I really hope the pitch plays better than Mike Selvey was suggesting it would in the Guardian!

Not quite sure what to think of the toss...if we get a good start (say 70-2 at lunch) and make a score of 250-300 then we will have a chance as the pitch is unlikely to get easier and we also have a decent spinner to use in the 4th innings, something they dont have.

England with 4 specialist bowlers
while WI with 3 specialist bowlers, can Bravo & Gayle do bit of damage in test match ? :13:

Quote from Cricinfo :
"10.40am The covers trundle back on as the drizzle returns ... so they won't start on time in 20 minute"

Our attack will be Harmison, Hoggard and Plunkett, with a bit of Collingwood and Panesar thrown in...if there is 4+ days of play then we should win the game...there is no excuse as their batting lineup is even worse than ours

10.55am The covers are still there but the rain has almost stopped. It's more moisture in the atmosphere, and that is highlighted by the fact that Jenny's hair has gone stair-rod straight.

Back just in time from my exam for the cricket. Will be interested what Chris Gayle will turn up. He was brutal last time he played at Lord's. Jimmy Adams with the Sky team.

Good to see Owais getting a chance; Anderson was also called up in case Freddie was unfit, but Owais gets it. Hope he doesn't disappoint.

Who will be batting at 3 and 6 respectively?

Strauss and Cook walk out to the middle with Daren Powell bowling from the Pavillion end.

Cook to take the first ball.. Powell coming in..

I wish we could say the same for Afridi. Unfortunately for us only one type of Afridi shows up to every single game & we all know which type I am talking about.

0/0 off the first over. Decent length and line apart from the last ball. Good swing movement to trouble the left handers.

What does a thread about an England/West Indies match have anything to do with Afridi?

Powell and Taylor both starting quite well..

Strauss gets off the mark with a couple through midwicket..

3/0 (2)

Shah at 3, Bell at 6. Makes sense because Shah has had that great test match at 3, and Bell scored three tons from 6 last summer.

Harmison has really been tearing it up for Durham, I see. Lets see what type of Harmsion turnes up in this Test.

Powell getting a bit of swing, but straying down the legside.

4/0 (3)

But just in case, I hope not, Shah fails to impress and is dropped once again, we can re-open the thread in 4 years time when Shah will be eligible to play for Pakistan ;-)

Serioulsy, here's hoping he makes tonnes of runs...

And those yellow ribbons the English team is wearing is to raise awareness for that missing girl in Portugal.

4 legbyes off Taylor. 8/0

Cook flicks in front of square for a couple, good shot.

10/0

well he reckons he has 'nothing to prove' so dont expect much of a performance...he owes us a great summer, but we might get 1 decent test out of him all summer like we usually do.

Actually I expect a few good tests, but as soon as England are due to tour, he will have some of his 'issues' again.

I am a big fan of his but the interview where he defended his record and said he had nothing to prove is something I am finding hard to get over. His attitude and bowling in Australia was a joke and he owes more to us than everyone in the squad. Like I have said, 20 wickets in the West Indies series is the bare minimum required to start getting back into my good books.

Couple of boundaries for Captain Strauss. Bowling first on a greenie is no good if you can't bowl!

Collymore beats Strauss with a good delivery..

27/0

West indies do not look like a team that could beat England in a test series.

Cook looking a bit edgy. I expect an edge to slips soon..

Just typing my thoughts out on PP...

This same 'boring talentless bunch' were able to convincingly beat us in the first WC match :)

What better day than to test KP at 3? Australia and Pakistan have proved that a flair player at 3 in tests is a good idea.

Tests and ODIs are a totally different kettle of fish. Windies have been dire in tests apart from the odd Lara masterclass that actually made a difference

Mmm. England looking good according to the score. How's the pitch, are the batsmen settled?

The pitch is sporting, both openers have played well.

Is that the first edge of the match? 4 anyway

4, edged away. First slice of luck for the English batsman.

england going well, it'll be intresting to see how their bowlers utilise the new ball compared to the Windians.

An excellant start for England though I have to say, the West Indies bowling has been below par. Cook is starting from where he left off with surprisingly a better strike rate than Strauss. Now looking at this test line-up, i am wondering why England don't maintain the same line-up for thier ODI besides one or two swaps for all-rounders? At the very least Cook and someone like Hoggard seem a better bet than Joyce and Mahmood...

Powell has bowled OK, Taylor's been all over the place and his figures flatter him, Collymore taking time to settle in but looking a bit better now.

Fine start for England, not only not lost a wicket but scoring at a very good rate.

Booooring. But maybe that's a good thing, because the important part was being professional and winning the first session. A score of 400 by lunchtime tomorrow will be the score that will bat WI out of the game and give a chance of victory.

85/0; not a bad way to end the session. West Indies bowling attack is very weak.

Cook gets his half-century, Shah to double it in quick time against this 'attack'.

Strauss out to Powell, Shah the new man in (hopefully he gets a 100 :D). 103/1

And i had to jinx it...Shah gone for 6 to a superb delivery.

shah gonna b kikced out for a few years now! last time he scored 90 odd and was out for 10 months or so!

Wooh some lovely strokes by KP!

it's 135/2

Wonder if WIs are rueing putting England in to bat, may yet rain this afternoon.

and thats the end of owais shah...pity we'll never see him play for england again..seems like you get more chances if youre face fits...

easy victory for england in this match if it doesnt rain..windies are just poor!!..

Collymore looking a lot more like his usual self in that brief session, getting rid of the dangerous Pieterson has certainly evened things up.

who is on TMS audio commentary? I thought it was Asif Iqbal but sounds a little different

edit: I think that was Colin Croft. heard his name just now

play started again

Eng 180-3
Cook on 90
2 hours something of play still possible. 29 overs left in the day

100 for Alistair Cook. Another great innings at Lord's. Always been touted as a future England player and now he's producing the goods.

west indies attack looks very indisciplined ...... i can see england racking up big scores in this series.

tickets for tomorrow at grand stand are 65 pounds
expected to be full tomorrow and Saturday. Lords Capacity 28,000 and London population 6-7 million. Cozier saying bigger gounds can bring prices down. Boycott saying cricket clubs run the grounds and they don't get enough matches to make the money to put in it and in Australia government also puts in money so they can make bigger grounds

Colin Croft (maybe) saying he used to run 5 miles every day and then bowl for 2 hours in the evening to stay in shape/fit

play still stopped for light

very interesting and enjoyable converstaion going on TMS for a while. now Alec Stewart has joined.
I am surprised Colin Croft doesn't come on TV when WI plays. Probably his tour of SA still keeping him away
