"Fakhar is an impact player & when he gets runs he has a big bearing on the result" : Misbah-ul-Haq

Misbah's reaction after winning the series:

“It is great for us to win in the tough conditions of South Africa. Babar and Fakhar performed really well. The bowlers are also maturing. Everyone is gaining confidence. We just need to improve some aspects.”

“We need consistency and power-hitting in our middle and lower order. We also need to work on our spin department. Batting is very important since the World Cup is scheduled to be played in India. Shadab could not perform well, if conditions suit him he can perform better. Mohammad Nawaz bowled well and Usman Qadir made his presence felt.”

“We are working on all formats. Everyone wants to see their team in the top three. Our top order is in great form. Faheem Ashraf has helped us achieve balance. Babar Azam’s counterattack against South Africa gave the whole team more confidence. He will continue to gain experience and get better with time.”

“Fakhar Zaman has a distinct style of batting as far as technique is concerned. Many players do not follow the same rulebook. If Fakhar performs, he can change the outlook of any match. Players such as these need to be supported when they are out of form as well.”

“Danish Aziz and Asif Ali are still in our plans despite not getting a good start in very tough conditions. We did not play Mohammad Hafeez since we want to build towards to 2023 World Cup. We are trying different players for different positions.”

“If we improve our middle and lower order batting then we can consistently score above 300 in ODIs and above 200 in T20Is. We also need to take wickets and end games because even a tailender can prove costly in the end. The job is not done until the last wicket is taken.”

KARACHI: The One-day series win in South Africa is a huge confidence booster but Pakistan still need to get better at tackling panic situations, head coach Misbah-ul-Haq said on Thursday.

Speaking during a virtual media interaction, Misbah also said that an overseas win always helps the side.

Pakistan won the series 2-1 after winning the deciding third match.

"A win is always a big boost for the team but we need to have more consistency and learn to deal with panic situations. We need a connection between the top order and the lower order," he said.

Misbah said the Pakistan team did not have a strong lower order, which is key to get big total in modern-day cricket.

"We saw yesterday that even after getting 320 runs the match went down to the wire so it is important for us to ensure we have good finishes in matches."

Misbah said another area of concern was that Pakistani batsmen struggle against spin.

"Keeping in mind that we have two World Cups in India in the next three years it is a major contributing factor on how well we bowl spin and play spin as well given the conditions in India."

"We want to reach a stage where we remain in top three consistently in all three formats. Goal is to be in top three consistently in world rankings. Would love to keep on winning series overseas like coming tour to England and the World T20 Cup in India," Misbah added.

He said the team had got lot of positives from the ODI series win and one of them was that all-rounder Faheem Ashraf has brought balance to the bowling attack.

Misbah also had praise for captain and top batsman, Babar Azam and said it was important for any captain to first perform and lead from the front.

"Babar handled the situation very well in SA and controlled proceedings and counter attacked despite whatever the South Africans threw at him and this will help him in his decision making in future as well.”

"He will get better strategically as a captain. I am hopeful he will be a successful captain and batsman in all formats. He has cricketing sense he will learn with experience," Misbah said, noting that Babar was now scoring runs consistently in all conditions.

He also admitted that the selectors and team management need to utilize the services of opener, Fakhar Zaman more in all formats.

Fakhar scored two back-to-back hundreds in the second and third ODIs.

"Fakhar has his own way of playing and is mentally very strong and effective. He is not a conventional sort of player he plays apart from the book. He is a world class player. Most importantly he is an impact player and when he gets runs he has a big bearing on the result. We saw this in the Champions Trophy as well. We need to utilize him more in other formats as well. We need to back him more in terms of form," the Pakistan head coach said.

Misbah said they didn't want to miss an opportunity to invest in a new player for the 2023 World Cup.

"We need a strong permanent connection between the top order and lower order."

He also said senior wicketkeeper, Sarfaraz Ahmed played in the final and deciding ODI because of his experience and because of the pitch conditions.

He's right, when Fakhar does well you know it will more often than not result in a Pakistan win.

However these type of innings haven't come round often enough from Fakhar.

If he can add consistency to his batting then he will become a fantastic cricketer.

still needs to be consistent

last i looked a lot of low scores

no constants 30s even

Fakhar needs to make sure that he keeps a calm and clear mind when he's batting. He needs to structure his innings and avoid taking risks. He's played back-foot strokes quite well this series, though he needs to improve his off-side game a little. I'd also like to see him try to hit spinners down the ground instead of always going for the slog-sweep, as it becomes predictable.

Right, but a huge gamble as he has several technical flaws. Which are often exploited too.

Now, just replace Imam with another impact player, and we should be quite good.

Imam will haunt us in high scoring matches.

Imam has done v well..i dont like him in onedays too i think should be tried in tests cant do worse than butt and abid ali

These days ODIs are played on flat wickets with 300-330 scores very common. You must have high impact players in your team to have a great chance in any tournament. Fakhar is one of them.

Fakhar is playing a bit differently now, he's allowing himself to take the time to get settled and accelerate through the middle overs rather than cheaply giving his wicket away in the powerplay.

For Pakistan, I think rather than replacing Imam, the management should ask him to give the strike to Fakhar more, so that he can exploit the field restrictions. Imam's only job in the powerplay should be strike rotation and dispatching poor deliveries. A 50 from him is more than enough, because the longer he bats, the more balls he consumes and doesn't give a positive output of runs per ball.

From my observation, there are three major issues in Fakhar's batting.

1. When he's tempted to play a shot, there's usually no foot movement unless he's settled. In the powerplay, he needs to move his feet more in order to properly connect with the ball.

2. His off-side game is limited, he clearly favors the leg side though he can find the gaps and singles on the off side consistently. He needs to develop more scoring shots on the off side. From what I've seen, if a bowler bowls relatively full on the off-side, his first instinct is to heave the ball into the leg side instead of lifting it over the infield over the off side. This has to do with the way he holds the bat before the delivery is pitched. If he lets the bat come down at the angle he is holding it, it will point towards the on-side, meaning that there is a weakness present on the off-side. If he can hold the bat behind his shoulders as opposed to in front of his chest, it will help him access the off-side more frequently.

3. When he's on song, it's up to him to stay mentally strong and avoid playing poor shots, like ramping a spinner. It's a shot he needs to remove from his archives, has no use and has more risk than reward. He needs to also start attacking spinners other than on the leg-side. If a right-arm off spinner is bowling to Fakhar, he will bowl it wider and it will spin away, so the slog isn't a good option unless it drifts into the pads. He needs to develop his hitting range straight down the ground, which is a very good place to hit a spinner regardless of where the ball is spinning.

If Misbah recognizes this, why did he try to replace Fakhar with Abid freaking Ali? There is never any real planning that goes on. They keep stumbling and experimenting until they trip and suddenly fall upon the right combination. Same thing happened in the CT 2017. Same thing happened in the WC 2019. Same thing will probably happen in the T20 WC this year.

LAHORE: Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, though delighted at the first overseas victory under his coaching in South Africa, on Thursday said the main area remains the struggling middle-order of the team in the white-ball formats.

“It is a great delight for everyone, especially for Pakistan cricket, that we have won an away series in tough conditions of South Africa, and that too at the venues of Centurion and Johannesburg where the conditions suits the home team,” said Misbah during a virtual press conference.

“Overall, I am satisfied with the performance of the team, its captain Babar and especially from the top order, having Fakhar Zaman, Babar and Imam-ul-Haq there. But we need runs from our middle and lower middle order to set a match-winning target of around 350,” emphasised Misbah.

He said in modern day cricket, if any team wanted to win, it had to score 200 in T20 matches and around 350 in One-dayers.

Misbah said the batsmen who preferred to play cricketing shots could achieve these totals more comfortably. “We also have to bring improvement in our spin bowling department and of course in batting and bowling as we have to play two World Cups in India. Our batsmen have to bring improvement in facing the spin bowling attack, while our spinners have to bowl more effectively on Indian soil,” he further said.

Misbah was all praise for captain Babar Azam and said: “Babar is leading from the front as captain and as batsman, too, and that is a good sign for Pakistan. The series win over South Africa will further increase his confidence.”

He said the next two series against England and the West Indies were also of very important nature and Pakistan will have to play those series after overcoming all the weaknesses.

To a question, Misbah said, Sarfraz Ahmad was given a chance in the crucial match just to make the middle-order stronger and since the former captain did not have any experience of playing as a fielder, he was given the role of wicketkeeper in place of first choice keeper Mohammad Rizwan who has played some international matches as fielder.

Misbah said he was also expecting South Africa would include more spinners in the T20 series, so in the middle-order an experienced batsman like Sarfraz Ahmad would be very suitable to tackle the slow bowlers.

He further said though five key players of South Africa did not play the third ODI match, their replacements were very good players, having 40 plus averages “The Proteas were still a strong outfit without their five players, so the victory against them was a worthy one,” remarked Misbah.

To a question, Misbah said the victory against South Africa will not make Pakistan relax in any way. ‘Our main target is to bring the Pakistan team among top three sides of the world in all the three formats,” he said.

Misbah added that though Pakistan have good choices in top order in T20 cricket with Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Sharjeel Khan and Rizwan, the middle-order needs quality batsmen but he would not announce the opening pair for the T20 series against South Africa just yet as it would be premature.

Misbah also praised opener Fakhar Zaman who hit back-to-back centuries to earn a lot of applause from all the quarters. “Fakhar staged a fine comeback and is in great form now, so he is also included in the T20 format.

“Fakhar has his own batting techniques. His way of lifting the bat, grip on the bat are unique and it is effective too. Furthermore, whenever Fakhar excels with the bat his performance has a big impact on the innings as it did in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 and here in South Africa,” he observed.

He said Pakistan should back the players like Fakhar whenever they are going through a bad patch.

He also praised the performances of all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, Usman Qadir and Mohammad Nawaz. “They are all very improved players. Though youngsters, who played in the middle-order like Danish Aziz, could not excel on this tough tour of South Africa, no one would be written-off as everyone would get a chance according to the need of the team.”

I think fakhar has improved his off side game now that hes waiting slightly on the back foot should be able to play the cut shot and hit on the offside alot better.
