England [67 & 362/9] beat Australia [179 & 246] by 1 wicket in the third Test to level the Ashes 1-1

While things haven't gone to plan for England after their historic victory at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, their spirited performance at Lord's will give them hope ahead of the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

Overview

England v Australia, 3rd Ashes Test
Headingley, Leeds
22 August, 11:00am local, 10:00am GMT

Trailing 0-1 in the five-match series with a loss and a draw to their name, England will be keen to level the series in Leeds.

While they have gone with the same 12-man squad for the Test, head coach Trevor Bayliss conceded that they might reconsider their batting line-up. With Jason Roy struggling at the top of the order, the hosts might consider opening with skipper Joe Root or Jonny Bairstow, who assumes that role in their white-ball cricket. James Anderson is still not in the mix for the third Test; he will instead play for Lancashire's second XI, where his performance will be assessed.

Steve Smith's absence, as he recovers from a concussion, comes as a blow to Australia. Marnus Labuschagne notched up an impressive 59 after being called up as a substitute at Lord's, but he will have huge shoes to fill: Smith is the highest run-scorer in the series, and has largely been the difference between the two sides so far. Josh Hazlewood's strong return is a positive for the visitors. Australia now have to decide whether to bring in James Pattinson or Mitchell Starc, while giving another pacer a rest.

Remember the last time

The second Test at Lord's saw a thrilling finish, despite much of the Test being lost to rain. Smith starred in the first innings with a fighting 92, while Archer enjoyed a memorable debut. In cricket's first-ever like-for-like substitution for a concussion, Labuschangne replaced Smith after the former captain was hit on the head by an Archer bouncer in the first innings. Rory Burns appears settled at the top of the order, while Pat Cummins and Hazlewood made fiery comebacks to the Australian XI.

Trevor Bayliss, England head coach: "We think we've got the best seven batters available to us at the moment in England ... Whether we can change it round and make [the batting line-up] any better, I'm not sure, but we'll certainly have a discussion about it."

Travis Head, Australia batsman: "There was some stuff I was not so happy about with my batting [at Lord's] but there was some stuff that was really good, so it's just trying to make sure of the good stuff for longer and doing more it more consistently."

Conditions

The forecast indicates scattered showers for the first day. Rain is expected to stay away for the remainder of the Test. Historically, pacers have dominated at Headingley, with Fred Trueman and Stuart Broad heading the charts for leading wicket-takers in Tests.

England Squad:Joe Root (c), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Rory Burns, Jason Roy, Joe Denly, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, Sam Curran

Australia Squad:Tim Paine (c & wk), Cameron Bancroft, David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Matthew Wade, Pat Cummins, Peter Siddle, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Marcus Harris, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc

In the absence of Smith, I expect England to win.

The XI's for the third test starting today. England name an unchanged side from the Lords 2nd test, while Australia bring in Marcus Harris and James Pattinson to replace Cameron Bancroft and Peter Siddle. Still no place for Starc in these first 3 tests for Australia.

Better get them out cheaply then, won’t want to have to chase too many against Lyon in the fourth dig.

yep, i also think you guys are bit lucky with no starc. aussie team has been soft over the past year and a half.

but i also dont trust this eng batting line-up to post a big score in one innnings lol

Covers coming off, the start of play in sight.

finally the game starts...interesting battles coming up ... i think advantage could rest with England if they bowl decent

Nobody does :))

Probably the best bowling lineup of the series for Aus.. all wicket taking bowlers ... will be interesting 2nd innings.

Golden Boy Archer at it again... Debutant M Harris gone... early breakthrough .. Aus 12/1

The second session will begin at 2pm local time, in approximately 15 minutes.

who ever bowls better is gonna win. apart from smith i dont expect any batsman to dominate this ashes.

Usman Khawaja nicks one from Stuart Broad down the leg side and is gone for 8 (17). Aus 25/2.

Rain has stopped play again, with Aus 39/2 after 14.5 overs.

This is just nonsense, yes it’s a gloomy day in Leeds today but it has barely rained a drop here apart from the occasional 5 minute spell. We should have seen more play than this. Hopefully a late evening finish and no more interruptions now.

root needs to make he doesnt over use archer and wear him down. his pace is a bit down since last match.

Aussies hitting it to the boundary easily and then the umpires make us go off for bad light, what a load of rubbish. Embarrassing.

The umpires have decided to call Tea early.

Aus 54/2 - Tea, Day 1

Warner 26* (50)
Labuschagne 7*( 29)

Root is annoyed if he doest capitalise on winning toss and doesnt take anymore wickets today it just might be tricky batting last.

Bad light stop play.

Looks ominous for England. The ball is not doing much. Root will rue putting the Aussies in. Runs are flowing fast now.

England in a poor position here. Big turnaround needed quickly.

Jofra will have to bail England out of this.

He is the game changer.

Australia are rattling along at 4 runs per over, 108/2 after 27 overs, and the partnership between Warner and Labuschagne is currently worth 83. Big big trouble brewing for England, they desperately need a couple of wickets soon.

Stokes and Woakes bowling garbage and the fielding is shocking. An Aussie win without Smith would be something. Root better be preparing his resignation speech

Root not getting the bowling combos right, woakes is a new ball bowler not first change, archer should be first change, this has effected woakes

Will Root get the sack if England fail to win the Ashes?

Very good partnership so far , if they can reach TEA with three down , Aussies will be ahead in a strong manner.

This is absolutely dismal stuff from Root, Stokes and Woakes. The run rate is ridiculous - an out of form opener and concussion sub creaming it around like they are playing a village game. England are on the verge of cocking this right up.

Warner brings up his fifty with a series of boundaries, currently finds himself on 57 (81). This partnership looking dangerous.

@Mammon seems like your team is on the verge of another defeat or draw .Next time you should keep your emotions in checke disrespecting aus side is not intelligent thing to do

Yes never right the Aussies off, every one was slating them a few days back that without Smith theyd be lamb's to the slaughter

Really happy for labuschagne considering he's replacing Steve Smith. He's done a great job and looks a real improvement from when he played in the UAE. Nice to see Warmer in the runs again too

Great delivery from Archer to get Warner.

Bit worried about him getting overworked but he’s a seriously good bowler.

What an unbelievable talent Archer is. So impressed by him and his attitude but just hope England can manage his work load and prevent from breaking down

Nasser pointing out that England are starting to get a bit of reverse?

Awesome top-of-off-stump delivery from Broad to Travis Head, bowls him for a duck!

5 down, another duck for Wade.

That one was unlucky.

Archer is the man, who will they drop when anderson comes back? Woakes... Maybe reason why he bowling poor.

Paine LBW Woakes, 11.

I called that out live, yet another wrong umpiring decision.

The ball is still hooping around. This isn't a bad scorecard given the circumstances.

Agree, needs a huge effort from the Aussie bowlers tomorrow though, as it is meant to get much brighter and sunnier now for the remainder of the Test.

8 down, unclear if he hit it.

5 wicket haul for Archer.
