FIA’s high-profile investigator dies of cardiac arrest

LAHORE: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) former director Mohammad Rizwan who probed the money laundering charges against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz died of a heart attack on Monday.

Rizwan went on long leave just before the formation of the PMLN-led coalition government and was later transferred from the office of FIA Lahore director last month. His name was also placed on the no-fly list.

According to a family member, Mr Rizwan, 47, suffered a cardiac arrest in the early hours on Monday and he was shifted to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His funeral will be held here on Tuesday (today).

Mr Rizwan belonged to the police service and had the rank of DIG. During his posting as FIA Lahore chief Mr Rizwan also probed into money laundering and market manipulation charges against sugar baron Jahangir Khan Tareen (who is currently supporting the ruling PML-N) and former federal industries minister Khusro Bakhtiar and his family members and two sugar mills of media houses.

The FIA investigators under Mr Rizwan had detected Rs110 billion earning by the sugar mafia during the PTI rule through ‘speculative pricing’. Further action in the sugar scam was halted due to political reasons.

In the money laundering probe, the investigation team under Mr Rizwan had detected 28 benami accounts of the Shehbaz family through which money laundering of over Rs14bn was committed during 2008-18. The money (Rs14bn) received from the accounts of low-wage employees by Shehbaz was transferred outside Pakistan via hundi/hawala networks, ultimately destined for beneficial use of his family members, according to the FIA.

Former prime minister Imran Khan expressed his condolences over the death of Mr Rizwan. “Saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Rizwan one of the most upright & courageous officers who withstood pressure while investigation & preparing the Rs 16 bn money laundering case against Crime Minister SS. My condolences & prayers go to his family,” Khan said in a tweet.

I wanted to make a separate thread on Dr. Rizwan's untimely death. For those who don't know Dr. Rizwan was the chief investigating officer heading the investigations of Shahbaz Sharif TT case and sugar mafia. The evidences gathered by Dr Rizwan through investigation on Shahbaz were rock solid and Shahbaz was certified for conviction but the date of his conviction had multiple changes and next one is on May-14.

Throughout the investigation there were threats against Dr Rizwan. During one of the hearings on Shahbaz's case there was a direct threat to Dr Rizwan that winds of time change, where there could be a time in future when PMLN will be in power and when his current work would come back to haunt him. This is from legal team of PMLN on record during hearing imagine what the guy would have been through in private.

As soon as PTI was out of power Dr Rizwan was immediately sent on a long leave and then transferred out of FIA to another division and cases which absolutely does not make sense. Dr Rizwan has spent years in building the case against Shahbaz and now that he is the PM, Dr Rizwan was separated from the case and he was not allowed to be present there during the conviction hearing. The investigating officer of the case has changed and I'm sure on May-14 the new officer would go to court saying that there isn't enough evidences found and Shahbaz would walk away scot free.

I'm disgusted at the justice system in this country. All power to select few. We as ordinary people are inferior to these royal families in power and its being drilled down in our minds that we should accept this inferiority and continue with our lives.

Ignore the ayaan case. It wasnt even suicide that guy was killed.

My instinct tells me This guy was also killed. There was also some NAB guy that killed. The mafia have to br taken down but Bajwa is in bed with them and the judges are scared of them.

There is nothing independent about Judiciary. They are brought for money and blackmailed . Have your forgotten Qayyum, Malik, kana etc. Forget about them and look at the LHC or Minullah asking for NSs life. Forget about even those, look at the SC opening at midnight for the mafia. Supreme courts job is to protect the constitution. Also sc has opened at night many times in the past in our history.

Yes but where was the SC when Gilani brought the Senate vote or Horse trading was taking place this time or journalists were being killed. Are they part of the constitution.

I am not sure what your point is, there is No need. It exists. PK needs a revolution and the day is getting closer. A corrupt elite has been caught with its pants down. A govt brought in to end Kaptaan is now has no way out. We have no govt except some looting.

SWABI: Former prime minister Imran Khan on Monday said that he will reveal the name of the poison which was used to induce a heart attack and kill the former director of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Dr Muhammad Rizwan.

Addressing a jalsa in Swabi, the PTI Chairman said the FIA has already been "destroyed" as the official — who was probing the alleged corruption cases against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his sons — was "killed while another officer was fighting for his life".

Imran Khan said: “When the PPP left government, Nawaz Sharif compromised with the MQM. After an operation was launched against the MQM, the party started targeting individual police personnel because of which Sindh police is still unable to become an independent department."

"There's a killer placed on top of the FIA. His end will be what the MQM did to the police after the operation," he added.
