India will carry out a deeper review of post-vaccination side effects from the AstraZeneca

This comes in the wake of Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Thailand temporarily halting vaccination with the drug, after isolated
reports of recipients developing blood clots.

"We are looking at all the adverse events, particularly serious adverse events like deaths and hospitalisation. We will come back if we find anything of concern," N.K. Arora, a member of National Task Force on Covid-19, told news agency AFP.

Arora said there was "no immediate issue of concern as number of adverse events (in India) is very, very low. "We are relooking at these to see if there was any issue of blood clotting."
8 States accounted for 74% of the doses, with Uttar Pradesh topping the list with more than 3.3 lakh vaccine doses. Cumulatively, over 2.82 crore doses have been administered so far. India has been using Covishield and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin for its mass vaccination programme.

India’s total active caseload stands at 2.02 lakh . 24,882 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours. India on Saturday recorded 24,882 fresh Covid-19 infections, the highest so far this year, which took the caseload to 1,13,33,728, according to Union health ministry data.
This is also the highest daily rise in the last 83 days. As many as 26,624 new infections were recorded on December 20.

More bad news for AstraZeneca:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-norway/three-health-workers-who-received-astrazeneca-vaccine-in-hospital-with-unusual-symptoms-norway-says-idUSKBN2B50GZ

Three health workers in Norway who recently received the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 are being treated in hospital for bleeding, blood clots and a low count of blood platelets, Norwegian health authorities said on Saturday. Norway halted on Thursday the rollout of that vaccine, following a similar move by Denmark. Iceland later followed suit.

“We do not know if the cases are linked to the vaccine,” Sigurd Hortemo, a senior doctor at the Norwegian Medicines Agency told a news conference held jointly with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

All three individuals were under the age of 50.

The European medicine regulator EMA would investigate the three incidents, Hortemo added.

“They have very unusual symptoms: bleeding, blood clots and a low count of blood platelets,” Steinar Madsen, Medical Director at the Norwegian Medicines Agency told broadcaster NRK.

“They are quite sick...We take this very seriously,” he said, adding authorities had received notification of the cases on Saturday.

AstraZeneca was not immediately available for comment.

Before Denmark’s and Norway’s move, Austria stopped using a batch of AstraZeneca shots while investigating a death from coagulation disorders and an illness from a pulmonary embolism.

Still, EMA on Thursday said the vaccine’s benefits outweighed its risks and could continue to be administered.

Europe is struggling to speed up a vaccine rollout after delivery delays from Pfizer and AstraZeneca, even as a spike in cases amid a more contagious virus variant has triggered fresh lockdowns in countries like Italy and France.

Ireland suspends use of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine

The use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been suspended in the Republic of Ireland.

The National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) recommended the move following reports of serious blood clotting events in adults in Norway.

In a tweet, the Irish Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said it was a "precautionary step".

The World Health Organisation has said there was no link between the jab and an increased risk of developing a clot.

Last week, Denmark and Norway suspended the use of vaccine.

On Friday, the World Health Organisation said countries should not stop using the vaccine over fears it causes blood clots as there is no indication this is true.

More than 110,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been administered in Ireland, which is about 20% of all doses given to date.

Italy’s northern region of Piedmont said on Sunday said it would temporarily suspend AstraZeneca coronavirus shots after a teacher from the town of Biella died following his vaccination on Saturday.

The decision, following similar moves elsewhere in Europe, was precautionary and the region was awaiting the results of checks which will verify the batch that was used and whether there is a connection between the death and the vaccination, the regional government said in an online statement.

It did not say how the teacher died.

“It is an act of extreme prudence, while we verify whether there is a connection. There have been no critical issues with the administration of vaccines to date,” Luigi Genesio Icardi, head of regional health services, said in the statement.

Italy’s medicine authority Aifa on Thursday banned the use of one batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Sources told Reuters the decision had been taken after the deaths of two men in Sicily.

Aifa had said that the ban was precautionary, adding that no link had been established between the vaccine and subsequent “serious adverse events”.

Authorities in Denmark, Norway and Iceland have suspended the use of the vaccine over clotting issues, while Austria stopped using a batch of AstraZeneca shots last week while investigating a death from coagulation disorders.

The regulatory European Medicines Agency has said there is no indication that the events were caused by the vaccination, a view that was echoed by the World Health Organisation on Friday. AstraZeneca also said it had found no evidence of increased risk of deep-vein thrombosis.

Ireland also temporarily suspended AstraZeneca’s vaccine “out of an abundance of caution” on Sunday, citing reports from the Norwegian Medicines Agency regarding a cluster of serious blood clotting in some recipients there.

Earlier on Sunday, Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said vaccines in Italy and Europe were “effective and safe”, with all checks being carried out, when asked in an interview about the ban.

Pretty much everyone I know who's taken it, has gotten Covishield. No one has had any issues so far. This seems like panic over a bad batch or more likely, an unrelated clot problem. If the stats were analyzed, this could be even lower stats than those who develop clots after taking a jab.

How is it that this wasn't reported in the UK despite them having been vaccinating for a while now.

The Netherlands has become the latest country to suspend use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine over concerns about possible side effects.

The World Health Organization and Europe's medicines regulator say there is no indication of a link between the vaccine and reports of blood clots.

The Dutch government said the move, which will last until at least 29 March, was a precaution.

The Irish Republic took similar action over blood clotting reports in Norway.

Similar moves have been taken by Denmark, Norway, Bulgaria, Iceland, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Thailand. Several other European countries, including Italy and Austria, have suspended the use of certain batches of the drug as a precautionary measure.

About 17 million people in the European Union and the UK have received a dose of the vaccine, with less than 40 cases of blood clots reported as of last week, AstraZeneca said.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) - which is currently carrying out a review into incidents of blood clots - said the vaccine could continue to be administered. It said the incidents of clotting in vaccinated people was "no higher than the number seen in the general population".

Why are so many countries now suspending its usage? Its not a matter of anti-UK France or Germany, rather smaller European nations like the Dutch, Denmark, Norway, and Thailand in Asia who are adopting a wait and watch approach over this vaccine. Are all of those countries making mistakes?

This says it all. There were similar reports of Pfizer too which were disproved

Since Brexit, any old excuse for Nazi EU.

Now where's our resident student scientists who claimed vaccines are safe despite going through a fast track approval skipping the peer-review process? Hmmmmm.

Blood clots are a not uncommon medical complication — particularly in pregnant women, people living with cancer, and in clinically overweight & obese people, of whom in western society we have many.

The blood clot frequency from recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine is actually lower statistically than in the general population. There is no link.

More blood clots have in fact been noted following the Pfizer vaccine over the AstraZeneca — but again at a lower frequency than in the general population.

(Quick note here that the AZ was manufactured in the UK, whereas the Pfizer is made in Germany. But only the AZ is being censured and attacked. Of course in the context of the EU this is all just a huge coincidence....)

So, let’s just say it like it is here: this is one particularly dirty political smear campaign against AZ, which will cost lives. This campaign is mainly being driven by the EU, to take unwanted attention off its own appalling vaccine program, and it has absolutely nothing to do with either immunology nor with medicine.

But it doesn’t affect us in the UK in any way. Our cases, hospitalisations and deaths are continuing to plummet, and our roadmap to the end of lockdowns and restrictions is well on track. And in the meantime, with new waves emerging across Europe, EU citizens will again be the losers.

Great points, especially the one in bold. The science-deniers on the forum celebrated when there were cases of Bell's Palsy after being vaccinated, but didn't read the very article that they linked which said that it was consistent with the rate of Bell's Palsy for the general population. These science deniers read headlines that seemingly prove their (unfounded) positions and jump all over it, very sad.

I took the first dose of this vaccine 2 weeks ago. So far so good.

The World Health Organization appealed to countries on Monday not to pause vaccination campaigns after two more European nations and one in Asia joined a handful which have suspended use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine over safety fears.

Thailand announced plans on Monday to go ahead with the Anglo-Swedish firm’s shot but Indonesia said it would wait after Ireland and the Netherlands announced suspensions on Sunday.

Denmark and Norway have reported isolated cases of bleeding, blood clots and a low platelet count after the AstraZeneca vaccine. Iceland and Bulgaria had earlier suspended its use while Austria and Italy have stopped using particular batches.

France, Germany and the United Kingdom say they have no concerns.

The WHO said its advisory panel was reviewing reports related to the shot and would release its findings as soon as possible. But it said it was unlikely to change its recommendations, issued last month, for widespread use, including in countries where the South African variant of the virus may reduce its efficacy.

“As of today, there is no evidence that the incidents are caused by the vaccine and it is important that vaccination campaigns continue so that we can save lives and stem severe disease from the virus,” WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier said.

AstraZeneca’s shot was among the first and cheapest to be developed and launched at volume since the coronavirus was first identified in central China at the end of 2019 and is set to be the mainstay of vaccination programmes in much of the developing world. The virus has killed more than 2.7 million people.

Thailand became the first country outside Europe to delay rolling out the vaccine on Friday, when its political leaders were due to have the first shots, but the government said on Monday they would receive the AstraZeneca vaccine on Tuesday.

Indonesia, however, said it would delay administering the shot due to the reports of blood clots among some recipients in Europe and would await a review from the WHO.

The WHO had already said there was no indication the events were caused by the vaccination, a view also expressed by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which said the number of reported blood clots was no higher than seen in the general population.

The handful of reported side-effects in Europe have upset vaccination programmes already under pressure over slow rollouts and vaccine scepticism in some countries.

The Netherlands said on Monday it had seen 10 cases of possible noteworthy adverse side-effects from the AstraZeneca vaccine, hours after the government put its vaccination programme on hold following reports of potential side-effects in other countries.

Denmark reported “highly unusual” symptoms in a 60-year-old citizen who died from a blood clot after receiving the vaccine, the same phrase used on Saturday by Norway about three people under the age of 50 it said were being treated in hospital.

“It was an unusual course of illness around the death that made the Danish Medicines Agency react,” the agency said in a statement late on Sunday.

AstraZeneca Plc said earlier it had conducted a review covering more than 17 million people vaccinated in the European Union and the UK which had shown no evidence of an increased risk of blood clots.

In Germany, the question marks over the vaccine caused a political row, with the leader of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Soeder, saying the country needed clear guidance from its own experts.

Noting that some other EU countries had stopped using the vaccine, Soeder told a news conference: “That’s why there has to be an extra clear statement in Germany: is the vaccine good or bad?”

The health ministry said the country was continuing to use the vaccine according to EMA guidelines.

The reports of potential safety risks are taken seriously and data is examined constantly, a ministry spokesman told Reuters. Further proceedings would be discussed with the European and the national vaccine regulators this week, he said.

Investigations into potential side-effects are complicated as the history of each case and circumstances surrounding a death or illness are examined. The Austrian authorities have said their review of the AstraZeneca batch will take about two weeks.

The EMA has said that as of March 10, a total of 30 cases of blood clotting had been reported among close to 5 million people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca shot in the European Economic Area, which links 30 European countries.

The WHO said that as of March 12, more than 300 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered around the world with no cases of death found to have been caused by any of them.

Like I've said before, the British have had a very dismal performance in the vaccine race.

As usual, the whole world is against Britain.

By enforcing this dodgy Vaccine on british public, Boris is shooting himself in the foot. There must be a scientific & logical reason why all these countries are banning this Oxford vaccine.

But this same problem hasnt happened in the UK and India. Maybe something to do with the batches used in Norway and rest of Europe

I took this vaccine. Both doses. 2 weeks after the vaccine got my Covid 19 antibody tested. It 12.2 . Before the 1st dose it was 0.80 .

So the vaccine works. Haven't had any side effects.

British government doesnt care for its people. You have their chief medical advisor with shares in GSK. Health sec has handed out millions of worth contracts to his friends.

Oxford Vaccine is dangerous, all these nations arent stupid to supsend it. UK ministers only want their donors to do well, they are ok with a percentage dying.

More over the FDA never approved it for America, I feel bad for most of the world not having access to pfizer and moderna with >95% efficacy vs oxford's "60%" with blood clots

News is emerging that police officers in the Italian region of Piedmont are currently racing to impound 400,000 live doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Some EU countries have truly lost their minds over the Covid vaccines.

Or perhaps dozens of nations inc outside of EU have data showing this vaccine can cause serious harm? You cant take the word of liars such as Boris and his cronies who are making money from this pandemic. I think EU and other are not suggesting Brits have lost their mind but are laughing with shock how stupid the public in this country are.

Countries are panicking for no good reason.

The incidence of blood clots after taking the vaccine is no higher than baseline. You are just as likely to get blood clots if you don’t take it.

I would be very happy to take AZ, but am scheduled for Pfizer tomorrow.

Im sure you would take anything the UK government offer you, no surprise there.

Blood clots are on the rise with more and more over the weekend. You may call it no reason but you dont have the data or insight, you've watched BBC and think it's all fine. Those nations have a right protect their citizens without the fear of offending the Brits.

Bro, where do you stand regarding the vaccine? Are you taking it when offered?, what about the pfizer and Moderna vaccines would you be more confident regarding their success rate.

Pfizer and Moderna are defo better.

I wont be taking any vaccine for Covid19 but this doesnt mean Im against Vaccines in general. I dont think I need it , as my immune system is strong, I eat healthy, excercise and play a lot of sports. Acc to the WHO you can still transmit the disease even with the Vaccine. From a personal pov, it makes no sense to take anything when Im confident I can recover from this virus if I ever do see symptoms. Therfore its silly to take ANY risk with these vaccines. Healthy people(small number so far) inc medical staff have died after taking this vaccine but you wont see it on BBC.

I'm actually feeling a little nervous regarding the Astrazeneca shot, I'm on blood thinners called clopidogral which is a anti clotting drug.

Then you should defo think about it before you go ahead. If you've had Covid, you've prob got the antibodies. You wont need a vaccine passport, many nations will not follow the fascist system of the west. Or just wait a few months to see if Oxford vaccine is very dangerous or not.

Actually it's been found that the vaccines reduce transmission rates

I'm sure most of us would recover easily from covid but the issue is the after effects, a lot of people get brain fog and also lose their sense of taste and smell for several months and possibly years, it also has an impact on your lungs and cardiovascular health and could decrease your quality of life significantly. Also the worse thing is that there's studies that suggest that covid could lead to infertility in men and also effect your performance, if you plan to have children then you might not want to get covid.

It’s nothing to do with the Tory Party on this occasion. The European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organisation are both saying that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe.

This is, I will repeat, simply a cynical and politically motivated move from the EU, both to cover up its own failings on vaccine distribution and also to try and take revenge against AstraZeneca for embarrassing the bloc in negotiations a while back.

Quite clearly this is politically motivated and a cheap ploy by the Europeans to demean and discredit our vaccine.

I don't think it's a revenge ploy, by refusing the Astrazeneca the Eu bloc are further damaging their economies by staying in prolonged restrictions. I must admit I'm a bit sceptical of the Astrazeneca with my underlying health conditions.

Indonesia, Thailand and India are not in the EU. What is their motive? Sounds like conspiracy theories here.

India and Indonesia.

You cant say its safe to use, you can only say its safe enough for you to take.

That article is from December, the studies on vaccine cutting down transmission rates are from the past 2 weeks.

It will take years of study to fully confirm this. This article is very recent. If you feel its safe, take it.

Germany has suspended AZ too.

As for WHO, the same lot who claimed C19 doesn't transfer from human to human? No need for a face mask? Let's promote herd immunity?

You got to be crazy to accept WHO's opinion as fact. If WHO were honest and knew what they were talking about, then I doubt we'd be in this mess.

Covid-19: Continue using AstraZeneca vaccine, says WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged countries not to pause Covid vaccinations, as several major EU member states halted their rollouts of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab.

It said there was no evidence of a link between the vaccine and blood clots.

Germany, France, Italy and Spain joined smaller nations in halting vaccinations as a precaution while checks are made.

The WHO's vaccine safety experts are meeting on Tuesday to discuss the jab.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will meet on the same day and is due to draw conclusions on Thursday. It has also said the vaccine should continue to be used.

There have been a number of cases in Europe of blood clots developing after the vaccine was administered.

However, experts say these were no more than the number of blood-clot incidents typically reported within the general population.

About 17 million people in the EU and the UK have received a dose of the vaccine, with fewer than 40 cases of blood clots reported as of last week, AstraZeneca said.

Not only WHO, most likely FDA ( USA ) will also authorize its use in coming weeks.

FDA requires phase 3 trials in USA to approve the vaccine and AZ has completed its phase 3 trials in USA and expected data from US phase 3 trails will be submitted in coming weeks.

Its absolutely certain that the data from USA trial will show no safety concern or risk for blood clot otherwise the company won;t risk presenting the dat.

Considering all this , I'm sure AZ is safe and should continue to use.

If FDA approved it, will leave no doubt about its safety.

Obviously nobody can force you to take any vaccine you do not wish to take. However before you make a final decision, just consider this. You may well be overwhelmingly ĺikely to be fine if you catch Covid, but those who could catch it from you might not be so lucky. That person could be someone's mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter etc. God forbid it could even be a member of your own family. So the more of us that take it, the better it is for all of us.

I realise you don't trust the sources saying that vaccines stop transmission, but it is a fact that infection rates here in the UK are plummeting, as are death rates. Something is working and that something is the vaccine.

As for your comments on other nations stopping the use of the Oxford vaccine, well those countries are operating a perfectly sound scientific principle called the precautionary principle - i.e. when data seems uncertain, take precaution. That is great in theory but what is totally baffling is that (1) the rate of blood clots in vaccinated people is exceptionally low (30 odd people out of 17 million) and those rates are lower than expected in the general population.

What I fear is that many more people like you will say, hang on a minute, if these countries are pausing the roll out, there must be something wrong and therefore I don't trust this vaccine. To place this mistrust in people's brains, in the middle of a pandemic, is highly reckless and will cost many lives no doubt.

Its getting more and more clear now that a fully vaccinated person with any of the approved vaccine cannot transmit the covid infection to other . So everyone should get vaccinated not just for him/herself but also to keep others around him safe .

If a person does not take the vaccine just because he thinks himself to be a superman , he ( or she ) being extremely selfish with no care/respect for others and trying to be an hurdle in fight against the pandemic .

But individual governments are taking this silly decision, it hasn’t come from the Commission.

I would agree that the Commission blundered by making the vaccine unavailable to Ireland, but that decision was corrected in hours. Had I been the Taoiseach I would have been screaming down the phone at von der Leyen.

How quickly you resort to insult!

I’ll repeat: the incidence of blood clots in people who have taken AZ is no higher than in people who have not. In other words there is no evidence to correlate blood clotting with AZ. If evidence emerges, I will reconsider.

I was trained to change my mind when the evidence changes. That’s the scientific thought-model. Observation, hypothesis, theory.

You make your mind up based on fear, then look for evidence to justify your emotional choice.

Back in the early mid 90s we had these same tories in power amid the bse mad cow scare , British beef got banned , live export of British cattle got banned by other countries Europe USA etc.

But these rotten tories said nothing was wrong and will sell beef and we will continue to sell beef on the bone and eat British beef well lo and behold people started dying, only then they admitted there was a link between beef and cjd in humans .

I realise you don't trust the sources saying that vaccines stop transmission, but it is a fact that infection rates here in the UK are plummeting, as are death rates. Something is working and that something is the vaccine.
.

Or it could be a combination of vaccine and lockdown in the UK?

Also, many countries which hardly gave vaccines at the rate of the UK also saw a fall in cases, so there are other factors as well which can reduce cases and not just vaccines

What I fear is that many more people like you will say, hang on a minute, if these countries are pausing the roll out, there must be something wrong and therefore I don't trust this vaccine. To place this mistrust in people's brains, in the middle of a pandemic, is highly reckless and will cost many lives no doubt.

And this is the point.

Some time after it has been dealt with in the UK, Covid and its highly damaging associated lockdown measures could well be prevalent across the continent for a long time to come.

James I am starting to think you may be right. A similar percentage of people have blood clots who have taken Pfizer as those who have taken AZ.

This is not about governments safeguarding their people.

This is political.

A new story today is that France is considering suing AstraZeneca for not delivering enough vials of the vaccine, despite suspending the usage of that same vaccine yesterday.

I mean lol. Who do these comedians think they are kidding. Nationalistic political tripe.

France and Germany doing it is political

But Norway and Iceland suspended it before any other country, what political beef do they have with the UK ?

The astra zeneca vaccine is manufactured in India. Eventhough its called Oxford and originated in the UK.

Alarm bells should be ringing for us in the west straight away because its manufactured in India from serum institute of India.

On top the vaccine

The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is a chimpanzee adenovirus-vectored vaccine. This means that the company took a virus that normally infects chimpanzees, and genetically modified to avoid any possible disease consequences in people.

Virus found in Chimpanzees , genetically modified ? 🤥

Adenovirus-vectored vaccines have been in development for a long time, in particular against malaria, HIV and Ebola. But no adenovirus vaccine has ever been approved for human use in the U.S. Some adenovirus vaccines in past trials have been simply ineffective, while others have been attacked by the body’s immune system (human adenoviruses can cause the common cold

There you go huge question marks no wonder countries are suspending the rollout of this so called Oxford which is manufactured in India.
Theres a reason its been suspended because in Germany they have clearly stated the side effects are too many compared to the other vaccines. Germans also claimed its pointless injecting the elderly because it is ineffective this was much earlier they claimed this
it is a genetically modified vaccine from a virus only found in chimps and serum taken from a chimp that has been genetically modified.

Yet you have the maulvis in UK telling in everyone its halal and its not made from an animal source and its OK. The cells were taken from a human foetus from the 1970s so the cells in the vaccine have been cultured from a human foetus from the 1970s.

I think I'll pass not injecting something from a chimp that has been hosted onto cells from a human foetus from 1970s why the frig would I want that in my body.

The European Union's medicines agency has said there is "no indication" that Oxford-AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine is the cause of reported blood clots.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has been carrying out a case-by-case evaluation of incidents and was expected to complete its review on Thursday, said executive director Emer Cooke.

Yes, the rate of blood clots after vaccine is in-line with the usual rate of having them. The science deniers just want something to celebrate, just like when some science denier on this forum linked an article about Bell's palsy and the vaccine, but couldn't read past the headline, as it said the rate was consistent with the usual rate of developing Bell's palsy. Love to see it.

It wasnt an insult, you support most of the mainstream inc wars abroad, so its' fair to say you will take whats recommened in the mainstream.

The evidence is nearly 20 nations have suspended this vaccine. Please email those nations and tell them they are being fools.

Oxford Vaccine was never approved in the US? IS this correct?

Everyone is free to take this or any other vaccine, nobody has the right to pressure or tell others what to inject into their bodies. When you understand these simple ethics, you may get more respect from others.

If blood clot formation is the only problem then it can be fixed easily. All that the patient has to do is to take 500mg of Aspirin every week for a month or two, following the vaccination. Of course, this should be avoided if the patient has any internal bleeding or hemorrhage. Mamoon, what do you think?

There is no indication that there is any relationship, especially not a statistically significant one, between blood clots and the AZ vaccine. The blood clot incidence post-vaccine is consistent with the blood clot incidence without. You need to stop reading just the headlines, or better yet, stop commenting on science- something you know nothing about.

Write an email to the numerous countries who have suspended the use. Clearly a bitter ex-Muslim will make them change their decision. You are not an expert in this field, sit down lol.

So the issue is that the vaccine is made by SII? Whats the problem there?

Hope you have no side effects and remain healthy. Wish you the best of health for the future too Robert.

Decent of you KingKhanWC. I hope your family stays safe.

I'm only repeating what the experts have been saying. But yeah, let's listen to a crazy extremist Muslim who equivocates a teacher showing cartoons to his murderer.

Also, since you're not an expert in virology, biomedical science, etc, why do you comment on vaccines?

Or it could be a combination of vaccine and lockdown in the UK?

It is true that the lockdown plus vaccines is causing case numbers to drop. The majority of people under 50 are yet to be vaccinated in the UK and at the moment, 50-59 year olds are getting their vaccine. So the lockdown is a crucial piece of the jigsaw to stop transmission until we've all been vaccinated.

However lets not kid ourselves here, the vaccine is having a major effect here. Our Covid rates of approx 50 per 100,000 is the lowest of all major EU nations. Some other EU nations may seen their rates fall, but ours are falling faster than almost everyone.

And this is the point.

Some time after it has been dealt with in the UK, Covid and its highly damaging associated lockdown measures could well be prevalent across the continent for a long time to come.

I think this is a problem for us in the UK too because as Covid has demonstrated over the last 12 months, it doesn't stay put within national boundaries without a total shutdown of borders. So the UK will be fully vaccinated whilst our closest neighbours are not, giving more and more opportubity for Covid to mutate in a way to avoid the vaccines. We need Europe to up its game big time, for our own safety as well as theres.

The evidence is nearly 20 nations have suspended this vaccine. Please email those nations and tell them they are being fools.

I'm afraid you seem to have no credible response. You are right that several nations paused their vaccine roll out BUT you are yet to answer the fundamental question here: were the reasons given for pausing the roll out credible?

The reasons were purported high incidences of blood clots. As has now been said a million times in this thread alone, there isn't in fact a high incidence of blood clots. So the reasons given by these nations are not scientifically sound or credible.

Just because certain nations take certain actions, and others then jump on the bandwagon, doesn't make those nations right. So, instead of saying "all these nations have stopped the vaccine and therefore there is a problem with the vaccine", please enlighten us all as to what specifically is wrong with the vaccine.

Global health experts came under increasing pressure on Tuesday to clear up questions over the safety of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 shot, as Sweden and Latvia joined countries suspending their use in a further blow to Europe’s vaccination rollout.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said it was investigating reports of 30 cases of unusual blood disorders out of 5 million recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine. In total, 45 million COVID shots have been delivered across the region.

The EU regulator will release its findings on Thursday but its head, Emer Cooke, said she saw no reason to change its recommendation of AstraZeneca - one of four vaccines that it has approved for use.

“The benefits continue to outweigh the risks, but this is a serious concern and it does need serious and detailed scientific evaluation,” Cooke told a news conference.

A World Health Organization (WHO) committee of experts was reviewing the cases and was expected to issue a statement by the end of the day, a spokesman said.

The EU’s largest members - Germany, France and Italy - suspended use of AstraZeneca’s vaccine on Monday pending the outcome of investigations into unusual cases of a rare cerebral thrombosis in people who had received it.

The addition of Sweden and Latvia on Tuesday brought to 13 the number of EU countries to act since reports first emerged of thromboembolisms affecting people after they got the AstraZeneca shot.

The WHO and EMA had earlier joined AstraZeneca in saying there is no proven link, but some experts said the episodes of blood clots, bleeding and low platelet counts in younger people seemed to indicate a causal connection to the AstraZeneca shot.

“The benefits of vaccination significantly outweigh the risks, especially for the elderly,” said Karl Lauterbach, health spokesman for Germany’s Social Democratic Party.

“But it could be the case that the risks of the vaccine are higher for certain patient groups such as young women,” Lauterbach, an epidemiologist whose party is part of the Berlin coalition, told Deutschlandfunk radio in an interview.

Other epidemiologists note that similar cases have not been found in unusual numbers in Britain, which began using AstraZeneca earlier and has given more than 10 million doses.

“A very likely explanation of at least some of the clotting disorders seen are a result of COVID-19 rather than the vaccine,” said Stephen Evans, professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

“There are published papers that make clear that these problems definitely occur in COVID-19 and there is no doubt that all the vaccines in use prevent that disease. Hence the risk and benefit balance for the AstraZeneca vaccine remains clearly in favour of its benefits.”

In the EU’s largest states, including Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, AstraZeneca has accounted for about 13-15% of shots given since the rollout began almost three months ago, with Pfizer-BioNTech making up the majority, according to official data.

As one as the cheapest to be developed, the AstraZeneca shot is set to be the mainstay of vaccination programmes in much of the developing world.

Governments say they acted on the AstraZeneca shot out of an abundance of caution - of 1.6 million people in Germany given the vaccine, seven fell ill with a very rare cerebral vein thrombosis of whom three died.

In a detailed analysis of its findings Germany’s vaccine oversight body, the Paul Ehrlich Institute, said six of the cases were in women of young or middle age - a number statistically significantly higher than normally expected.

Nicola Magrini, the director general of Italy’s medicines authority AIFA, told daily la Repubblica the AstraZeneca shot was safe and its benefit to risk ratio was “widely positive”. There have been eight deaths and four cases of serious side-effects in Italy following vaccinations, he added.

In France, Health Minister Olivier Veran told reporters the risk-reward ratio for the AstraZeneca vaccine remained positive.

A third wave of infection in Europe, driven by more infectious viral variants, threatens to worsen a pandemic that has claimed 575,000 lives in the European Union and further delay recovery from a pandemic economic slump.

Deutsche Bank on Tuesday slashed 2021 economic growth forecasts for the euro area by a whole percentage point, citing spillover of the ongoing pandemic-linked activity restrictions.

Coronavirus infections are rising exponentially in Germany, an expert at the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases said, putting at risk plans to lift its lockdown. France is considering a possible third national lockdown.

Vaccination campaigns had got off to a slow start due to scarce supply, but the European Commission said on Tuesday it expects to receive more than 200 million doses of vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech in the second quarter, putting the EU on course to meet its targets.

The EU aims to vaccinate at least 255 million people, or 70% of its adult population, by the end of the summer. The bloc has administered 11 shots so far for every 100 residents, while Israel - a world leader in vaccination - has given 108 doses, according to Our World in Data.

Here in Canada it is now approved for 65+, while other countries are banning it.. lol.
