A French humanitarian worker who was freed this week in Mali after four years in captivity has revealed she is a Muslim, French media reported on Friday.

I support multi culturalism. But not at the cost of replacing local culture with the imported one. When a person enters foreign lands, its on the immigrant to integrate with the locals. Not the other way.

I also support wearing any kind of head gear in public as long as it does not pose any security risk. Overall, enforcing ban on hijab(though it is debatable), is a small price to pay for living in a first world country.

The Ironic part is that the French have a habit of forcing their culture on others, throughout Africa, Haiti and Quebec (on the natives) they've forced their culture and language, you can even ask Canadian posters here about the elitism the French espouse. Heck even the Flemish and Swiss Germans are sick of their French compatriots. I was watching a documentary of the separatist movement in Flanders and the Flemish were complaining about the Walloons (French-speakers) would never bother to learn their language despite living in their areas.

France is a hellhole for refugees. It was also the French who butchered millions in Africa as colonalists. A lot of their wealth is because of this, perhaps they should give it all back so Africans dont have to move.

The problem isn't 'extremist secularism' (which doesn't really make sense), it's overt anti-religion policies in France. While I dislike religion, and I understand the rational of wanting to eliminate girl's being forced to wear hijab (either explicitly or implicitly), the banning of religious items in schools (and I believe some other places) is restricting freedom, and is therefore bad. Secularism is simply the separation of religion and state, it doesn't entail restricting religious freedom- though some laws restrict the draconian aspects of religion, and rightly so.

On the topic of colonialism, yes it was horrible and exploitative, but it's a tricky subject to see how reparations should be distributed (obviously that will never happen, but it would in an ideal world). In many of the countries that were affected by colonialism, corruption is very common, so the money will likely be used for nefarious purposes. Let's not forget the counterpart to European colonialism that is often overlooked- Arab colonialism (India, modern-day Pakistan, modern-day Bangladesh, North Africa, East Africa, and others that I've likely missed). They also have profited greatly from colonialism and are just as liable as the West, I'd imagine.
