Pakistan starting with a 4-0 loss to Netherlands (expected) and 6-0 loss to Canada(!).

Is this the worst moment for Pakistani hockey? What has gone wrong?

I saw an ad on Star Sports and it said Pakistan is playing the semi against India on the same day as the CT final. I didn't even know a hockey tournament was going on.

How did we end up in the semis with those results?

It is the semi-finals stage for qualification to the actual tournament.

What a travesty that Pakistan have come to see this day.. Nonetheless, I have hope for the future.

Pakistan suffers 6-0 loss against Canada in World Hockey League

Pakistan suffered a huge defeat against Canada in World Hockey League semi-final round at London Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Pakistan lost to Canada 0-6, its heaviest defeat against the North American competitors and appeared a no-match to the Canadians who dictated a true lesson of hockey to once the giants of hockey.

Canada displayed free flowing hockey during play. Their attacks were swift and well-coordinated, and commitment in the circle resulted in some of the best goals of the tournament. The use of wingers also proved very effective.

The Canadians fully dominated the proceedings and did not allow Pakistani forwards to respond. Canadian converted two penalty corners and one goal came via penalty shoot.

Yet their hunger for goals remained unabated; sixth goal came in the last minute. Pakistani defence made a number of unforced errors and the marking was poor, giving much room to the Canadian forwards to manoeuvre.

Most of the time, Pakistanis appeared a disjointed lot and no combination were witnessed during the stipulated time. As in the first game, the green shirts had their chances but poor finishing meant they were lost.

In the two matches it has played so far, Pakistan has earned just one penalty corner which clearly indicates the overall performance of the forwards. With the high profile game against India coming up on Sunday, the green shirts will have to put their best foot forward.

Scorers for Canada: Scott Tupper slammed in through penalty stroke conversion while John Smythe scored two consecutive goals in the 19th and 27th minute through penalty corner conversion. Floris van Son, Brenden Bissett and Gordon Johnston scored one goal each in the 28th, 50th and 60th minutes.

Hockey World League Semi-Final: After Malaysia shock, India wary of Pakistan

India, Pakistan, Canada and China will be playing for the fifth to eighth positions in the Hockey World League Semi-Final in London.

Did Roelant Oltmans put the cart before the horse? After Malaysia dented India’s plans to enter the last-four stage of the Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final on Thursday, India run into an improving Pakistan for the second time in a week in London.

Dutchman Oltmans never envisaged that India would be playing Pakistan in a placing match at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre here. His eyes were firmly on a semi-final clash against Argentina, but the tables were turned on India.

“We haven’t done enough here. I was not even thinking of playing Pakistan again,” a disappointed Oltmans said after the 3-2 Malaysian setback.

Classification battle

On Saturday, India clash with Pakistan and Canada play China as the teams contest for the fifth to eighth positions in the Hockey World League Semi-Final’s London leg.

Since India automatically qualify as the host nation for the 2018 Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar, Pakistan, Canada and China will be desperate to grab the fifth and sixth slots and remain in the hunt for the world championship.

Argentina, Malaysia, Netherlands and England have already qualified for the 2018 World Cup by virtue of entering the semi-finals here.
On Saturday, Rio Olympics champions take on Malaysia while hosts England play a marauding Dutch team. In the quarterfinals on Thursday, Argentina beat Pakistan 3-1, Netherlands spanked China seven goals to nothing and England scripted a come-from-behind 4-2 win against Canada.

India vs Pakistan treat

This has been a season of India versus Pakistan in the UK. The cricket teams battled twice in the ICC Champions Trophy and it will be a repeat on the hockey pitch. Oltmans is only hoping that the Round 2 results will be different.

India had whipped Pakistan in a group match of the ICC Champions Trophy in Birmingham on June 4 and two weeks later at The Oval, surrendered meekly to gift Pakistan their maiden Champions Trophy.

Oltmans seemed to be aware of what happened on the cricket field and with Pakistan showing signs of improvement in the Hockey World League Semi-Final, the Indians are not even thinking of their 7-1 win in a group match last Sunday.
“Certainly it won’t be 7-1. They got their chances against us in the first match and they scored against Argentina. So we have to respect Pakistan for their abilities,” said Ramandeep Singh, who scored India’s two goals against Malaysia

Desperate for World Cup

Pakistan are desperate to finish among the top six. They lifted their game against Rio Olympic champions Argentina on Thursday and their defence looked tightest in the tournament so far.

For a struggling Pakistan team that had conceded 18 goals and scored just four in the four group matches, to thwart the tactical Argentines in as many as seven penalty corners in a pressure game was a clear sign of improvement. Their goalkeeper Amjad Ali had an outstanding match.

Captain Abdul Haseem Khan was confident of a better show against India. “We are a young team and lack experience of big matches. But we are like soldiers in a battlefield. We will rise for sure,” he told HT.

India’s story of missed chances continued against a tactical Malaysia on Thursday. “We are still not finishing well. It was good to rebound after being down two-nil but we are still not executing our plans and luck is not with us too,” Oltmans said.

India’s inability to score directly from penalty corners has hurt the team. Harmanpreet Singh has drawn a blank in his last six short corners mostly due to the absence of crisp and precision finish.

“It’s a pity we are missing Rupinderpal Singh but it’s no point talking about a player who is not here. Harmanpreet is young and will learn,” said Oltmans.

India’s inability to finish well from inside the 25-yard zone has been a sore point in the Hockey World League semi-final. Sizzling crosses across the pitch, clever deflections and quick counterattacks seem to be factors that is dominating modern hockey. India still have some catching up to do.

Our Government needs to do something for Pak Hockey team immediately. Cricket is getting all the attention but how can they neglect a sport in which they have won 4 world cups

India thrashed us 6-1 again. We may as well give up on Hockey now. The team is going nowhere.

Is there anybody who even plays the sport in Pakistan now? None of the tv channels or newspapers are even covering it, the first I heard about this tournament was through this thread.

4 World Cups, 3 Olympic Gold Medals and 3 Champions Trophy. Pak can and should never ever give up in hockey never

Oh well, atleast we're the best in the world in cricket.

To be honest who even cares about in anymore? No one goes to hang out with their friends to discuss the latest happenings in Hockey.

I don't even know any of the current players and I'm a guy who grew up watching hockey and was an avid fan of the sport in the 90s and early 2000s.

Is Sohail Abass playing league hockey in Netherlands still ?

I used to really enjoy watching hockey growing up. With the current state of Pakistan team, blue pitches, yellow ball, hockey has become very unattractive.

Pakistan has just beaten China 3-1,finishes 7th, there is hope for World Cup wualification, if FIH extends the world cup to 18 teams then Pakistan will qualify.

Congratulations it is virtually confirmed that Pakistan has qualified for the hockey world cup 2018

1. Hockey League like PSL is needed

2. Government needs to heavily invest in grass root hockey. Than after 5 Yesrs our Team will improve, public interest will revive and than Sponsors would pour in the much required investmemt.

3. We have enough talent. The thing is you cannot survive wothout money so players leave hockey to pursue other business or jobs to feed their loved ones.

it needs investment..the players aplay for free practically and hence you cant expect anything more from them..it is an achievement if they qualify for anything..

Hockey is a sport that can really lend itself to Pakistan. It can be played at night and ends within a hour..a PSL type local league with good marketing and promotion could ignite some english football type interest..but alas who has the vision to do this and the money?

Yeah, but point was Canada has improved alot, defeating powerful teams like India.

TBH it's jus this tournament,it's hard to be consistent,we were beating Malaysia and Canada easily some months ago.

Will wait before saying they have become consistent.

Yup,worst tournament for us in a long time, lost to Malaysia as well

i still remember that korea and germany out of no where emerged as very powerful and competitive teams and then lost in limbo

The modern game of hockey is all about fitness. If you don't have players who can run fast for a long time you are at a big disadvantage.
