Leela Lal, an Indian-origin nurse, was beaten almost to death by a psychiatric patient at the Florida hospital where she worked​

"Essentially every bone in the victim's face is broken and the victim is likely to lose the use of both eyes," according to the affidavit.

"I couldn't recognize her," said Lal’s daughter Cindy. "Both eyes were swollen, she was intubated, her whole face on the right side was swollen, multiple fractures throughout her face, bleeding in the brain."

After the attack, Palm Beach County Deputy Sgt. Beth Newcomb testified that she observed Scantlebury saying, "Indians are bad" and "I just beat the (expletive) out of an Indian doctor."

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has added a “hate crime” charge to Scantlebury’s attempted second-degree murder charge.

Scantlebury managed to escape the hospital before he was caught while running on a road. His wife told the court Thursday that he had been acting paranoid for several days leading up to the attack.

I think this is present in most of the west. We have people in the UK suffering from depression, laziness, anger and other mental issues which were not as common 20 years ago. The US has a worse issue, millions take regular antidepressants and other drugs to cope with their lives. The drug manufacturers are making huge profits, the more you take the more you need these drugs. With rising costs, reduction in jobs, huge influx of illegal drugs such as cocaine, cheap alcohol etc this is only going to get worse.

This is a horrible attack, poor lady but hard to say if its racism or a lunatic attack. There should be security guards visible in such institutions.

Multiple factors contribute to racism. Most notably, the recent H1B debacle and Indian support for Israel have played a significant role. I observed a noticeable increase in racist attacks on Indians around that time. Another contributing factor is illegal immigration. There has been a rise in illegal immigration to the U.S., not just from India but from other countries as well.

I came across a study suggesting that when African Americans make up 10% of households in a wealthy neighborhood, affluent families tend to move away in large numbers. A similar demographic shift has been occurring in the U.S. Historically, before 1920, minorities made up about 14% of the population. However, strict immigration reforms in the 1920s reduced this percentage to around 6%. In 2023-2024, the minority population has risen above 10%, which appears to be a critical threshold.

H1B visa holders account for only 0.5% of available jobs in the U.S. While some IT sourcing companies have exploited the H1B system, other minority groups also exploit various loopholes. There is also a religious aspect to the issue. Unfortunately, Hinduism is often perceived negatively, with some churches and pastors actively contributing to this narrative.

Another factor is the rise of Jio and Reliance, which made cheap internet accessible to millions of Indians. Yes. It may not make native populations happy if Indians migrate in big numbers to different countries. On top of that, they don't integrate well. For example, here in Canada, Indians have been allegedly pooping in Wasaga beach (a beach in Canada); Indians are also being unethical in renting, hiring people etc.

Chinese people also spread but they don't normally make much problems. They stay low-profile and they integrate better. They also mind their own businesses unlike the Indians who are often nosy.

My observation is that Indians are quite happy to be second class citizens in a first world country so don't mind being treated as such, so for them racism is probably considered fairly normal. I think in India itself it is probably built in with the caste system.

Even if you look at posts on this site, Indians take pride that they are not hated as much as Pakistanis and Muslims and will brag about being better integrated. Or barely tolerated in reality. It is in someways admirable, in that it shows some humility Pakistanis could benefit from. But on the other hand it does make them look like toadies to some extent.

My observation is that Indians are quite happy to be second class citizens in a first world country so don't mind being treated as such, so for them racism is probably considered fairly normal. I think in India itself it is probably built in with the caste system.

I live in USA mate. I know plenty of Pakistanis, some good friends and even the few I don’t get along with is solely due to either they think I am a jerk or vice-versa nothing to do with nationality, religion etc.

Coming from India too we have no other option but to interact with people from all walks of life.

No! India is a different story, where if you're Muslim, you can't even buy a house in certain areas, US has equal housing no discrimination policy, and random lynchings are just part of the reality.

Anyone who wants to see a real tip should go to areas where white council estate chavs live or into any city centre on a Friday night.

When I did my rounds in psychiatric hospital, for paranoid patients, the hospital used to have different sections altogether with tight security. When I first went there to make case histories of paranoid patients, the environment felt more like a prison than like a hospital. At every few meters, there was security. You could heard the scream, banging the doors, walls from time to time.

You don't send a 67 year old nurse alone to those patients whom is without any shackle. This was an unfortunate event but many factors aided here too.

It is the same on twitter and other platforms where racists converge. Asian areas are very poor too and can be very messy but the focus on them is disproportionate.

I have never been to such areas. I have visited the UK a few times but mainly the big metro areas.
The picture you drew there is not very different from backwards hick southern redneck towns here in the states. You go to any country town in Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Arizona, etc and you are likely to have a similar experience (maybe a little more dangerous though since there are plenty of guns around these parts)

You would have visited the Asian areas I imagine, inner London or Birmingham will have very diverse communities, but even the smaller towns in those areas might be different. The further out you travel, you would probably see less and less diversity. I haven't been there but places like Wales, Merseyside and Cumbria for example. The poorer parts of town might resemble what you call white trash areas over in the US.
