Harry Maguire: Man Utd agree £80m world-record deal, becomes most expensive defender

Is Harry Maguire worth price tag of £80m?

Lol, he's a liability. There's no way he's a elite level defender, infact there's a common agreement at old Trafford amongst the fans that Maguire is the worse defender we've ever had.

common agreement? lol, hes played under 3 managers now at MU, another with England and a few others at Lec and has always been the first name to get on the team sheet.

Yes a bad defender, who just happens to be an excellent ball progressor.

With your logic, how about Bruno playing as a center back, can't defend but has excellent ball skills LOL!

Rudiger, Thiago, Van dyk, Matip, Diaz, Laporte, certainly disagree.

You can take a player from one team and put him in another team and you will see 2 different players, thats why Diaz was so good at City last season, but at the euros he was no where good as Maguire was.

It's obvious you don't watch utd games then lol.

He's gone downhill and doesn't look the player he did at Leicester.

Confidence looks shot.

McGuire was overated from the start, he was never a world class defender. Leiciseter winning the league, gave him a high profile. Utd were desperate so threw the cash. Some said he is better than Virgil , this was just silly.

Im hoping he doesnt make the England squad, he will do something daft in the world Cup.

The comment was about the euros and your talking about utd games, how daft.

If you look through my posts, I've already stated the reason for his performances at Euros.

Plays in a 3 man defence,(big difference to playing in a 2)

Has 2 defensive holding midfielders in front of him

England play in a very defensive low block

Also international football in general is very slow and pedestrian

Let's stick to the topic which which is Man utds 80 million fee for the fridge who is a liability @ OLD TRAFFORD.

Liecester went down hill after signing the Fridge lol

Im not sure what your on about, during the euros England only played 3 at the back in 2 matches.
They line up pretty much like MU (4-2-3-1), maybe your talking about the 2018 WC which is world away now.
Kevin philips also played as a b2b MF next to Rice who was the only DM,

As for the fee, theres always a premium on english players plus LP over paying the odds for van dijk inflated the market and MU were desperate for a CB, it all went against them, Leic knew MU would throw anything to get him especially since our no.1 target koubailly was going for £130m

Maguire didn’t win the league with Leicester. He signed for them a year later.

Maguire is one of those players who seem to perform better for the national team. Similar to someone like Pickford.

United overpaid for him by a huge margin. Making him the captain was also a mistake because he has no leadership skills and it is impacting his performance as well.

Every club makes mistakes in the transfer window but this is a major one because United can recoup the money they paid for him. No one is going to pay more than £30 million for him.

I never stated he did. Being part of Leicester who were recent champions gave him a higher profile.

He will mess up against a big team in a big knockout game in the World Cup. We have seen him against the likes of LFC and City, where he made huge howlers.

I hope Utd dont sell him ever.

England 3-0 Ivory Coast: Gareth Southgate slams fans who booed Harry Maguire before win at Wembley

Gareth Southgate hit out at England supporters who booed Harry Maguire before the win over Ivory Coast, while Jack Grealish labelled the abuse "ridiculous".

Raheem Sterling scored one and set up another for Ollie Watkins before Tyrone Mings headed in with the final touch of the game as England eased past 10-man Ivory Coast 3-0 at Wembley.

However, there had been a big talking point before kick-off when Maguire's name was booed when it was read out.

The Manchester United captain is enduring a difficult season with his club but Southgate called the abuse for a player who has helped England to a World Cup semi-final and European Championship final "a joke".

"I thought the reception was a joke. An absolute joke," Southgate told Sky Sports. "What he's done for us and the way he has performed for England has been phenomenal. I don't get it.

"We're either all in this together or we're not. He's in an England shirt and not only should you support someone in an England shirt regardless but when he's played at the level he has, it should be total commitment behind him. So, I don't get it.

"He was pretty faultless, stepping out from the back for the first goal and was involved in the second goal. This team is totally united. We recognise people have difficult moments but he's top player and will come through it.

"They are real England fans. And some are influenced by whatever, I don't know if it's social media, players that have played previously that are influencing opinion... Obviously his club situation is difficult but he's in an England shirt.

"I remember a few decades ago when some players were booed in an England shirt - it's never been acceptable. I've never got it. Why would people play any better? Fans should always get behind their team."

Maguire's name was sung during the match by supporters and Southgate accepted it wasn't a case of everyone turning on the defender but he insisted England will need Maguire at his best if they're to do well in Qatar.

"It becomes mob mentality. At one end of the ground, we've got a hardcore section of fans playing his song. I'm very aware it's not everybody. But we're either all in it together or we're not," said Southgate.

"Don't think for one minute the other players won't be looking at that thinking, 'that could be me one day'. And that's been one of the problems with playing for England. Players have thought, 'do I want to go because when it turns a little bit difficult the crowd are going to turn on me'. That happened with John Barnes here, it happened with Ashley Cole, with Raheem. And now Harry. They're all outstanding players.

"We need Harry Maguire playing well to even have a chance of doing well. We're not going to win a World Cup with players with three or four caps. That's not happened in the history of the game. We need our experienced players playing well, especially in those types of positions.

"In my opinion, he's the best centre back at his club as well. It's ludicrous. Every time he steps onto a football pitch every action is analysed to death. I can't remember a player having that sort of spotlight on him."

That sentiment was echoed by Maguire's team-mate Jack Grealish who said the team didn't like it.

"Personally I think it's ridiculous," said Grealish. "Even tonight he was brilliant. Our first two goals, first one him driving out with ball, second one driving a bit and passing to Ollie. Not every centre-back can have those qualities.

"He's been a fantastic servant for his country and it's ridiculous for him to get booed. It wasn't something the team liked. Harry's a strong-minded person. His performance tonight will have done him the world of good. It will only spur him on. It's not nice to hear but you've got a job to do.

"We had a brilliant relationship with the supporters last year at the Euros and we need to keep it like that into the World Cup."

The incident comes shortly after the club's defeat to Liverpool

Manchester United have confirmed that a threat was reported at Harry Maguire's home with police investigating the incident.

Police were sent to Maguire's home amid an anonymous threat, with authorities now searching for the culprit of a reported bomb threat.

The incident comes shortly after Maguire's Manchester United were defeated by rivals Liverpool 4-0 at Anfield.

The abuse that Maguire has suffered recently on social media has been shameful and vitriolic. It's a real witch hunt. He is slammed even when its not his fault and every aspect of his game has been criticised.

It must be very difficult for a person to bear, and now after all of that some idiot sends through a bomb threat.

I don't think he can or should continue his career at Man Utd. Perhaps a move to a European country where he can rebuild his career and confidence away from the English media would be best for him.

Maguire: Bomb threats crossed the line

Harry Maguire has spoken out against bomb threats made against his family home amid a torrid season for the Man Utd centre-back.

“Obviously I’m in a position where I’m going to be criticised,” he said when asked about that incident ahead of England's Nations League opener with Hungary this weekend.

“Manchester United paid a large sum of money for me. It is one of the most loved clubs in the world and also one of the most hated in the world as well.

“We know we are under the most scrutiny. I totally accept criticism when we concede goals or make mistakes. I’m big enough to accept people getting on my back and saying I can improve.

“There is a line where we are human beings, I do have a family.

“People ask if it affects me. My mentality is that it doesn’t affect me too much but when it comes to bomb threats, it is more about family. My fiancee Fern.

“I’m just happy my kids are at an age where they don’t read things and see things on the news.

“If my kids were an older age, they could see things and go to school and people are speaking about it. That is when it affects you a little bit more.”

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire set tongues wagging earlier when he 'liked' a post on Instagram which repeated a newspaper story that one of the reasons Cristiano Ronaldo was unhappy at Old Trafford was because he is having to take a 25% pay cut due to the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League.

It was not entirely clear whether Maguire was equally unhappy or having some fun at his team-mate's expense because the remaining 75% means Ronaldo is 'only' getting around £360,000-a-week.

However, BBC Sport has been told Maguire liked the story in error and it has now been removed.

Maguire is due at Old Trafford tonight to watch England open their Euro 2022 campaign against Austria.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was booed by some fans as they beat Crystal Palace 3-1 in a pre-season friendly in Melbourne.

Maguire has been confirmed as skipper for this season by new manager Erik ten Hag, who plans to partner the England international in central defence with £57m new signing Lisandro Martinez.

However, some supporters in the 76,499 crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground made their feelings known during 10-man United's victory.

Ten Hag's side have been enjoying huge backing in Australia, including a small number who have followed the team from the UK.

Although it is difficult to know who was doing the booing, which was audible every time Maguire touched the ball inside the first half hour, the concern will be that it follows United for the rest of their pre-season, which includes games in Perth on Saturday and Oslo on 30 July, and then into the Premier League opener against Brighton at Old Trafford on 7 August.

Maguire was targeted by some fans for his poor form last season. In April police conducted a security sweep of the 29-year-old's home after he received a threat to his family.

United midfielder Donny van de Beek said of the booing: "I didn't know really what happened. But if I saw the game today I think Harry was playing really well.

"He was aggressive, he got so many balls, so that means he has a big personality.

"He has a lot of experience, so I think that's positive what he [showed], his performance today."

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire faces being dropped for Monday night’s crunch clash with Liverpool.

The north west clash sees the Premier League rivals looking for their first wins of the season.

United have got off to the worst possible start under new boss Erik ten Hag and sit bottom of the league table, having yet to pick up a point.

His side, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford, which was then followed up with a 4-0 thrashing away to Brentford, leaving Ten Hag with serious questions to answer.

And talkSPORT’s Manchester correspondent, Micky Gray, says fans can expect big changes at Old Trafford on Monday.

“I have spoken to a couple of people, and that could be one of the big changes [against Liverpool],” he told the Sports Breakfast.

“I don’t think Harry Maguire is going to be in the starting XI, so it just depends if it is going to be new signing Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane. Manchester United have options.

“I don’t think it is down to the personnel [for Manchester United’s current form], I just think whatever XI Erik ten Hag picks, they have got to match Liverpool for effort.

“If they don’t, it could be another big score.”

United’s defence still looks a bit suspect but nonetheless is improved without the hopeless Maguire in there.

Looked alot better. However, martinez looked suspect against a classic nine which both brighton and Brentford had. Liverpool on the other hand their nine
Was suspended.

As for Maguire, its imperative he needs time on the bench to clear his head and work on his deficiencies on the training ground.

Harry Maguire gave a defiant interview on talkSPORT to defend his place in the England team after the 1-0 defeat to Italy on Friday night.

The Three Lions were relegated from the UEFA Nations League following Giacomo Raspadori’s stunning 68th-minute strike.

Maguire has defended England and his place in the team

There was simply nothing to get excited about from an England perspective, with the latest goalless show leaving England 450 minutes without a goal in open play – their worst run in 22 years.

The Three Lions are one of only two nations who have failed to score a single non-penalty goal in the Nations League. The other is San Marino, who are made up of part-timers.

Despite a solid performance at the San Siro, Maguire’s place in the starting XI has been scrutinised after he was dropped by Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils captain has endured a prolonged run of poor form – but Southgate looks set to stick with him for the World Cup in November.

When asked about his situation, Maguire told talkSPORT: “I am all good, ready to play, I feel fit and fresh.

“On my form, I don’t know what has been said, I don’t really read about it.

“I came off the back of three positive games with England in the summer, and a good pre-season, I felt really good.

“Obviously, the manager [Erik ten Hag] decided to leave me out for a game, and the team have been winning since.

Maguire does not look like regaining his Manchester United place any time soon

“I am working hard on the training pitch to make sure I am ready for when my opportunity comes. That is all what I can do to try and help the team.

“I am not concentrating on anybody else and what people are saying, I think if people can make a story about me, I am Manchester United captain, it is going to make big news.

“So, that is the reason they do it, they like the clicks, and things like that, but I went into the Euros after an eight-week injury, and did not play one game, and got into the team of the tournament.

“In terms of rustiness, and things like that, I am sure that won’t happen.”

Harry Maguire: Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag backs under-fire defender

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he still believes in Harry Maguire despite criticism of the defender.

Maguire has been jeered by his some of his own fans on club and country duty this season and made mistakes in the build-up to two Germany goals in England's 3-3 draw on Monday.

"I back him because I believe in him," said Ten Hag.

"It's about him. I'm sure he can do it. He'll turn this around. I am really convinced of that."

Ten Hag has preferred Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane as his central defensive partnership, with playmaker Bruno Fernandes wearing the captain's armband ahead of Maguire in recent weeks.

Maguire has made only three Premier League appearances this season.

"Even after he wasn't in the team, he trained really well," said Ten Hag of the 29-year-old.

"But more important, the quality was there. You see his career, almost 50 caps for England. He's performed really well for Leicester and Manchester United. What you see is he has a high potential."

Luke Shaw, a team-mate for both Manchester United and England, said earlier this week that Maguire has been criticised "more than I've ever seen before in football".

Maguire will miss Sunday's meeting with cross-town rivals Manchester City at Etihad Stadium through injury.

Manchester United: Harry Maguire can be 'great player for us', says manager Erik ten Hag

Harry Maguire can be a "great player" for Manchester United if he can reproduce his England form with his club, says United manager Erik ten Hag.

The defender, 29, has made one Premier League start since August, when he was dropped after United's 4-0 defeat at Brentford in favour of Raphael Varane.

But he started each game of England's run to the World Cup quarter-finals.

"I've been asked many times. It's clear he is good enough to play at the highest level," said Ten Hag.

"He has, for England, good games almost all the time. He had a period in Manchester where he performed badly. Then, of course there are difficulties.

"But when he is working hard, he gets that confidence. You are seeing that with the way he is playing for England.

"We want him to bring it on the pitch for Manchester United. I expect from him, the team knows what they expect from him. If he does that, he will be a great player for us."

Harry Maguire's move to West Ham is off with the defender intent on staying at Manchester United to fight for his place in the first team.

The England defender, 30, looked set to join the Hammers after a £30m fee was agreed between the clubs.

Maguire struggled for first-team opportunities last season and was stripped of the captaincy this season.

However, United have maintained they would respect his wishes and did not want to push him out of the club.

A source close to the player said that while Maguire "respects West Ham and David Moyes" there was "never an agreement in place" over his personal terms.

They added: "Harry remains settled at United, loves the club and believes he will get plenty of opportunities to play this season."

Maguire was on the bench for United's 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday but did not get on even though manager Erik ten Hag used five substitutes and replaced central defender Lisandro Martinez with Victor Lindelof at half-time.

Prior to that game, Ten Hag said Maguire would be better off leaving United if he is not confident enough to battle for a first-team spot.

United paid Leicester City a record £80m to make Maguire the world's most expensive defender in 2019, with Pep Guardiola also keen to take him to Manchester City.

However, while he was given the captain's armband under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he has endured a difficult time after a promising first campaign with the club.

An incident in Mykonos, in which he was given a 21-month suspended sentence for hitting a police officer and attempted bribery, appeared to impact his football.

A major fallout with Cristiano Ronaldo over the captaincy followed, while his Cheshire home was also the subject of a bomb threat.

And with his confidence appearing to be affected amid mounting criticism, he has even been subjected to jeers from some fans at certain games during pre-season, despite Ten Hag also saying he thinks Maguire is capable of playing a significant role this term.

"I feel like he is a quality player and I know that once he gets his confidence back, people stop ripping into him, and he's given a chance to showcase himself again, he will do well," Hammers forward Michail Antonio told BBC Radio 5 Live's Footballer's Football Podcast.

"How well and how quality the boy was playing to the stage where he is now - [he is] a shadow of the man, a shadow of himself.

"Leaving United could probably make him better because a lot of the stuff was coming from inside more than outside.

"I don't feel a change of manager could change his situation. He needs a change of club because he's got that stigma now to his name at United.

"Managers have changed and they've still not really wanted to play him. That stigma of Maguire at United is kind of stuck with him, so I think him stepping away, doing something else and having a new, fresh start can revive him."

Harry Maguire: England defender says he can handle criticism after difficult night against Scotland

Harry Maguire has claimed he can handle all the criticism that comes his way after a difficult night for England against Scotland, adding that any focus and pressure he can take from his team-mates is a positive thing.

Maguire, a half-time substitute, was jeered by the Hampden Park home crowd every time he touched the ball and scored a second-half own goal, though England ran out 3-1 winners in Tuesday night's friendly.

The treatment of the Manchester United defender led a "livid" Gareth Southgate to brand it as "an absolute joke" and the England manager blamed the actions of "people in our own country" for Scotland fans jumping on his back.

Maguire has had his say on recent criticism: "I would not say I am a person who struggles with pressure mentally. I have been through a lot in the last couple of years and I have been Manchester United captain for nearly four years. You take a huge amount of responsibility and everything that comes with it, and that is a lot of bad as well as good.

"I would not say I am used to it, but I can deal with it. It pretty much takes the pressure away from my team-mates and puts it all on myself. It makes them play better, for sure. It is a little bit of banter and it is a hostile environment, coming away to Scotland.

"We have given them a goal, which is unfortunate. We knew it would be hostile and in the second half, I got most of it. I am happy to go with that, don't worry about that."

Maguire received praise from the away fans in Hampden all throughout the second half and said "nothing is better" than receiving an ovation from the England fans.

"They have seen what I have delivered for England over 59 caps," he added, when asked about the positive treatment.

"I have been to three major tournaments with them, they have followed us around loud and proud and I have grown up a huge England fan, and nothing is better than receiving a great reception every time I play for my country."

Bayern Munich v Manchester United: Harry Kane defends England team-mate Harry Maguire

England captain Harry Kane says international team-mate Harry Maguire has been "scapegoated" and faced "unnecessary scrutiny".

Kane's Bayern Munich host Maguire's Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Maguire, 30, has struggled for first-team football and faced criticism after England's 3-1 away win in Scotland last week, when he scored an own goal.

Forward Kane said Maguire has been "one of England's best defenders".

However the centre-back will not feature on Wednesday after being ruled out through injury.

Following the game at Hampden Park, England manager Southgate said the criticism Maguire faced was "a joke" after he was mocked by the home fans when he put the ball into his own net.

Maguire says he "can deal with banter" from fans, but West Ham United striker Michail Antonio says the defender's humanity is being ignored, while Maguire's mother, Zoe, said the abuse of her son "goes far beyond football".

Speaking before Wednesday's first group-stage match at the Allianz Arena, Kane said: "I think H has come under some unnecessary scrutiny.

"He has probably been scapegoated a bit. He is a really good friend of mine, a great guy and a really hard working professional.

"He has been one of England's best defenders over recent times and in England's history.

"It is part of our game now, you are scrutinised all over social media.

"But, knowing him, all he will want to do is work harder, to improve and get better, and stay focused."

Kane, 30, also warned against complacency when Bayern face United, who have already lost three of their opening five Premier League games.

The striker, who joined the German club from Tottenham in the summer, added: "United have been going through a tough spell recently, but sometimes that can be really dangerous.

"They are looking for a big response and we need to be careful of that.

"We are at home and want to dictate the game, to play the way we want to - but they have some threats as well who we have to be careful of."

England defender Harry Maguire says supporters who booed midfielder Jordan Henderson aren't England fans.

Henderson was booed when he was substituted in Friday's 1-0 friendly win over Australia and when he came on in the 3-1 Euro 2024 qualifying victory against Italy on Tuesday.

Former Liverpool captain Henderson was criticised for joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq this summer.

Proper England fans don't boo players, said Maguire.

Don't boo players who dedicate their life to play and do everything they can to make this country have good memories and have special moments for them and their families.

England manager Gareth Southgate said after the Australia game that It defies logic that fans booed captain Henderson, who said he must take criticism on the chin.

Henderson received a slightly warmer reception when he came off the bench in the 70th minute against Italy.

You heard when he came on the cheers and a few jeers, but they aren't England fans, said Maguire.

Maguire has been booed by Manchester United and England supporters over the past year.

Last month Southgate said criticism of Maguire was a joke, and his mother Zoe described the abuse he has received as disgraceful.
