Weeks before Dutch voters go to the polls, Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said that anyone who rejects the country's values should leave.

"Act normal, or go away," he says, in a message seen as taking on the anti-immigration Freedom party currently running high in the opinion polls.

The Dutch felt increasingly uncomfortable with people who abused the very freedom they came in search of, Mr Rutte argued.

Elections are taking place on 15 March.

Geert Wilders' Freedom party (PVV) is running neck-and-neck in the polls with Mr Rutte's liberal VVD and branded Mr Rutte's message as a downright lie. "The man of open borders, asylum tsunami, mass immigration, Islamisation, lies and deceit," Mr Wilders tweeted.

But even if Mr Wilders wins the election he will struggle to form a coalition, after Mr Rutte ruled out forming a government with the PVV.

Political commentators pointed out that the election was now being run on the national mood rather than traditional issues such as the economy and the government's handling of the financial crisis.

Last week Conservative CDA leader Sybrand Buma accused the prime minister, who came to power in October 2010, of presiding over a "moral crisis".

Mr Rutte's full-page ad appeared on Monday in several Dutch newspapers and he gave further details in an interview with the daily, Algemeen Dagblad (AD).

He singled out the case of bus company Qbuzz that was censured by the Dutch human rights institute for turning down an immigrant applying for the job of bus driver because he refused to shake women's hands. It found that shaking hands was not a key part of the job whereas the man's freedom of religion was affected.

"I think it's a bizarre verdict," he told AD. "Qbuzz is of course absolutely right. Surely a driver can't say 'I refuse to shake a woman's hand because it doesn't fit my beliefs'?

"That's precisely why I and many other people are rebelling. Because the norm here is that you shake hands with each other."

Mr Rutte also complained about anti-social behaviour on public transport and on the streets, but particularly targeted those who refused to adapt to Dutch values, harassed women in short skirts and gay men, and branded ordinary people as racists.

"If you live in a country where you get so annoyed with how we deal each other, you have a choice. Get out! You don't have to be here!"

What exactly is "act normal" in his opinion? If he is speaking against violence and extremism then I agree with him. The law of the country we live in is always supreme but I just hope he is not attacking Muslim ladies who choose to cover up.

So he is saying that there is no room for disagreement? No room for an alternative viewpoint to the status quo? Because if so then there would be no protest movements, no workers rights or votes for women (both results of protest movements), no disagreements with authority.

I wonder if he (or any of the posters on here agreeing with him) have read the book, "1984"?

In the book, the main character, Winston, is tied on a table and repeatedly beaten and tortured with electric shocks whilst being interrogated by O'Brian, from the Party (Big Brother).

O'Brien asks Winston if the past exists. Winston replies that it does. O'Brien responds that the past exists in the mind of the Party only.

O'Brien asks Winston some questions, and if Winston answers 'wrong', he gets an electric shock.

O'Brien holds up four fingers and asks Winston how many he sees. "Four", says Winston. "If the Party says there are five", says O'Brien, "how many are there?" Winston says there are "four". O'Brien shocks Winston, again and again, then provides drugs that ease the pain.

O'Brian wants Winston to say, and actually believe that it's "five" despite what his own eye tell him.

Winston comes to love and depend on O'Brien, because O'Brien alone can ease the pain. O'Brien informs Winston that his goal is not to extract a confession or punish him, but to cure him—to convert his thinking to that of the Party. To believe that the Party is right even if facts tell him they are wrong.

Why is it that when Muslims when immigrating to a foreign country off their own accord start demanding rights and laws based on their beliefs and whims but do not afford the same luxury to non-Muslims living in Muslim countries.

You migrate to a country, you have to speak their language, you have to make an effort to celebrate their national events and you have to abide by their laws and regulations. If this is not acceptable then leave.

That is exactly what the Dutch PM said and I agree with him hundred percent.

On the flip side would you be ok with an immodestly dressed non-Muslim woman in Pakistan?

I've been to Holland many times, the majority of immigrants have integrated into Dutch society more than any other area of Europe. You rarely hear of issues as you do in the UK but in Holland you have a fascist party led by Gert Wilders aiming to take power. The comments of the Dutch MP are politically motivated in an attempt to bring over voters.

Besides Netherlands, Britain or any other past empire shouldn't really cry, they not only colonised but dealt with the natives in the most brutal of ways. You don't see Indians coming over to Britain killing on mass as the Brits did over there.

No. Women in Pakistan should respect cultural norms. The same should be the case in the west so I am against the burkha and niqab. Covering yourself does not compromise western ideals.

Agree with him

Agree with what?Would he say the same to White Dutch citizens incase they are complaining? This seems to be a new thing in world countries nowadays If one is criticizing then they are being asked to leave the country.

Agree that Immigrants should respect the local cultures and also democratic process of a country but they can take any non-violent action which are within the law without being asked to leave.
