Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has questioned the absence of his players on the shortlist for the 2019 Best Fifa Men's Player award.

Tottenham's Harry Kane and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are among the 10 nominated men.

City won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup last season.

"Maybe we have to win five or six or get 250 points to be considered next season," said Guardiola.

"I don't think there is one player who had a better season than Bernardo Silva last season, even winning [the Nations League] with Portugal.

"These awards are normally when you win the Champions League. We were in the last stages and the other competitions do not count, are not important."

Guardiola's side also won the 2018 Community Shield but were eliminated by Spurs in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

No Manchester City player has ever won the PFA Player of the Year award, even though the team have won the Premier League in four of the past eight seasons.

In 2011-12, Arsenal's Robin van Persie was the player of the season, two years later Liverpool's Luis Suarez picked up the prize, with Salah and Van Dijk winning in 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively.

"In eight years, winning four times the Premier League is quite good," added Guardiola. "And never one player - not David [Silva], not Vincent [Kompany], not Yaya [Toure] - won, not even suggested.

"Huge respect for Mohamed Salah, but Kevin de Bryune that season when we made 100 points [in 2017-18] was above and beyond the normal situations.

"I cannot imagine Real Madrid and Barcelona winning four titles and not one single player being there."

Six City players were included in the 2018-19 PFA Team of the Year - goalkeeper Ederson, defender Aymeric Laporte, midfielders Fernandinho and Bernardo Silva and forwards Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling.

The shortlist for the Best Fifa Men's Player was selected by a panel of former players and managers, and the result will be announced at an event in Milan on 23 September, following a public vote.

It's crazy that Sterling doesn't get nominated but Ronaldo and De Ligt do. Or even the Hazard nomination makes no sense ahead of Sterling.

In any case, I would say Messi and Van Dijk are the two favorites. Both of them had insane season and their clubs won something.

Ronaldo/Messi better not win! has to be someone different [hint hint]

Lewandowski is the clear winner here, he's had an amazing 2020. Anything else makes this award a total farce. They already robbed him when they cancelled the Ballon d'Or this year

Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski won the best men's player at the Best Fifa Football Awards in Zurich, beating last year's winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the top prize.

The Poland striker scored 55 goals in just 47 games last season as he helped German giants Bayern to a treble.

Lewandowski, 32, finished as the top scorer in the league, cup and Champions League.

There was more success for Bayern Munich as Manuel Neuer won the best men's goalkeeper award, beating Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak and Liverpool's Alisson to the recognition.

The Germany international conceded just 31 goals in 33 games for Bayern in the Bundesliga and made a number of crucial saves in the Champions League knockout stages to help his side get to the final.

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min won the Puskas award for the best goal scored with his superb solo effort against Burnley last year.

The South Korea international ran from one box to the other, cutting through the Clarets defence before finishing.

"It was so nice," said Son. "When I got the ball, I tried to pass, received it in my own box, couldn't find any option and started to dribble, and after two seconds was in front of the goal - it was such a surprise, such a beautiful goal."

The award, first established in 2009, is named after former Real Madrid striker Ferenc Puskas.

Chelsea duo N'Golo Kante and Jorginho will battle it out with Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski for The Best FIFA men's player award for 2021, while Thomas Tuchel and women's counterpart Emma Hayes have been nominated for the coaching awards.

The men's coaching award will be contested by Tuchel, Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola, new Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, Italy's Roberto Mancini, Germany's Hansi Flick, Diego Simeone and Lionel Scaloni.

Hayes has been shortlisted for the women's prize along with England boss Sarina Wiegman, Lluis Cortes, Peter Gerhardsson and Beverly Priestman.

Two expert panels - one each for the men's and women's games - have also identified candidates for the best goalkeeper awards, with Alisson Becker, Mendy and Kasper Schmeichel flying the flag for the Premier League along with Italy star Gianluigi Donnarumma and Germany's Manuel Neuer, while Chelsea's Berger will go head to head with Christiane Endler, Stephanie Labbe, Hedvig Lindahl and Alyssa Naeher.

Argentina and Paris St-Germain forward Lionel Messi has been named men's player of the year at the 2022 Best Fifa Awards.

The 35-year-old beat French forwards Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema to the prize.

Messi captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, and scored 27 goals in 49 games for club and country in 2021-22.

Barcelona's Alexia Putellas was named women's player of the year.

Wiegman and Putellas win major women's honours
Messi, who won the award for a second time, said: "It's amazing. It's been a tremendous year and it's an honour for me to be here and win this award. Without my team-mates I wouldn't be here.

"I achieved the dream I had been hoping for for so long. Very few people can achieve that and I have been lucky to do so."

At the ceremony in Paris, Lionel Scaloni, who led Argentina to their third World Cup title, was named men's coach of the year.

Scaloni beat Pep Guardiola - who guided Manchester City to a sixth Premier League title - and Real Madrid's Champions League-winning boss Carlo Ancelotti to the honour.

England manager Sarina Wiegman was named women's coach of the year after leading the Lionesses to European Championship glory on home soil last year, the team's first major trophy.

Aston Villa and Argentina's Emiliano Martinez was recognised as the best men's goalkeeper, while England's Mary Earps won the women's award.

Martinez, 30, helped his country win the World Cup, saving four penalties along the way including in the shootout victory against France in the final.

Earps, who plays for Manchester United in the Women's Super League, started all six of England's games at Euro 2022 as they won the competition.

How Martinez became world's best goalkeeper
Amputee footballer Marcin Oleksy, of Polish side Warta Poznan, won the Fifa Puskas award for the best goal of the year. He sent a stunning overhead volley against Stal Rzeszow flying into the back of the net with the help of his crutches.

Recipient of the fair play award was Luka Lochoshvili, who held the tongue of his opponent, Georg Teigl, to save his life after the midfielder had fallen unconscious.

Fifpro men's world XI: Thibaut Courtois; Achraf Hakimi, Virgil van Dijk, Joao Cancelo; Kevin De Bruyne, Luka Modric, Casemiro; Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe.

Argentina and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has won the Men's Ballon d'Or for an eighth time.

The 36-year-old was recognised at the ceremony in Paris after helping his country win the World Cup in Qatar last year.

England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham won the Kopa Trophy for the world's best player aged under 21.

Messi won his record-extending Ballon d'Or award ahead of Manchester City forward Erling Haaland.

France forward Kylian Mbappe - who became just the second man to score a World Cup final hat-trick in the 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Argentina - finished third.

"It's nice to be here once more to enjoy this moment," Messi said. "To be able to win the World Cup and achieve my dream."

The former Barcelona and Paris St-Germain star added: "I couldn't imagine having the career I've had and everything I've achieved, the fortune I've had to be part of the best team in history.

"All of them [Ballon d'Or awards] are special for different reasons."

Martinez recognised as world's best goalkeeper

Argentina World Cup winner and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez won the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper in the world.

Martinez won the Golden Glove in Qatar, saving a spot-kick from Kingsley Coman in the penalty shootout win against France in the final.

He also helped Aston Villa finish seventh in the Premier League and secure a place in the Europa Conference League.

However, Martinez was jeered by some of the crowd at the Paris ceremony. The goalkeeper was criticised for this celebration after winning the World Cup against France last year.

Manchester City win club of year award

Manchester City were named the club of the year at the awards for the second year running.

Pep Guardiola's side became only the second English team to win the Treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season.

They had seven players shortlisted for the men's Ballon d'Or award.

Vinicius Jr recognised as he vows to fight against racism

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr received the Socrates Award for his contribution off the field and vowed to keep speaking out against racism in world football.

Vinicius has been the target of racist abuse regularly in La Liga games for the past two seasons.

He was recognised for starting a foundation that is building schools in impoverished areas and investing in education in Brazil.

"I will remain strong in the fight against racism," said the Brazilian. "It is a very sad thing to talk about racism nowadays, but we have to continue in the fight so that people suffer less."

Former England and Manchester United midfielder presented the men's Ballon d'Or to Messi, but before announcing the winner he paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton.

The England World Cup winner died at the age of 86 earlier this month.

"I probably don't have to tell this room how special Sir Bobby was to the world of football," Beckham said.

"He was respected on the field for what he won but was respected even more off the field for what he stood for.

"He will be missed. When we looked up into the stands he would always be there cheering us on.

"He started it off for me. If it was not for Sir Bobby turning around to Manchester United and saying 'watch this young man' I probably would not have played for Manchester United.

"I owe him everything."

Foden named PFA player of year, Palmer young player

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has won the Professional Footballers' Association men's player of the year award, while Chelsea winger Cole Palmer was named young player of the year.

It is the first time since the 2009-10 campaign that both men's awards have gone to English players.

Wayne Rooney and James Milner won the player and young player of the year prizes respectively for that season.

"To win this award is something very special and it is one that I am very proud of and grateful for," said Foden.

"To be recognised this way by your fellow professionals means everything and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me.

"Last season was another very special one for everyone at the club, but now all our focus is concentrated on trying to achieve more success this term."

Foden scored 19 goals in 35 top-flight appearances in 2023-24 as City won a historic fourth successive Premier League, and - aged 23 - he became the youngest player to have won six league titles.

This is the first time the Stockport-born playmaker has been the PFA's player of the year, having twice been selected as the best young player.

He also won the 2023-24 Premier League player of the season award and was named the Football Writers' Association (FWA) footballer of the year.

Foden beat his City team-mates Erling Haaland, who won the award last year, and Rodri, as well as Chelsea's Palmer, Arsenal's Martin Odegaard and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins who were on the shortlist.

Haaland and Rodri nominated for Fifa men's award

Manchester City's Rodri and Erling Haaland are the sole nominees from the Premier League in the best male player category at the 2024 Fifa Best Awards.

The pair have been recognised after City became the first team in English top-flight history to win four league titles in a row.

Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham is one of 11 nominees for the prize, which is dominated by Spain-based players.

Lionel Messi, the 2023 winner, is the only player nominated for the award to play outside of Europe.

Ballon d'Or winner Rodri is a leading contender for the prize but faces competition from Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr, who finished runner-up to the Spaniard in the voting in October.

Bellingham, 21, who finished third in the Ballon d'Or voting, will be hoping to become the first male English player to win the Fifa prize.

The award will be decided by an equally weighted split between fans, current captains and coaches of all women's and men's national teams, and media representatives.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who won coach of the year in 2023, is again nominated, alongside Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti, Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni and Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.

Arsenal's David Raya, Manchester City's Ederson and Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez have been nominated for the goalkeeper of the year award.

Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin, Paris St-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma, AC Milan's Mike Maignan and Athletic Bilbao's Unai Simon make up the rest of the nominees.

Vinicius Jr named Fifa Best men's player of the year

Real Madrid and Brazil winger Vinicius Jr has been named the men's player of the year at the Fifa Best Awards.

The 24-year-old and his club boycotted the recent Ballon d'Or awards after missing out to Manchester City's Rodri - but he picked up this prize in Doha, Qatar.

Vinicius played a key role in Real's Champions League and La Liga-winning campaign in 2023-24, scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists.

Earlier in the ceremony, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati was named the women's player of the year for the second year in a row.

This was the first time Vinicius has won the award and capped a happier finish to the season than October's Ballon d'Or boycott.

The Ballon d'Or and Fifa Best awards are the two most prestigious in football.

This was Vinicius' first Fifa prize, with Lionel Messi winning the previous two and Robert Lewandowski the two before that.
