any tips on which exercises one can do during the hours of fasting.

I don't want to lose my motivation/momentum

I think a more important question is, what should be your ramadan diet if you wish to weight train as well?

If you read the article I posted and scroll to the bottom it includes a sample training and diet plan.

Also advocates drinking a gallon/4 liters of water between sunset and sunrise.

The main issue for me during Ramadan is training for distance running. Cardio is not advised while fasting since you can't drink any water during the workout. So that means either running after breaking the fast, which becomes extremely hard to schedule since the days are so long. Or not running at all, which means losing a month of training.

Or going slow and steady around an hour or so before Iftaar, and then immediately starting the recovery after breaking the fast. I'll experiment with this approach, but I'm a bit scared of running on empty as well as not being able to take any fluids during exercise.

Bro, that is the best website i have EVER seen regarding weight training and tips! Not only does it tell you what to do during ramzan, but the 5x5 workout link inside it is amazing!

Much appreciated!
You're welcome. I actually haven't explored that blog at all apart from the Ramadan post. Glad you found it useful.

martial arts during ramadan will be great.
Will make me stronger from inside.

if you have worked out throughout the year than its a perfect time to give your body some rest. dont worry if you loose muscle. you will gain it back in a week without any problem and you will become big faster after resting for a month. Fasting is very important. It will remove all the problems, impurities and illnesses in your body.

Same here.
We usually do a couple of miles trail every day at about 11:00 am.
I am calling it off during Ramadhan. Have informed the crew.

I think the best time to train for me is immediately after Sehri. The appartment gym opens at 6 am, Rozas in Canada will last for 16 hrs long. Ideally i would have liked to work out after Iftari but rozas will open at around 9:20-30 pm at night and the gym closes at 10 pm. Hence that is not feasible and its not feasible to train heavily at all when ur body is deprived of nutrients.

Hence IMO the best time for me to train would be around 6:30 after Sehri where i will should have some energy from my Sehri Diet. Another thing to do is to be a bit conservative, probably not feasible to lift heavy in Ramzan when u cant be on ur regular diet. Hence i will compromise in this month and just lift light managable weights to maintain the muscles, physique so that once Ramzan is over i can lift more heavily without any aches, pains, niggles etc.

Train 20 mins before iftari time you will burn out really fast so listen to your body, fasting isnt an excuse to sit on your backside, al be playing cricket an going gym :)

i hope to be able to do about 30 minutes of running before iftari and also eat less.

Working out during Ramadan

With Ramadan arriving, I am interested in seeing how some people go about their workouts during their fasts.

Last year I tried to work out late at night, but it didn't really work for me as my body was already worn out by then.

Do some of you work out before fast, after sehri, during the fast?

Mods please change the title to working out during Ramadan. Lack of sleep is starting to get to me lol

I think at most a person can do light exercise , 25 - 30 mins to keep in touch. No need to exert that much.

Working at during Ramadan

Normally a late workout for me. I tend not to have a heavy meal at iftari time- this helps.

I am assuming that most of you guys don't do cardio while you fast. I usually do HIIT after my workouts, but that is asking for trouble while I'm fasting.

How do you guys meet your cardio demands during Ramadan?

You do HIIT after your weight training?...your best off doing HIIT on your non weight training days...

Training in the evenings is the best course of action...

I do cardio everyday regardless of whether it is a weight training day.

I would train in the evening, but the gym closes down after Iftari.

I might just perform a home workout with a series of push ups, crunches, etc

Good article on some weight training that can be done during Ramadan.

This is perfect...started 5x5 month and a half ago and was worried about coming to a standstill during Ramadan.

My original plan was to maybe go gym after Taraveeh before Sehri (luckily it's a 24 hour gym) and would probably be empty then.
I could do the 2 hours before Sehri but that would be like 7ish and gym would be packed probably...mmh dunno how to go tbh especially considering this is my first Ramadan weight training

its impossible with taraweeh now considering you get done by 11.30 pm with thatt

i always end up gaining weight during ramzan because of the samosa, pakoras ,biryanis and neharis and with little or no physical endeavour

i cnt do gym, or i cant do rozas

This. Most people who workout completely obsess about the smallest things. Bodybuilding itself is quite a selfish endeavor in which we can shut down the rest of the world around us and be picky with what we do and don't eat. Ramadan is a perfect time to loosen up a little and give back a little rather than the me me me attitude commonly seen.

Training itself isn't bad but cramming in every gram of protein between Iftar and sehri kind of defeats the purpose of fasting IMO.

i still go gym while fasting

nice way to build lean muscle build

and for once you are the palest person at the gym if you do a little too much

Hitting the gym while fasting?

Is it a Good idea or a bad one?

Usually one feels that its ramadaan and we dont eat much so there is no need to exercise. Also some think by exercising we might lose energy and that can place us in a spot of bother during the fast. Its fine But hey We need exercise to stay fit.

One may suggest to exercise after breaking the fast in the evening but lets be realistic here, there is simply no time after iftaar with salah and eating dinner etc. plus we are already tired and have zero energy after the day.

so I was thinking about the different ways by which one can remain fit during ramadaan. running or jogging would cause heavy breathing which is not what one wants while fasting so thats a NO NO. Sports also need us to move constantly. So all i can Think about is hitting the gym. U sit in one place and just lift weights to tone your muscles. But with the limited diet, is it a good idea? Will it make us weak or strong?

Any other suggestions to help keep fit in Ramadaan are welcomed.

I've been doing P90X at a decent pace without missing a day so far and it's definitely manageable even during these hot summer days with 20 hour fasts, although I have finished it once already.

Have to do it 2-3 hours after Iftaari though and that'll keep your metabolism up for sehri. I eat a bit of protein to keep some slow burning energy for the rest of the day.

Thats some broscience 101

I've been hitting the gym just before iftari- strictly light weights. Going well so far.

Looks like for some people Ramdan has become shifting the eating time. Earlier used to eat in the day. Now eat in the night

Weights would be fine I guess.

If you guys fast and do cardio though, and in the heat, fair play. I always need an epic refuelling after a long run.

Just got back from mini weight session- feel refreshed.

Its a good time to cut ... actually intermittent fasting has become a popular cutting technique.

I am currently trying to cut from 180lbs to 160lbs ... half way there ... hope to get the other half done by the end of the month.
