In an exclusive interview with Saj for PakPassion, Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood reflected on the challenges and changes following England's recent tour of Pakistan. Even though Pakistan emerged victorious in the series, it also marked a low point for Masood as he endured his sixth consecutive defeat as Test captain.

The first Test in Multan saw Pakistan overwhelmed by England’s dominance. The visitors piled on a staggering 823 runs, including a triple century from Harry Brook (317) and another mammoth knock by Joe Root (262), leaving the hosts reeling.

In response to this dismal performance, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initiated a major overhaul. A new selection committee, headed by 1992 World Cup-winning pacer Aaqib Javed, was appointed. The committee made bold decisions, sending star players such as Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Naseem Shah back home. In their place, domestic stalwarts like Kamran Ghulam, Sajid Khan, and Noman Ali were drafted into the squad.

The changes paid off remarkably. Sajid and Noman delivered stellar performances, taking 39 wickets between them in the following two Tests. Their efforts helped Pakistan turn the tide, and Shan Masood secured his first Test win as captain, marking a significant milestone in his leadership journey.

Main topics covered in this interview:

Reflecting on the England Series: Shares his thoughts on the challenges faced during the England tour, including his struggles as captain and the team's inability to counter England’s dominant performances.

Mastermind Behind Spin-Friendly Tracks: Discusses the strategy of preparing spin-friendly pitches after England's batting onslaught, highlighting the thought process and the impact on the team’s results.

Dropping Babar Azam: He addresses the controversial decision to send Babar Azam back home, shedding light on the rationale behind the bold call and its implications for team dynamics.

Selection Policy: Explains the changes in the selection process under the new committee, emphasizing the focus on domestic performers and the inclusion of fresh talent like Kamran Ghulam, Sajid Khan, and Noman Ali.

Responding to Jason Gillespie's Remarks: The skipper responds to Jason Gillespie's recent comments about Pakistan's approach to Test cricket and shares his perspective on the critique.

Reflecting on Personal Career Highlights: Takes a moment to reflect on key milestones in his career, including his journey to captaincy and the hard lessons learned along the way.

Addressing Ramiz Raja's Statement: He reacts to former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja's remarks about the team’s performance and the decisions made under his leadership.

Building Stability in the Pakistan Team: Outlines his vision for creating a more stable and cohesive unit, focusing on long-term goals and empowering players in the squad.

India's Refusal to Travel to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025: The Test skipper shares his thoughts on the ongoing controversy regarding India's refusal to visit Pakistan and its implications for cricketing relations and the tournament’s future.

After losing the series against Bangladesh and losing the first test against England so badly, it was a great decision by the management including the captain to make the spinners friendly tracks and it paid off very well for the team. Also, it is good to know that Shan had his say on the selection of the playing XI.

Shan tbh doesn't come across as a powerful captain. His appointment is just a pr excercise by the PCB to project Pakistan's soft image to the world. The spin dry wicket strategy was all Aleem Dar and Aqib. Fair play, its how India have had an unbeaten record at home for so long.

The victory was definitely very important because Pakistan was so down and out in a red-ball format that they looked like a minnow.

Shan needs to show his form with the bat as well now. He has got enough games.

Inzi, Misbah, Babar didn't really seem to be powerful as captain's either
But they managed to back up their lack of charisma with performances

Shan speaks really well and has a good attitude. I just wish he was able to up his Test game

Disagree.

Inzimam had reputation. The team respected him. He wasn't a sharp cricketing brain however other cricketers punched > their weight for him. He was a proper role model at the time. If a player underperformed the first thought that came into their mind was letting their captain(inzi) down.

Now comes Misbah. I dislike misbah but to be fair to him, The players did respect him. Only afridi, Umar Akmal and a few others didn't but even if players disagreed with him, they respected him. Plus to Misbah's credit he has a sharp cricketing brain in terms of test cricket. It's just the dude is living in the 1940's when it comes to odi and t20.

As for Babar, Babar performance wise went downhill during captaincy. In 2020 he wasn't anything special and part of the reason why the t20 side collapsed was due to Babar flunking as an opener. Even in 2021, excluding India, NZ and Afg games were poor from Pakistan lol, They required once in a blue moon innings by asif ali to win. Australia eventually burst that bubble.

2022, 2023 and 2024 was a horror show both captaincy and batting wise. Besides their was always discourse under bobby. He didn't command any respect from any player.

Against Lahore Qalandars, Shan Masood departed early after scoring 10 off 18 balls for Hampshire in the Global Super League 2024.

Shan Masood scored 14 off 9 balls against Victoria in the Global Super League 2024 today. He has been in good form in the ongoing tournament, having already scored two fifties for Hampshire in 4 innings so far.

Shan Masood's big test coming against South Africa. There will be no more rank-turners there. This is gonna test his captaincy for sure.

I don't have high hopes from him as a batter anyways.
