Lahore: Famed Pakistani host of the country's first ever game show 'Neelam Ghar', actor and politician, Tariq Aziz passed away in Lahore at the age of 84 on Wednesday.

He began his professional career from Radio Pakistan and was one of the most recognisable voices on radio.

A renowned poet, Aziz was also a former parliamentarian and a respected poet. His hosting skills on the show 'Neelam Ghar' made him a household name in Pakistan over the past four decades in the country.

"I spoke to him over the phone a few days ago, I was worried for him as he had been ill for quite a long while," said Mustansir Hussain Tarar, speaking to Geo News. "I told him if it were not for the COVID-19 and other problems, I would have visited you," he added.

Praising Aziz's versatility, Tarar said that he was the "biggest star of PTV", adding that he had shown his talents as a compare, as an actor and as a poet.

His role in PAF movie "Qasam uss waqt kee" always gave me goosebumps - I will miss him

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon

RIP. He also had the distinction of being the first announcer on PTV, way back in 1964. I'll have to dig up the YouTube clip of him announcing the schedule of shows on the very first telecast. Furthermore, he was a hugely underrated Punjabi poet.

He marred his reputation a bit by being part of the PML-N mob that attacked the Supreme Court in 1997, but he always claimed he had no idea it was planned.

One by one folks from my childhood are passing away. Moin Akhtar, Tariq Aziz, Junaid Jamshed, Amir Zaki...... somebody wrap Anwar Maqsood in cotton wool.

"Yeh water cooler apka howa" :sree

Inna lillahi wa inna illahi rajioon

It's so sad that while we were growing up we had legends like Tariq Aziz on our televisions, kids of today have Amir Liaquat  x 1000

Found the clip. Quite the honor of being the first person to appear on PTV:

There's a story behind the "دیکھتی آنکھوں سنتے کانوں کو سلام." When he started off, he would say "دیکھتی آنکھوں کو سلام," until he received a letter written on behalf of a blind fan, who noted that although he couldn't see, he nevertheless enjoyed listening to Tariq Aziz's voice. Henceforth, he added the reference to the ears in addition to the eyes.

Spoke to my mom, said how saddened I am at the demise of Tariq Aziz since he was a part of my childhood, she said he was a part of her childhood as well. What a legend, may Allah forgive the sins of the departed and grant him highest rank in Jannat.

Imo that's an achievement in itself to be able to influence so many kids

Same, but i dont watch Desi tv but was always entertained by this man. Was such a classy guy, spoke with so much eloquence. Sad day for Pakistan losing him.

Inna Lillah'e Wa Inna ilaih'ay Raj'ay'oon

Major part of my childhood is gone. I use to watch Tariq Aziz show every week, even attended live sessions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi back in the day.

He was older than Pakistan itself. Pride of Pakistan. He will truly be missed.

Inna Lillah'e Wa Inna ilaih'ay Raj'ay'oon

I am devastated to hear this news.Cant believe it. How the decency is being replaced with the types Of Amir Liaqat, Fahad Mustafa and others is saddening. He has been a part of my childhood and even a few years back i would listen to bazm e Tariq Aziz with his hands visibly shaking because of age. Bait bazi was my favorite section.

Found out really late in the day about this and made me a bit sad as such a distinct voice has left for his heavenly abode.

RIP legend.

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilahi Rajion.

Dekhti Ankho Suntay Kanoo ko Salam + Yeh Water Cooler app ka howa will always live and remind us of Tariq Aziz.

His breakup from Karachi was really bad thanks to MQM's racism

Aur yeh Waves refrigerator aap ka. His iconic words

Mr Tariq aziz when he very young, I assume early 20s lived as a tenant in my mamus guest house behind the real house for 3 years. My mamu has passed away decades ago, but his son who is in early 70s lives in the USA with us. He always has colorful stories about mr Aziz. One thing my cousin always says is you never saw Tariq without a book. He says he read non stop all day.

Ma sha Allah. Signs of a great humble man.

How?
What exactly did MQM do to him?
MQM goons came in his Neelam Ghar show when it was in Karachi. That time MQM was spreading hate against other races. Tariq Aziz was Punjabi so those people came in the show and abuse him using racist language. Tariq Aziz was an upright person so a scuffle occurred between him and MQM goons. After that Neelam Ghar show was moved out of Karachi.

“If” true, this is horrendous. Though i grew up in 80s/90s Karachi watching PTV and Neelam Ghar and ve never heard of such an incident.

Racism of any sort is deplorable. Long live Mr Tariq Aziz in our memories.
