Really surprised , out of no where really. He is a good coach , works quietly in the background.

Strauss pulls another surprise! The media said it was certain to be Jason but he has gone for another Aussie in Baylis!

They realised that Dizzy was an Australian plant.

But failed to realise that we knew that they would figure out that Dizzy was a plant, and that Bayliss is the actual plant

Wow, thought Gillespie had the job in the bag.

Bayliss has worked with Farbrace before for Sri Lanka so that may be a factor.

Bayliss offered England top job: reports
NSW and Sixers coach could pip Jason Gillespie as England's new mentor

NSW Blues and Sydney Sixers coach Trevor Bayliss has reportedly been offered the England head coaching role over fellow Australian Jason Gillespie.

The Daily Telegraph UK is reporting Bayliss has pipped Gillespie in being offered the role and is expected to give the England and Wales Cricket Board an answer in the next 24 hours.

Gillespie, current head coach of county club Yorkshire, had been the favourite to replace Peter Moores who was sacked earlier this month after England’s dismal World Cup performance and a 1-1 series draw against the West Indies in the Caribbean.

Bayliss's contract is believed to be worth several times more than his current deal with NSW, and also factors in the loss of earnings his lucrative IPL deal commands.

The 52-year-old has previously coached Sri Lanka, taking the island nation to the 2011 World Cup final, along with guiding NSW to several Bupa Sheffield Shield titles and the Kolkata Knight Riders to Indian Premier League silverware last year.

Bayliss has also coached Australia at T20 level, guiding Aaron Finch's men to a 2-1 series win over South Africa last November.

With nine NSW players in Australia's Ashes squad, including young tyros Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, Bayliss could be the perfect architect to plot the tourists downfall this winter.

The prospect of coaching the Old Enemy has been on the former wicketkeeper's mind since last year. “I am interested in hearing more about the job,” Bayliss told The Telegraph newspaper in the UK in April 2014. “I am happy doing the jobs I have got at the moment but when it comes to a position like that (England) I would be silly not to find out what they have to say and finding out a bit more about it. “I have not met with anyone as of yet but that may happen in the near future.”

Could be that Strauss has learned media manipulation and got everyone to look the wrong way.

Thats is up for debate.

Not from the point of view of the ECB.

Given the types of people who run the ECB, do you think they're going to rate IPL coaching over shield coaching and previous international coaching?

ECB have been making a lot of positive noise about the IPL for a while. And remember that England is a struggling limited overs team.Their test team is still quite ok.

Melchett Strauss has tons of street cunning.

He thinks that if the other three top positions go to Yorkshiremen, he risks being the one to be blamed for failure.
After the KP saga i dont trust these Yorkshiremen anymore.

Why?You think if approached he will reject the most high profile and highest paying coaching job in the world?

He has a young family and is settled in England.

He wants to keep his family in England (or possibly Australia).

So England was the only international job that was really available at this point in time.

If he continues to do well for Yorkshire he'll get another opportunity later and of course when his kids are older he'll be more willing to work elsewhere.

Likewise Langer wasn't going to go for the Indian or the English job.

The Ashes is the first, second and third priority for the ECB.

And tests are still ahead of T20 (as they are in Australia which is highly successful in ODIs).

Obviously it doesn't harm Bayliss that he has IPL experience but it's not what got him the job.

And I suspect in ten-fifteen years time we're going to see some T20 specialists get coaching jobs in various T20 leagues

Plus more than half of the Australian squad comes from NSW so he'd have very good knowledge of any Australian player from NSW and of course would know a lot about the players from other states.

It's such a shame, English cricket one of the leading powerhouse in world cricket cant find a competent English cricket coach!, personally it's pretty embarrassing

See what Robert and Convict say but:

1. Gillespie probably demanded the right to pick the best players, ie KP.

2. Just as Strauss is a young clone of Paul Downton, Bayliss is a clone of Peter Moores. Weak because he never played international cricket, and therefore likely to be a Strauss-dependent yes man.

The IPL experience that Trevor Bayliss has is obviously handy given English players haven't had the opportunity of playing in it, but his success in the limited over formats with Sri Lanka will have been important.

Gillespie doesn't have any international coaching experience whereas Bayliss who was considered back when Moores got the job has a proven international track record and with his old No 2 Paul Farbrace already in the England setup - it seems like the ideal fit.

Trevor Bayliss

I am not sure if enough credit has been given to the England coach Trevor Bayliss for transforming the fortunes of the England cricket team and the way ODI cricket is played.

Sri Lanka - 2011 WC Runner-Ups
Knight Riders - IPL Champions 2012 and 2014
Sydney Sixers - 2012 BBL Champions and Champions league Winners
England - 2019 WC Champions, 2016 T20 WC Runner-Ups, 2015 Ashes

Moores was a data man, Bayliss wants the players to have fun and express themselves. Seems to have worked.

Our Test record under Bayliss is disgraceful. Home wins against India and not much else.

He knows what he is doing in LO but he seems to be really poor in tests. Not backing specialist players. Just wants depth. India are the number 1 team and that is due to their specialist bowlers and batters.

cricketjoshila - Any word on Shastry? Is India going for a different coach?

It also depends on available talent. In tests every batsman has a defined role in India and they are proper batters. Eng has gun white ball talent but haven't heard of great test prospects off late. Don't forget that the young talent is going after the big bucks and don't want to be pegged as specialist test players

They have made some poor selections in tests.

First Butler and now Roy. If they have test guns in the English setup, we haven't heard of them yet

I’m not talking about those players. One example is they have put Moen Ali to open, then moved him down to 8. Jack Leech is a decent spinner who should have gotten a go earlier. They also selected similar type of bowlers in Australia 2017.
