Google marked what would have been the 70th birthday of late Saudi Arabian singer, Etab, with a Google Doodle featuring the late star..

Born on 19 August 1947 as Tarfa Abdel-Kheir Adam in Riyadh, she took stage name Etab.

The singer's career kicked off in the 1960s and placed her as the first Saudi woman to perform publicly and one of the very first pop musicians in the Gulf area.

She soon gained a worldwide popularity, releasing 15 albums.

"Etab mixed traditional and contemporary Arab songs to create a style of her own, collaborating with top poets and singers from around the region."

She used her distinctive, husky voice not just for singing, but also for advocating for female equality within her field.

Etab was a prominent member of the Union of Arab Artists and the Egyptian Music Syndicate," Google comments in its description of the doodle.

Etab died on 19 August 2007.

Etab's Google Doodle is regional and can be viewed in North Africa and the Middle East.
