Do i see a cricinfo error or has he really been that poor? How can an opener have an average of 18 after 100 odd matches and still be in the team?

I mean he's always doing pretty good in T20 leagues, how come his average remained so bloody poor? Its awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not a Cricinfo error. He's poor. This is just an aberration.

What's more, he's been a WI player since 10+ years ago.

He was a bowler back then..but now he is turning into a batsman..:afridi

Oh please, his debut test century still remains one of the most popular hundreds of last decade.

His 97 against India at Kotla is his highest FC score now. Average jumps by more than a point.

Exceptional really. How does a batting average of 18 warrant a place in team? You wouldn't even be considered a bowling allrounder with that average.

Lol t20 league is fun..

International cricket is serious.

But honestly, he looks a better batsman than what his average tells. He has decent technique and in an ideal case you expect such batsmen to average at least between 27-34 in this era of PPs, bats with extra wood and short boundaries.

Some guys play well when theres no pressure. He is probably one of those.

He was poor. This was largely data from years ago, many of it with him batting at No 7 or 8.

Data from more than 3 years in the past is irrelevant and misleading.

Smith isn't poor, he's insanely good.

Ever consider that people (and players change)?. He was bad, he is good.

Keep an open mind about him. It would be ridiculous if he averages 65 for the next two years and people call him mediocre because he will then average 30/35.

Lucky start (debut ton).

Very poor trot to follow. Because of his youth and that debut ton he was given a lot of chances (which actually dragged his stats even worse, as he never took his chances and kept extending his bad record).

Period then where he was in and out of teams, tried quickly in all manner of roles, spots and places. Of course was inconsistent in this period too.

Lately he has a simple role again and some consistency. I'm still not convinced he's a good player though- will need to keep this form up for another year or two at least.

He is pure slogger , on flat tracks he goes for it. Captains usually give him a license to go for it.

Lol, Westindies must be cursing the IPL for making a hero out of this guy , poor is an understatement for his batting .Some people are underperformers , this guy is just very bad.

Out for 6.

Next team should be worried now, he will hit a beastly 24 against them to set his average right. :P

They should've persisted with Lendl Simmons as the opener. Him and Samuels are the only 2 proper batsmen in this team atm. Simmons was actually doing a decent job, brought stability to the top. Rotates the strike, and can hit big when needed, no idea why Smith is being used at all.

IPL average 31 with close to 55 matches. 10 IPL half centuries.

Odi average in 90 odd innings is 18.5 with 8 half centuries

International T20 average 18

This guy is really annoying. Total lack of talent. Just thwacks the ball around like a sasquatch and fails most of the time.

Wonder what happened to adrian barath. He was a decent opener

I'd like to see Lara lite open for West Indies in ODIs in the long-run.

Rate him, very fine young bat.

They say life is about progress, not perfection. When this thread was started Smith averaged 18. Now it is almost 19. Well done Dwayne Smith.

Clearly a different player in T20 leagues. Demolished Mumbai's bowling tonight with a 30 ball 62!

Its funny. He hit 14 off 3 balls while playing for Mumbai against Chennai & now he is playing for Chennai & he beats the crap out of Mumbai. :))

That was the main reason CSK fellas respect him.

Those 3 balls caused me a lot of upset.

Will he play IPL 2016 ?

Where on Earth is his fitness going ?

He is just 32 but look at his tummy 40 plus waist and so much bulging tummy.

Will be surprised if he is playing IPL this year.

So in 2014 posts, it was said that his average will rise soon. Not to be :D

He was one of mainstay at CSK for last few years, will play for newly formed Gujarat Lions(Raina's team) franchise this season.

I assume his average around mid30s as an opener. Earlier he mostly batted at lower middle order. WI made him as an opener after they see his success with Mumbai Indians as an opener.

He has opened or played at the top throughout his career. He is a nothing batsman in ODIs tbh. Good bat in T20s

Maybe because he faced IPL trundlers and that is why he looks good in T20s ?

Don't think this year there will be any player in IPL who has inferior fitness levels than Dwayne Smith.

Its just odd.

We all know he's better than 18. Much much better than that in fact i have seen him out perform much greater cricketers at the other end in IPL. Just doesn't click in ODIs somewhow.

Got hit on and around the helmet around 5 times, doesnt have the game to be consistent , can slog a few on hia day.

He is basically a bits and pieces player cashing on IPL.

In order to be more useful should have worked on his bowling a bit.

Can't believe I praised him yesterday. Rubbish batsman. The fact that he is an opener for West Indies explains why they are not longer a great team.

Cant play anything above 135kph , had no clue against asghar , no wonder he averages 18.

Now an PSL Legend indeed

He showed his worth today

Has mbbs in (foreign) league cricket, something Malik "mad skills" getting inspiration from :malik

It all started off so well for Smith - a match saving 4th innings hundred on debut at Cape Town vs Pollock, Ntini, Kallis and Nel.

And the guy continues his form. Dont know how he does it but he just does it

No footwork what so ever and yet this guy could smash you for six

Not good enough against good bowling, but that is what you get from a proper hack.

However, bowl in their zone and hacks will come good.

Disappointing to see such an unfit human being doing well in a professional sport. :inzi

Former West Indies cricket team batsman Dwayne Smith, who is currently playing for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League, has announced his retirement from all international cricket, according to reports.

Lol, lot of harsh comments on here.
The guy has made a good living from a recreational activity he loves.

whatever you wanna say about him. He has been wise and made his money on the T20 circuit. He was never gonna be the next WI great but he will be a very rich man by the time he retires.

Even hafeez's average after 48 odis was 18.2! Agreed he has always been a better bowler but he always used to play as an opening batsman.

Dwayne Smith's shocking fitness?

Every T-20 league i see this guy turn up for he is overweight with a huge paunch. It is disgraceful to see him not even give a damn about keeping himself fit like a professional international cricketer and it clearly shows he is so over confident about being picked by most T-20 leagues around the world that he doesn't need to worry keeping himself fit anymore.

Having someone like him as a foreign player and playing with our youngsters will be setting a bad example. I wish not only Peshawar Zalmi but most other T-20 franchises around the world had benched him or refused to pick him given the standard of his fitness.

Dr Smith for sure is not a great example for the society. I cannot believe that Zalmi still played him instead of benching him for this unprofessional attitude towards the game.

Well it's not like he's going to get $10,000 lesser if he has a paunch.

So why lose the paunch?

And therein lies the problem.

Not like Pakistan would bench Sarfraz either for being a Teletubby.

Dwayne Smith has always been bulky and he does not play any international cricket anymore. He continues to get picked by franchises around the world. I feel he does not think he needs to work on his fitness.

Struggling a bit even in the domestic T20 leagues now.

He has made enough money now; could easily retire after a season or two of league cricket and live a great life :) Amazing how a below average cricketer managed to be so commercially successful.

He has made good money and now he does not bother about playing International cricket. He is smart and realized very well that he should be playing 20 20 Leagues.

Skewed perceptions of all West Indian cricketers being alpha power hitters
