In the 2020/21 season, Ole led Man United to a very good 2nd place, but the wheels fell off the following season when Ole+Rangnick led Man United to 6th place with their worst ever points total (58).

In the summer of 2022, Erik ten Hag comes into pick up the pieces, spending £210m to bring in players like Antony, Casemiro and Lisandro.

His 1st season was generally a successful one on paper. Despite some high-profile losses (4-0 to Brentford, 6-3 to Man City, 7-0 to Liverpool) and some high-profile decisions (phasing out Ronaldo), he led United to a 3rd place finish, a League Cup trophy and an FA Cup final.

This past summer, he spends another £180m on the likes of Hojlund, Onana and Mount, as many expect them to kick on and challenge for the title. However, once again, it looks like the wheels have fallen off.

They currently sit 8th in the table, with 6 wins and 5 losses from their 11 games, looking like a team with no confidence, no plan, no structure, no style, no penetration in attack and leaking goals like a dodgy tap.

Is Erik ten Hag to blame here? Or are the problems bigger than him? Or both?

Discuss and vote.

As a somewhat rival I want him to stay in the job as I don't think he's doing a good job at this moment

Having said that I don't think he has been helped either, Man Utd are a mess of a club in terms of organisational structure. They are ran terribly and without a single purpose

Though he shoulders some of that blame, Rangnick was meant to remain as a consultant to oversee the football structure and implement that, yet Ten Hag wanted complete control and he got rid of him

In addition the signings that have been made are the players he has wanted and they are players he's either managed before or he has seen them in the Eredivisie, if those signings don't work out then he has to take some responsibility for it

Getting rid of him without addressing the root cause won't really change anything so they may as well keep him as could turn things around

Erik ten Hag has lost elements of Man Utd dressing room as his style and treatment of Jadon Sancho questioned

Erik ten Hag has lost elements of the dressing room at Manchester United, with players questioning his playing style and treatment of Jadon Sancho, according to Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol.

A group of players is becoming disenchanted with the Dutchman after United slumped to an abject 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday - their 10th loss of the season in all competitions.

One source has claimed Ten Hag has lost 50 per cent of the dressing room, with his refusal to act on concerns voiced by United's players and the continued exile of Sancho cited as factors.

"We should make it clear that it's very easy to kick a club when they're down. It's easy to kick Erik ten Hag when he's down. It's really easy to say he's lost the dressing room and that the players are not playing for him," chief reporter Solhekol said.

"My information is that some of the players are confused with what is happening. He has lost elements of the dressing room. One source tells me that he's lost about 50 per cent of the dressing room.

"Quite a few players are unhappy with the style of play, they also feel that they're training too hard and that they're running too much during training. I was told that the players don't know what they're running for.

"Also, some senior players have spoken to Erik ten Hag about where they feel the club is going wrong. They've spoken to him about their other experiences of playing for big clubs, and they feel that the manager should be a little bit more touchy-feely.

"They feel his man-management could be a little bit better, but Erik ten Hag is the boss and he's the one who calls the shots. He is not for turning. He is going to do things his way.

"I've also been told that a few of the players believe that he is too set in his ways and he's too robotic."

Ten Hag has also lost support in the United dressing room over the ongoing stand-off with Sancho, who has not featured for the club since August after declaring on social media he has "been a scapegoat for a long time".

"A few of the players are also unhappy at how Jadon Sancho has been treated," Solhekol added. "He's got people in the dressing room who are close to him and he's been totally frozen out because he's refused to apologise to Erik ten Hag.

"He's training with the kids and he's eating on his own. Quite a few of the players feel like that has gone too far. There's always unhappy people in a dressing room, but when you're losing games, there are even more of them."

Ten Hag has been a fraud so far but you can bring in Pep and these overrated trash players would throw him under the bus too. Before I get rid of Ten Hag, I would get rid of losers like Trashford. I can’t stand that overrated Rashford.

Erik ten Hag has urged Manchester United's hierarchy to trust him to return the club to their former glories.

It comes after Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Newcastle, their 10th loss in 21 games this season.

There have also been claims of unrest behind the scenes, with some players reported to be unhappy with Ten Hag, or his training and tactical methods.

On Tuesday, the club reacted furiously at not being given the right of reply to these claims and excluded representatives of four media organisations, including senior Premier League broadcasting partner Sky, from their scheduled news conference to preview Wednesday's league match at Old Trafford against Chelsea.

Questions have been levelled at Ten Hag, whose side are seventh in the Premier League, five points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, are out of the EFL Cup and bottom of their Champions League group.

Yet, after 10 years without a title challenge following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, Ten Hag is adamant he is the right man to deliver sustained success.

United finished third last season after Ten Hag's arrival and won the EFL Cup, their first trophy in six years.

"I know we will get there where we want to be," he told journalists on Tuesday. "Because? See my record. Everywhere where I was, every season, I got my targets.

"If we stick together, stick to the plan and the strategy, we will get where we want to be."

Erik ten Hag: Man Utd manager dismisses reports of dressing room unrest after Newcastle defeat

Erik ten Hag has dismissed reports that some Manchester United players have lost faith in his management.

It was reported on Monday that a number of United players have become disenfranchised with the Dutchman, with his playing style and treatment of Jadon Sancho seen as issues.

In the wake of Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle, one source claimed that 50 per cent of the dressing room has turned against Ten Hag, but the manager pointed to the draw away to Galatasaray and win at Everton last month as evidence that those reports are untrue.

Asked whether there is disorder among his squad, Ten Hag - who was speaking ahead of Wednesday's Premier League game at home to Chelsea - said: "Not in the dressing room. Of course there are a lot of rumours but it is not that we get distracted by it.

"We are on a journey. We know we are in transition but we are in the right direction.

"We construct a team, develop it, the team is progressing, young players are coming in and you see the potential of how they can contribute to a successful Manchester United team for the future."

Ten Hag added: "We had a week or two of good performances and one bad performance. The team is in a good direction. We played very good football, scored very good goals against Galatasaray and Everton.

"Against Newcastle, we didn't play great. We're not happy with that performance but we stayed in the game and had two good opportunities to get a point.

"With a little bit more determination we could have taken something."

Pressed on whether he still has the backing of his players, Ten Hag insisted: "Yes, I am sure."

The manager then pointed to several tight wins earlier in the season, saying: "You can see for instance the comeback against Brentford, the Burnley game, the Fulham game.

"Every time the team is there, showed great character, great determination, resilience, so we are together.

"You can't play such great football as we did recently without unity."

Erik ten Hag: Friends tried to talk Manchester United boss out of taking 'impossible' job

Erik ten Hag said friends tried to talk him out of taking over as Manchester United manager because they thought he faced an "impossible job".

The Dutchman left Ajax to take over at Old Trafford in 2022 and has been under pressure in his second season.

Ten Hag told fanzine United We Stand he was warned how tough life would be.

"Everyone was telling me 'You can't succeed in that job'. They said it was impossible. Me? I wanted the challenge," the 53-year-old said.

In his first season in English football, former Bayern Munich youth boss Ten Hag ended United's six-year wait for a trophy when they beat Newcastle in the EFL Cup final.

However, the Red Devils are way off the pace of leaders Arsenal in the Premier League table and are bottom of their Uefa Champions League group with one match left to play.

They have not seriously challenged for the Premier League or the Champions League since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

Ten Hag is the sixth man - after David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick - to try to bring success back to the club.

"I knew it wouldn't be easy, but it was such a great club with such a great fanbase," Ten Hag added.

"People love Man Utd, or they are against Man Utd. I like clubs like this. Ajax was like this."

United's 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Wednesday has provided Ten Hag with some respite from the increasing pressure he is facing.

He denied earlier this week there were rifts in his squad, although, evidently, Jadon Sancho's continuing exile means there is at least one player with whom the Dutchman has no working relationship.

However, despite the financial impact of freezing out a player who cost United £74m when they bought him from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, Ten Hag insisted he stands by his treatment of the England international.

With an announcement about Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS Group purchasing a 25% stake in the club believed to be imminent, fresh impetus could be around the corner for the Red Devils.

But the deal is unlikely to be concluded quickly enough to have a significant impact on the club's January transfer window spending, and Ten Hag doesn't expect to do much business.

"I don't think [we will spend a lot]," he said.

"As a club, you have to look for improvements, so if you can find better and it's realistic financially and with Financial Fair Play, the club has to go with it.

"But most of the time you don't attract the best players in the winter."

Chelsea result should have given him some breathing space. A good result against Liverpool would be a huge boost for him to take hold of his job at Manchester United for the next few weeks at least.

After a great result against Chelsea mid-weak, this loss against Bournemouth will surely be a massive blow for ten Hag as his position as the manager of Manchester United would again be in question.

Bayern (who got battered today) and then Liverpool up next

Think it's West Ham and Villa after that, so a tough run of fixtures coming

He'd do well to still be in a job come January

This is what Eric Ten Hag had to say after today's loss against Bournemouth.

“I’ve to take responsibility for it. We are really inconsistent”.

“I understand fans are disappointed, frustrated. We all are but we should do better and we have show it every game, not to have so big levels from one game to another”.

Manchester United must stick with manager Erik ten Hag - sacking him would solve nothing, says Gary Neville

Scott McTominay: Man Utd midfielder says players are 'firmly behind' Erik ten Hag

It has been "toxic at times" at Manchester United under former managers but the players are "firmly behind" Erik ten Hag, says midfielder Scott McTominay.

Saturday's 3-0 Premier League loss to Bournemouth was their 11th defeat in 23 games in all competitions this season.

They must beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday to have any chance of staying in the Champions League.

"It is the players' responsibility, first and foremost," McTominay said.

"We have had many amazing players and right now we are at the stage where we have big characters in the dressing room.

"It is not just a case of like [with] some of the other managers where it has been a little bit toxic at times - the boys are firmly behind the manager.

"We've got amazing coaching staff. We just want to do well for the football club and it's as simple as that."

Midfielder McTominay, 27, made his Manchester United debut in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

Last week, Ten Hag, in his second season at Old Trafford, dismissed suggestions he has a split dressing room, saying he and his squad are "together".

The reigns of predecessors David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as well as interim boss Ralf Rangnick, were all plagued, to varying extents, by rumours of player unrest.

In an interview in September, Solskjaer criticised the behaviour of some players during his time in charge.

United are sixth in the Premier League and bottom of their Champions League group, needing to beat Bayern and relying on other results going their way to qualify for the last 16.

"We are inconsistent as a team, we have not been naive to that," McTominay added.

"We have spoken with the coaching staff about it. The schedule has been relentless, but we can't use that as an excuse. As a group we have to come together and find out the answers to that.

"In the Premier League, every team is super athletic, every team in the Champions League can run, we need to match that and more when you play for this club.

"The manager can't do too much from the sidelines, it needs to come from the players."

Ten Hag, meanwhile, pointed to injury issues as one of the reasons behind his side's inconsistencies compared with last season's encouraging third-placed finish.

"We had a regular team [last season], not so many changes, especially in our backline - we had a regular formation and that helps you," the Dutchman said.

"When we get back to a regular base, we will play better and there is a better chance you are consistent.

"I know this team can perform at really high levels. It is not like we did it three months ago - no, we did it last week. It starts with the right attitude."

Technically yes. He was brought into to implement Ajax style of football. He hasn’t done that and has even admitted he can’t. He has also wasted 400 million doing so, terrible recruitment.

If you could identify a style or process you could argue keeping him. But you can’t. Even last season was very overrated it was ugly football with low goal difference. At no point has it looked like he’s going to transform into the attacking side to actually challenge for the title.

It’s more he’s just bought expensive quality defenders to keep goals down and win that way.

Klopp showed signs of a style of play even starting off. Arteta wasn’t given a huge budget until he’d proved himself and when he did get money, he is playing attractive football with Arsenal. Ten Hag literally was thrown money at and yet still plays like this.

Though in actuality it will be difficult to sack manager now. Not many options, and the new manager will have to inherit the problem of £400 million worth of mostly not good enough players.

Eric Ten Hag says that he is indifferent to being sacked as manager. And is optimistic regarding Manchester United performances in future.

A desperate Ten Hag fighting for survival - having a go at fighting talk but words look empty to me:

Ten Hag: “I’ve strong belief I'm going to win and I will prepare the team in that way, that we're going to win”.

“And why? Because it's based on our rules and principles in the game, and it's based on our game plan and then a strong belief in the quality of my players”.

Liverpool FC vs MU could be judgment day for Eric, if LFC loses, he will 100% have to go to MUFC.

West Ham 2-0 Man Utd

Manchester United's troubles continue, the bubbles are flowing for West Ham.

=====================================

An unhappy Christmas for Man Utd

After Manchester United secured a point against Liverpool at Anfield last time out, the mood of negativity seemed to ease but, following a poor performance against a team managed by their former manager, the statistics make for grim reading.

United have lost 13 games in all competitions already this season - the last season they lost more matches before Christmas was in 1930-31 (16), a campaign in which they finished bottom of the top flight.

They have also recorded more defeats so far this season than in all 62 competitive games last term.

And they have failed to score in their last four matches in all competitions for the first time since November 1992 under Alex Ferguson.

Rasmus Hojlund, who was replaced by Marcus Rashford after 55 minutes, is still yet to register a goal in the Premier League while Antony has failed to score or provide an assist in all 19 appearances this season.

While Ten Hag's list of injuries is extensive, forcing him to turn to the academy and hand a first senior appearance to 19-year-old defender Willy Kambwala, the lack of chances created with the forward players at his disposal will be a concern for the Dutchman.

Their response to going behind appeared to be indifference and they will have to quickly pick themselves up with the prospect of an in-form Villa on the horizon.

Off the pitch, uncertainty around their ownership continues to rumble on and a resolution looks increasingly unlikely before Christmas.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think it was a decent 72 minutes where we didn't take our chances. We should've gone in the lead but we didn't and then it was one moment of switching off."

On Alejandro Garnacho's miss: "I think he is confident, he's in good form at the moment. He was one on one with the keeper and he could've taken it but we didn't."

On how disappointed he was with the lack of a comeback: "We tried. West Ham weren't running behind us for a long period in the game and then they got the goal and then of course you encourage the team. From that they were very aggressive defending the box and from that moment it's difficult to create a chance."

On United's poor record against top opposition: "At this moment we are not top, but we have seen last week against the top of this league we were head-to-head. We didn't score, we had the best opportunities of the game. There we defended very well for 90 minutes, that has to be always our standard like what we did there. You have to bring that to every game on the pitch."

On what he could change from this year going into 2024: "In 2023, we won a Cup, we played the FA Cup final, we were third in the league. There were highlights but we are over-performing, but in this moment we are underperforming. There are reasons for it, we have many injuries, so the team will be better if the injured ones return. We have to be calm, stick together, stick to the plan, we have to do it together."

Ten Hag hopes familiar faces can boost Man Utd consistency

Erik ten Hag says the return of key players will bolster Manchester United's consistency as they plot to build on Tuesday's dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

It seemed United were destined to go five games without a win as familiar defensive frailties allowed Villa to go 2-0 ahead in the space of six first-half minutes following John McGinn's unchallenged free-kick and a goal from an unmarked Leander Dendoncker.

United, however, staged an impressive rally in the second half, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring twice before a long-awaited first Premier League goal from Rasmus Hojlund's secured a win that lifted the club innto sixth place two days after Jim Ratcliffe's upcoming investment in the Red Devils was announced,

Victory over Villa was only United's second win in seven games during December, but manager Ten Hag has been without the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia, all due back in January along with Victor Lindelof.

"So often we have to change the team," said Dutch boss Ten Hag. "You don't get the routines. We know football is about solid performance and consistency and we know we have to make a step there, but I'm sure when we have more players available in the key positions we will get more consistency."

Marcus Rashford made his first United start since December 2, with the England forward having initially lost his place to Garnacho before illness delayed his return.

"I think he played very well," Ten Hag said of Rashford. "He was ill and also he had one or two games where we preferred to play Garnacho on the left side but he deserved it. There is internal competition.

"(On Tuesday) we played Alejandro on the right, that can be a solution, it can be fluid, but Rashford can also play on the right side."

Villa were all set to end the game level on points with leaders Liverpool before United's second-half fightback, with manager Unai Emery urging the Birmingham club to put the result behind them.

"Move on, be demanding," he said. "I told the players that the first part of the season was fantastic but I want more. If they want more we have to work hard to get it.

"My mentality now is to focus on Saturday (at home to Burnley) and prepare the match as well as possible. We want to be better tomorrow than today."

Erik ten Hag: Manchester United manager confident of strong relationship with Ineos

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is confident he will have a strong relationship with new co-owners Ineos.

Ten Hag has not yet spoken to the key Ineos figures who will be involved at United, led by company chairman and chief executive Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ineos' purchase of a 25% stake in the club was announced on Christmas Eve.

"We are really looking forward to work together," Ten Hag said. "Ineos wants to work with me, in this structure and I want to work with them."

Proposed new club director Sir Dave Brailsford was at Old Trafford on Tuesday to watch United's 3-2 comeback win against Aston Villa.

But neither he nor Ratcliffe have met Ten Hag since the deal was announced.

The United boss said the packed Christmas programme meant he had no spare time for a chat, but it is coming.

"The schedule is so condensed so I said no, in this moment I don't want to have distractions but in the coming days and weeks there will be time and then I'll know more," he said.

"But I think it's a good thing. It's very positive."

BBC

NOTTINGHAM, England -- It's never a good thing for a Manchester United manager to be compared to David Moyes, but Erik ten Hag is now posting more alarming statistics than the man generally regarded as the worst manager of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era at Old Trafford.

United's 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday -- United's 14th loss in all competitions already this season -- followed the same rinse-and-repeat pattern of many of their collapses. Concede first, equalise and then throw the game away with amateurish defending. Add in some dismal individual performances and confused tactics and you have the story of Ten Hag's season so far.

It was chaotic as usual, but chaos doesn't lend itself to success too often. Rather, it generally leads to failure, and Ten Hag's second season is beginning to resemble Moyes' only campaign as United manager, when he was fired just 10 months after replacing Ferguson in May 2013.

The problem for Ten Hag is that his team is now performing worse than Moyes' was after 20 games of the 2013-14 season.

Moyes' United were seventh after 20 games, with 34 points from 20 games, having scored 33 goals and conceded 24. Fast forward and now Ten Hag's United are also in seventh, with just 31 points from 20 games. With 22 goals scored and 27 conceded, Ten Hag's team is scoring fewer and conceding more than the side that cost Moyes his job.

Moyes was never convincing when he attempted to explain poor results and performances, and Ten Hag is falling into a similar trap.

"Every time you have to swap [players], the routines are not there and top football is going quick, so you need the communication in the split moment," Ten Hag said when asked why his team makes recurring mistakes. "We went for the win and there was one counterattack where we probably did not defend too good as a team, but what I saw in the second half was a team going for a win and that was what we missed in the first half. I saw some decent football in the second half."

Ten Hag has new bosses since INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 25% stake in the club, and INEOS director of sport Dave Brailsford was watching on Saturday from the directors' box alongside Ferguson, the legendary former manager of Man United. Although Ten Hag insists INEOS is keen to work with him, the sound of the clock ticking on Ten Hag's reign became louder every time the camera shot switched from Brailsford to a forlorn-looking Ten Hag on the touchline.

It was a similar story with Moyes before his sacking. Back then, the camera shot would be of a frustrated Ferguson before cutting directly to the struggling manager, looking more and more haunted with every defeat.

One can only imagine what Ferguson was whispering into Brailsford's ear during this defeat at Forest, although it is a safe bet to assume that he wouldn't be over-complimentary about the performance of Antony, United's £85m winger who has not registered a goal or assist all season.

The Brazil international was substituted on 54 minutes to chants of "What a waste of money!" from the Forest supporters, but the former Ajax winger's lack of impact in a United shirt is becoming a major problem for Ten Hag simply because the former Ajax manager pushed the club to sign him 18 months ago.

"He is so frustrating," former United captain Gary Neville told Sky Sports. "I blame the football club. It's not [his] fault he was bought for that money. There has to be a 'no' when it gets to that level. If I was looking at him at £25m, we would be looking differently."

Pursuing Antony was a misjudgment on Ten Hag's part, but he repeats it every time he selects Antony in his starting lineup. The player is simply not good enough for a club aiming to contend at the top of the Premier League, so Ten Hag's inability to accept that will not help his cause with his new bosses -- Brailsford will be on a three-person football board with co-owners Joel Glazer and Ratcliffe once INEOS' investment is ratified by the Premier League in the weeks ahead.

There are mitigating circumstances that Ten Hag is dealing with, of course. United's injury list has been lengthy all season and forward Rasmus Hojlund, who finally scored his first Premier League goal for the club in Tuesday's 3-2 win against Aston Villa, missed the Forest game due to illness.

But all managers must overcome injuries and illness problems -- they are a fact of life in elite sport -- and those Ten Hag is expected to compete with are doing a better job of it right now.

When asked to pinpoint United's biggest problem, Ten Hag was direct: "The injuries," he said. "Also some issues but mainly the injuries hold us back in the process. In January, we have a lot of players returning so then our levels can be higher.

"We have had nine different partnerships in the back. It doesn't matter as well, the fans don't want to hear this, they want to see us winning and that is what we have to serve them."

The upside from this game was that Marcus Rashford scored from open play for the first time since September. Alejandro Garnacho also showed himself to be a star of the future again. But with Nicolás Domínguez and Morgan Gibbs-White scoring either side of Rashford's goal for Forest, the points went to Nottingham Forest, leaving Ten Hag with more negative statistics.

Under Ten Hag, Man United now have lost 14 games this season with another 18 games left to play -- Moyes lost only 16 in one full season at United. Meanwhile, United's 21 defeats suffered in 2023 in all competitions is the club's worst mark since 1972 and the fourth-worst tally in its history. This team has also lost the same number of games -- nine -- as it suffered in the Premier League throughout the whole of last season. Nottingham Forest, for their part, beat Man United for the first time since 1994.

So, the crisis returns. Next up is an FA Cup third-round tie at Wigan Athletic, who sit 18th in EFL League One. Ten Hag simply cannot contemplate losing that one.

Ten Hag lays blame

Erik ten Hag has blamed injuries for ruining Donny van de Beek's spell at Manchester United and insisted his experience should not put off other players from signing for the club.

Van de Beek, 26, has joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan until the end of the season, having failed to establish himself under any of three different managers - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Ten Hag - at United since joining from Ajax in the summer of 2020.

The £35million midfielder made only 23 starts during his three and a half years at Old Trafford, and already spent time away on loan when he joined Everton for the second half of the 2021-22 campaign, again being limited by injuries at Goodison Park.

Ten Hag worked with Van de Beek at Ajax but hopes that a reunion in Manchester might revive the midfielder's fortunes proved misplaced.

"He has had many injuries, first of all," Ten Hag said. "From the first moment I came in here at Manchester United, he wasn't the player he was at Ajax because he was injured. So many times he was not available and then he struggled for a long time to recover from that injury.

"That is probably the main reason why he was not playing. We decided for a loan in the summer but it didn't come and then his opportunities are few because also we make appointments and we make agreements with players and contract players in that position. The competition was high."

Van de Beek is among a number of players who have joined United in big-money deals in recent seasons but then struggled to live up to the billing, with £72million winger Jadon Sancho also close to leaving on loan in this transfer window after a public falling out with Ten Hag.

But asked if others might look at Van de Beek's experience and be wary of moving to Old Trafford, Ten Hag disagreed.

"That is always on those players and how much confidence you have in your capabilities," he said. "But I can tell you one thing - the Premier League is tough. Man United, that is tough to play there because it's more easy to play in almost any other team than Man United because the pressure is that high always.

"You have to deal with that. But if you have confidence in yourself, this is the best challenge and this is definitely the best club you want to be at as a player. It depends on player to player, and it depends especially on the character of the player, their personality."

The form of Manchester United winger Antony has been impacted by off-field issues, says manager Erik ten Hag.

The Brazilian has been the subject of a police investigation after allegations of domestic abuse were made against him by three women, though he has not been arrested or charged in either Brazil or the UK and denies the allegations.

The 23-year-old has no goals or assists in 21 appearances this season.

"I think his off-field issues stop him playing," said Ten Hag.

"They have had an impact on him, definitely, so he has to deal with that. So he caused them, so he has to sort them out. We will give him all the support but he has to do better."

Antony became Manchester United's second most expensive signing when he joined from Ajax for £82m in September 2022, having scored 24 goals and provided 22 assists in 82 appearances for the Dutch giants.

He scored 10 goals and contributed five assists in 47 appearances for the Red Devils during 2022-23 and started the first four games of this season.

During the international break in September, Brazilian news outlet UOL published allegations made by Antony's ex-partner Gabriela Cavallin, which Antony denies.

Further assault allegations followed when Rayssa de Freitas and Ingrid Lana each claimed Antony assaulted them in 2022, which he denies.

United responded by saying they take the allegations "seriously" and granted Antony leave with full pay to deal with the allegations on 10 September.

He resumed training from 29 September having spoken to Greater Manchester Police voluntarily and returned to action in early October.

"First year he was OK, in the pre-season he was very OK, first four games [of this season] he was very good," added Ten Hag.

"But from the moment he was out and then he came back, he didn't deliver the performance we should expect from him and he can do so much better.

"His end product in Ajax was very high and he could return to that level. The Premier League is more difficult but he's capable of doing that."

Ten Hag also wished Jadon Sancho good luck after his loan move to Borussia Dortmund was confirmed earlier this week.

The 23-year-old has been exiled from the Manchester United team since a public dispute with Ten Hag at the beginning of September.

"I hope he's doing well," he said. "I wish him the best of good luck. That's it. I hope he's doing well and he'll be a success."

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to MOTD: "I am quite disappointed, when you go ahead twice and then concede two soft goals it is a bit frustrating, but you have to take it as it is.

"The attitude from the team was great, the spirit was great. We fought and gave everything. The fans were behind us and I think it was a great game for everyone to see, not just Manchester United fans, because there was a great tempo to the game.

"Senior players like Casemiro, Martinez and Luke Shaw are returning and when you add that to our team I am sure it is a strong side."

Marcus Rashford: Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says discipline key 'on and off pitch'

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says footballers need discipline "on and off the pitch".

His comments come in a week in which England forward Marcus Rashford has had to take responsibility for his actions after reportedly twice being seen in nightspots in Belfast.

Rashford then reported ill for United training on Friday after flying to Manchester from Northern Ireland.

He did not feature in Sunday's FA Cup win over Newport.

Ten Hag refused to speak about Rashford's situation when he addressed the media before his side's Premier League trip to Wolves on Thursday.

But asked if he was imposing the right discipline on his players, he said: "It's nothing to do with me but in football, you need discipline and that is on the pitch but also off the pitch," he said.

"There is a line between, every player, every professional knows this, what is required."

Allegations in the Sun about Rashford's behaviour on his nights out did not reflect well on the 26-year-old.

It is the third time in 13 months Rashford has been reprimanded by Ten Hag following off-field issues.

He was dropped for last season's game at Wolves because he overslept and missed a team meeting. He then apologised to Ten Hag for going to a pre-arranged birthday party in October hours after United suffered an embarrassing 3-0 home defeat by Manchester City.

Ten Hag denied Rashford was showing him disrespect with his repeated transgressions.

"It's nothing to do with that but as I said, let's focus on the game, let's move on," he said. "We have to focus on winning football games.

"He has taken responsibility and for the rest it's an internal matter. Case closed."

Rashford will be in United's squad for the trip to Wolves, with Ten Hag desperate for the forward to continue his recent form of two goals and an assist in his last two Premier League games.

"There's a strong bond developing between Marcus and Rasmus Hojlund and we want to continue that process," he said.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he will have to be "creative" with his team selections after the club failed to sign a striker in the January transfer window.

Anthony Martial has been ruled out until mid-April after groin surgery, leaving Rasmus Hojlund as the club's only recognised centre forward.

Ten Hag wanted to sign cover in January but was limited by financial rules.

"It's not a secret that I wanted a striker extra," said Ten Hag.

"Because with the injury of Martial we don't really have back-up there, but it was not possible because we have to match the Financial Fair Play rules.

"We have Omari [Forson], we have Amad Diallo, of course we have Rashford who can play there. I think for the rest, all the positions are occupied. But, yeah, we have to be a little bit creative if it's up to the number nine position."

United have scored 28 goals in 22 Premier League matches this term.

Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford started in attack during United's 4-3 win against Wolves on Thursday, but the trio have just 19 goals between them in all competitions this season.

Antony, who came on as a substitute at Molineux, scored his first goal of the season in a 4-2 FA Cup fourth-round win against Newport County last Sunday, while Forson is yet to make a competitive start for the club.

United allowed Jadon Sancho, Donny van de Beek and Hannibal Mejbri to leave the club on loan in January, as they look to comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.

"There are some disadvantages on Financial Fair Play [profit and sustainability rules]," said Ten Hag.

"So, to make space for FFP, you actually have to sell players and you have to sell good players. I don't think that's the way you build a team."

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag has demanded Fulham apologise for a mocking TikTok they made of Bruno Fernandes and called for officials to provide more protection for his captain.

Fulham's official TikTok account poked fun at Fernandes over a perceived dive in Saturday's win at United.

Fernandes overcame an injury from that game to play in Wednesday's FA Cup last-16 victory at Notting Forest, assisting Casemiro's late winner from a free-kick.

Ten Hag insists he is not one of the nearly 500,000 viewers of the video on TikTok, but was not happy it had been published by Fulham.

"I did not know about this video," he said. "If they did this I would say it is not right. It is absolutely not right. It is not right for a club to make such statements. They should apologise for this."

Fernandes had his throat grabbed by Forest defender Felipe late on and was on the end of a few robust challenges.

Asked if Fernandes needs more protection, Ten Hag added: "He is a very passionate player. He is a very creative player. He is creating the most chances in the Premier League.

"You see opponents targeting him, especially after Saturday when he had the knock and they see it. Then I feel the refereeing should protect him."

Ten Hag says despite his rough treatment at Forest, Fernandes will be fit enough to face Manchester City on Sunday, live on Sky Sports. Raphael Varane, who was also a doubt, is available too.

United will not have any players returning from injury for the trip to the Etihad.

Erik ten Hag future still unclear after 'stabilising' win over Toffees

After successive defeats, Saturday's 2-0 win over Everton is one that will stabilise Manchester United's season at a time when the scrutiny on manager Erik ten Hag is intense.

First-half goals by Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford gave the Red Devils victory to ensure they avoided recording three successive Premier League losses for the first time since 2015.

Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's assertion last month about the importance of reaching the Champions League, it has almost been taken as fact the Dutchman's fate hinges on whether United qualify for next season's competition or not.

That is not the reality, though.

With Ineos now in charge of football operations at Old Trafford - Sir Dave Brailsford has been a virtual ever-present at matches and is having a major input behind the scenes - a new structure is taking shape.

The impending arrival of Omar Berrada as chief executive in the summer is viewed as a key appointment given his vast experience with the City Football Group, both in terms of football operations in both the men's and women's sphere, and executing deals.

But Berrada will, at some point, be accompanied by Dan Ashworth. United are adamant they will not pay a suggested £20m fee for Newcastle's sporting director but it is acknowledged that some kind of compensation deal is eventually likely to be struck for someone they view as, like Berrada, being the best in class.

Southampton's director of football Jason Wilcox is also a target and while club sources have distanced themselves from Crystal Palace's sporting director Dougie Freedman, the mere fact a link has been made suggests there is an additional appointment to come.

With Brailsford and Jean-Claude Blanc, a well-respected and well-connected official who has held senior positions at Juventus and Paris St-Germain, already part of the United football board, this will complete a behind-the-scenes picture that may well include John Murtough, who has come in for a huge amount of criticism around United's recent recruitment.

United officials have sympathy for Murtough given he has been asked to execute deals, a job it was not envisaged he would have when he arrived in 2014, initially to work within the academy.

The upheaval behind the scenes is concrete proof Brailsford, and the rest of the Ineos team, do not feel the structures that previously existed were right for a sporting organisation of United's stature.

And this is shaping their view around Ten Hag.

For, the reasoning goes, through David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Ten Hag, United have failed under a huge amount of successful management experience. Common sense suggests there must be another reason for this lack of success other than just the manager, particularly as, under Van Gaal, Mourinho, Solskjaer and Ten Hag, United have regressed after initial success.

So, the question is being asked: Is it fair to judge Ten Hag until he is working under the right structures?

Whilst no decision has been made, it does at least leave open the possibility of the Dutchman remaining in position into next season, as he himself has suggested with his public statements.

There is also a secondary point which tends to get overlooked but is the reality for every Premier League club.

If they sack a manager, the compensation counts against their profit and sustainability figures, which in turn affects how much can be spent in other areas.

With Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham present at Old Trafford to watch his beloved Everton but also using the opportunity to speak to the media and talk up the possibility of a brand new stadium for United as part of a wider regeneration project, Ineos has set about altering what many feel is stagnation under the Glazer ownership, led by poor decisions from former executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Ten Hag could be part of it.

Erik ten Hag is to remain as Manchester United manager until at least the end of the season, with the Dutchman so far impressing Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

ERIK TEN HAG OFFERED BUNDESLIGA ESCAPE ROUTE IF HE GETS SACKED BY MANCHESTER UNITED THIS SUMMER - PAPER ROUND

TEN HAG HAS BUNDESLIGA OPTIONS

The Daily Star believes that several Bundesliga clubs could make a move for Erik ten Hag if he leaves Manchester United at the end of the season.

With the Dutchman under pressure, Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart and Bayern Munich are all interested.

The paper reports: “Erik ten Hag will be offered an escape route to the Bundesliga if Manchester United sack him this summer.

“Ten Hag is battling to keep his job at Old Trafford following a disappointing season with United. United have failed to challenge for the Premier League title and crashed out of the Champions League at the group stages.

“The Dutchman has to secure Champions League qualification to stand a chance of surviving, with new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe targeting England boss Gareth Southgate as his replacement should he decide to make a change.

“Bayern Munich have been keeping close tabs on the Ten Hag situation and are admirers of the 54-year-old, although Xabi Alonso remains their No.1 choice to replace the outgoing Thomas Tuchel.

“But German rivals Bayer Leverkusen and VFB Stuttgart also like Ten Hag - and could be willing to hand him a swift return to management. Leverkusen will need to replace Alonso, who is weighing up offers from Bayern and Liverpool, who want him to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.”

CHELSEA AND ARSENAL FACE HIGHER FEE FOR GYOKERES

Sporting Lisbon want to insert a £102 million release clause into a new contract for striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Sun reports that with Arsenal and Chelsea two of the clubs keen on the Swede, his current side want to warn off any clubs from thinking they will land him on the cheap.

The paper states: “Sporting Lisbon are opening talks on a new transfer release clause for Viktor Gyokeres to “protect” them from the Premier League clubs circling.

“The Swedish striker cost a club-record £17m last summer from Coventry City but he has already repaid that faith with his scintillating form.

“The 25-year-old has scored 27 goals in 33 appearances, as well as recording double figures in assists, to catch the eye of Europe’s big guns.

“Both Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with the hotshot - with the latter allegedly having a £74m approach rejected in January.

“Previous reports had claimed that Sporting Lisbon were holding out for the £87m release clause fee that was part of his package.

“Sporting Lisbon are hoping that the reward of a pay rise would see Gyokeres pen his new contract and agree to a release clause of a whopping £102m.”

MAN UTD TARGET WOLVES’ GOMES

The Mirror believes that Manchester United have added Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes to their list of transfer targets for the summer.

The player, valued at around £40 million, could be in line to replace Casemiro, who is regularly linked with an Old Trafford exit.

The paper explains: “Manchester United are weighing up a move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes – who could make his Brazil debut against England.

“United are looking to sign a holding midfielder this summer - with Casemiro likely to leave – and have identified £40million-rated Gomes as a potential replacement for his fellow Brazilian. Gomes has been watched by United on several occasions this season, most recently earlier this month, when Wolves beat Fulham 2-1 at Molineux in the Premier League.

“The 23-year-old, signed by Wolves for £12m from Flamengo in January 2023, is expected to be handed his first cap for Brazil against Gareth Southgate's side at Wembley on Saturday.

“Gomes, a combative central midfielder nicknamed 'The Pitbull' in his homeland, has also attracted interest from United's Premier League rivals Tottenham and Newcastle.”

LUNIN SET FOR REAL STAY

Real Madrid’s Ukrainian goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin, looks set to stay with the Spanish club as the two parties discuss fresh terms.

The Athletic reports that the club want to keep hold of the 25-year-old and he wants to stay.

The website writes: “Real Madrid and Jorge Mendes, Andriy Lunin’s agent, have begun talks for the 25-year-old goalkeeper’s renewal.

“Lunin’s current contract runs out in 2025, as by The Athletic reported in December. Until then it was understood to end in 2024, as the club had not announced a renewal since the Ukrainian’s signing in 2018, when he signed for six seasons.

“Negotiations are still at an early stage, but Real Madrid wanted to make it clear to Lunin that they count on him and that their intention is for him to renew. The goalkeeper will have to analyse what to do when he has the definitive proposal, but he has always been in favour of staying according to sources with knowledge of his thinking.”

Erik ten Hag needs to fix something he insists isn't an issue for Manchester United

Nearly every successful team has a solid backline but Manchester United have lacked that for quite some time.

In the current campaign, United have conceded 40 league goals, at an average of 1.38 per match, with only eight clean sheets in 29 outings. Andre Onana has been left exposed far too often, with the numbers more akin to a side fighting relegation than one competing for silverware.

Erik ten Hag is undeterred by the criticism of United’s defense. After the draw against Brentford on Saturday, Ten Hag said: “As long as we get results, no, I’m not concerned. We defended low at times because Brentford are very direct and we lost so many second balls we had to defend the box.”

Ten Hag had to tinker with his defence yet again during the match, with centre-backs Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelöf departing early due to injury.

It has been an injury-plagued campaign for United, with Lisandro Martinez now back on the treatment table. There’s been a lack of continuity in defence and that is likely to have played a part in the way Ten Hag approaches games.

However, plenty of other elite clubs have had to deal with similar issues. Liverpool sit at the top of the table despite their issues in defence.

While injuries haven't helped United's search for consistency, something else that can’t be overlooked is United’s weak defending in transition phases.

For a team that likes to play on the break and catch teams out when they've lost their shape, United's ability to defend against such attacks is lacking. But this isn’t just the back four's responsibility, it all comes down to how United press from the front. Ten Hag’s bold approach to win the ball high up the pitch looks great when done correctly, but they look exposed when teams beat their press.

Giving away possession cheaply makes United architects of their own downfall, something that has happened plenty of times this season, leading to unnecessary goals. Ten Hag will be scrambling for a solution as the season enters the final phase.

Man Utd manager wants new striker in summer transfer window

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag wants to sign a striker in the summer transfer window.

The Dutchman felt his goalscoring options for this season "should have been enough".

But with seven games to play in the Premier League, United have just 45 goals, the fewest of the top 10 teams.

Asked at a news conference how vital it will be to bring a proven scorer to Old Trafford this summer, Ten Hag said: "I think it would help."

Ideally, he wants more than one strong challenger for every role on the team.

Ten Hag added: "You need more options. You need double positioning in every position.

"Some positions we didn't have the choices this season - the striker position, the left-back position - and that has a negative impact on the results."

United, who travel to face Bournemouth on Saturday, signed Denmark forward Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £72m on a five-year deal last August.

The 21-year-old is the club's top scorer in his debut campaign with 13 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions.

England striker Marcus Rashford has netted eight times in 38 games while France international Anthony Martial, out since groin surgery in January, has scored twice in 19 appearances.

"In this plan we constructed we should have had enough goals," Ten Hag said.

"You count on goals from Rashford - last season he scored 30. You count on goals from Martial - in my first season he played very well, and also in very important games he had a high impact on our performances.

"And then bringing a goalscorer like Rasmus Hojlund in, it should have been enough goals."

Ten Hag 'open' to transfer ideas from new hierarchy

Provided he remains in charge, Ten Hag will be working within different parameters in the transfer market after Sir Jim Ratcliffe became minority owner at United in February, taking control of football operations.

Ineos director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford is set to play a key role at Old Trafford.

United have appointed Omar Berrada as chief executive after he resigned as chief football operations officer at City Football Group and he will begin work in the summer.

This week United announced John Murtough was stepping down as football director and they are keen to bring in Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Southampton director of football Jason Wilcox has also been linked with a role at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag said his past dealings in the transfer market for United have been "good" but he is "open" to input from key personnel in United's new structure provided they match his ideas.

"We are working in the background on plans with scouting," said the 54-year-old former Ajax head coach.

"We have good plans, I think also with quality players. You see now about recruitment: [Andre] Onana is doing very well, Rasmus Hojlund, everyone is seeing his big talent and potential. [Lisandro] Martinez, everyone was hugely happy with him, and there are others.

"So the recruitment is good. But if they [new directors] have even better ideas, we are always open. If you have options but they come with better options, we are open.

"I trust the new ownership that they will work as quick as possible and bring new good structures and that they can execute.

"But we have a way we want to play, so we know our profiles, so it has to match the profiles we want."

Reaction to FA Cup semi win a disgrace - Ten Hag

The reaction to Manchester United's FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City has been "embarrassing" and "a disgrace", says manager Erik ten Hag.

United have been widely criticised after relinquishing a 3-0 lead against the Championship side before winning on penalties.

Coventry had a late goal ruled out for a marginal offside by the video assistant referee in extra time.

"Football is about results," Ten Hag said. "We made it to the final and deserved it.

"We lost control for 20 minutes and were very lucky in the end but we made it to the final. That is a huge achievement."

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has been one of those to criticise the performance of Ten Hag’s side, saying there is "no coming back" for the Dutchman.

The FA Cup final against Manchester City next month will be Ten Hag’s second in two years as United manager, after they lost to their Manchester rivals in last season’s Wembley showpiece.

Asked if he understood the negative reaction to their narrow win against the Sky Blues, Ten Hag said: “No. Absolutely not.

"The reaction from you [the media] was embarrassing. Twice [two FA Cup finals] in two years, it is magnificent.

“For me as manager, four cup finals in four years. The comments are a disgrace.”

Erik ten Hag ‘faces huge 25% pay cut’ to his £9m salary if he somehow manages to keep his job as Man Utd manager

ERIK TEN HAG faces a 25 per cent pay cut should he keep his job at Manchester United.

The Dutchman signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford in 2022 but his role is under serious threat.

United sit sixth in the table after beating Sheffield Utd 4-2 at Old Trafford last night, 13 points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa, and look to be out of the race for Champions League football.

And according to ESPN, failure to reach Europe's elite will see Ten Hag's £9million-a-year wages slashed by 25 per cent.

It means starting next season with a revised £6.75m yearly salary but there remain questions over Ten Hag's future.

As revealed by SunSport, the ex-Ajax boss appears to be heading for the Old Trafford exit after losing the faith of fans.

It comes in the wake of blowing a 3-0 lead against Championship side Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final and needing penalties to win.

United’s hierarchy witnessed the turning of the tide in person as the Red Devils faithful streamed out of Wembley rather than celebrate a shootout.

Co-chairmen Avram and Joel Glazer were there with new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has assumed sporting control of the club.

Behind him was sat new technical director Jason Wilcox.

Ratcliffe has made changes at the very top with Omar Berrada poached from City to be the new chief executive and Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth set to be given the sporting director role.

Ratcliffe’s right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford will also have a say in the football department.

That is increasingly looking unlikely to have Ten Hag at the helm even if he enjoys a shock final win on May 25 against neighbours City.

Former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter is the leading contender to take the job in the summer.

England's Gareth Southgate, Brighton' Roberto De Zerbi, Brentford's Thomas Frank and Wolves' Gary O'Neil are other names linked.

He should get one more spin at the wheel to see if he can build a title challenging squad next season.

If not, he should go. Three full seasons without challenging for the PL at a club like Manchester United is not good enough.

Ten Hag happy for outcast Sancho after Dortmund win

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he is happy for Jadon Sancho after his stellar Champions League performance for Borussia Dortmund – but would not offer any guarantees over his future.

On Wednesday, the £74m winger produced an outstanding display as the German side secured a 1-0 semi-final first-leg victory against Paris St-Germain.

Sancho was frozen out by Ten Hag after refusing to apologise for an inflammatory social media post in September, when the England star claimed he was being made "a scapegoat" by the Dutchman.

He returned to Dortmund on loan in January.

“Yesterday he showed why Manchester United bought him and why he represents a high value for Manchester United,” said Ten Hag.

“That is good. I'm happy for Jadon, with his performance yesterday. We'll see what is going to happen in the future.”

If Ten Hag remains manager, it is difficult to see how Sancho can stay at Old Trafford for the remaining two years of his contract.

Dortmund are keen for Sancho to return next term, although it is unlikely they would match his wages or anything close to the fee United paid for him.

Clearout suggestions 'a joke'

Ten Hag has dismissed suggestions United might sell virtually all their players this summer.

It was reported – including by BBC Sport – that the club were willing to listen to offers for the majority of their players as they aim to compete for major prizes.

Ten Hag rejected the notion of a clearout.

“It's a joke,” he said. “As long as I've worked [in football], every summer [it is reported] Manchester United are interested in 200 players. We did some research. Also, every summer we sell all of the players in our squad.”

However, Ten Hag acknowledges United have some work ahead of them to catch Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

“We know we are still below the levels of the expectations around Manchester United – we have to catch up," he said.

"I'm now going into my fifth window. Two windows were quite OK, the other two we missed. The base of our squad is very good but we have to make improvements.”

Bayern Munich have placed Erik ten Hag on a new list of possible successors to Thomas Tuchel.

Erik ten Hag hits back at Jose Mourinho and makes Manchester United recruitment claim

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has hit back at comments made by Jose Mourinho about the level of "support" he has been given during his Old Trafford tenure.

Mourinho recently suggested Ten Hag has been given more backing in the transfer market than he received during his time in charge. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss spent two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, overseeing proceedings between May 2016 and December 2018.

During that time, the Portuguese chief drafted in a cluster of big-name players for big-money transfer fees, including Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku. Pogba returned to United in August 2016 for a club-record fee of £89million.

However, Mourinho said he didn't receive the same level of backing during his tenure as Ten Hag has. United have spent north of £400m since Ten Hag was appointed in April 2022, including £179.2m on Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund last summer.

Ten Hag has hit back at Mourinho's claim, insisting the Portuguese is the only United manager who has been supplied with the players he wanted since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

"Apart from Mourinho, the manager didn't get the players they wanted, and that is what you need," Ten Hag told ESPN Brazil. "I am confident we will achieve our goals, but it is a tough competition. It is not a two-horse race anymore.

"There are seven, eight [teams in the Premier League] who all go for the title, who all have very good squads. So if you want to go to the title, you have to construct that squad."

United plan to be active again in this summer's window and have identified three areas they wish to strengthen as a priority: centre-back, central midfield and attack. The club, however, does plan to sign two centre-backs.

Hinting at what United will need to try and add to their squad this summer, Ten Hag, speaking at Thursday's press conference, said: "Yes, that is one of the issues in constructing the squad where we have to improve, to do things better to construct a squad where we have more depth. I think the most important thing is to return players and to get them back. In many positions we created depth and now in some positions we don't have choices.

"For instance, the left back position. (Luke) Shaw only 15 starts this season so far and (Tyrell) Malacia zero starts. Not even available."

It doesn't look likely that we are going to see him as the United manager after this season. I don't think there are many fans who want him to stay at the club.

Bayern actually want this clueless bum? Arsenal will be worried they sack him before their match.

'Underperforming' Man Utd 'one of worst-coached teams in league'

Just when you think things can't get any worse for Manchester United, they do.

Crystal Palace’s 4-0 demolition of United on Monday has left Erik ten Hag’s men in real danger of missing out on a European place for next season as unwanted records continue to tumble.

The loss leaves them eighth in the Premier League and out of the European places – although a victory against Manchester City in the FA Cup final would guarantee a Europa League spot.

And, despite having 10 first-team players out injured, Ten Hag was not pulling any punches.

"It is clear and it is obvious," he said. "This is underperforming.

"We didn't act how we want to do it and it's by far not good enough."

How bad is it?

  • This is the most defeats United have suffered in a Premier League season (13)
  • United have never finished below seventh in Premier League - they are currently eighth
  • Since the start of last season, only Nottingham Forest (five) have lost more Premier League away games by a four-goal margin or higher than United (three)
  • The Selhurst Park thrashing was United’s heaviest defeat of the season
  • United have conceded 81 goals in all competitions this season, their most in a campaign since 1976-77 (also 81)
  • They have not finished a season on a minus goal difference since the 1989-90 Division One season. They are currently on -3
  • United’s expected goals on Monday was 0.35 – their second worst of the season
'One of the worst-coached teams in Premier League'

Ten Hag’s future as United manager has been up for debate for months – despite the Dutchman having a year left on his contract.

They have taken 10 points from the past 11 Premier League games and conceded late goals against Fulham, Brentford, Chelsea, Liverpool and Burnley in that run, costing them 10 points.

Ten Hag says he is battling against an injury crisis, the like of which he has never known throughout his managerial career. The combination of Jonny Evans, 36, and Casemiro, 32, was the 14th different centre-back partnership this season.

But pressure is growing on new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to clarify Ten Hag's situation.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has little sympathy.

He said: "This is one of the most poorly coached teams in the Premier League, that is a fact. Ten Hag needs performances, he needs a belief.

"You have to make us believe there is something there. I would expect Man Utd’s under-23 team not to lose 4-0 like that. I have been coached by some of the top coaches and a lot of what I see here is just wrong."

Everton’s former United defender Ashley Young, added: "If they put on displays like tonight, they will miss out on Europe.

"If they aren't willing to at least run about, they will be in trouble. It has been an up-and-down season, but tonight too many players were not at the right level. Palace made it look like men against boys.

"I think it is as bad as it gets."

'A deserved defeat'

United’s players were given a rousing ovation at the end of the match by a defiant away following, but it certainly wasn't for the level of their performance.

"As Man United we should perform better," Ten Hag said to BBC Match of the Day. "The players who were available should do better. It's a deserved defeat. The performance wasn't what we expected.

"We can't focus on just one player [Casemiro]. We have to focus on the team performance. This was not right. We have to put it right on Sunday. We have to learn from this game and improve.

"You have to stick together. You have to take responsibility. The fans gave us such huge and tremendous support."

They host Arsenal next in the Premier League on Sunday, with speculation growing around Ten Hag's future. Asked by Sky Sports if he was the right person to lead United next season, the Dutchman replied: "Absolutely.

"I will keep fighting and I prepared the team in the best way I could do and it was not good enough, by far not good enough.

"I have to take the responsibility for that, but I will find energy and I will prepare them for Sunday's game.

"All season, we have huge problems and by now, this is the fourth defeat in this calendar year, so that's not a lot and every time, we had huge problems and many times, we sort it out. Today, we didn't."

'The football has left Casemiro'

An injury crisis left United with a makeshift back four and it was a night stand-in centre back Casemiro will want to forget.

The former Real Madrid midfielder was run ragged as Palace’s impressive duo Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise enjoyed a memorable evening.

One damning stat doing the rounds after full-time was that the Brazilian was dribbled past eight times in the game - the most for any player in a Premier League game this season.

The 32-year-old impressed in his first season at Old Trafford, but has struggled for form this season.

Carragher, said: “I think Casemiro should know tonight that he should only have another three games left at the top level. The next two league games and the cup final, then he should be thinking, I need to go to the MLS or Saudi.

"This has to stop because we are watching one of the greats of the modern time. I always remember the saying 'leave the football before the football leaves you'. The football has left him. At this top level, he needs to call it a day at this level and move.

"The level of that player, he should not be putting himself through this. He is too good of a player to be putting in a performance like that being laughed at by Crystal Palace. He needs to call it a day."

I want him to stay.

“We are most dynamic and most entertaining team in the league” He said

I mean to be fair to him - they are entertaining rival fans with their comedy performances. Long Live ETH

One thing I don't understand is the fans whinge about injuries. Yesterday 7 players that started were his signings. Then an 8th came on. Mainoo is a good prospect but he was also put in the 1st team by him.

The guys is clueless and long may he continue in this job.

Was Ronaldo right about him 🤔 United fans defended Hag religiously at the time

He probably will get sacked after yesterday and yes some of the signings have been off colour.

However the 7 signings yesterday include players like Johnny Evans and Eriksen - would they be United players at this stage of their career in the glory days of United?

He really dropped the ball on Antony and Mount BUT wth were the club going letting him bid so much on these type of players.

Overall its hard not to blame anybody but the manager when the players he signed cant play to the system he is designing but the whole club genuinely seems rotten from top to bottom.

You say some of his signings have been off colour. Which if any would you say have been any sort of success.
Please include Weghorst and Sabitzer etc with your analysis.

I am struggling to find one signing he has made that has genuinely been a consistent 7-8 out of 10 performer. People say Martinez he has probably been the best however he has had some major major disasters like 7-0 4-0 to name a few and has been suspect in a lot of games he played to. Obviously injured this season.

I am struggling to find one player he has signed that if they were to go on sale this summer any of the top PL clubs would go for.

100% should get sacked. Had a decent 1st season, this season they have gone backwards this season.

Awful signings and manager whose show no tactical acumen this season

Casemiro Hojlund Martinez and Onana have been ok.

I could have articulated it better but my point was that the club structure allowed him to get away with some of the signings and even endorsed them.

Man Utd have signed better players and played under better managers in the last few years but the results are always the same ( although they haven't got destroyed the way they have in some games this season).

If he is going he should go now. No point letting him try to win the FA cup and then punt him.

There’s a trend with these new managers at United, first season or so is always the honeymoon period then it all falls apart

He should be sacked period. Team has no identity all the sigings under him have waned badly Mount Onana Hojlund alot of money wasted who should succeed him well somebody who had the EPL èxperience otherwise 2/4 seasons will be wasted. TUCHEL is available UtD should get him he is a top class proven manager

I disagree bro. Casemiro 1st season was OK yes but then the red cards came and he hasn't been at any sort of decent level.

Hojlund is young. Had a purple patch but should never be the starting striker for Man United yet.

Onana is a woeful goalkeeper. No positional IQ whatsoever. Might make a point blank save here and there but a terrible shot stopper.

Martinez I've already said.

I agree that he should not have been given full say on signings as his talent ID is terrible.

Casemiro has been a disaster, especially when you consider what they paid for him and what they are paying him. Started off well last season but then tailed off and he's been awful this season.

Hojlund is still a kid, think long term he'll be good but he should never have been the one to lead the line. Another experienced striker was needed and Hojlund could have been gradually eased in.

Martinez I'd agree has been good but he's injured far too often.

Onana has been awful, he's like an outfield player that's been asked to go in goal.

Casemiro was really good last year I think he was one of their best players. Onana etc perhaps I am setting the bar low based on where they are. There is potential in a couple of players. Anyway what they paid for him and are paying him in wages isn't solely down to the manager.

I read somewhere that Utd deliberately offered high wages and long contracts as it looks like they had more assets for the accountants.

Yes overall the transfers have been poor. I'm not excusing ETH at all.

I was just saying that the problems seem to be a hell of a lot bigger than him and the club hierarchy got them into this mess too.

Would the Manchester of United of 10 years ago have been picking up players like Evans or Eriksen for free as key squad players?

There doesn't seem to have been any vision or ambition from the top beyond opening the cheque book and splashing the cash while hoping for the best.

ETH did ok at Ajax. Ratcliffe needs to ask himself if he thinks he can do better with more of a football structure around him in the club. I suspect that the answer to that question based on yesterday is no.

Erik ten Hag walks into a bank to cash a cheque. As he approaches the cashier he says, "Good morning, Ms could you please cash this cheque for me?"

Cashier:"It would be my pleasure. Could you please show me your ID?"

Ten Hag:"Truthfully, I did not bring my ID with me as I didn't think there was any need to. I am Erik ten Hag, Manager of Manchester United”.

Cashier: "Yes, I know who you are, but with all the regulations and monitoring of the banks because of impostors and forgers and requirements of the legislation, etc., I must insist on seeing ID."

Ten Hag: Just ask anyone here at the bank who I am and they will tell you. Everybody knows who I am."

Cashier: "I am sorry, Mr Hag but these are the bank rules and I must follow them."

Ten Hag:"Come on please, I am urging you, please cash this cheque."

Cashier: "Look sir, here is an example of what we can do. One day, Tiger Woods came into the bank without ID. To prove he was Tiger Woods he pulled out his putter and made a beautiful shot across the bank into a cup. With that shot we knew him to be Tiger Woods and cashed his cheque."

"Another time, Andre Agassi came in without ID. He pulled out his tennis racket and made a fabulous shot where the tennis ball landed in my cup. With that shot we cashed his cheque. So, sir, what can you do to prove that it is you and only you?"

Erik stands there thinking and thinking and finally says, "Honestly, my mind is a total blank...there is nothing that comes to my mind. I can't think of a single thing. I have absolutely no idea what to do. I don't have a clue."

Cashier: "Will that be large or small notes , Mr Ten Hag?”

Ronaldo exposed this bald nutmeg a long time ago.

Hag thought he was showing leadership getting rid of CR7, but like those before him in the recent past at United, it all falls apart after the first season or so.

There is no rocket science to get Man U back to glory days, it will be a gradual journey and even the most prudent method will take atleast 3-5 years to be able to compete for EPL title , sadly Ten Hag doesn't seem of that calibre so what should United do may be lure Emery or gamble on somebody like Maresca

Erik ten Hag 'to be sacked by Man Utd' whatever happens in FA Cup final

Erik ten Hag will be sacked by Manchester United whatever happens in Saturday's FA Cup final, according to a new report from The Guardian.

it was always on the cards but that's a bit poor to leak it just before the Cup final, what motivation would he have knowing he's for the chop?

Shocking leak!
Deserved another chance next season's with a bit more of his squad.
13 CB partnerships in 38 league games is not funny. This is mean to be the strongest league in the world.
Add to that no left back, one fit striker at the club, and no Mount all season, you can't be that harsh on him.

Howe at Newcastle was in a similar position

Two seasons and no pattern of play, no phylosophy is not good enough. On top of this, he signed alot of these players who have not performed which has clearly resulted in Sir Jim coming to a conclusion that Ten hag cannot be trusted with more money.

Two seasons in charge. Three Wembley finals. Two trophies in the cabinet.

Manchester United will play in the Europa League next season.

But will Erik ten Hag still be in charge?

Ten Haag has won more trophies in 2 years than Arteta has in 4 years @Mamoon

I’d keep him for another season but I think utd want someone new . Poch is the fav imo

For me yeah, this guy sacked Ronaldo and was pumping his chest etc I thought he was the second coming of Sir Alex Ferguson, now he is doing a bhangra after winning the FA Cup and finishing 8th, is that good enough for this United?

But I do like him going after the media on his way out, needed more of this energy during the season

It's a dilemma Ten Hag thin on squad blunders like (Onana, Hojlund, Mount) but still restores his dignity by winning a trophy, on the other hand Bayern Munich have more belief in Kompany who suffered embarrassing relegation with Burnley

'If Man Utd don't want me, I'll win somewhere else'

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says if the club do not want him, he will go and win trophies somewhere else.

United overcame overwhelming pre-match odds to record a deserved 2-1 FA Cup final victory against Manchester City at Wembley.

First-half goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo were enough for a success that secured a place in next season's Europa League.

It came amid a backdrop of intense rumour that Ten Hag will lose his job, no matter what the outcome.

The Dutchman said he did not know whether the speculation was true or not.

But, after following up last season's EFL Cup success to become the first United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to win trophies in successive seasons, Ten Hag struck a note of defiance.

"Two trophies in two years is not bad," he said. "Three finals in two years is not bad. I'm not satisfied with it. We have to do better.

"If they don't want me, then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I do."

It is new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos counterparts who will determine Ten Hag's future.

Ratcliffe released a statement on the final whistle, expressing his pride at the performance of United's players and praising "the staff who work tirelessly to support their team".

However, it made no specific reference to Ten Hag.

When he was later asked, "Jim, is Erik staying?", on his way to the United dressing room in the mixed zone area - where players stop to speak to journalists after games - Ratcliffe briefly stopped and turned around, but proceeded without offering an answer.

Ten Hag did not follow the lead of fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal. When faced with a similar situation eight years ago after United beat Crystal Palace - their last FA Cup triumph before Saturday - Van Gaal strode into the news conference with the trophy and slammed it down on the desk in front of him.

However, Ten Hag did make a pointed assessment of some of the criticism he and his team have faced.

"When I took over we were in a mess," he added.

"The team is developing, the team is winning and the team plays to an identity. But you need a strong squad and the players to be available."

When Ten Hag was asked if finishing eighth, United's lowest league placing since 1989-90 and with a minus goal difference was good enough, he retorted: "When you make this, you don't have any knowledge about managing a football team. When you don't have players available, you cannot win."

Having said before the game he was going on holiday on Sunday, an interview with Ten Hag emerged on Saturday morning in which he stated talks had taken place with Ineos and they were committed to him.

Asked to clarify those comments, Ten Hag said: "Do I have to repeat myself 10, 15, 20 times? They don't have to tell me every week."

The 54-year-old added he was unaware of talks between United and his potential replacements, stating: "Maybe you have sources. I don't have them."

Ten Hag's defiant post-match mood was also clear in a pitchside BBC Match of the Day interview where he was asked if media criticism this season had been unfair.

"I think so," he said. "On the team and me as well. It was not right.

"I tell you [the media] this all year - when the players are fit, we can play good football."

Ten Hag is now responsible for two of the five major trophies United have won since Ferguson retired in 2013. And, in goalscorers Garnacho and Mainoo, he feels he is developing two teenage talents that can take the club back towards the levels they used to occupy under their legendary Scottish manager.

"When you see the last decade there were not so many finals and trophies for this club and not so many young talents coming through with high potential," said Ten Hag.

"We strengthen the squad by our coaching and training but we still need transfer windows to bring better players in and also players who are always available or often available because when the players are not robust enough, you cannot win trophies."

It's a dilemma Ten Hag thin on squad blunders like (Onana, Hojlund, Mount) but still restores his dignity by winning a trophy, on the other hand Bayern Munich have more belief in Kompany who suffered embarrassing relegation with Burnley

With Kompany, it's about the Phylosophy. His pattern of play at Burnley with LTD recourses are the reason Bayern have instilled him as their Manager.

The quality player they have, they feel, he fits the picture perfectly. We've also got to remember, Kompany himself was a top top player, who Automatically will demand the respect.
