Facebook, Twitter, YouTube go down in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: Social media websites including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube went down following the clashes between protesters of a religious party and security forces across Pakistan.

The social media websites are inaccessible to internet users after security forces cracked down on protesters at Faizabad Interchange and other parts of Karachi.

The websites are not working on desktop but their smartphone application is working on mobile phones.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has also shut down transmission of news channels including SAMAA TV following the clashes.

At least 135 people, including protesters and security personnel, have been injured in clashes at Faizabad Interchange which connects Islamabad to Rawalpindi.

Operation is going on from last 7 hours all news channels are blocked. Twitter, Facebook and Youtube are blocked too. Following the reports on social media and news channels on internet through VPN things are not looking good a total of 150 people are injured including 90 policemen. I think blocking the coverage can create chaos and result in more trouble later.

Everybody should have a crash course in using a VPN/Proxy to prevent the blackout that happens when rowdy governments try and pull this stunt off.

What about just using TOR ? Wouldn't that be easy ?

Rowdy govts? they're doing this to stop the mullahs from propagating their hate

Not the worst thing to happen given the standards of some Pak journos and tv channels.

PBA condemns unilateral closure of news channels

The Pakistan Broadcasters Association strongly condemned the unilateral closure of news channels by the government.

“PBA is a signatory to the Code of Conduct that is approved by the Supreme Court and has always been willing to abide by it. The right to information is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution,” the association said in a statement.

It further said that PBA members have been responsibly covering the event and protest for the viewers of Pakistan including the dharna’s side effects as well as the court’s judgement regarding it.

“As per the code of conduct on sensitive security operations PBA members will avoid live coverage that can jeopardize the operation and safety of security personnel as well as avoid all sensitive content that can incite violence against law enforcement personnel,” it added.

However they added that a unilateral action must be avoided at all cost by the government and PEMRA.

“The outright closure of news channels regardless of their content and conduct will not be acceptable by PBA and this action must be reversed immediately. Action should be against those channels that violate the code of conduct as per the law,” it underscored.

PBA also strongly condemned violence by the protesters against journalists including reporters, camera men and technical staff. Burning of media vans and DSNGs is highly condemnable.
