"First, reach his level and become a cricketer like him, and then criticise Babar": Iftikhar Ahmed

Iftikhar Ahmed in an interview

"Criticising a player like Babar is just like committing a sin. Everyone knows that there is no other player like Babar in the world"

"See your level before commenting on Babar. First, reach his level and become a cricketer like him, and then criticise Babar.

"I believe criticising Babar is a sin"

That's a blasphemous statement.

Absolutely no need to say stupid stuff like this.

I feel like Babar is worshipped as some diety in some regions of Pakistan.

Ihsanullah doing sajda shukr when he got Babar’s wicket and now this

Hazard a guess why that could be?

And before you continue with the "region" thing

Earlier this week, Shadab Khan echoed similar thoughts about Babar and said that fans should understand the value of Pakistan captain and not unnecessarily criticise him.

“I think we are doing injustice with such a diamond. Pakistan has been blessed with such a big diamond. He [Babar] is even a bigger diamond than Kohinoor,” Shadab said.

“As a nation, we are not valuing Babar for what he is worth and are pressurising him. At the end of the day, he is also human. We should respect him the way the world respects him,” he added.

Iftikhar needs to improve his own peformance then comment on others!

I'm afraid yourself and PP have to take some blame for this.

Is Babar infallible?

Ridiculous statement.

Unfortunately we are a failed state and a failed cricket team due to this mindset.

Why have Pakistani players been brainwashed into thinking that Babar is the best player in the world and there is no one like him?

The level of delusion is hilarious. There are at least a dozen better players than Babar in world cricket.

Babar may not be the best batsman in the world and he has his own weaknesses. But he is till a gun batsman and he would walk into all teams and will be the first choice middle order batsman.

Some statements are made for the heck of it - gets reaction - the one above is one of them, the "kehnay mai kiya harj hai" type

Ifti hoping that Babar takes note of this statement and includes him in future series :)

No performances, so why not big the skipper up in the hope he likes it.

The amount of respect that Babar commands among the others players in Pakistan is unmatched to any other player in the World. Haven't seen even the Indian team mates going out of their way to praise Kohli all the time. There must be something special about Babar.

Completely agree. Also, Babar isn't even Pakistan's best player.

The cheerleading of Babar by some notable players in the Pakistan team is nothing short of cringeworthy. It's become a cult. Babar isn't untouchable, far from it. He shouldn't be in the T20I side and his captaincy is terrible.

I don't care if babar is great or mediocre/Average whatever you wanna call him . i won't judge him on his t20 performances ever but one thing where babar doesn't get enough credit that he is so fundamental to this change from Shahid Afridi Era to Actually Players with proper Technique like Abdullah shafique getting Deserving weightage
Now Fans do come to watch babar bat, he is a brand and that too of a good type for younger generations.

Calling Babar one of the best players is fine, but Iftikhar deserves to be criticized for this comedy statement:

“Everyone knows that there is no other player like Babar in the world"

Unfortunately he is not the only Pakistani player who believes and sells this lie.

Babar may or may not be the best player in world but one doesn't have to reach his level to criticize him. That's the stupidest thing to say.

Propaganda machines are working with ferocious speeds. Anyone who criticizes Babar is placed on unofficial banned list: i.e. Amir, Imad, etc.

Chacha is now a confirmed member of the squad. Well played.

It is scary how much power Babar enjoys without any significant achievement as captain.

Funny only the players in the squad are doing this boot licking seems like a requirement to stay within the team

Tbh Babar is a nice guy and I can understand why you would want to defend him if he has been good to you

Although I don’t think he should be the policy/decision maker of who plays and who doesn’t for Pakistan

Get the chapstick out Ifti.

Are we so lacking in talent in Pakistan that Babar, a very good cricketer but far from the ATG status his cringy social media fans and equally cringy PCB PR Department have elevated him to, is an untouchable figure ?

Babar is this generations Imran Khan. He doesn’t need to respond to narrow criticisms, his foot soldiers defend him with honour.

He carries the burden of millions, only the players are aware of the graft behind the scenes.

It’s easier to rally behind your captain compared to a thief who sold out.

I think there’s a middle ground here. Every player’s performance should be open to scrutiny. Criticism, when constructive, can be very beneficial.

However, I think lately, we’ve made an industry of continuously criticising Babar.

Look, I’m firmly against the “Babar can do no wrong”cult. If anything, I’m absolutely prepared to move on from him as white ball captain.

But the criticism needs to not go overboard. And it has done, which is why we get these cringe responses from Ifti etc.

In a strange sort of way, Babar is too nice.

I wish he had a bit of a tougher side to him on and off the field.

There's a competition amongst Pakistani players as to who becomes more cringe in praising statspadder Babar.

First tweets from Shaheen, Rauf, Shadab etc at similar time saying Babar is my captain. Then Shaheen, Shadab, Iftikhar -- all rivals in PSL, praising over the top in press conferences. Guys like M Haris tweeting it's an honour to play alongside Babar.

In reality Babar is the worst T20 batsman to play in WT20 (SR of 93 across 7 matches!!) and also in Peshawar zalmi top order. He's also abysmal as a captain

Pathetic boot licking by ifti.

So no one is allowed to criticise him until they reach his level. Nonsense

No he is not. He is very shrewd and clever sort of guy. He is typical nice on face but backstabber types.

Shaheen defends Babar in media talks but at the same time running agenda via his father in law to be the next captain.

Silly statement from him really.

Makes him look really childish and probably a statement that Babar probably doesn't want him to make.

In that case Amir won 2 ICC trophies.
Amir didnt bottle it vs India.

Ahmed Shehzad won the same 2 ICC trophies as well.
Tired of the narrative Amir won the 2009 and 17 trophies.
Gul, Razzaq in 09 and Junaid, Hasan in 17 were better than Amir. None of them have acted like prima donnas either.

And now Shan Masood - similar sentiments:

"We were ready to give our lives when Sarfaraz Ahmed was our captain, and now we are ready to give our lives for Babar Azam"

Aunty- “graaape””

Incredibly sub-optimal.

This ‘cult of Babar’ nonsense needs to stop. Joe Root didn’t lose respect when he was removed from captaincy. Alastair Cook didn’t lose respect when Eoin Morgan was made captain.

However, I’d like to see the context of the question asked, before we all jump on Shan’s back.

Running in and bowling with raw pace was never a problem for Haris Rauf. After all, he had done it all his life with the tape ball and replicated the ability at HBL Pakistan Super League franchise Lahore Qalandars’ trials.

But after proving his mettle as a Qalandars product at club level in Australia, the Big Bash League and the PSL and making his Pakistan debut, he eventually started struggling with his economy as a bowler.

Until October 2021, the right-armer was leaking runs at nearly nine per over in Twenty20 Internationals, but in the year and a half that followed, he brought his economy rate down to less than eight.

Haris’ transformation was evident during the 2021 T20 World Cup, in which he took eight wickets at an average of 21 while conceding 7.3 runs per over, which led Pakistan to the tournament’s semi-finals.

The 2021 T20 World Cup was also the first time Pakistan looked like a close-knit unit under their captain Babar Azam, who marshaled the side to the finals of the T20 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup in the year that followed, with Haris being one of the central figures in their journey in becoming one of the best white-ball sides in the world.

For Haris, the main man behind his emergence as ******tan’s main death bowler in the shorter formats is none other than Babar.

“I strongly believe that the improvement in my performance is all because of Babar Azam,” Haris told Dawn. “We played really good and exciting cricket in the last two years.

“In this period, we emerged as a good unit, especially in white-ball cricket, and the credit goes to our skipper Babar Azam, who trusted the abilities of players, which ultimately gave us the confidence.”

While Babar enjoys Haris’ respect as the leader of the group, the pacer has got a special place in his heart for fellow quick and Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi

His pairing with Shaheen has symbolised itself as Lahore Qalandars identity, with both bowlers staying associated with the franchise since the start of their PSL careers.

Even in the Pakistan shirt, Shaheen’s support has motivated Haris to do better.

“Shaheen Shah Afridi is a great support from the other end, he said. “We have a very strong bond, and it helps me to keep enhancing my bowling skills. “

Haris had to do without Shaheen after the latter was ruled out for nearly six months after picking up an injury during Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka in July. Shaheen was unavailable for the Asia Cup and the seven-match home T20I series against England before returning for the 2022 T20 World Cup, that too, only to walk off following an injury in the final.

In Shaheen’s absence, Haris said, he had to take the responsibility of leading the Pakistan attack. The extra bit of pressure, was a challenge Haris ensured only helped him to improve.

In the Asia Cup, Haris bagged eight victims at 19.12 and was the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. In the home T20 series against England he took as many wickets and topped the bowling charts.

“Shaheen wasn’t part of that series, so I was leading the bowling unit,” Haris noted about the England T20s. “..so I was extra responsible and managing my bowlers accordingly.

“It wasn’t easy to lead the bowling unit without him, but I was lucky enough that I took the advantage and learned this job from Shaheen.”

Haris and Shaheen were reunited before Pakistan kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign in Australia last year. The national side’s start in the showpiece was horrific as they lost against India and Zimbabwe in their first two matches.

Pakistan, however, bounced back to win the remaining matches of the group stages to eventually make it to the semi-finals, in which they beat New Zealand before losing to England in the final.

“That bad start was actually the start of our good end,” Haris said of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign. “The loss against Zimbabwe was a true wake-up call, and then everyone stood up to perform.”

Pakistan could have started with a win as well had it not been for Virat Kohli’s unbelievable show, that helped India recover from a difficult start to their chase to go on to win the match.

Kohli’s two sixes in the death overs against Haris proved crucial in turning the tide for India as the pacer saw the ball fly past the boundary at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“Well, the plan was simple; to deceive him with the variation, but he played it really well,” Haris said of his face-off with Kohli. “And I am saying this since the night that only a player like Kohli could hold his nerves and play that shot.”

Kohli’s innings was an example of the unforgivable nature of international cricket, which Haris believed a player needed to embrace to guarantee improvement.

“You learn every day, and I believe that when you get the experience, the responsibilities come to you, and there is no chance of making any mistake in competitive cricket,” he said. “So, to cope with these situations, you must keep yourself in challenging situations, and that’s the only way you can improve.”

One of the reasons Ifti gets persisted with and gets repicked, is because Pakistan don’t have a natural no.4.

However given his weaknesses against spin are now very public, it’s difficult to pick him for Pakistan right now.

No I think it’s because he is friends with Rizwan

He was nowhere in the team before Misbah took over

Tbf domestically he’s been incredible. If there’s a space in the team, it’s the domestic performances you’ll look at, to fill the void.

Who would you play at No.4?

I think it’s a problem position.

Never really rated this guy. Always knew he’s about 45 his real age and his reflexes are shot. Should stick to domestics

Perhaps. I also think that he’s had enough issues in picking the ball out of the spinners hand.

In fact it’s a wider problem with most Pakistan batsmen. The only ones that really play spin well are Azam and Shadab
