Everton agree £45m club record fee with Swansea for Gylfi Sigurdsson

Everton have finally reached an agreement with Swansea City to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson, who will move to Goodison Park for a club-record fee of £45m subject to completing a medical on Wednesday. The breakthrough will come as a relief to both clubs after protracted talks and negotiations that lasted for more than a month.

Swansea rejected several offers from Everton for Sigurdsson, with the Welsh club valuing the 27-year-old at £50m, yet a compromise was eventually reached for a player who was directly involved in 22 Premier League goals last season.

Sigurdsson was not part of the Swansea squad that drew 0-0 with Southampton on Saturday in their opening Premier League game and has not played a match of any description since a pre-season friendly at Barnet on 12 July. His decision to pull out of the club’s pre-season tour the following morning made clear his intention to leave and prompted Swansea to adopt a strong stance over the terms of his departure.

Swansea will now press ahead with reinvesting the Sigurdsson money by making a couple of signings of their own, starting with Wilfried Bony, who is expected to rejoin from Manchester City. The Ivorian had a hugely successful spell at Swansea prior to moving to the Etihad Stadium and a deal in principle is believed to be in place to bring him back to the Liberty Stadium.

Nacer Chadli has been targeted as a more direct replacement for Sigurdsson, with the Belgium international keen to leave West Bromwich Albion after less than a year at the club.

Chadli joined Albion from Tottenham Hotspur for £13m last August – Swansea also showed an interest in signing him at the time – but the Midlands club will be looking to recoup significantly more for the 28-year-old.

Joe Allen, another former player, is also of interest to Swansea, yet that move seems highly unlikely. Stoke are determined to hold onto the Wales international, who was available to Swansea last summer, and there is no suggestion that Allen has agitated for a move.

Meanwhile, Sigurdsson’s imminent arrival has seen Gareth Barry complete his move from Everton to West Bromwich Albion. The 36-year-old former England midfielder, who missed Everton’s opening Premier League match of the season against Stoke City because of an ankle problem, has signed for the Baggies on an initial one-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Some good signings. Still won't finish in the top 4, no chance. We'll beat them both home and away like we mostly do.

Everton were thoroughly outclassed as they lost 3-0 to Atalanta (who were playing their first European match in 26 years) in the Europa League.

Ronald Koeman: Jose Mourinho 'unrealistic' in suggesting top-four finish for Everton

Everton manager Ronald Koeman says Manchester United counterpart Jose Mourinho's claim that the Goodison Park club are aiming for "at least" the top four this season is unrealistic.

Mourinho made the observation in his programme notes before United's 4-0 home win over the Toffees, citing their £140m of summer spending as evidence.

But Koeman said: "Is there anybody who sees this as realistic for Everton?

"Please, come on. Fans, press - we need time."

When asked what he considered to be a realistic target, the Dutchman said: "The same as last season."

Everton finished seventh in 2016-17 in the 54-year-old's first season at the club, eight points adrift of sixth-placed United.

Everton's tough start

Everton have now lost four games in a row by a combined total of 12 goals to nil and have dropped into the Premier League's bottom three.

They have failed to score in four consecutive matches in all competitions for the first time since April 2006, including in their 3-0 Europa League defeat against Atalanta on Thursday.

Wayne Rooney is the only player to register a league goal for them, and his last was a first-half effort at Manchester City on 21 August.

"When you look at the fixtures at the start of the season, we knew we wouldn't win them all," said Koeman.

"We have played Manchester City, United and Chelsea away, plus Tottenham at home. Four title contenders, with the Europa League in between.

"Now we have four games at home in different competitions and we need to win. If you don't win it is better to stop."

Everton's next two Premier League games are against 19th-placed Bournemouth and Burnley, both at Goodison Park.

Before that, they entertain Championship outfit Sunderland in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

'Every manager has doubts'

Koeman said: "Every manager in life has doubts. If you don't win and you have a big number of players in your squad, you have doubts about how you need to start and the system to play. That is normal.

"I ask myself the question why, why?"

Despite his pre-match comments about the Toffees targeting a top-four spot, Mourinho did have some sympathy for Koeman and his side's difficult start to the season.

"Everton are going to be fine but they are living a difficult moment," said the Portuguese.

"I would not like these fixtures all together at the same time. I would like one of the top five, but all of them, that is not fair for them."

Spent all that money yet are getting tanked as always. Players they signed are overrated ones who lack attacking potential. Will most likely finish at mid table as always. Incredibly boring to watch they only exist to hate Liverpool FC.
