Food for Thought: Do the gentleman's game also need Arab riches to reignite its lost glory?

It is an unorthodox topic but those having even a little interest in football would be better able to comprehend it. Manchester City was literally languishing in the EPL until Sheikh Mansour came and revived it. Infact, the Arab money turned City into a football giant. Same was the case with PSG and now New Castle observing some rise of late. Although no one can deny the great contributions of Roman Abrahamovuch in Chelsea's change of fortunes but one lesson that we could deduct from it is that sometimes money more outsiders help in the revival of a sport.

So being fed up as a fan with the monopoly, negative influence and bullying of BCCI of other boards into submission. Is it would be wise to let the Arab richies or Abrahamovich types tycoon to step in the domain of gentleman's game and purge it from all the ongoing impurities? 🤔

Not a bad idea.

Only way to break BCCI's petty monopoly is to introduce another financial powerhouse in cricket.

If Arabs or Chinese become interested in cricket, balance of power can shift.

You still haven't understood the economics of cricket, have you ? It's all about the Indian market. Replacing one billionaire with another is not going to solve that problem.

You still haven't understood the economics of cricket, have you ? It's all about the Indian market.

It's not all about the Indian market. That's your own delusion.

The reason why it may appear this way is because boards and ICC chase short-term profits over long-term vision.

Apply it to franchise cricket or may be in funding ICC so it could in actual be a global body rather than a board's B-team

If this is the case, then the change has to come from the ICC and the rest of the boards. Their attitude needs to change.

Instead everyone wants/expects BCCI to change. That is never going to happen. That is not how human nature works. The BCCI is getting what they want without any opposition. Now why would they change?

So, all protests, pressure tactics should be directed at the ICC and the rest of the boards. This way they are forced to see the light. This what will bring about real change. Instead of wasting time and energy at the BCCI.

Why would anyone give away free money to ICC? What is in it for the investor?
Simple, bag in the funds that normally BCCI devours. The broadcast deals itself are just humongous

And more importantly, Make Cricket great again lol

To develop and grow the game you need not only a large population, but also a large population with $$$ to spend on entertainment and the willingness to spend it.

Now where is that market in cricket?

Investors do not care about "noble" causes. They want returns on it or they need to be interested/passionate about it. I see neither with ME people.

Yep that is the all premise, Arabs never loved football until the glamours struck them and landed even CR7, Benzema Neymar etc in Saudi League.

Just imagine if Arabs, Russians or any other rich outsiders all of a sudden gets a free pass in cricket. Get a chance to play up with big teams more frequently starting from the T20 format. Then cricket like football could also witness the influence of outside money

Naah, Arabs don't give an f about football.

What will happen (much to most Pakistanis' annoyance) is that as the Indian economy keeps getting bigger, BCCI will keep getting stronger until there is eventually a 4-5 month IPL starting from late January and all other leagues owned by IPL. ILT20, CPL, MLC, SA20 already have IPL owners. English counties have minority IPL owners and I see them being majority in a few decades. BBL and maybe BPL, SL20 will also come in.

Instead of relying on Arab or Chinese elder brothers Pakistanis should look to improve their economy so that they can push back a bit.

Pakistan's pci is the same in $ terms in the last decade.

The Indian market is that market. All of the rise in salaries etc is fueled by the Indian market.

India already has a large population and as the economy grows, the population with $$$ grows as well. Ofc there is a long way to go to reach other sports but by mid century India should be a solid upper middle income country with 0.8+HDI, $10k+ pci, $12 trill + economy.

That's not true at all.

Unlike cricket, Arab locals have always loved football and play it regularly .. in the 1980s and 1990s, they were glued to their TV sets during World Cups. It is one of the most popular sports in the Gulf region and always has been.

The Indian market is already there. It has potential for exponential growth. No doubt about it. I think the IPL will add about 4-5 teams in the next 15 years or so. With potential room for more. One can imagine the $$$$ that will be involved in it. The IPL is already at what, $6 Billion/5yrs?

I do not see any other existing cricket market to match that. If the wish is to develop a brand new market, then that needs to start now for it come to fruition in 2-3 decades.

So until then, BCCI and the India market rules.

Currently, the ME unlike football is not into cricket. They need to be interested in it first. So things must start now for a robust ecosystem to be in place maybe in 20 years or so. Cannot be done overnight.

As of now, there's India, UK and Aus whose middle class are prepared to spend vast sums of money through cricket. Pakistan should have been there as well with their 200 million strong population but alas..

Not sure how much more you can grow in UK and Aus. The whole Pak. 200 million population potential, has just been that, potential. Pretty much nothing has come out of that market.

Right now, after Ind, UK and Aus, I think the largest revenue market is USA! I am sure it is the 4th largest revenue generator in cricket.

Is there any new market to tap?

It is your delusion. You need to have "eyeballs" and "viewership and following " to make any sport successful. You can pump in a trillion dollars in carrom board - it still will not be regular. The level of delusion is mind boggling !:qdkcheeky

I don't know why you guys thinking it to be so much difficult. It is not such a big deal but sure it will take it's time.

Have we all forgotten that last T20 WC happened in US and now a leg of CT is going to be in UAE. Even the craze of cricket in gulf especially UAE has been always high since Miandad days. So they like football just need to drop big bids and as countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar are vying to boost their tourism industry so this idea won't be bad for them.

And yep it will take time to gain new fan breeds but who can hold the existing ones even Indians from traveling to Arab countries for ICC tournaments. If football despite of great reservations could enjoy fifa WC in Qatar and SA in 2034 then why need cricket could be the next venture for them

Because the reality there is no viewership market and local participation in countries like Saudi, UAE etc. It still will be population from SC and more so Ind which will sustain any financial contribution from them and they know it as well.

But fans follow the action, no matter which country acts as host. Even indians

Yes, but there is no BCCI will allow its players to play in a foreign league unless they retire and dont play IPL. Why would any board kill its golden goose ? It will be like the myriad other franchise leagues. There is no way a foreign league can compete with IPL.

Pakistan should have hosted the entire CT in Pakistan without India. That would have been perfect way to beat any hegemony and show the world that cricket world can run without India. However, OP wants Arabs to do the dirty job for them will not work simply because unlike football cricket has no global following. Even if Arabs spend lots of money in cricket like they are doing in ILT20 they would like to sell it to Indian audience as that is where the money is.

You have to invest money in the game to increase the interest of the public in it. If cricketers start getting paid peanuts, people will stop considering going into cricket for profession.

Not possible financially for the ICC.

Jaane sab hai on PP, mante nahin.

Those are not Arabs watching those cricketmatches but desi diaspora who form the majority in the UAE.

Football is enjoyed by native Arabs.

Compare the UAE cricket team and the football team and see their compositions.

This tells us all we need to know about why everyone is cowering to BCCI. Also tells us why nothing will change any time soon.

When the BCCI refused to commit to playing, ICC instead of saying "ok, you lose" and moving on to getting the next team in line (SL) into the tournament, began this long and dragged out "negotiation" to get India in at all costs.

This was a valuable opportunity lost IMO, to set things in cricket in a different direction. A direction where the rest of the boards as well as the ICC themselves would recognize the value of self sufficiency and hard work. Something that would have put all of them in a better position going forward down the road.

But unfortunately, nothing happened. You have to take up and implement the solutions that are right in front of you. If you don't, then it is status quo. Nothing changes. That is what happened with the whole BCCI - CT stand off. Nothing changed.

Not only were the ICC and the boards unwilling to take steps to change things (during CT), even in this forum there was pretty much no traction for that as well. The focus on this forum was also about how to get India to play. No one wanted to discuss or even touch the topic about just replacing Ind with SL and move on. This would have solved things much earlier leading to a better planned tournament for the ICC and more importantly, the fans.

Opportunity lost. Status quo. Complaining about BCCI is just a waste of time as no one wants to do anything other than wishing/expecting the BCCI to change. Which is ridiculous.

Money solves all the problems??? Atleast in cricket it can. Arabs are not interested in cricket though.

I wonder why doesn't any other board do anything? Rather, they want others to do their dirty stuff.

Hilarious!

Had our country amounted to something instead of being run on beggar loans, had PSL gotten somewhere itd been an ideal time for us to approach Saudis and make us compete with the IPL. Or atleast earn more.

Those people would only enter the market because of the Indian market not as rivals to it.

So what you are proposing won't have any effect.

Yes, it would be Halal money unlike Haram Indian funds.

Let's just sell some PSL franchise to Saudis first and then they may take back the hundred and other franchises from IPL owners. Not sure about SA 20 but plenty to earn for Arab billionaires in the Hundred.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh should seek help from Arab countries for investment—there's nothing to feel embarrassed about in this.

@Rajdeep simple solution to get rid of same Judge same jury drama...atleast this way ICC won't a B-Team of some political board.

Also on question of market and interest. Yeah are important. But when the gulf money took over Football they just simply replaced the previous team owners and nothing much. So it's simple if they have the will

Arabs never loved football until the glamours struck them and landed even CR7, Benzema Neymar etc in Saudi League.
That's a wild assertion.

Football in arab world was already realized with BEIN Sports back in 2012. Market study at that time found substantial fanbase for EPL since inception in the 90s.

Take it easy on the frivolous proclamations.

Arabs always loved football hence why they are the best in Asia apart from Korea/Japan.

Only if Chinese population were interested in cricket! World cricket could've had a bit more balance. It is now 100% tilted toward Indian interests.

India can get away with their nonsense because SENA boards are naive cucks and they play along. If they don't play along, India can cry about racism and play victim. It works every time.

If China enters, India cannot play that game. :inti

Neither Arabs nor Chinese nor Americans are going to save Pakistan cricket by displacing Indian hegemony. In all likelihood they will link up with Indian companies if they have interest in cricket.

And the same is true of economy. No one is going to come and save the Pakistan economy and Pakistan becomes a thriving economy. Pakistan for the foreseeable future will remain a low growth poor country muddling along at 2-3% (compared to most poor countries who grow fast).

This has primarily got to do with the bad structure of the Pakistan economy as well as military dominance (higher military budget compared to what they can afford, creates instability which creates bad environment for growth).

Replied above. Neither Chinese nor Arabs nor Americans are coming to save Pakistan.

Pakistan should look to fix their economy and become the second most powerful board.

In all likelihood the gap will grow even further and Pakistan will become even bigger pariahs as the IPL expands to a 4-5 month thing, all the leagues become India owned etc.

Add to that 50% of possible workforce is confined within four boundaries of a conventional house: women.

The ensuing sickness of this cohort due to lack of physical movement, and associated mental illnesses further regresses productivity of male relatives.

It's a self-destructive society. Somehow branded as the purest.

Cricket as a sport does not have global, mainstream appeal like boxing, football, or MMA. Saudis, who are more interested in white-people sports anyway have nothing to gain by investing in cricket. Emiratis have already invested in ILT20.

As far as sponsorships are concerned, Aramco is already a major sponsor for ICC events and IPL.

Cricket does not just need wealthy people. Cricket needs large markets that can help it grow and thus far the ICC has been very poor on how they have developed the game in currently underserved markets. As noted in another thread and in many posts on this website, the ICC only sees "how can we wrangle more money out of India for our annual tournaments?"

Association football (which we call soccer here in the States) has steadily built up the game because they took the long, appropriate route of getting everyone bought in. I played soccer as a young boy even though I had no intent of ever becoming a professional in the sport-it was just a fun thing to do. It's grown here over time, the USA team is considered good, and it has a solid professional following here in the states because leadership decided to work at growing the game in America. It helps that it's cheap in terms of equipment compared with cricket-all you need is a ball, some sneakers/tennis shoes, and to have clothes you can run around it. If you want to do a more organized game like a soccer league then you have uniforms which can be quite affordable too. The same has applied to basketball which has become a popular sport in Europe, East Asia, as well as the United States.

Where's the strategic thinking to get more everyday Americans involved in cricket? There are 200k people who play in cricket leagues in the USA. Has any thought been given to focusing MLC games in cities with existing fan bases? There is a huge desi community in South Florida yet no matches are played there. I hear one of the IPL owners is building a stadium for MI New York. I might disagree with Indians on many things but that's a really good decision-now you have a permanent venue to hold cricket matches. Where is the work by USA cricket and the ICC to get USA cricket more matches against Test sides? How about first class tours for the younger players? Steven Taylor and Aaron Jones were basically the products of years of hard work between WICB developing them initially and the slow professionalization of the side. Yet despite being offered many opportunities to get publicity between Netflix offering to send a shadow to cover the USA team post the Pakistan win and Good Morning America offering them the chance to have a full TV interview prior to their match vs India-nothing was done! It was free publicity and yet USA cricket turned that down!

We've talked about growing the game in China. That would be a very positive step forward but ICC is doing nothing to grow it. . Work to grow the game in the Netherlands, it's already got an established cricket team and that's a decent market.

If you're going to take all this money from India (and to a lesser extent Pakistan, UK, Australia, and Bangladesh), then some ROI needs to be gained in terms of cricketing growth in nations not currently playing the game but could be brought into the game.

Afghanistan and Ireland were good adds to be sure, but Afghanistan still can't play international matches at home and Ireland is still a bit of a smaller market for a Test Nation. USA is where Afghanistan was around 10 years ago and I question if the ICC is going to do the work-so far they've just seen this market as a gate revenue opportunity and don't seem interested in truly gaining a non-desi following for cricket in America.

Top post.

There is no initiative from ICC to grow the game. Focus seems to be on Indian market only.

ICC needs to diversify. ICC is sadly missing sharp and bold leadership.

Because that is the largest market and is growing.

Australia/UK are first world countries with low growth rates plus cricket isn't even that big there.

NZ population too low and again niche sport.

Cricket is only big in South Asia and India is the fastest growing as well as most populous and richest of all of them.

And as we've seen in recent times, it is dangerous for a sport to be dependent on a single market when it's intended to be a global game. We get it, only we Americans watch American football for the most part. But it's our game and our attempts at exporting it have been restricted to mostly NFL games in other countries or college games overseas. We're not trying to make American football something it is not-it's our game and will always be our game.

You can't have a unipolar market in cricket. If you don't get more countries involved in the game cricket will die.

Great analysis...let me it a global sport rather than a political gimmick for a certain country

This will work,

If Arab investment in cricket is managed by Indian cricket administrators who are able to sell the product to Indian cricket audience.

Arab riches + Indian administrators + Indian audiance = BCCI's defeat.

Similar to nfl then, cricket will become an indian sport.

Thing is India is a 4+ trillion economy growing at 6-7%. By mid century it will be a 15+ trillion economy and that would be more than enough to sustain cricket.

Pakistani fans' issue is not that cricket is becoming unipolar. It's that that pole is India.

But then Pakistan have issue with anything where India succeeds as it makes their shortcomings more apparent. That is normal human behaviour.

I mean, Pakistan had an issue with India's moon mission when they have absolutely nothing to do with it.

I don't think they ever had one.

Everyone around the world angry on this...and this is nothing as many ICC events to follow in India AGAIN in next 10 years...high time for some foreign investment to save the game of cricket

Pakistanis in every fight ever,

Wait, let me call my American friends, they will show you!
Wait, let me call my Chinese friends, they will show you!
Wait, let me call my Turkish friends, they will show you!
Wait, let me call my Arab friends, they will show you

So finally some sanity prevailing. The sooner the world realize, the better for cricket

Monopoly in any sport is hazardous. Just imagine Ambani taking over IPL by buying all franchises except CSK...There is a reason why spending cap exists in IPL....BCCI monopoly in cricket is exactly the same
What part is denoting sanity?
