KARACHI: The cricket fans around the world are feeling thrilled and excited about the resumption of international cricket this week after a gap of nearly four months as England take on the West Indies and Pakistan in back to back series in July and August.

The ongoing Covid-19 crisis has deprived the fans of any major cricket action in international circuit during this period and the two cricket series are guaranteed to draw unprecedented viewership in the coming weeks with millions glued to their tv sets throughout the English summer.

The scene is no different in Pakistan and home fans are pinning hopes in the young Pakistan side to give a tough fight to experienced England team in the three-Test series and later in the T20s.

However, according to recent reports, PTV Sports — part of national tv network which is responsible for bringing cricket action as well as sports events to fans at home from around the world — may not be able to telecast the Pakistan-England series since it is currently facing massive financial problems with the broadcasters around the world.

While leading international broadcasters will be televising the Pakistan-England series in the Asian circuit including in Pakistan, sources say that PTV Sports will not be allowed to share the signals as they owe a staggering amount of money to the international broadcasters and unless that amount is cleared, they may not be able to acquire the rights to telecast any further cricket matches.

Sources further said that PTV has been running from pillar to post to get the rights for the Pakistan-England Tests and T20s but they have not succeeded so far since have repeatedly defaulted in the recent past and have therefore not been entertained by the leading sports networks around the world.

According to reports, the PTV also approached Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to bail them out of the current situation but the PCB has excused itself and have asked PTV Sports to sort out their problems on their own.

Millions of fans in Pakistan and around the world are hoping that the current crisis is resolved at the earliest and PTV Sports manages to clear the outstanding payments to international broadcasters to bring live cricket action at their doorsteps from England.

National broadcaster not showing this series.

That is embarrassing.

No excuse for not paying the dues. They have been broadcasting most of the series of other countries as well and paying millions to ex cricketers for analysis so not sure what exactly have they done here to not be able to clear their dues.

PTV has been paying foreign players to sit in their studios during matches.

If they can afford that, then they don't deserve financial help from PCB or anyone else.

This.

This is the first thing I came to my mind. For years PTV sports has been hijacked by one person who is using PTV's budget to fulfill his own personal needs as a cricket fan and never made the decision s that were supposed to help the channel get through a tough period like the one that it's in right now.

DR Nouman is all talk .I think government is wasting money on this channel whose broadcast quality is still stuck in 1990 .I don't watch Pakistan matches on ptv sports due to their pathetic graphic and sound .We better off privatise it

Dr saab blew the budget on his 30 minute monologues before each show.

Klusener, Jonty etc won't have turned up in Pakistan for a handful of rupees and a stay in a local guest house.

PTV Sports' response to the Dawn article on Twitter:

PTV management has strongly denied a story published in Daily Dawn on 10th July, 2020. The official statement issued by PTV says that PTV hasn’t negotiated with Sony Pictures India regarding sublicensing OF Pakistan’s tour to England.

With reference to PTV running pillar to post to acquire the rights is also untrue and completely falsified.

PTV has not approached PCB to help them acquiring the rights of Pakistan’s tour to England 2020 since away series rights do not fall in their domain. Home series rights remain in the ambit of respective boards.

Sony Pictures Network India, an Indian broadcaster that owns Tensports since 2016 has acquired rights from the ECB.

Most of the facts with reference to PTV owing international broadcasters huge sums are misconstrued and given out of context.

The Government of Pakistan’s policy of an embargo since September 2019 dealing with Indian companies is common knowledge. Making payments to Indian companies & accounts require special approvals at the ministerial levels.

So how we will watch Pak vs Eng?

I am living in a village, we don't have cable facility, we don't have any options except PTV Sports, government still charged us on monthly bases for using TV ( lol we don't have TV at our home but we pay fees in bill).

Good to see all the problems including broadcasting as well as sponsorship deals have sorted out before the series. I hope Pakistan’s team composition along with batting of top 3 gets sorted out as well and surprises us in Manchester test. :smith

Who is showing this in NZ or Australia ??

Fox Sports has acquired exclusive media rights for the tournament; they will telecast all matches of the competition in Australia on Fox Sports while viewers can also watch online on Foxtel Sports digital platform. Kayo Sports will live stream matches in Australia, a new digital platform in Australia to watch cricket matches online. The Foxtel App is the better option if you already have a TV subscription, while Foxtel Now is the way to go if you only want to stream Foxtel channels.

Bazid Khan will be on The Debate on Sky after close of play. Thank God. Just hope he doesn't overdo his dad jokes.

Test cricket viewing figures on the up

Those who fear for the future of Test cricket may be encouraged by Sky's viewing figures.

The recent visit of the West Indies was the highest-rated series of all time on Sky Sports in terms of average viewing while Saturday's thrilling conclusion of England v Pakistan saw a peak of more than 1.7million across the main event and cricket channels.

That is a record non-Ashes peak and the second-highest for Tests on Sky.

The cricketing world was a different place when the BBC last televised an England cricket match live.

While viewers on Sunday will be treated to the big-hitting, explosive delight of Twenty20 cricket, back in 1999, cricket was, erm, a little different.

You'd have choked on your Jolly Ranchers if you saw an England batter switch-hitting, scooping or ramping.

And you'd have laughed into your enormous mobile phone if you heard news of an England team winning an Ashes series or World Cup.

That's because in 1999 - when current England players Sam Curran, Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley were just one - Shane Warne was spinning Australia to World Cup glory after England, captained by Alec Stewart, embarrassingly went out in the group stage.

Elsewhere in the world of sport, Manchester United had just won the treble, while Manchester City were being promoted from the third tier.

Stephen Hendry had won his seventh and final World Snooker Championship and Serena Williams won the first of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles two months later.

It's been a rollercoaster for England cricket fans with more painful World Cup exits and woeful Test performances offset in spectacular style by the 2005 Ashes win, a rise to number one in the world in 2011 and World Cup wins for both the men and the women in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

But perhaps the most drastic change is how the game itself has evolved.

When viewers tune in on Sunday afternoon, they won't see batters getting their eye in, bowlers hitting the same line and length ball after ball, or less-than-athletic fielders stumbling around the outfield.

Instead they'll see big hits from ball one, extreme pace and mystery spin and the type of acrobatic, athletic fielding you'd probably have associated with just one man in 1999 - Jonty Rhodes.

Why? The invention of T20 cricket has sparked cricket's most exciting and innovative period for a generation. In T20 cricket, anything and everything is possible.

The format, first played in this country in 2003, is unpredictable. Afghanistan are the only side to record 10 consecutive wins (twice between March 2016-17 and February 2018-September 2019) whereas in one-day cricket a 10-game winning streak has been achieved 24 times.

Saying that, 50-over world champions England have won their last five series in the shortest format of the game - by an aggregate score of 10-3.

Under Eoin Morgan, England would have been one of the favourites heading into this year's now-postponed T20 World Cup, while Pakistan were ranked number one in the world until recently.

Individually, both sides have plenty of stars - Babar Azam, Pakistan's opener, is the highest ranked batsman in the world while England's Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan occupy sixth and seventh place in the standings.

Both sides also have two bowlers in the top 10 bowlers in the world.
