President Trump will visit India at the end of the month, the White House said Monday.

The visit reflects India’s increasing economic power and Trump’s close relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a pro-market nationalist. Modi will host Trump and first lady Melania Trump on Feb. 24-25 in the northern capital of New Delhi and the western city Ahmedabad.

The White House emphasized the Ahmedabad leg in the prime minister’s home state Gujarat. “During a phone call over the weekend, President Trump and Prime Minister Modi agreed the trip will further strengthen the United States-India strategic partnership and highlight the strong and enduring bonds between the American and Indian people,” the White House said in a statement.

“The President and The First Lady will travel to New Delhi and Ahmedabad, which is in Prime Minister Modi’s home state of Gujarat and played such an important role in Mahatma Gandhi’s life and leadership of the Indian independence movement.”

The visit follows Modi’s tour of the United States in September, during which he met with Trump in New York and co-headlined with Trump a massive 50,000-person rally in Houston called “Howdy, Modi,” attended largely by Indian-Americans.

The trip will be Trump’s second overseas this year, after a two-day visit to Switzerland for the World Economic Forum in Davos. In 2005, the US government rejected Modi, at the time chief minister of Gujarat, for a visa to visit the United States over his actions during anti-Muslim riots in 2002.

Trump built a reputation last year for being travel averse. In August, he scrapped a trip to Poland over the incoming Hurricane Dorian and a trip to Denmark citing the nation’s refusal to sell him Greenland.

Any plans to visit Pakistan? Can't remember if a US President has ever paid a significantly detailed trip to Pakistan ever apart from Eisenhower

Good for India but what’s the purpose of posting it here?
Or is it that the low self esteem, forces you to go around begging for recognition?

What is the purpose of so many threads on India here? Wonder what are those threads begging for?

Because we are concerned about issues affecting our blood brothers in India and the things that are directly related to / ve an impact on Pakistan.

Whereas this article is nothing more than chest thumping. Low life individuals will never learn what graciousness mean.

India is not related to Pakistan. Nothing here that happens internally is going to affect pakistanis. Just like how you treat pakistanis is your matter.

Who are these blood brothers?

This article shows how world leaders dont give two hoots to pakistans narrative on India and that narrative has fallen flat on its face.

Regarding graciousness, learn what grace is. Calling others beggars or low life show how much grace you have.

There you go again with the same bull crap by usual suspects. "India's internal issue".

That is why Modi need to mention Pakistan in his speeches in every 2 seconds? or Indian general need to make an statement about Pakistan, or was forced an Indian pilot to have Pakistani tea?

Your radical leader getting elected depended on Pakistan's narrative.

US favoring India was predicted way early in 2000, nothing new or surprising.

Well at least Trump wont have to worry those about bringing his wife to India! No couples photo op with Modi!

Of course then there's the 'orange' makeup of Trump. Right up the saffron street!

😆

Don't expect any answers to this by sanghis. They're too busy in blaming Pakistan for every ill that happens in India.

Its moronic of 56" to bring all foreign government heads to Gujarat. I mean, is Gujarat the only state in India?

Yeah, sanghis will point out that Xi was brought to TN. But come on, that was a friendly state as well for 56" courtesy forever sissies, AIADMK.

Wow, Congratulations to India. This will be a great historic day for the Hindutva nation, becoming a national holiday in years to come.

His worshippers are currently busy preparing orange tan tents for all pilgrims.

I think you are only watching the 2 second clips, those shown on your media. Still better than your PM whose day does not start without chanting Modi's name.

Trump should have a good time in India. Modi and Trump are quite similar in terms of personalities.

You still didn’t answer the question. And yes this tread is begging for appreciation.

Right. I dont hate hindus as such. I hate the inflated ego and the deeply burried grudge that some hindus have and if I am honest I feel pity for them about their religious choice (thought it doesn’t mean any disrespect).

US President Donald Trump sent Twitter into a frenzy when he mentioned Bollywood classics Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Sholay in his speech at Motera stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday afternoon. He also showered praise on the film industry. Earlier, former US President Barack Obama had referenced the film on his visit to India.

“This is the country that produces 2000 movies a year from the hub of genius and creativity known as Bollywood. All over the planet, people take great joy in scenes of bhangra, music, dance, romance and drama, and classic Indian films like DDLJ and Sholay,” Trump, who is on his maiden visit to India, said.

Seven people have been killed in Delhi in protests against India's controversial new citizenship law, as US President Donald Trump made his first official visit to the country.

A policeman and six civilians have died in the capital's deadliest day since the new law was passed last year.

Vehicles were set alight in the clashes between supporters and opponents of the law which, critics say, targets India's 200 million Muslims.

There are fears of further clashes.

Correspondents say the timing of this incident is an embarrassment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he hosts the US president and the violence has taken the spotlight away from Mr Trump's visit.

Where is the violence?
It broke out in three Muslim-majority areas in north-east Delhi on Sunday and continued into Monday.

The violence in the area has seen protesters firmly split along religious lines, BBC reporters who were at the location, said.

Both sides have blamed each other for starting the violence.

The clashes spilled into Monday and police fired tear gas shells and led baton charges to disperse the stone-throwing crowds. TV footage showed flames and smoke billowing from buildings.

Eyewitnesses said they saw charred vehicles and streets full of stones in areas like Jaffrabad and Chand Bagh on Tuesday morning. Some said these areas resembled war zones.

Police were allowing people to enter only after checking their identity cards. Some Metro stations have also been shut.

What are officials doing?
Delhi's freshly re-elected Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, called on the federal government to restore law and order.

The capital's police force reports directly to Mr Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government.

Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to hold a meeting with Mr Kejriwal later today.

The violence has been linked to a BJP leader, Kapil Mishra, who had threatened a group of protesters staging a sit-in against the CAA over the weekend, telling them that they would be forcibly evicted once Donald Trump had left India.

Who are the dead and injured?
Six civilians and one policeman have been killed in the violence so far.

At least 35 people are being treated in Delhi's GTB hospital for serious injuries, medical officials told BBC Hindi.

However, the number of injured is believed to be more than 100.

"One of the seriously injured is a senior police officer. He has now been moved to another hospital for specialised treatment," an official said.

Shahid Alvi, an auto rickshaw driver, died because of a bullet injury he suffered during the protest. His brother Rashid told BBC Hindi that Shahid was married just a month ago.

"He was shot in the stomach during the protest and died while we were taking him to the hospital," he said.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) grants amnesty to non-Muslim immigrants from three nearby Muslim-majority countries.

The new law has raised fears that India's secular status is at risk.

Critics say it discriminates against Muslims. But the government says the protests are unnecessary as it only seeks to give amnesty to persecuted minorities.

Protests so far have been largely led by Muslim women and men, but a lot of Hindus have also joined them.

Then followed by "My fran Dolan Tramp" by Modi. It was best comedy show I ever watched.

Trump failed to pay heed to child poverty on his India visit

The US president did not meet any of the millions of Indians trying to survive on the streets nationwide - many of them children.

US President Donald Trump's trip to India a few days ago included a visit to the Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh state.

He was cheered by nearly 100,000 Indians at the world's biggest cricket stadium in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state Gujarat.

But he did not meet any of the millions of Indians trying to survive on the streets nationwide - many of them children.

Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reports from the capital, New Delhi.
