Has Australia ever been beaten so badly in a home series?

We are all used to the great Australian side over the years. Competing against them downunder itself was a massive task, let alone beating them. Not only Asian sides but everyone found it difficult to topple Australia in Australia.

But this Indian team is not only beating them but grinding them to defeat. Making their fast bowlers toil hard under sun, almost everyone scoring plenty of runs, scaring their batsman with ferocious pace bowling and bounce etc. Don't recall any touring team inflicting so much pain to Australia as Kohli's boys doing are doing in this series.


So this beg the question(s) -

Has Australia ever made to stretch as much in a series in Australia?
Have they EVER got humiliated so badly downunder?
Have they ever got beaten so badly in a home series?
 
No. Another question- has Australian cricket team ever been this bad? No.
 
Forget the ancient past. In 2010-11 Ashes England clobbered them senseless. This Indian team hasn't come close to doing that, not even remotely close.
 
England did 3-1 once. "Cook" series. But Asian side? Convincingly India. India has dominated Australia many times in Australia.

India absolutely dominated Australia in 1984/85 series . Australia miraculously escaped in all 3 tests. MCG test India was going to win. Border added 77 for the last wicket. India needed 137. Ended up with 59/2 in 28 overs. Rain played spoil sport. In the sydney India destroyed them with 600/4 and bowled them out for 396. then they didn't have enough time. In the first test also India made 520/9 but they escaped.
 
Posters need to be mindful here that even Steve Waugh's ATG team couldn't beat India in India. Ponting's side manage to scrap a series win in India but it was a close affair. There has never been in history that an Australian side stretched India to the limit in India as India is doing to the Aussies here. This kind of beat downs can make or break a team. I hope with SL tests coming up, Australia could field XI players after this meltdown.

And countless West Indies teams. The 84-85 West Indians made the Aussie skipper cry on national TV.......

For a subcontinent team to beat Australia in Australia in a test series is a tremendous achievement, but the Aussies can also argue that this was a poor Australian team and one of the weakest for a long time.

Yeah that's why I said aside from the "ancient past".

TBH more than WI, it was the trio of Greg Chappell, Rodney Marsh and Lillee that made Hughes break down. That was bullying at its worst and Hughes didn't deserve such treatment, in fact nobody deserves to be treated that way, forget a nice bloke like Hughes. The restraint, maturity and lack of bitterness/hatred I see in Hughes now is remarkable and speaks volumes about his character.

2016-17 SA was good but 2010-11 England was exceptional. Admire the Poms for triumphing in Australia, India and South Africa in a span of 5-6 years. Even with an inferior overall record I have them as the best test team of the 2010s.

Lol, I don’t think of that as the “ancient” past!

Kim Hughes brought it on himself. I’ve got his autobiography: it’s amazing that he didn’t think that antics like peeing on his team-mates in the shower might annoy them!

I don’t like Greg Chappell, but the bullying actually came from Hughes’s WA teammates Marsh and Lillee who were often quite boorish in their behaviour.

If Australia come over to India full strength and we remove our 2 best players in India - Ashwin and Jadeja - we'll still win if not whitewash them. Fact.

Ancient past not for you but when WI were wrecking Hughes' team, my parents were in college :)). That's ancient enough for me.

Yeah the WA duo were the bullies in chief but Chappell was happy to play along.
 
Apart from England to some extent NZ i don't expect any other team to do the same to AUstralia with the same team. SA has a solid bowling unit. But their batting unit is also not that good without AB.
 
Never seen an Asian team dominating Aus in Aus in all departments like this.

Even a poor Pakistan team beat Australia in the UAE. That is how horrible the Australian team is. To be honest, i will be shocked if Tim Paine is not axed as captain after this series.
 
Not by any Asian team, but others have done it.
 
Only Windies i think. People may point to the 2010/11 Ashes but that bowling attack was a joke to be honest. That Johnson was a terrible bowler.

Pakistan beat an Australia missing not just Warner/Smith, but missing their top bowlers too.

Even then, they needed the toss advantage to force a win, didn't they?

I refer you to the Brearley tour of 1978/9 which a similarly weakened Australia lost 1-5, and the Strauss tour of 2010/11, where Australia lost 1-3 despite having a better batting line than this one.
 
I think we missed an opportunity to clean sweep them 4-0. That would've been a series to remember for long time.
 
This Australian side isn't poor. They do have a great bowling attack, batting is poor. Every Pakistani poster was claiming that aus has one of the best bowling attacks in world since last one year, even before this series. What happened now ??

IIRC that Aussie batting was good but some of them were in poor form for an extended period of time. The Aussie bowling unit however was terrible, I remember how the English batsmen bossed them that series, scoring 500, 600 at will without the scorers troubling the wickets column. That was the most brutal batting performance I have seen in the current era for a team in overseas conditions against a high ranked opponent.

I refuse to recognise the 1978-79 “Ashes”.

It was a sham: Kerry Packer had signed the best Aussies (Plus Greig, Knott and Underwood).

And he made them available, but the TCCB and ACB refused to allow them to play, which in my book means that they made their own series illegitimate.

For 1977-78 and 1978-79 I consider the Packer series to be the legitimate international series.

By the way, the Fake Aussie team was stronger than you think.

Not just Allan Border, but Kim Hughes and Rodney Hogg too.

And Graeme Yallop might have sneaked into the Real Australia team too. Steve Rixon was terrific too, but wasn’t going to displace Rodney Marsh.

They had Harris. They had Johnson but he was in Sloop John B mode due to loss of confidence against that English murder row batting line. Siddle was pretty good too. I’d say their fast attack was comparable to the current one.
 
Yes by several other teams.

This is the weakest Aussie team ever so nothing too special about beating them.

Pakistan is currently losing to the worst South African team for 50 years.

It’s great to have the good fortune to encounter weak hosts, but you still have to pick the right team, adapt to the conditions and perform to your potential.

I’m thrilled for India.

Are we now? Abbas is getting prodigious seam movement off the pitch. You never know with Pakistan. All we need is a spark, we can run through with it.

I don't feel that Australia has been humiliated at all. Given the relative strength of both sides, I expected India to win the series, yet Australia have competed fairly well imo.

The 3-1 defeat by England in 2010-11 was far more comprehensive.

Lets not get silly here. Australia is playing at 'Home'. Where is the question of competing well coming into picture? I expect India to beat most teams at home without Kohli and Pujara. This Australian side has top notch bowling attack and some capable batsman for home conditions. They would beat most teams at home and you would witness that when SL tours next. Credit to Indian team for playing so well as no.1 team should.

Did you expect Australia to win this series? I didn't.

I think a 3-1 win to India fairly represents the relative strength of each team in Australian conditions, but in no way do I feel that Australia have been humiliated.

Indian batsmen have treated the Aussie bowlers with respect, as shown by the low run rates in the first 3 tests. To humiliate a team, you need to treat them with disdain, and India haven't done that at any stage.

I take nothing away from India. They've built a strong team for all conditions.

You seem insecure for no apparent reason. I expected Australia to lose the series either 3-1 or 4-0.

I expect us to beat SL 3-0 btw.
 
Aussie team is a disgrace right now but their bowling is top notch. India has done very well.

Not true. Some teams in packer era and in mid 80s were worse than this team.

We have to remember that this team has an amazing bowling attack. One of the best in AUstralia's history. The batting is weak yes, but not much weaker than the 70s and 80s teams I mentioned.

For example Australia's squad in the 1977 series against India was full of no-names and mediocre batsmen like Graeme Wood, Rixon, Toohey, Cosier, Ogilive, Dyson, Hibbert, Yallop. Jeff Thomson was the only good bowler, and the only batsman was a 42 year old Bob Simpson.

By comparison, this Australia team atleast has 4 highly rated bowlers forming a potent attack.

Fair point but don’t forget how weak Australia’s bowling attack was during that series. Also that England team was one of the strongest at the time. So it was a mismatch. However, this is the first time a subcontinental team has come here and whipped the Aussies. Many records, were broken during this series.

The everyday cricket fan here feels broken after this test series and has lost hope in Australian cricket. There was still optimism after the 2010/11 Ashes.

I think that was more humiliating for three reasons:

(1) It was against England - an Ashes loss, that too at home, is as bad as it gets for Australia.

(2) the team was weak, but it was the best available Australian team at that point. They were not missing two huge players.

(3) They suffered three innings defeats.

While this loss is very humiliating in its own right, they can still seek solace in the fact that things will get better when Smith and Warner return, and the fact that their bowling attack is still top quality notwithstanding their toil against India.

In 2010/11, the future looked very dark for Australia. No one expected Smith to blossom into a world class batsman and there was no guarantee that the likes of Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon would develop into a formidable bowling unit.

In addition, the fact that England was the leading team in the world along with South Africa was salt to their wounds.

If we compare batting and bowling stats and acheivement of aus 2018 with aus 1980s - packer, we can easily see that aus 1980 was much more weaker.

This australia has pat cummins, lyon(goat offie), hazlewood, starc all of them are better than any bowler of that 1980s team(including jeff thomson, yes).
Before anyone comes up with praises about thomson, he avgs 29 in tests in an era without helmets,no cameras, so he was no great bowler(comparable to starc at best)
 
Two years ago , south africa beat a better australian team by big margins.

This series was so hyped up so naturally the impact will look bigger.
 
This isn't even a question, ashes 2010-11 was a mauling of the highest order this was tame by comparison and there they had no excuses.

Not sure as I would agree. Geoff Lawson would get into the current bowling attack, Merv Hughes and Billy McDermott too. Border, Wessels, Richie, Wood, Phillips would get in as batters and of them only AB was a top-liner.
 
Winning in australia is definitely a big achievement but winning against this australian side... Umm a little less.

Look at their number 3 to 7.

Hardly a batting lineup of a top side, cant remember australias batting so light.

Still a victory away in australia is something to boost for ages.

Last time Aus followed on in Aus was in 80s.

This series , India could have asked them to follow on in 2 tests out of 4.

That Australian team was also much stronger than this one with Katich, Watson, Ponting, Clarke, Hussey, Haddin and then a bowling attack of Johnson, Hilfenhaus, Siddle. That by no means was a weak side by any stretch of the imagination and that same team would not have let India even compete in Australia. Tells you how low Australia's present bowling stocks have fallen.

Let's not go overboard. It was a historic moment but leave it at that. Australians are going through transition. India took full toll.

One other thread where the discussion was which Pakistani player can get into Indian team....it seems 6 Pakistanis from current test team made it to no 1 ranked Indian test team. And you feel the Pakistani team is poor/ weak???
 
Loss to England in 2010/11 was poor too. England absolutely bossed Australia in that series except for the one Test in Perth which the latter won.

Wrong. We'll win anyway - we are hardly short of batsmen on Indian tracks. Even Dhawan and Rohit Sharma can pound the runs, especially against an Australian attack which will wilt quick.

Karun Nair didn't play another game after he made a 300*. Jayant Yadav, Ravi Ashwin, Jadeja - all have made a 100 in India. Batting would not be a problem.

Last time Aussies played in India kohli averaged 9 and was injured for the deciding game, so yes we will beat anyone in India with or without our 2 best players be it batting or bowling.

The way Indian fans are acting with the whole "biggest thing ever," one would expect them to be on the top of this list.
 
They were absolutely dominated. Rain saved them from 3-1. Pathetic display.
