England need to play the best they have played in last 3 years to win this , they need exceptional batting

Looking pretty clear England are playing for a draw as they don’t want a white wash first. Draw first then think about winning last match

Hameed very lucky there, healthy nick and Carey diving to his right puts it down. His 2nd drop of the match.

I think England will need to bat safely till lunch , then they will take it from there

Crawley is playing some lovely shots, showing up Hameed (who's just on a blockathon) from the other end.

Crawley played a gorgeous innings, he’s got something.

After this draw, Aussies will lose some points in WTC, let’s hope Sir Joe Root wins 5th Test Pink Ball ( Hobart) and Aussies further lose points in WTC. In the meanwhile it would be nice if South Africa wins 3rd Test v India ( or a draw).

These scenarios will help Pakistan in WTC.

49 overs to go and England fighting hard.

Not Starc’s best day so far, but he could yet roar back later.

Scott Boland’s last 27 balls to Joe Root across three innings:

. . . . . . W

3/0

just saw on some stat I think Eng have lost the last 12 of the last 14 tests or so played in Aus. did'nt think their record was so absymal.
and yet they bag us as 'cant play pace and bounce' ...ah the irony

It goes even deeper.

Since 2005 England have lost 21:3 of the "live" Test matches in Australia. They have won 2-3 dead rubbers also in that time.

They have struggled really bad in Australia, probably because their bowling does not suit Aussies conditions.

No, we bag you on “can’t play swing and seam”..

Sadly, England cannot play anything any more. The County game does not produce test batters now. Bairstow, Root and Stokes are the last ones.

It would if they could get the right bowlers on the field, but several are injured and there have been some terrible selections by Silverwood on this tour.

I think English bowlers are better on seaming conditions, also I think England lacks a good Test spin bowler.

In seaming conditions Woakes , Anderson , Sam Curran become much more effective , and that also helps in adding batting depth.

Been a gutsy shift here. Not sure what will happen in these last 22 overs with the second new ball, but it’s been a notably improved batting effort from England throughout the Sydney Test.

Archer for one would have made a difference. But the real kicker is you have no/negligible spin bowlers.
Eng tried to make Mo ali into a spinner and i guess they were successful to a large extent -Mo always was monster against India ):...but i dont think much thought was put into spin development.
Still thought mason Crane or that parkinson guy were decent - and should have been playing here.

Nothing much has happened for the last 10 overs, but now Cummins gets Buttler. This one is going down to the wire. Can Jonny Bairstow save England again?

Moeen Ali is not a reliable spinner , he is a kind of batting all rounder in white ball.

England need to develop frontline spinners and look at there wicket taking ability rather than runs they score

That was a serious toe crusher.

Laser guided inswinging yorker. Brilliant.

He got 180 test wickets. He did ok.

But just three test class spinners in thirty years (Tufnell, Monty, Swann) shows that the County system doesn’t produce them either.

You have to produce , there is no way out of it. If you want to be best you need to cover all bases.

A real pity, if thats the case. Not long back, every country used to send their regulars and up coming ones to get county exposure and hone their skills.
Whats the reason - weather, pitches? or just guys who donot have any patience to build an innings or bowlers having patience to 'set up' batsmen? too much t20?

If England survive these last 7 overs, Cummins late declaration last night should be called into question. An extra 10 overs last evening with the new ball could have made a lot of difference.

One ball to go…..

And England force a draw!

Batted lads.

Cummins declared too late. There was no need to get a lead of 388 in the final innings.

330-340 is more than enough. And if he did want 388 or 400, he should have done it quicker.

59 odd overs lost to weather. Else this was another Aussie win. Anyway congrats to English fans on avoiding a whitewash

Which one was better drawn test Syndey 2021( india Vs Australia or Sydney 2022( England vs Australia) .

What a nail biter!

Controversial given the Usman twin hundreds perhaps, but there is an argument for Bairstow getting MotM given the value of his runs in the context of the game & his effect on the ultimate result of the match.

Well played both sides, terrific 5 days of test cricket.
Eng showing good fight and ticker.
As tribute to the wonderful excellance of Aus in cricket - a lot of matches or series that they lost/drew are always spoken about as terrific games.
What a terrific spurt of some hard fought test matches in recent times.
Test cricket truly is the pinnacle.

I think.. 100 overs was more than enough to wrap up England.... But England batted really well

Long term emphasis on matches that last four days, where Counties are fined if they don’t. So no fliers and no turners are produced, just low and slow seamers. Therefore batters cannot manage to ride bounce; cannot score or even survive off spinners when the wicket turns, no foot movement, just slog-sweeping.

Emphasis on T20 and 100 during the middle months of the season. The ball swings round corners before this so the batters get no real practice at batting long.

Radical surgery is needed. Scrap the 100 and halve the number of Counties to force up competition standards.

Should have bowled Boland for couple more Cummins panicked and then changed bowlers after every over or two

Cummins might receive his first items of criticism as a captain in the post match discussion.

Good test match.

Some encouraging signs at last for England. Crawley got some runs and looked our best batter. Bairstow rehabilitated. A brace of fifties for Stokes. Wickets for Leach and useful runs too. England have come to the party three tests late, but finally some of them are sticking their hands up.

Go for the win in Hobart! Would restore a bit of respectability.

3-1 was what I predicted. The wicket will help our seamers. Maybe drop Jimmy and bring back Robbo.

Crawley
Hameed (one more chance)
Malan
Root
Stokes (batter only)
Bairstow
Billings (w)
Robinson
Wood
Broad
Leach

Hameed and Buttler out, Burns and Billings in… keep Jimmy in the team, Robbo looked knackered in Melbourne.

Silverwood absent from the dressing room… both the performance and result improve instantly.

Good result for Pakistan

If we win the series against Australia then we are favourite to be in the WTC final along with India

Please do it.

We can finally have an India-Pakistan test match!

Brilliant finale.

England battled hard, Aussies will feel that the weather saved England.

England survived a tense final hour to hold on by one wicket and save the Test match in Sydney amidst dramatic scenes.

In a tense final hour at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australian skipper Pat Cummins had to turn to Steve Smith's leg breaks as the skies darkened and he delivered with a wicket, his first in six years, to leave England needing to play out two overs with just one wicket left. James Anderson and Stuart Broad then held on for two overs to deny Australia a win at the SCG.

Earlier in the day, resuming on 30/0, England made merry early on with Zak Crawley playing some audacious strokes to kick start the morning. However, the opening partnership itself did not last too long with Haseeb Hameed dismissed in single digits for the sixth successive time.

While Crawley flourished, Australia managed another breakthrough from the other end, with Nathan Lyon cleaning up Dawid Malan. Joe Root, England's highest run-scorer in the series by a long way, walked in to join Crawley. The England opening batter compiled his first fifty of the tour and first since February 2021 to give England a reasonably solid start to the day.

But the partnership did not last long as the latter was trapped in front for 77 by Cameron Green's yorker. Despite Crawley's enterprising knock, at 96/3, England's morning hadn't quite gone to plan. Ben Stokes and Joe Root took the team to lunch with England's chances of pulling off a draw not too slim.

The visitors started strong after the break with Root and Stokes finding a boundary apiece in the first three overs. The latter pulled Mitchell Starc for a six and soon followed it up with a crashing drive through cover off Green.

The duo took England past 150, but once again, it was Scott Boland who brought Australia back in the game. For the third successive time in the series, Boland had Root, leaving England in a spot of bother at 156/4.

Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow resurrected the innings with a promising stand that lasted more than 15 overs. But just as it seemed like England had found a way to survive the day, Lyon struck. Stokes edged him to Steve Smith in the cordon after a vigilant 60. To compound England's problems, the new ball was due soon and Australia made it count.

Jos Buttler and Mark Wood were dismissed by Pat Cummins in the same over, the former with a superb inswinger that crashed into his pads. The on-field call was not out, but Australia overturned it with a review and struck again two balls later, this time with another toe-crusher, to leave England seven down.

This left first-innings centurion, Jonny Bairstow stranded with the tail. The England batter had his slice of luck next over when he was dropped ff Starc's bowling by Smith at second slip. An edge the following over also eluded the slip cordon as Bairstow continued to wage a lone battle.

With less than an hour to stumps, Australia crowded the slip cordon and zoned in on the stumps with the new ball, but the wicket did not come. Reviews were burnt and the captain was done with his spell.

Cummins turned to Boland to give the breakthrough and he didn't disappoint. In his second over, Boland forced an inside edge onto the pads off Bairstow with Marnus Labuschagne snapping up the catch at silly point to leave England's tail to battle for the draw. Jack Leach and Stuart Broad denied Australia for eight overs before Smith's vital breakthrough, but the last wicket eluded the Aussies in the final two overs.
