Pakistan assistant coach Azhar Mahmood, while addressing a press conference ahead of the second Test against England:

Pakistan's Pitch Strategy:

"We had a clear plan of what pitches to prepare for Bangladesh, and what to prepare vs England. Our approach was pace wickets against Bangladesh and spin pitches against England. Our instruction to the curator for the first Test was that the ball should spin after the second day. But the pitch didn't take turn until even the fifth day. Hopefully, the ball will begin to take turn on the ninth day."

Need for Taking 20 Wickets:

"You have to take 20 wickets. We thought about how we're going to take those. We thought that if we use that pitch, the thinking was how do we take 20 wickets against England, and we thought spin was the way to do it."

Experienced Players in the Lineup:

"The players who are coming in are experienced. They have been playing first-class cricket for a while. The best option is to play players at home on pitches they are used to, so I don't think there'll be that much pressure on that."

Pitch Preparation Strategy:

"We left a lot of grass on the pitches and wanted the ball to turn to use the pitch in our favour. Let's see if it works for us."

Fast Bowling Under New Management:

"If you look at the fast bowling, this was the third Test under new management. Before that, we were also struggling as we wanted to know how to get 20 wickets. So now we think we have more options with spin. There were also a few niggles. Naseem had a few niggles, and Shaheen was playing a lot of cricket. So we decided to rest him."

So for first 3 days its still likely to be a road? That means we are basically stuffed with only 1 seamer?

By that ninth day England could have a new world record innings score
You would think they'd have more confidence in a turning pitch by selecting 3 specialist spinners

Makes sense then to go with spinners. No need to flat out your pacers if they can't take wickets. overrate will be under control as well. Spinners can bowl longer spells without expending as much energy as a fast bowler.

83 overs a day

Thats 498 balls a day

Pakistan giving England an easy chance to score 6 an over by just milking with fielders on the boundary. Playing spin all day on tracks that dont have crazy turn is suicide!

They played pacers. Couldn't take England's 10 wickets. At worst Pakistan loses by an innings again and England score 800+. But at least your pacers won't get worked to ground. 4 spinners / 83 overs per day = ~20 overs each. Which is alright as a spinner. + You have Jamal to bowl a couple spells.

Good thing with using spinners is they can bowl more overs in a session. WTC points won't be docked for slow over rate

What does he actually mean by 9th day? Is he taking the days between two test matches or just 5 days for 1st test and 4th day for 2nd test?

Bangladeshi bowling attack starting to look more like the Pakistani attack of old and Pakistani bowling attack/strategy now has turned into the Bangladeshi bowling of yore

Beyond ridiculous.

I really don’t know if this interview is a wind up or not.

I know he doesn’t want to play the format anymore, but only Amir is skilful enough to know how to bowl on these pitches and when it is time to adjust, his IQ isn’t appreciated. Pakistani bowlers don’t have a plan B, and nor do the management, Azhar should know better….

Pakistan is playing only with spinners and hoping pitch to turn on 9th day?

Some disconnect here.

Cracks are visible but when will it start behaving like a spin-friendly track??

It's a used pitch so he means Day 4 obviously. What a confusing way to say it though.

PAK need to stop deluding themselves about their "pace-bowling prowess". It simply doesn't exist anymore. Pakistan would have a high likability of winning if they produced turning tracks. That was the core reason behind their success in the UAE. The fast-bowlers were trundlers even back then who came and went, series after series. Pakistan need to find another world-class spinner and a few decent ones who can atleast pick up wickets in Pakistan.

pitch is taking some turn but not egregiously so
those cracks will get bigger and we may start to see some real venom late of day 2/day 3

A big Test for our spinners now
the spinners Pak have are good old horses from the FC , so definitely its Pak game to lose..

England will find it tough to score against even with their bazball, first time the selection committee man up and squeezed them The coach and captain with their rubbish clueless backing of non-performing players despite losing streak..

I hope this selection committee continues to take tough and right calls in LOIs too.. Aleem Dar is a great addition , he has an eye for talent..

Exactly, trust Pak team to come up with such gems.
And only Pakistan can go from 4 pacers in a test at beginning of test season to 1 medium pacer hoping for some spin on day 4 of a match!

Well that could be a disaster if Pakistan gets bowled out for 350 tomorrow. England scores 500 and gets a decend lead of 150 and Pakistan batting on day 4 (day 9) to kill that lead.

Silly chap.

Great pitch. First time in many home tests they made a pitch to suit home team. The batsmen also looked comfortable with low slow bounce and turn and mostly facing spring throughout the day. Should have had this type of pitch for all home tests vs sena teams.

I am expecting Pakistan to get 375 or so. England to get around 275.

Second innings could be crazy once cracks open up. Even 200 would be tough in 4th innings.
