Lets hope the local politicians dont rip off Huawei with your usual short-term approach, and actually help the company grow with their brave investment strategy.

This is interesting development, also last month OPPO bigwigs were meeting KP finance and IT ministers and exploring opportunity to establish a large cellphone manufacturing plant in KP. We need to piggy back on the Chinese industrial juggernaut as much as possible, anyway the Mecca of the hardware and technical development seems to be shifting from the US to the Chinese. In a few decades we will be getting more innovation coming out of China than the US, in this sphere. As it is the Chinese managed to develop 5G before the Americans.

Also US commerce dept recently noted that Pak software exports reached $5b and are now at number three after textiles and food items. Funnily enough Pak government own stats say software exports at $1-2b

The new East India Company.

I'm sorry but that sounds like a bit of an insult.

PTI and IK aren't Mughals.

There's no version of this which becomes a Chinese invasion.

Foreign investment aaye to masla, na aaye to bhi masla

No. Thats not true.

Huawei is exploring new oppurtunities as US and a large number of European countries have banned Huawei. India has still not granted permission to Huawei to participate in 5G bidding.

Hence they need new markets and also its easier to export from pakistan.

I just hope pakistan realises that Huawei is in desperate state and they dont get to arm twist pakistan.

If huawei starts operating in india will it operate as huawei only or would it be forced to do a merger with some local company to operate as a local one?
Like how maruti suzuki or bajaj is operating

Huawei operates as Huawei only. Thing is whether govt will allow Huawei to supply 5G equipment in India.

Maruti Suzuki is majority owned by Suzuki.

Bajaj is an Indian co.

I honestly don't get the outrage about China's presence in Pakistan when the US has military bases in Pakistan and gets a free pass to drop drones in FATA.

Let's talk about the US before we talk about China.

He wont talk about that as his darling PPP allowed screwing Pakistan's sovereignty.

so how are sales for huawei in pakistan

I haven’t seen too many reliable numbers regarding market share but some estimates put it at around 15-20%.

It’s the mid-range where all the competition is taking place with Realme, Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, Huawei, etc., all trying to outdo each other. Flagship sales are quite low especially since taxes on phones were ramped up.

Huawei need to work hard to keep up their level of sales due to the lack of Google Services on their phones now which is off-putting for most consumers.

I believe that huawei are now the biggest phone company in the world - they just overtook samsung few hrs ago:

Huawei's first mover advantage into 5G won't last long. In the world of technology, first capturer counts for more than first mover.

Motorola made the first ever phone for example, but Nokia caught the market first. Then Nokia made the first Maps feature, but Google got the market first, etc. etc.

And Huawei haven't helped their cause by being banned from so many countries already.

Huawei has become the biggest vendor of smartphones in the world for the first time, according to analysts' estimates.

It took the top spot by shipping 55.8 million devices in the last quarter, overtaking Samsung's 53.7 million.

The report comes from analytics firm Canalys, which called the change "remarkable".

The fact that China came out of pandemic lockdown earlier than other countries is pinpointed as the reason for Huawei's success.

Huawei phones have also struggled to appeal to Western markets because they do not have Google-made apps, which are banned due to US trade restrictions.

Its new-found dominance is mainly driven by its impressive sales back home in China.

Overseas shipments are actually down for the company, by 27% - but Canalys estimates that it now sells more than 70% of all smartphones in mainland China.

"This is a remarkable result that few people would have predicted a year ago," said analyst Ben Stanton from Canalys.

The firm also highlighted that the coronavirus pandemic hit Samsung's shipments hard, dropping them by an estimated 30%. That made it easier for the Chinese market - which emerged from lockdown sooner - to dominate the rankings.

"If it wasn't for Covid-19, it wouldn't have happened," Mr Stanton said. "Huawei has taken full advantage of the Chinese economic recovery to reignite its smartphone business."

"Taking first place is very important for Huawei," his colleague Mo Jia added.

"It is desperate to showcase its brand strength to domestic consumers, component suppliers and developers."

The lack of integration with Google's popular apps on Huawei phones is likely to put off some smartphone buyers. Trade restrictions imposed by the US mean that Google cannot collaborate with Huawei to add them.

That means that Google Maps, YouTube, the Google Play Store and other apps seen as standard on most Android devices are simply not available through normal means.

Huawei has responded by building its own app store solution, which The Register reports now has some 81,000 apps aimed at Westerners, and more than 70 million European users.

But it is not clear how many of those users are people with access to the Google app store, and how many are using the Huawei App Gallery as their only source for new apps.

The analysts expect that Huawei's grip on the top spot will be temporary. The phone maker's numbers are actually down by 5% globally, and Samsung is likely to recover from its poorer results in that quarter.

A spokesperson for Huawei, however, said the company "has demonstrated exceptional resilience in these difficult times."

"Amidst a period of unprecedented global economic slowdown and challenges, we've continued to grow and further our leadership position by providing innovative products and experience to consumers."

But licensing issue will come soon if US turns more screws. In that case, Huwaei won't be able to sell even in countries who didn't ban them.

This is a great news for Pakistan and all the people there who would get job opportunities and hands on exposure with what is right now the biggest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. Good luck guys :14:

In the same way the US doesn't want to have Chinese tech as part of their infrastructure, surely China and other nations will also seek to reduce reliance on US products. It will make global trade far more difficult in the long run if we get increased protectionism.

Google is only useful to Huawei as a partner, once it becomes a tool for US govt, then Huawei will have to find an alternative and try to push that on their partner states abroad.

You are mistaken. Huawei 5G only has more portfolio or contracts to build the infrastructure.
reason why Usa is trailing behind Huawei is different.
Currently only China and some European countries have allocated low spectrum for 5G, this means signal can travel long distance and hence less infrastructure and cost effective.
in usa only military is entitled to use this low spectrum due to security reasons.
Usa has allocated a spectrum for 5G in a range which makes it is expensive to build and deploy infrastructure
This makes it very hard for 5G testing in Usa and naturally trailing behind other networks like Huawei

As I said usa companies like Qualcomm hold bulk of patents in 5G and saying lack of innovation is not right.

5G will bring immense possibilities in technology but might bring lots of issues in future in terms of security.

Then there's no corporation that's free of sin. Doesn't India have investments from Amazon and Google, both companies that have big contracts with the DoD who are responsible for whatever happened in Iraq and the rest of the middle east or we gon act like that didn't happen :irfan

Huawei is more of an equipment producer than handset or devices. They do make cheap handsets (& palm top devices, lap tops) for Asian & African market (at least that was 5/6 years back, don’t know about now), but their main business comes from mobility network equipments. I visited for three days their Shenzhen estate which shouldn’t be terms as factory, it’s a small city out there and their annual gross revenue should cross 100bn by now. More than device, I think they are targeting 5G framework in PAK and subsequently Afghanistan, Central Asia. They’ll get the 5G contract in Bangladesh, Srilanka, Nepal & Myanmar almost certainly.

Ericsson and Nokia refute this. European 5G infrastructure uses their components, recognising the security risk posed by Huawei.

Sadly, yes. Soon all Pakistan’s systems will have their chips. Pakistan will be absorbed by China if it doesn’t watch out.

Lmaooo but it's okay to use Intel and hardware and software from western countries :)) , Ironic coming from a British guy knowing the damage they've caused to the world.

Ok, but consider that the West is liberal and democratic while China is authoritarian and one-party, and consider whom Pakistan is most at threat from in terms of geography as well as political systems.

rob you know ericsson and nokia 5g is poor- why havent we(UK) jumped on board then with those two

The new East India Company.

I missed this post. MIG, do you feel some level of uncomfortable seeing chinese influence on pakistan?

What I am trying to ask here is, do you feel China is entering in Pak's space more than a friendly country does?

Cost is a major factor for countries.

Huawei tech is not better, but a lot cheaper. Some countries can afford to not go for the cheapest option due to other priorities, but it won't be possible for all contries to do so. Unless cheap alternative is present, Huawei will still get good market share of 5G.

Huawei to train hundreds of Pakistan’s govt officials

Chinese tech giant Huawei has assured Prime Minister Imran Khan that the company is keen to invest in Pakistan’s Information Technology sector.

The development came during the meeting of Prime Minister Imran Khan with Huawei officials. Federal Minister for Information Technology Aminul Haq was present at the meeting between PM Imran Khan and President of Chinese technology company Huawei in the Middle East. The meeting was attended by key officials including Huawei Pakistan CEO Qing Meng.

Chinese officials informed the premier that Huawei will train 1,000 Pakistani government employees in the field of information technology. On the occasion, Prime Minister Imran Khan briefed the Huawei representative on the vision of Digital Pakistan.

The Prime Minister said that there are vast opportunities for investment in Pakistan in the field of technology. Through IT, transparency and better governance in government affairs can be achieved, he said.
