England will peak in 2019,' says head coach Trevor Bayliss following shock Champions Trophy defeat by Pakistan
Pakistan beat England by eight wickets to reach the Champions Trophy final
England had been widely tipped to win the competition given recent form
Their coach, Trevor Bayliss, says his side were not favourites for the event
Instead he insists that the real focus is on the World Cup in two years' time
Trevor Bayliss is confident England will reach their peak for the 2019 World Cup despite their crushing Champions Trophy disappointment.
Heavy semi-final defeat by underdogs Pakistan means England are still without a global title in 19 attempts over the longer limited overs distance but the coach brought in with the white-ball in mind says they are still on course.
'We are building up to that World Cup,' said Bayliss in the aftermath of their eight-wicket thrashing in Cardiff. 'I know you guys had us as favourites for this competition but that wasn't the opinion of the team nor me.

'We were disappointed not to beat Pakistan because we had been playing well enough but we still have a bit of work to do. We reached the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy and that's probably about right for us at the moment.'
Bayliss, meanwhile, said Jos Buttler is still very much in contention for the first Test against South Africa on July 6 despite being selected for England's three match Twenty20 series next week.
England's other Test players have been rested for at least one of the T20 games against South Africa so they can gain pink-ball experience for their counties in day-night matches but Buttler will join them after the third game.
'He's just so important to the Twenty20 side,' said Bayliss. 'We've rested the Test players who are playing in everything but Jos will play in the third T20 and then go straight into the pink-ball championship match for Lancashire.'
