Was having this discussion with some friends and thought it would be interesting to post here. It is becoming increasingly likely that PTI could come into power in the upcoming elections and while Pakistan has much bigger problems than cricket it is an interesting exercise to predict what the potential impact on PCB and Pakistan cricket would be if PTI wins.
On the plus side it goes without saying that PCB would probably be more meritocratic and financially clean under PTI/IK than any other party and few people would know the inner workings of Pakistan cricket better than IK. On the other hand, whatever his leanings may be as a politician or journalist, Najam Sethi has done an admirable job as PCB chairman and especially with the PSL. He is easily the most professional and astute PCB chairman we have had in years. Given his conflict with IK, it will only be a matter of time that he is removed if PTI comes into power and that could have a pretty big impact on PSL.
IK also has some very strong views about the domestic cricket structure of Pakistan and has repeatedly talked about dismantling the department-based teams. I don’t know enough about this topic to comment but a lot of former players/administrators have criticized this proposal as unrealistic. Either way a radical overhaul of the domestic structure can have a big positive or negative impact on the team. By his own admission IK has also not been following cricket seriously since his retirement and some of his views on cricket can sometimes come across as old fashioned. Lastly, I really hope former players especially those that played with or under IK, dont take advantage of their personal relationships with Imran to sneak back into PCB. We really don’t need another decade of Inti, Miandad, Aqib Javed etc.
Personally, I support IK but feel that it would be better for Pakistan cricket if Sethi is allowed to continue and IK doesn’t directly interfere in PCB affairs like previous govts.
