NEW DELHI: Indian national Hamid Ansari, arrested in Pakistan in 2012, has been released from jail and will be home via Wagah tomorrow. Ansari, a 33-year-old Mumbai resident, spent the last three years in a Peshawar jail after being accused possessing a fake Pakistani identity card.

In India, the Ministry of External Affairs said "it is a matter of great relief, especially for the family members, that six years of incarceration of the Indian civilian in Pakistan jail is coming to an end. We would like Pakistan to take action to also end misery of other Indian nationals and fishermen whose nationality has been confirmed and who have completed their sentences, but continue to languish in Pakistan jails."

Ansari's three-year jail term ended on December 15, 2018 but he was not able to leave for India as his legal documents were not ready.

On December 13, the Peshawar High Court gave the federal government a month deadline to complete his repatriation process.

"Ansari is being released upon completion of his sentence and is being repatriated to India," Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson Mohammad Faisal said.

He claimed that Ansari was an "Indian spy who had illegally entered Pakistan and was involved in anti-state crimes and forging documents."

Ansari went missing after he was taken into custody by Pakistani intelligence agencies and local police in Kohat in 2012 and finally in reply to a habeas corpus petition filed by his mother, Fauzia Ansari, the high court was informed that he was in custody of the Pakistan Army and was being tried by a military court.

He entered Pakistan from Afghanistan, reportedly to meet a girl he had befriended online.

A two-judge Peshawar High Court Bench, comprising Justice Roohul Amin and Justice Qalandar Ali Khan, on Thursday heard an appeal filed by Ansari through his lawyer Qazi Muhammad Anwar.

Mr Anwar informed the Bench that both the Ministry of Interior and authorities of prison, where he was lodged, were completely silent about his release and deportation to India.

After hearing this, Justice Khan asked the Additional Attorney General to explain how would they keep the prisoner in jail after completion of his term.

An officer, representing the Interior Ministry, informed the court that a prisoner could be kept for one month while the legal documents were being prepared.

After knowing the legal position, the court directed the Ministry to make all the arrangements within a month for releasing and deportation of the prisoner.

And the Pakistani version....

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is repatriating an Indian spy who had illegally entered the country and was involved in anti-state crimes and forging of documents, Foreign Office spokesperson said on Monday.

“Hamid Nehal Ansari, an Indian spy who had illegally entered Pakistan and was involved in anti-state crimes and forging documents, is being released upon completion of his sentence and is being repatriated to India,” Dr Mohammad Faisal wrote on Twitter.

Ansari, an Indian national, entered Pakistan without holding valid travel documents in 2012. He was sentenced to three years prison by a military court in December 2015.

The Indian national's sentence ended on December 15, 2018.

The Peshawar High Court, earlier on December 13, ordered the release of Ansari within a month and directed the Interior Ministry to present a report in the regard in 14 days.

That's the game. You get caught, you pay the price. In Mr. Ansari's case, he's probably one of the lucky ones. 3 years for being a foreign spy is fairly lenient.

Time to let him go after all he's been punished enough now. Another crucial thing is unlike Yadav there was no charge of murdering innocent people on him. I think he was most likely set up by someone online. Let this be another lesson to Indian's crossing illegally in to Pakistan that they will be nailed for sure by our many agencies. He never stood a chance of marrying our Pathan girl if that was what he was planning according to certain reports. Our Pathans can't stand Indian people in fact most in KPK still only marry in their own clan. Someone should have told him that.

How do you know if he is a spy?

Many Pakistani nationals get caught in India too.

LAHORE: An Indian national, who spent six years in jail for spying and forging official documents in Pakistan, was handed over to his country’s authorities at Wagah border on Tuesday.

Hamid Nehal Ansari illegally crossed into Pakistan from Afghanistan in 2012, and was convicted for spying and forging documents in 2015.

Ansari, who was held in Peshawar jail, had filed a petition with the high court in November 2017 requesting that he must not be treated as a spy as he was not involved in anti-state activities.

He told court officials that he came to see a woman in northern Pakistan he befriended on Facebook, his lawyer Qazi Muhammad Anwar said. But police were waiting for him at the woman’s house and arrested him on the spot, he added.

Ansari returned through the Wagah border crossing near Lahore and northern India’s Amritsar city on Tuesday afternoon.

An AFP photojournalist at the border crossing said that Ansari was received by his waiting family members on the Indian side of the frontier.

Local media showed Ansari hugging his mother and bowing to touch his head to the ground after crossing over to India.

Ansari and his family were escorted away by local security officials before they could speak with the waiting journalists.

Speaking to Express News over telephone from Atari, Ansari’s mother Fauzia thanked the Pakistani government for the goodwill gesture. She said the whole family was eagerly awaiting Hamid Ansari’s return for the last six years.

Fauzia said the family did not celebrate any occasion during these six years and even wedding of Hamid’s elder brother Khalid was postponed after the latter refused to tie the knot in younger brother’s absence.

She thanked the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan for repatriating her son only three days after completing his sentence. Hamid’s Ansari’s mother also urged the Indian government to reciprocate the goodwill gesture and release all those Pakistanis who have completed their prison terms in India.

Well he was sentenced by a court. I don't know anything for a fact.

How do you Bill Cosby drugged and raped women? Were you there? No but he was found guilty in court.

And yes, there are spies from both countries and if they get caught they get punished. Like I said, that's the game.

Well if he was innocent then real shame he lost so many years. High time both the countries start forgiving.
