Immigration hardliner says plans underway for programme to force Muslims register on database

Donald Trump’s policy advisers are discussing plans to establish a registry for Muslim immigrants in the US, a man believed to be a key member of the President-elect's transition team has revealed.

Kris Kobach, the secretary of state for Kansas, said the President-elect’s advisers were looking at how to implement a proposal suggested by the billionaire businessman that would force immigrants from Muslim countries to register on a database.

The hardline immigration official, whose role has not been confirmed by the President-elect’s transition team but who is thought to be a favourite for the role of Attorney General, said the immigration group had discussed drafting executive orders for the President-elect's review “so that Trump and the Department of Homeland Security hit the ground running”.

The Muslim registration scheme, which would reportedly see Muslims given a form of identification that notes their religion, reflects policies Mr Trump put forward during his campaign to introduce “extreme vetting” of Muslims through tougher security measures.

And so it begins...

Not far removed from the Nazi policy of forcing Jews to wear a badge in the form of a Yellow Star as a means of identification.

Or perhaps this is just the 1st step, and will eventually lead to Muslims being forced to wear a badge in the form of a white crescent?

Wonder when they will start building the concentration camps. :13:

---------
Created in 2002 following the 9/11 attacks, the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEER) required Muslims from countries where extremist organisations were active to provide information about themselves, undergo interviews with officials and periodically notify the government of their whereabouts.
-------

This would lead you to think that there was a religious test, which is false. People from certain countries (countries that were predominantly Muslim) were targeted.

A lot of Pakistanis were born in India, but they decided to move.

It isn't that bad, we're pretty well assimilated. Have you ever been to America? Do you know what people are like here? Do you live in a nonmuslim majority country? If you do why don't you move to a muslim country instead? Muslims here have it better than in Europe or anywhere else.

Muslims themselves cannot decide who a Muslim is. How can Trump and his minions decide who is a Muslim?

is it only for muslim immigrants or does it also include muslims born in US?

For posters who don't know about National Security Entry-Exit Registration System. It had two compenents,

1 - Port-of-entry registration is required for nationals of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, and Syria (including those that were born in these countries but have a passport from a different country)

2 - Certain non-citizens who were in the United States prior to September 10, 2002, have been required to register in person at an INS office. This procedure is required of males over the age of sixteen who entered the United States legally on particular types of visa (primarily student, work, and tourist) from certain countries.

This was pretty bad back then.

Pretty much all policies will be for non-citizens. I think too much talk is going on here, but US constitution is religion blind and there can't be a religion test for citizens here.

You're referring to a previous system.

Trump has specifically stated "Muslims" and not simply "from Muslim countries". And his close advisers, who are likely to hold key posts in the new Trump administration, are even more Islamophobic and racist than Trump himself.

Donald Trump 'appoints Islamophobic conspiracy theorist to transition team'

Frank Gaffney, described as 'one of America's most notorious Islamophobes', is reportedly helping President-elect select national security advisers

Donald Trump has reportedly asked an Islamophobic conspiracy theorist to help him choose the next government of the United States.

The president-elect is believed to have appointed Centre for Security Policy founder Frank Gaffney to his transition team, to oversee the appointment of his national security advisers.

Mr Gaffney’s contentious think tank is known for claiming Barack Obama might be a closet Muslim, that the "Sharia system" is replacing American democracy, and the Muslim Brotherhood is infiltrating the US government at high levels.

The Southern Poverty Law Centre has described the former Reagan-era defence official as "one of America’s most notorious Islamophobes".

Mr Gaffney, who was originally part of Ted Cruz’s security team, conducted a flawed survey in 2015 which claimed to show that many US Muslims were willing to use violence against other Americans, and that a huge number wanted to be governed by Sharia law.

The research was used by Mr Trump as justification for his proposed ban on Muslims entering the country, despite the fact experts had already rubbished the methodology.

Mr Gaffney and his organisation have a history of disseminating Islamophobia. Mr Gaffney has accused a bipartisan array of political elites of being secretly tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, including longtime Hillary Clinton Aide Huma Abedin.

In 2009, Mr Gaffney questioned whether Mr Obama was America’s first Muslim president or simply playing one.

“The man now happy to have his Islamic-rooted middle name featured prominently engaged in the most consequential bate-and-switch since Adolf Hitler duped Neville Chamberlain over Czechoslovakia at Munich,” Mr Gaffney wrote in an opinion piece published in the Washington Times.

In 2010, Mr Gaffney accused Mr Obama of dismantling American missile defence capability in an act of US submission to Islam.

He cited a “new” Missile Defence Agency logo as evidence, suggesting the logo appeared to be a combination of Mr Obama’s campaign symbol and the Islamic crescent and star. He later corrected himself, acknowledging that the logo was neither new nor produced under Mr Obama’s direction.

Let's see if there is any religion test for Muslims citizens in USA. Chance of that happening is extremely slim here.

It's not a religious test, they're gonna make us carry special IDs with our religion on it.

I think this is a great decision. Don't see any wrong in this.

It is no hidden secret that a greater chunk of terrorists come from one group. I would love to see something similar in Pakistan by the name of Daari(beard) registration system.

I highly doubt that it will come to pass here. I am not a Muslim, so you can say that I see it differently. I will never want my country to have any system like that.

All of that is the past. Under the previous system. Created, then repealed, by a previous administration.

Thread is about a potential new system, designed by extreme right-wing Islamophobes, following the election promises made by the new President elect.

As the article in the OP states, the new President elect is prepared to use executive powers to implement these new rules, thereby passing Congress and any objections it make come up with.

Only someone who might fall under the criteria proposed (ie being a Muslim in the USA) will truly understand the fear and uncertainty these potential new rules generates.

Let's see if there is any religion test for Muslims citizens in USA. Chance of that happening is extremely slim here.
At the start of the year:

No one thought the UK would vote for Brexit.
No one thought Trump would be the Republican party nominee for President.
No one thought that Trump would be elected as President.
No one thought that Leicester City would win the English Premier League.

Who would have bet on all of the above coming true?

But guess what happened?

So extremely slim or not, a key pledge election of the President elect is not something to be taken lightly.

The irony of this decision is that in targeting a minority/group with a discriminatory and divisive step as this,Trump will end up making USA exactly like a Muslim majority country.

I believe Bush had a similar system in place after 9/11. Visitors and students and even immigrants from Muslim countries had to register their entry and exit from the US with the INS.

My elder brother out of carelessness failed to register his exit with the INS authorities twice and was deported twice in 2002, 2003. It was a miracle that he was allowed back into the US and is now a US citizen.

What a joke post. England is way better than America.

That's not exactly true. I know of plenty of relatives from the UK who migrated to the US and are doing ten times better economically and career wise. They keep harping that there are discriminatory barriers to progress in the UK compared to the US if you are a Muslim.

How many secular Muslim nations are there in the world? As far as I can remember Bangladesh was the closest to becoming one on paper and even that was shot down with the fear of extremists.

While this is such a backward and pathetic step that stands against everything America is known and stands for,It is time Muslims(the good and the secular types) do some self-introspection.

Every Time an extremist and terrorist act takes place,it is always about don't demonize Islam,or terrorism has no religion or this is not what our religion stands for...

I do not support the Iraq War but how many "secular type" Muslims call this an act of Islamophobia while conveniently ignoring what kind of a monster Saddam was who tortured his own people despite being a Muslim. Why didn't we see protests against Saddam pre-Iraq war for all his crimes? I have not heard 1 relevant voice that has condemned the likes of Saddam.

The moment someone stereotypes Muslim women or things like Burqa ban pops up,there is a huge outrage everywhere but how many "secular" Muslims in the west have actually raised their voice against Saudi Arabia where women are treated like second class citizen?

Yes it is wrong to stereotype and demonize Islam or Muslims but Secular Muslims are as much to blame for this as well.

Average folks from any religion or section don't go around protesting or voicing their opinion too much. Most of them are busy with daily life. It's true for all sections. Folks who raise the Islamophobia for every incident are also not the majority even though they get highlighted in media. Majority is pretty much silent in both cases. That's my impression.

True...I agree with the part that majority keep to their religion personal and want to get on with their life, the silent few that have an opinion and appear in the media always seem to take a stand on always one end of the spectrum,That is what I am trying to point out.

That was the patriot act.

Trump is looking to please his racist voters at the moment. He has already back paddled with the Latino deportation claim. He now claims that he will only deport 3 million hardcore criminals. This will be a big news that will satisfy the right wing anti-Muslims, but at the end of the day it will be just a minor survey.

Are Jews allowed in most Muslim countries?

As far as this lae is concerned, I doubt if it'll ever pass and I'm certain they already monitor most Muslims anyway.
Jews are allowed in every Muslim country, Israeli citizens are another thing.

Jews yes, Israelis aren't allowed in a few countries. Not sure which rock you live under but there are many Iranain Jews living there for years, there's also Libyan and Tunisian Jews, some Yemeni too. Maybe you should learn to use the internet, will help you in the long run.

None of them are Middle Eastern countries. When vast majority of the people talk about "Muslims" they are actually referring to Middle Eastern Muslims.

LOL, well then those people need to go back to school to learn that majority of Muslims live outside of the Middle East...btw no Middle Eastern Muslim majority country makes non Muslims sign in/out for travel.

Yes they live in India,Pakistan and Bangladesh-2 of them not exactly a popular destination to establish a life for the non-muslim. You are a smart guy atleast I think you are.... and I am sure you figured it out.

No one has the time to learn about those things. We are talking about US, where people lack basic general knowledge. Spanish is basically the second language of US and people still talk smack about Latinos not knowing that the White person that they are communicating with may well be a White Mexican. Now that is Latinos, do you really think they have time on their hands to learn about Oriental and European Muslims ?

I've no interest in ever visiting America. Have to accept the rules if you plan to go there. Feel sorry for the Muslim's born and living there, seems things will only get tougher for them. Just hope it doesn't happen in Europe or the UK, you never know.

A lot of us were born here, we were always here. America isn't England or some European backwater, we're a new world country.
What a joke post. England is way better than America.
Having lived and worked in both, each has it's pro's and con's.
It all depends upon an individuals personal circumstances.

On a side note:

When we moved to the states (I was transferred by my employer), my children's American school teachers, unused to the 'be polite', 'speak when you are spoken to', 'don't interrupt when another is speaking, especially if they are elders' from the local kids, interpreted this English trait as my children lacking in confidence and being timid in class.

However, upon our return to the UK, after the children had picked up a little bit of the American culture from their schoolmates, the teachers in England thought they were 'too brash', 'too forward', and 'too aggressive' in trying to get their point across! :))

Culture eh?

Perhaps not right now. But what if a future employer wishes to send you on training courses, or work on a project, or even (as in my case) transfer you to their offices in the USA for a few years (with a promotion thrown in of course)? Still going to say "No", "No thanks!"?

Well at least he isn't banning them.

That's gone out of the window so now he wants a database.

Anyway he's a well known flip flopper so I wouldn't take this latest proposal seriously at this stage.

Such a system could only come from a paindu mindset but I wouldn't mind seeing it implemented in Britain if it kept people like you from entering. As you say, the greater chunk of terrorists do come from one group.

I was offered a role in the USA that was turned down instantly. Not everything is about money or promotion, sometimes it's about ethics and principles.

Fine.
I once worked in the Middle East for a British company. The UK parent company was bought out by a US company, who then insisted some of us go to the US Head Office to plan the reorganisation, restructuring and merging of the UK company's Middle East operations with it's new US parent company's Middle East operations.

But if you have made the decision to never visit the USA, for business, work or pleasure - then fine, each to their own.

Fuhrer would be proud, when do the crescent badges get introduced.

But seriously, how does this registration work. He's going to register Muslims immigrants, but I thought he was banning all of them in the first place. What if immigrants decide to declare themselves as 'non-muslims' how does one prove they're Muslim. And what about the Muslims already in the US as citizens or immigrants, how is he going to register all of them or prove they are Muslim if they decide to troll and say they aren't :))

I have a different school of thought modelled on the great Sir Syed Ahmed Khan when the British were ruling India. He adopted the attitude "If you cant beat them then join them". Muslims need to do the same, this is one of the main reasons why the Israeli's and Indians are master lobbyers than Muslims in general, the penchant to run away from challenges and not understanding in order to influence, change perceptions and to develop working relationships and to get things done, you have to work hard, be part of the system, process and fight all discrimination from within.

I remember a lot of my American Pakistani relatives wanted to wind up affairs after the 9/11 special screening and Islamo phobia attacks in the US, i and my dad remember influencing them to hold fort and stay tight and to ride the storm. Thats what Muslims have to do in the US to counter all the negativity of a Trump presidency.

Israel and India are other countries on my list of self banned ones. An Indian company approached me as well, they got told straight out! It is nice to be appreciated by everyone though for your talents and what you can bring to the table. I know I am a great negotiator:danish Many Pakistanis feel they same way I do.

Well throughout the campaign Trump was keen to stress that Muslims need to be reporting 'what they know' about their fellow Muslims to law enforcement. It's not too dismilar to Hitler's tactics when he encouraged other Germans to report Jews to the gestapo. So I wouldn't be surprised if Trumps' next move is to get Americans to report secret Muslims to his very own gestapo. The next step would be forcing Muslims to wear some sort of identification on their clothing, so other Americans know that they're Muslims. Finally, he might even start moving Muslims into special parts of the country, camps of concentrated Muslims. Sound familiar?

Given how many Americans voted for him because of hideous remarks about all sorts of vulnerable people, I honestly believe such policies would receive widespread support.

The fact that the far right is winning genuinely makes me want to cry.

Oh so you don't work for Indian and Israeli based companies...so does it only apply to the origin of the actual company like head quarters etc or also to companies run by Jews, Hindus and people of Indian origin?

You probably have a very specific skill set that lets you do that...good for you :))

I didn't say "Jews" or "Hindu's at all, the joke is on you here:)) I mean companies of Indian or Israeli ethnicity where I will be making money for their countries. Otherwise, I've no problem working with them but not for them. You obviously don't know the difference.

Those guys are dictators of third world countries, not the elected President of a first world country also happens to be the land of human rights. Dictators like Al Sissy do in fact support Trump and so does Assad cause he's a russian agent.

That's where the problem lays, islamists feel the need to criticise America whilst at the same time continue to discriminate against religious groups in there own country. If muslims have a problem with whats happening in the US then they of all people should look in the mirror.

How do you know these guys on this forum criticizing America are Islamists?! Not all Muslims =/= Islamist. You don't know anybody's personal stance, if you check any of the threads on Pakistani politics and religion than you'd notice that a lot of people on here are critical of what's going on over there.

We can't point the other way, Trump is an embarrassment for this country and its values.

I didn't comment on anybody's personal stance.

Trump is not an embarrassment for his country, they just voted him in as their president, there are a few Hilary lovers who have their noses put out of joint that's about it.

Muslims can complain all they like but America just like any other country can do what it likes.

Only 1/4th of the pop. voted anyways, what's funny most of the outrage against Trump isn't coming from Muslims (whom you think aren't American) but actually from Hispanics who don't like him at all, as well as African-Americans, other minorities, even Mormons and feminists.

Heck even Jews are outraged with his recent appointment of a neo-nazi as his chief strategist.

That happens every election, people that voted for the opposition complain and carry on for a while its called being a sore loser and everyone does it, Hispanics, Mormons, African Americans, jews, Muslims and so on. If Hilary had of won then it would be the Hispanics, Mormons, African Americans, jews, Muslims and so on who voted for Trump carrying on.

You seem like the typical media stooge when you call his chief strategist a neo nazi simply because you read a clickbait headline.

Ahhh the old you are defending them, whats this then you are with us or you are against us and there is no inbetween. Thia is where its so comical you have made derogatory remarks about Americans by calling them mullet heads but lose your rag if anyone make derogatory remarks about your race. Typical.

I've read Breitbart before, it's a white nationalist newssite. Why would so many Jewish journalists have an issue with Bannon if he wasn't anti-Semitic? They're obviously concerned about this guy and may be right.

You're not defending anything. You can't defend something when you have no clue. Your attempt at defense rather seems bitter. Lol. You are just assuming I do, trust me I am pretty tough mentally. Mullet peopl doesn't equal Americans, I am an American myself. I guess things are pretty different in your Australian town. No wonder you consider only Trump voters as Americans and everyone else is an outsider.

Yes I know, you are only referring to white people. Its OK for you to racially slur people its just you get offended when you cop the same treatment.

That's more of a derogatory word Yanks (northerners) likes to call Southerners.

Used it for backward states like Alabama and Tennessee, white people from North do not keep mullets. No one is blaming someone from Australia. Ironically a white person taught me about this mullet stuff. If Racist trump supporters can use political correctness as an excuse to call Obama's wife an Ape, call all Muslims terrorists, call African American thugs then they should no problem with other people being politically incorrect too. They should grow a thick skin from now on because they will hear a lot of stuff after Trump got elected. Anyways we will talk when you learn more about America.

I don't know why Gilly gets so defensive about Trump supporters, he took a big risk in assuming the persona of a racist misogynist and his language to describe Mexicans as rapists was either him being incredibly dim for a billionaire, or calculated to resonate with many USA Trump supporters. I leave it to others to decide which ethnic group he was targeting.

Then I would expect that Islamic countries would support Trump, they did when Saddam, Assad and others did this type of thing.
So you've now finally seen the light and have started equating Trump to the likes of Saddam and Assad, by stating they all "did this type of thing". :19:

As far as we are making up stories about us,I was given an offer letter by "NASA" but turned it down coz I heard America doesn't have good pani puri.

Sounds like he too is a Trump supporter. Albeit one who's not living in the states and not entitled to vote for him.

On the topic its pathetic that they are thinking of such a system ,religion is an Asian thing, West has progressed much with innovation and scientific thinking ,sad seeing his cabinet might be filled with candidates who are not pro-free thinking.

I don't get defensive about Trump, people can be dumb at times like how they say Trump called Mexicans rapists but when you actually listen to what he said its different and he never said that. I don't mind if people use the truth but when they twist what someone actually said so they can then abuse that person I just point it out. We often hear about the Columbian drug lords, is that all Columbians, and the Italian mafia, is that all Italians, or the American gangsters, is that all the Americans.

Proves my point, to you Trump is the same as Saddam and Assad.

Since you're the one stating that Trump is the same as Saddam and Assad, then I guess you must be right on that score.

Not only folks not pro-free thinking, but not pro-thinking at all !

Clare Lopez, an anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist who's contributed to websites like Breitbart and World Net Daily (which is even crazier than Breitbart believe it or not), is being considered for deputy National Security Adviser.

She's a woman who believes the Obama Admin is supporting a Muslim Brotherhood takeover of the US Govt !

Yes sad that it actually looks worse than I assumed it would be, guess my dislike at the way Liberals handled the elections took over my reasoning. I'm assuming it was a similar situation for most posters on this forum but this looks like it actually might be worse than what one imagined.

Still have faith in the US democracy and its systems that a tool won't be able to coz much damage but lets see how it pans out, guess we will get an idea within first qtr next year.

So if Trump didn't mean any of his racist or misogynist remarks, why would he make them in public when he's running for President no less? Why would you refer to Mexicans as rapists or talk about building a wall to stop them coming in unless you were trying to win votes? How come Obama or Hilary never got 'misquoted'? You need to quit dancing round this and accept it was ugly tactics he deemed necessary to appeal to mostly white disgruntled Americans. It should also be mentioned that there are plenty of white Americans that are appalled by the same tactics, but those guys don't support Trump.

Whether it is right or wrong, he said that he would be putting in similar measures during his campaign and now he is actually acting out on them, so no big surprise.

Some Muslims in America look down upon British Muslims as inferior in terms of education etc. But look who is in a pickle now?

I would definitely move to the UK or Pakistan if I was living in the US. Next 4-8 years are going to be hell.

I didn't say "Jews" or "Hindu's at all, the joke is on you here:)) I mean companies of Indian or Israeli ethnicity where I will be making money for their countries. Otherwise, I've no problem working with them but not for them. You obviously don't know the difference.

So you have problem in following orders from them and collecting a paycheque fair enough but you are ok if it mutually benefits you as well as them in that process...got it...brilliant and commendable principle :))

So moral of the story is- if you are a clerk who is working in a Indian or Israeli based firm you are a loser but if you are an arms dealer who makes a lot of money selling them weapons, then it's all good.

You learn new something every day :)))

Hilary is just as controversial as Trump. She defended a child rapist who she was 100 percent sure guilty of the crime and then she had the nerve to laugh about it.

Hilary has not just been elected as the next President. Trump has.
So what he said during election time, and what he might be planning to do, matters.
Do you not understand the topic of the thread?

I was responding to The Great Khan who said all Trump supporters are racist but in my opinion Hilary is just as bad.

Trump has not won the election because of his racist and misogynistic remarks....if that was the criteria, then the amount of votes he got proves Americans are overwhelmingly racist....now if that is also your criteria, people from other parts of the world including the islamic countries where the bias between Muslims and Non-Muslims is way too obvious, people from such countries wouldn't migrate in droves to the united states.

Trump might have winged it and just spoken thrash but his major scoring point was his appeal to the blue collar worker and the frustrated lower-income group and rural areas on a promise of a better life for them.

Even Bernie Sanders has acknowledged that.

It is good to read to go out and get different opinions than get stuck with a closed and biased information
