its business is concentrated in China.
Beijing has also said it will charge new port fees to ships with ties to the US, including those owned or operated by US firms.
"Some very strange things are happening in China!" Trump wrote in a post on social media on Friday. "They are becoming very hostile."
The US and China have been in a fragile trade détente since May, when the two sides agreed to drop triple-digit tariffs on each others' goods that had nearly stopped trade between the two countries.
The move left US tariffs on Chinese goods facing an added 30% levy compared with the start of the year, while US goods entering China face a new 10% tariff.
Officials have held a series of talks since then on matters including TikTok, agricultural purchases, and the trade of rare earths and advanced technology like semiconductors.

"He's looking for ways to seize the initiative," he said. "The Trump administration is having to play a game of whack-a-mole and deal with these issues as they come up."
He added that he did not think China was worried about US retaliation in response.
"What China took away from the Liberation Day tariffs and the cycle of escalation followed by de-escalation is that the Chinese side had a higher pain threshold," he said. "From their perspective, the Trump administration blinked."
In prior rounds of trade talks, China has pushed for looser US restrictions on semiconductors. It is also interested in securing more stable tariff policies that would make it easier for its businesses to sell into the US.
Xi had previously used as leverage his country's dominance of rare earths production.
But the export rules unveiled this week target overseas defence manufacturers, making them particularly serious, said Gracelin Baskaran, director of the critical minerals security program at Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.
"Nothing makes America move like targeting our defence industry," she said. "The US is going to have to negotiate because we have limited options, and in an era of rising geopolitical tension and potential conflict, we need to build our industrial defence base."
While a Trump-Xi meeting now looks unlikely, she said it was not necessarily completely off the table. Ms Baskaran said there's still time and room for talks. China's new rules don't take effect until December.
"Negotiations are likely imminent," she said. "Who does them and where they happen will be determined with time."

Trump says trade talks with Canada 'terminated' over anti-tariffs advert
US President Donald Trump has said he is immediately ending all trade negotiations with Canada.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the country had run an advert featuring former US President Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.
"Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED," Trump wrote late on Thursday.
The US president has imposed a 35% levy on Canadian imports, although he has allowed exemptions for goods that fall under the USMCA - a free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada that Trump negotiated during his first term.
Trump said the video, sponsored by the Ontario government, was designed to "interfere with" the US Supreme Court, referring to an upcoming decision in November on whether Washington's sweeping global tariffs are legal.
The court's decision represents the biggest test of Trump's presidential authority and signature economic policy, potentially forcing the US to refund billions collected in tariffs.
In the minute-long advert published last week, Reagan's voice is heard narrating over images that include the New York Stock Exchange and cranes adorned with both US and Canadian flags.
The video excerpts a 1987 national radio address by Reagan that focused on foreign trade.
"When someone says 'let's impose tariffs on foreign imports', it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes, for a short while it works, but only for a short time," Reagan says.
"But over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American, worker and consumer.
"High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars... Markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industries shut down and millions of people lose their jobs," Reagan adds.
In a post on X, the Ronald Reagan Foundation said that the Ontario government had used "selective audio and video" of the former US president's remarks on tariffs.
"The Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks," the statement added.
The foundation said the advert "misrepresents" the former president's address, without specifying why.
It said the foundation is "reviewing its legal options".
In the post accompanying the video advert, Ontario Premier Doug Ford wrote that "we'll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada."
Ford, who leads Canada's most populous province and its largest economy, has been a vocal critic of the US tariffs.
Ontario has been among the Canadian provinces hardest hit by the US tariffs, particularly in the car and steel industries.
Ford hit back at Trump's earlier tariff threat against Canada by saying he was willing to cut off power supply to the US.
He had also described Washington's trade policies against Canada as having pulled a knife and "yanked it into us", and called on US lawmakers to put pressure on Trump.
Mark Carney and Doug Ford have not yet commented on Trump's announcement.
The advert was run as part of a campaign worth $75m Canadian dollars (£40m; $54m) on mainstream TV channels in the US.
Trump has also imposed sector-specific levies on Canadian goods, including 50% on metals and 25% on automobiles.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the country had run an advert featuring former US President Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.
"Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED," Trump wrote late on Thursday.
The US president has imposed a 35% levy on Canadian imports, although he has allowed exemptions for goods that fall under the USMCA - a free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada that Trump negotiated during his first term.
Trump said the video, sponsored by the Ontario government, was designed to "interfere with" the US Supreme Court, referring to an upcoming decision in November on whether Washington's sweeping global tariffs are legal.
The court's decision represents the biggest test of Trump's presidential authority and signature economic policy, potentially forcing the US to refund billions collected in tariffs.
In the minute-long advert published last week, Reagan's voice is heard narrating over images that include the New York Stock Exchange and cranes adorned with both US and Canadian flags.
The video excerpts a 1987 national radio address by Reagan that focused on foreign trade.
"When someone says 'let's impose tariffs on foreign imports', it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes, for a short while it works, but only for a short time," Reagan says.
"But over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American, worker and consumer.
"High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars... Markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industries shut down and millions of people lose their jobs," Reagan adds.
In a post on X, the Ronald Reagan Foundation said that the Ontario government had used "selective audio and video" of the former US president's remarks on tariffs.
"The Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks," the statement added.
The foundation said the advert "misrepresents" the former president's address, without specifying why.
It said the foundation is "reviewing its legal options".
In the post accompanying the video advert, Ontario Premier Doug Ford wrote that "we'll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada."
Ford, who leads Canada's most populous province and its largest economy, has been a vocal critic of the US tariffs.
Ontario has been among the Canadian provinces hardest hit by the US tariffs, particularly in the car and steel industries.
Ford hit back at Trump's earlier tariff threat against Canada by saying he was willing to cut off power supply to the US.
He had also described Washington's trade policies against Canada as having pulled a knife and "yanked it into us", and called on US lawmakers to put pressure on Trump.
Mark Carney and Doug Ford have not yet commented on Trump's announcement.
The advert was run as part of a campaign worth $75m Canadian dollars (£40m; $54m) on mainstream TV channels in the US.
Trump has also imposed sector-specific levies on Canadian goods, including 50% on metals and 25% on automobiles.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Friday that he would pause his province's anti-tariff advertisement campaign in the US, telling reporters that he made the decision after discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney "so that trade talks can resume".
He also said it would still run over the weekend, including during games for the World Series, which features the Toronto Blue Jays against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
US-Canada trade minister Dominic LeBlanc responded to the tariff increase, saying: "We stand ready to build on the progress made in constructive discussions with American counterparts over the course of recent weeks.
"We will remain focused on achieving results that benefit workers and families in both the United States and Canada, and that progress is best achieved through direct engagement with the US administration - which is the responsibility of the federal government."
Canada is the only G7 country that has not reached a deal with the US since Trump began seeking to charge steep tariffs on goods from major trading partners.

The Reagan ad is not the only way that Ontario – home of the Toronto Blue Jays – is using the World Series as a platform to criticise Trump's tariffs.

While inflation remained milder than many analysts had expected in September, most items tracked in the Department of Labor inflation report showed price increases, with groceries up 2.7% from last year.
