Have the results in Asia Cup actually reflected Pakistan's talent?

Despite two massive defeats at the hands of India, I think Mickey is actually right. Pakistan haven't played to their potential and if they do they are comfortably a better side than the current Indian XI . Pakistan's battery of Pacers is superior and shadab is an excellent spinner. The middle order also has Babar and Malik who are superior to Indian middle order. The only difference has been the stellar form of our openers and PAK were blown away by them

Another issue is the wickets in the UAE which don't suit Pakistan's bowling attack or batsmen. At the CWC next year, you will get wickets which would suit your bowling attack and let your batsmen express themselves and score fluently.

Taking all this into account I believe that PAK are actually a much better side than what we saw yesterdsy.

What do ppers think?

People saying the skill level is missing, don't realize this team made a mess of the game against Afghanistan. On paper, this Pakistan line-up is quite a bit ahead of Afghanistan as a cricket team. However, what we saw was eleven mental midgets taking on a hard working, hungry yet inexperienced team. They are mentally gone right now.

I think there is talent in Pakistan. Problem is our domestic structure just doesn't improve players. Another issue is that our cricketers aren't taught game awareness from a young age. I think we should be including promising 18/19 years old in international squads to allow them to learn quicker .

Conditions have played a major part. We don't have the skill to score on these pitches. Also mentally we have looked off from the get go.

I totally agree with you sir. I think the problem are our top three and their inability to play on these pitches. On these pitches either you need to be free flowing like Rohit and Dhawan or very active like Malik. But our top three have been cautious and really bad at rotating the strike. I do think that we will do much better on different pitches, but its still concerning considering UAE is our home ground.

Yes and no. The thing is anywhere in the world v India we will probably lose more often than not, the boys can't handle the pressure, this has been happening for years. This is a reflection of how we play vs India.

Amazing how quickly panic sets in this team.

This is why I have always wanted that Pakistan rids itself of all cricketers from the 90’s and 2000’s. A whole lot of them underperformed and they generally serve as bad role models: timid and unwilling to fight or simply running away from the big occasion. This team needs its own identity. They could have built something on the good work they did in the CT, but they have regressed , and they have a captain who can’t inspire them by personal performance at least in the limited overs version

India have been more disciplined and are more experienced. That's why they have beaten Pakistan.

Media has a role to play too.. Too much hype for Indian matches.. It's like nake or break for players.. Just look at how champions like zaman and hasan are being verbally shot.. Pakistan is much better than shay they're performing in Asia cup. I somehow feel we don't do well in UAE. The same team has the ability to thrash India in India or England. UAE is not this teams cup of tea!

Not talent, perhaps. But definitely skill. Pakistan's players have shown that they are still short of the amount of skill necessary to consistently beat good teams.

Unbelievable how hypocritical some posters here are. Same people were praising these players as some of the most talented players in the country a few months ago. Have some patience and learn to accept that we are simply not that good at present and India are far better. This is a young and unexperienced team and it will take time for team to grow and develop into proper match-winners. And while they may lack in execution and skill, they are a talented group of players.

To be honest it has reflected our complete lack of planning and preparation because who in the right frame of mind would take 6 fast bowlers and Shan Masood in these conditions. Also served as a great reality checks for the likes of Hasan Ali, Shadab who have been basking in the success they have enjoyed and don't look as focused on their respective games. Finally he have been shown where we truly stand as a cricketing team and how the results against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Pakistani pacers who have gotten used to bowling on pitches that provide swing and seam struggled on these pitches and were not prepared to adjust their bowling according to the conditions. Part of the blame for that should be going to the bowling coach. The good thing is the worldcup is being played in England and our pacers will perform a lot better there.

The only thing that can get in the way of this team in doing well in the world cup is their mental state. Fakhar Zaman who has been your main player has been struggling so much mentally that he did not even have the confidence to review the LBW decision that went unfairly against him. Then you have that run out with your second best batsman due to Sarfaraz's horrible mess up. When you have two of your best players our cheaply, it becomes very difficult to recover from that. Also, Sarfaraz is not able to perform and looks completely out of touch which is not helping Pakistan and their confidence in anyway.

The key to defeating India was to get through the openers and attack their middle orders but due to low confidence, dropped catches and being in a bad state of mind the team hasn't been able to perform to their potential.

We have grossly underperformed, but even our full potential performance isn't much to write home about. We have two batsmen, Malik and Babar. Everyone else is rubbish. Can't do much with that...

I don't think it's a matter of skill. Not entirely at least.

Seems more of a psychological issue and the team knows it too. You can see how multiple guys (far more than normal) are hoping for a spark by purposely running across the ground to applaud good fielding. However, as soon as a guy makes an amazing stop, someone grasses a basic chance and it's back to square one.

Of course, this is leaking into the batting too with Fakhar being the biggest example.

They have reflected our current form more then anything else. This was more or less the same team that won us the Champions Trophy.

We've always struggled in UAE in ODIs from 2009 onwards.

The only teams we've won against are Sri Lanka and West Indies.

The main fault has been the selection of spinners. Both Shadab and Nawaz are mediocre and not genuine turners of the ball whereas India is playing three high quality spinners.

The batting order is Mickey's fault for not letting Haris play before the Asia cup and then throwing him out after just one match.

Where are Zafar Gohar, Mohammad Asghar, Raza Hasan, Usman Qadir etc?

Hell, even Abdur Rehman would've faired well as well as Zufliqar Babar.

pakistan is totally blown away in this tournament and apart from first match againts hongkong everyone has seen how badly we are been humilated by india even afghanistan.

i am afraid tomorrow it will be a very very tough game for pakistan to win against a full of spinners team bangladesh

This. Shadab Khan is not good enough to be the spearhead of the spin attack in these conditions. Zafar Gohar should've been playing with him.

Well it doesn't really help when post CT Pakistan have been playing weak teams more times than not, and then when they finally play against a strong team they get overwhelmed due to the massive skill level between the weak teams they have played vs the stronger teams they play. I think if they play better teams more consistently, then you'll see better performances. Also, unlike a lot of others, I'm not abandoning ship with this current roster. I do believe that we have capable players it's just that they need to learn that 'when the going gets tough, the tough gets going' and I feel that this will show if they play stronger teams more often (which they will in the near future).

To answer OP, at this very moment, the results of this Asia Cup have not reflected Pakistan's talent. I feel they need to play a variety of good teams to be fully sure where their current crop of players are at in terms of playing tough competition.

Pakistan is a very good T20 side but not a good ODI one. How many times have Pakistan scored 300+ against good teams in history? Batting remains the weak link. Amir's form isn't helping in the bowling department but in general Pak bowling is still world class. Fielding was great until the coach resigned but it will get better. How many batsmen in this Pakistani lineup have the capacity to score a hundred at a good clip against top teams. If your answer is less than 3, then you can't consistently score 300 runs.

Pakistan played brilliantly to win the Champions Trophy last year but again playing against weaker oppositions in ODIs since then has masked their frailties. Pakistan have just played 7 games against top 5 ranked opponents since CT final and they are 0-7 in those games. Don't know what different was expected. I am surprised that they are losing to an Indian team which has horrible selection and is missing Virat Kohli. But still this result should not come as a surprise for the Pakistan fans. It is not as if they have been beating Australia, SA, NZ prior to this Asia Cup in ODIs.

Isn't skill all about weathering all sort of conditions? If our team needs a perfect pitch, weather and perfect everything else then we are far from being skillful. Let alone India, we struggled against Afg who not only have the skill bit also the attitude and the temperament and seem hungry to win.

Im surprised that nobody seems to rate shadab as a spinner. During PAK tour of England , he was consistently getting a lot of revs on the ball. Is it something with his action, not flighting the ball enough? Or do you think his back is acting up?

UAE has been your 'home' for many years now so this conditions excuse doesn't hold up. Next.

What is talent? What's the name of the measurement tool of talent? Is it some delusional thing?

Talent, ceiling etc are the last resort PPrs take to end the argument which includes their fav player. It can be extrapolated to teams as well

I think its simple, if we took those catches we could have been in the game. if the players could have hit boundaries after Malik would have been a better total.

Quite harsh to bracket Shadab and Nawaz in the same category. Shadab played really well in the BBL, despite being assigned the difficult task of bowling through the power play overs. He outperformed Rashid Khan in the CPL till he was there, and that too by quite some distance.

The problem with Shadab is his rhythm and his lack of focus on his primary skill. He has now mentioned it quite a few times now, that he would like to be considered a proper batsman as well. Although he does seem to be very gifted in that department too, but he just needs to realize that he's making the XI primarily as the spearhead of the Pakistan spin-attack. The last thing we need in already spin-deficient attack is a batsman that bowls a bit.

He needs to re-evaluate his role.

Agree with you .... are they in the team since they offer something with the bat as well ? , given pakistans traditional fragility with the bat

Pakistan has no world class batsman

Unless they find at least one if not two
They will keep loosing

CT final was a fluke

Or Fixed
What ever you may call it

Inexperienced players who have been overhyped based on performances against minnows, hence the confusion regarding their own abilities.

Imploding under pressure against India, unable to cope with pressure of expectations(clearly evident as they drop the easist of catches)

A non-performing captain whose on-field behaviour is terrible

Lower-order hitters lack improvisation.

Batsmen have limitations e.g Babar Imam sarfraz shadab Nawaz are good accumulators but cant hit big when situation demands.

Fast bowlers dont know how to bowl on slow wickets, they bowl short and wide.
To take wickets in UAE u need to restrict the run scoring by bowling tight line and lengths and create pressure on batsmen

We are far behind in talent and skill wise. Not a single batsman in our team is even good as old Dhoni. Both Fakhar, Babar and Imam can only score against weak bowlers or with lots of luck against better team. Asif is no ODI material, Haris is finished just as Fawad, Malik is ok, Sarfraz is finished as a batsman.

Fahim, Amir, Hasan, Babar, Shinwari, Junaid, Nawaz are average bowler. Afridi has potential.
It does not help either we use same players in all format knowing that their skill are not there to perform.

This team deserve to loss against top side team like India, NZ, Australia, England, South Africa 9 out of 10 if luck favor otherwise its 10/10.
