India captain Virat Kohli has overtaken Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi in Forbes’ list of the most valuable athletes.

Forbes assesses the ‘brand value’ of athletes by calculating their earnings – excluding salary and bonus fees from their sport – and all investment income.

The most recognisable sportsman in India and one of the best players in the world, Kohli is also making an impact financially and is now in the top ten most valuable athletes, according to Forbes.

The 28-year-old has shot up the list into seventh with a valuation of $14.5million – which puts him ahead of Ballon d’Or winner Messi, golfer Rory McIlroy and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.

Forbes TOP 10 most valuable athletes (based on brand value)
  1. Roger Federer $37.2m
  2. LeBron James $33.4m
  3. Usain Bolt $27m
  4. Cristiano Ronaldo $21.5m
  5. Phil Mickelson £19.6m
  6. Tiger Woods $16.6m
  7. Virat Kohli $14.5m
  8. Rory McIlroy $13.6m
  9. Lionel Messi $13.5m
  10. Stephen Curry $13.4m
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Cristiano Ronaldo, Usain Bolt, LeBron James also make the top ten while Wimbledon champion Roger Federer is at No.1 with a valuation of $37.2m.

Kohli has been in sensational form over the past two years and scored his 31st one-day international hundred in Sunday’s game against New Zealand.

Surpassing Ricky Ponting’s tally of 30, Kohli now has record-holder Sachin Tendulkar (49) firmly in his sights. The Indian is also the highest runscorer in ODI’s this year.

No way above Stephen Curry. Stephen curry is the next best thing after Jordan, Kobe, Lebron. Surprised that a Us basket ball player like Stephen curry isn't higher than Virat

Well done.

What if Messi was from India? Would he have topped the list?

Yes, because we obviously get our share of the money in our individual bank accounts.

But it's still great knowing that Virat is ranked above an overly rated footballer who has demented fans because he looks great on the pitch even though he can't score important goals when the going gets tough.

Its calculated by taking an average of the brand advertising earning (not match fees and contract fees) of the top 10 players of the sport and subtracting it from the players fees.

Being from India would not have helped Messi since football is already a global sport, and the average advertising earning of a top 10 football player is already very high. He would have earned more due to higher earnings from the Indian market, but would not be world no.1. Lets assume that
1. ALL of Kohli's earnings are only from the Indian market (which it is not, probably 80-90% is)
2. Currently 0 of Messi's earnings are from India (which is also not true)
3. Messi would have been able to add to his earning exactly what Kohli has right now.

So has Messi been Indian his total earnings would have been $28mn. Now given that not all Kohli's earnings are from India, and that Messi already has some earnings from India, we can assume that Messi's total earnings would be reduced by at least $1mn. So had Messi been Indian, he would have been no.4

But it's still great knowing that Virat is ranked above an overly rated bum who has demented fans because he looks great on the pitch even though he can't score important goals when the going gets tough.

You don't like Messi? Why?

Um what? Unless you are sarcastic, this is a ridiculous statement. Coming from a Brummie and possibly a blues supported its kinda expected though.

For clarification, I believe Ronaldo is greater than Messi due to his overall game and him being able to do things on both sides of a pitch. But even Ronaldo cannot do things Messi does simply as a striker.

Well, what you have calculated there is simple maths, but even then Messi would have been no.3 and not no.4 as Usain Bolt at no.3 is worth 27.

What I was hinting to was that to match value of a footballer the indian market would have increased their sponsor costs, say double it at least and then you have the rest of the world. If Messi was from India, he could have been even bigger in middle east, UK and USA because of the indian bussinesses there.

He choked in the WC final and has a crap record in the KO stages of the UCL. The guy is all style and no result, basically footballs version of Umar Akmal. And sidlicious I don't support the blues and have no idea how that is relevant.

Virat Kohli is mentally stronger then Messi as well like way stronger then that heartless footballer, so that also justifies this ranking. Virat is also better at his sport then Messi.

lol. take it easy. no need to get to personal. was just taking the Mickey out of a team that will be relegated to league one. And its a fair assumption that at least 33% of Brummies would support the blues.

Messi probably loses some potential income due to his lack of English. Just like tennis players, and why they all learn English. It's essential for marketing an individual.

He deserves every single bit of that money. I haven't seen a guy dominate a sport like this since Jahangir and Jansher Khan. Maybe Federer but even he had competition in Nadal and Djoko.

Bad troll. One is widely regarded as the GOAT of the most popular sport in the world and the other is just another great player at a sport followed by about 13 countries.

Messi is not yet the GOAT. That will be Maradona.

Messi can stake claim if he manages to lead Argentina to a World Cup or Copa America title

What!? Did you just mentioned Messi and Umar Akmal in the same sentence.

Messi is already regarded by most football pundits, explayers, gurus, analysts, etc to be better than Ronaldo. So I guess when it comes to their opinion versus yours, their opinion has more weightage.
