Sad to see that inside information from within the Pakistan dressing room is still being leaked to members of the media, by those accompanying the Pakistan squad in Ireland and England.

Such a pathetic practice this and something that needs sorting out as soon as possible.

Evidence - I've seen and heard it with my own eyes at Lord's and Headingley.

Looked like the new faces gelled well.

I don’t get why journos hold so much power within the set-up.

Dressing room leaks are the worst for the team unity, always done harm than good.

So what you are saying is that you saw someone who was "accompanying" the squad (i.e. Manager/Media Person etc.) leaking dressing room info. to friends in media (aka journalists)?

Look at some of the media reports about Rixon leaving due to differences etc - and also some of the older reports about Hasan and Sarfaraz etc

Most of the reports i have seen say he is leaving because he does not want to be away from family for long + he now has an IPL contract which pays him a good sum of money for 1.5 months of work

Pakistan cricket has this bizarre system where various journalists and media houses will promote and back certain players. Well there is of course a cost for the player in question and the media wallahs expect things in return one of which is probably inside information.

I don't understand why there are so many news outlets in Pakistan in the first place. Inevitably, there will be a dedicated sports show and some or the other ex-player will be droning on and on in them based on his biases, fueling public opinion in the process. That is the root of the problem.

This is a country where journalists have been known to make threats to players about ending their careers through reporting.

Part of the problem as explained by Sethi in his interview with us

Najam Sethi: My sense is that there is a lot of negativity for the sake of negativity in the media. There seems to be the case that unless the news is negative, no one will read it or pay attention to it, so that’s part of the problem and there is an obvious reluctance to accept any positive indicators. I have been part of the media, so I know what I am talking about. I understand that the pressure on the electronic media is enormous in terms of the number of channels and 24-hour breaking news cycles and so on.

We have young reporters under enormous pressure to file stories and there is not enough time to check them. So even a rumour gets attention and between such rumours, fake news and negativity, it's been a very uphill task for some of us who are not used to this. We wanted to do better things for Pakistan cricket, but we don’t have sufficient time to explain our plans to the media. They were left to their own devices and they weren’t particularly supportive, and it was very disappointing and heart-breaking, this cynicism and negativity that one encountered.

I saw 2 people doing this in front of my own eyes.

Highly unprofessional and poor behaviour.

If would not be surprised to learn that in their minds they were doing nothing wrong. Its just in our culture to be speaking negatively about others without clearly understanding the unintended consequences of their actions.

I think leaks are fine, it keeps us informed about what is going on in the team behind the background and also keeps a door of accountability open.

Might be good for the media who are getting these unprofessional leaks, but it's not good for the players, coaching staff etc or the morale of the squad.

No they aren't.

First of all you only get a small part of the story depending on what the leaker wants you to hear and how much he knows to begin with. Your views, your opinion and your information all rely on the sincerity and intentions of the leaker.

Then comes the part where you as an outside person are unable to distinguish between a genuine leak and a fake one.

You say there is a chance for accountability but all I see is the rise of gossiping and dramtizing. It won't be long untill you have different members of the team feeling the need to speak about the issues leaked since they felt like their side of the story wasn't well presented. Instead of concentrating in the training and the game you get players worried about the next leak.

If you let things that aren't meant for the general public to be leaked from time to time all you get is a madhouse is the long-run.

I am going to quote a dialogue from the film Les Miserables by Inspector Javert "An honest man has nothing to fear from the truth"

I am going to paraphrase the take home message: How can you be certain that the person leaking the news is doing it truthfully and doesn't have his own vested interest at heart.

When no one from the unaware public can judge the truthfulness of the leak, is such a person really doing us a favor or just harming the team's progress?

There are simply too many newz channels in Pakistan. In a way it could be good because of the employment, but in order to survive and for their ratings they will do everything.

If there is leak from the dressing room, then you need to blame the players who are leaking it to the press. Press and media will obviously report whatever information they get. The player leaking dressing room stuff is the one to be held responsible here.

Nothing to fear, but it'sstill unprofessional and rather cheap behaviour. And it should be stopped.

Noting to do with the players.

Reminds me a bit of my workplace, where the "secret" usually starts getting banded around by all the gossipers.

Sethi himself is guilty of the same tactic. In 2016 he was the one who tweeted that he had fruitful discussion with Shahid Afridi regarding his farewell match.

Shahid afridi was guest analyst on game on hai during those days and disclosed to doc nauman that i discussed this matter in private with two people only, Sethi & inzi. And as soon as i got out of the PCB Office, i saw the tweet by sethi. So how can we just criticize the media people when our own management does the same when it is convenient.

Wasn’t Afridi himself guilty of leaking info to his favourite news channel during the misbah era

I was just pointing the irony & yeah i would say that Afridi is the most shrewd when it comes to having relations in the media to portray his grievances for petty politics whenever he had conflict with coach or captain or chairman pcb. Nobody beats him there at least on player level.

YK & yousuf would just whine in front of their media contacts but afridi was like littlefinger of GOT when it came to leaks & fact distortion.

While referring to the people who leaked the things, Mohammad Hafeez said during a TV show:

"Birds of different kinds (people who leaked the information), that were circling around, were caught; this entire plan had been made beforehand. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to resolve things. This was the problem. I had discussed with many people that this is our family, and we decide things among ourselves. How do these things get leaked, like when a player was fined? Who would have disclosed this information and who was that person? But slowly, we found out who those people were.

Even to the extent that I asked in the dressing room if the night watchman, which is the player’s wish who wants to take the turn, is willing to play as a night watchman. If he is comfortable, then we send him out to bat. That information also got leaked. If I am asking a person who is going to bat next and this information also gets leaked, then it’s not right. Unfortunately, these unfortunate incidents happen. Insecure people do this."
